Narcoleptic-Bucky, Stranger-Steve
Bucky Barnes yawns widely and rubs his eyes, resting his hands on the steering wheel. He was heading to do a business deal in Alberta and to get there had to take a barely used road. He was kind of nervous about it, because since he had narcolepsy he could fall asleep at any time, so driving was dangerous. He could've taken up the offer to be driven by one of his friends but decided he could handle whatever happened to him.
He takes another sip of coffee and sighs, trying to keep himself awake. He keeps his eyes on the empty road in front of him even as it gets darker. He glances at the pills his friend Bruce Banner concocted in his science lab for him. He hadn't tested the pills but they're supposed to keep him awake for longer, a sort of stimulant. Apparently he called it Buzz.
Sighing, Bucky pops one in and takes a swig of coffee, he swallows these both down and flexes his knuckles on the wheel.
Hours later the day turns to complete night and the lights on the front of his car barely made a dent in the thick darkness. He yawns widely and closes his eyes for a second before focusing on the road again. Despite the pills and the coffee, he was getting exhausted. He figured he should pull over but the more stubborn part of him, the stronger part really, assured him he would be fine.
He squints at the road, eyes starting to slip closed. He blinks then yawns widely. Despite his efforts, his body just can't, and his eyes slip shut as he practically passes out from lack of sleep. The car veers off of the road and slams into a tree, and Bucky doesn't wake.
///
Steve Rogers drives along the empty road coming from Alberta and back home to Brooklyn. He yawns and stretches, briefly checking his watch and seeing it's two in the morning. He'd been driving for a while now, but that was okay, he'd had a nap a couple hours ago.
He keeps his eyes on the road and sees a shape up ahead in the darkness. Frowning, he looks in his rear view mirror before pulling up behind the shape, which he saw to be a car that had crashed.
Steve turns his car off and quickly unbuckles, he heads out and trots over to the crashed car's driver's seat. He knocks on the window and hears no answer.
He swings the door open and his eyes widen when he sees a brunette man in the seat, his head bleeding and resting against his seatbelt.
"Hey, sir, are you okay?" Steve tries, shaking his shoulder a little. The brunette doesn't reply and Steve curses quietly. He carefully unbuckles him and even more carefully pulls him free of the car. He takes his own jacket off and lays it on the ground then lowers the brunette down onto it. Steve kneels beside him and checks him for injuries; his right ankle was bruised and swollen and his forehead was bleeding heavily.
"Crap," He mutters to himself, leaning back on his heels. He searches his pockets for anything to help stop the bleeding. Finding nothing he decides to take off his sweater and use that instead. Anything was better than nothing.
"C'mon, fella, wake up," He says quietly, worried about the brunette man. He stays there until, eventually, Bucky does wake.
His eyes flicker open and he sees two blurry blondes in front of him. Bucky blinks until the two turn into one worried looking, tall, blonde man staring down at him.
Bucky looks up at the blonde then slowly raises a hand to press to his bleeding head, to find that the blonde had that under control already.
"What- what happened?" He asks, struggling to sit up and feeling pain wash over his head in reply.
"You got into a car accident," The blonde informs and realization dawns on the brunette. He sighs and leans forward, digging the palms of his hands into his eyes as he swears.
"S***," He whispers, shoulders sagging. The blonde watches him, still looking concerned.
"Will you be okay, sir?" The blonde asks and Bucky looks up at him.
"Uhm- uh, yeah, I'll be fine. And please, it's Bucky," He says and Steve nods.
"Okay. I'm Steve," He introduces and Bucky waves a hand, Steve takes his hand and Bucky pulls himself to his feet but pales as soon as he puts pressure on his ankle. He finds himself leaning on Steve but then pulls away.
"Sorry," He mutters, balancing on his left foot. Steve shakes his head.
"That's fine. Do you need any help? Need to borrow a phone or anything?" Steve asks and Bucky shakes his head a little.
"Thank you, Steve, but I think I can get by on my own," He sighs. The blonde nods and rubs the back of his neck, looking down at his feet. Bucky glances over at his car and sighs deeply when he sees that it's totalled.
"Right... uhm, Bucky, if you don't mind me asking, where were you headed?" Steve asks.
"I was going to Alberta for a business meeting," He replies and Steve blows out a breath.
"That's a two, three days drive," Steve muses and Bucky shrugs.
"Figured I could make it," He says a little bashfully, rubbing the back of his head and glancing up at the blonde with a small shy grin. He found the blonde really, really attractive. Tall, dirty blonde, shadow of a beard and light blue eyes.
"Hmm. Uh, do you need a ride?" Steve offers and Bucky shakes his head.
"I don't want to take you outta your way," He protests, shoving his hands in his pockets. Since his ankle can't take it anymore he lowers himself to the ground and takes off his own sweater, he wraps his ankle up.
"I wouldn't be going out of my way. If you need any help the offer still stands," Steve answers, just a little white lie, (he had been trying to get to Brooklyn) and Bucky looks down at his lap, frowning a little and chewing on his bottom lip. He slowly stands back up and presses down on his ankle, sighing a little.
"Well... uhm, if I could get a ride to the nearest town that would be great," He says finally, meeting Steve's eyes. The blonde smiles a little and nods. "I'm just gonna check if anything survived the... crash." Bucky frowns, staring at the wreckage. Steve nods again.
Bucky limps over to his car and starts searching around. He finds his phone, which was smashed beyond repair, his briefcase for work, which was dented but still mostly intact, and his wallet, which had a few bills but nothing else. He wished he knew where his bank card went but it wasn't there. Sighing, he takes what he managed to salvage and heads back to Steve's car.
"Anything?" Steve asks and Bucky sticks his bottom lip out.
"Work and not much else," He sighs and Steve nods. The brunette didn't tell him about his money because frankly he didn't need to know.
He pulls open the door and slides in, Steve gets into the driver's seat and closes the door. He starts the engine as Bucky buckles up. He clicks his own seatbelt in before getting back on the road.
"So, Steve, what do you do for a living?" Bucky asks conversationally, folding his arms across his chest. The blonde glances over at him as he drives.
"Artist. Mostly I paint, sometimes I play guitar or piano so I guess musician too," He muses, looking back at the road. Bucky nods.
"Sounds better than my job, I'm an office worker," Bucky scoffs and Steve nods.
"I used to be one. I hate offices," Steve shrugs and the brunette hums something, he nods and yawns. They drive in silence, first awkward. Soon it gets to be daytime again.
Bucky falls asleep at around six in the morning and Steve glances over at him. He sees him with his head resting against the window, and his eyes widen, not knowing what happened.
"Bucky?" He asks, looking back at the road then glancing at Bucky again. He shakes his shoulder but the brunette doesn't react.
"Bucky, c'mon, get up," Steve urges, shaking his shoulder a little harder. He curses and is about to pull over when Bucky looks up sleepily. Steve sighs in relief and leans back into his seat, which he had basically been on the edge of the entire time.
"Are you okay?" Steve asks, looking at him with concern in his blue eyes. Bucky sits up and rubs his eye, nodding quickly.
"I'm fine, yeah. Sorry," He mutters, cheeks burning. Steve nods slowly, still looking concerned, and focuses on the road again. "I have narcolepsy." He sighs and Steve sighs softly.
"Oh. I'm sorry," He replies and Bucky smirks a little, shaking his head.
"You don't have to be sorry, pal. That's just what mother nature chose," He sighs.
"Right. Hey, Bucky, you're probably hungry, right?" Steve muses and Bucky shrugs a little in return.
"I guess," He answers and Steve nods, keeping a lookout. Finding no food stands or stops of any kind he reaches into the back seat and digs around in a plastic bag with one hand while driving with the other. Bucky watches him quietly and raises an eyebrow when Steve pulls out a large wrapped muffin.
"Come prepared much?" Bucky snorts, taking the muffin. He was already taking a liking to the blonde. Steve smiles softly and shrugs.
"What can I say? I'm always prepared," He replies and Bucky grins, taking a bite of the muffin. Steve yawns a little, he rubs a hand over his face. Bucky leans forward and rolls down the window, he sticks his head out and grins at the chilly wind that blew his hair back. Steve glances over at him, smiling. He was liking Bucky so far.
"What are you doing?" He asks over the cold wind, glancing at Bucky again. The brunette turns to look at him, smile wide on his face, and he shrugs.
"I dunno!" He chirps, facing the wind again. Steve grins and shakes his head, looking back onto the road. He checks his watch to see that it was eight in the morning, he sighs a little. He was supposed to be back home by now; Tony Stark, his roommate, would be getting worried. He shakes his head again as Bucky pulls his brunette head back into the car, his hair every which way. He rolls the window back up.
"You oughta' try that," He breathes, looking at Steve, his eyes were bright. Steve smiles and glances at him again.
"If I weren't driving, I would," He replies and Bucky nods. It goes quiet again so Steve puts on the radio, he smiles to himself as a song by Imagine Dragons comes on. Bucky leans back in his seat and looks out the window, he listens as Steve quietly sings along. The brunette turns his head to look at him, and Steve was focused on the road but still singing along.
"Pretty good singin', Steve," He muses and the blonde looks at him.
"Thanks. My mom taught me," He replies, his knee bouncing up and down a little. Bucky notices but doesn't say anything about it. Probably something personal.
"Ah," Is all he says. Steve looks at the gas tank and huffs, because they were running low. Bucky starts keeping an eye out for a gas station as Steve drives along.
"Found one," He chimes, pointing to one that was still a while away. Steve nods and keeps driving but his car gives out a sputter. It starts slowing down and Steve groans, trying to urge it further. But, of course, the car rolls to a stop still about a hundred feet from the gas station.
"Great," Steve mutters, getting out of the car. Bucky gets out as well. They look at each other before circling around to the back of the car.
"So we're pushing, huh?" Bucky checks and Steve shrugs, he gives him a sheepish grin.
"Oops?" He replies and Bucky rolls his eyes, smirking. He gets in place and waits for the blonde. Steve joins him and they start to push. The brunette glances over at Steve and his eyes widen when he sees his muscles. He was a well built man, strong and tall. Bucky stares at him, completely forgetting to push. Steve looks over at him.
"What?" He asks and Bucky blushes, quickly looking away. He couldn't believe he hadn't noticed sooner, they'd been travelling for hours.
"Nothing," He lies, starting to push again. If he was being honest to himself his ankle was really starting to hurt now but he ignored it. Steve pushes along with him. They reach a small hill that neither had seen earlier and Bucky frowns, both of them were out of breath and Bucky mainly stood on his left foot.
"You good?" Steve checks, eyes flicking down at Bucky's bad ankle then back up at his face. Bucky nods a little. They get back into position and give the car a push, it slowly rolls down the hill but gathers speed. Steve races after it to make sure it doesn't crash into anything. Bucky goes to follow but his bad ankle decides to be a pain. He trips to the ground, wincing at his ankle, and he watches the car roll off but slow down as Steve catches it, by some miracle. The blonde trots back up to him.
Bucky gives a small smile and waves a little.
"Oops," He mimics Steve from earlier and the blonde sighs. He helps him to his feet.
"I am so, so sorry, I completely forgot," He frets, helping keep Bucky steady. The brunette shakes his head, leaning on Steve's broad shoulder for support.
"Don't worry 'bout, pal," He replies, limping as they walk to the gas station. Steve had pushed the car the rest of the way. The brunette sighs in relief when they make it back. He slumps into the passenger's seat as Steve fills the gas tank.
"Bucky, I'm gonna go find something to help with that ankle of yours, stuff for the road, okay?" Steve informs the brunette after he's done. Bucky nods in reply and casually salutes.
"I'll be here I guess," He muses and Steve nods. He heads into the corner store and finds stuff. Bucky sits semi-patiently in the car but decides to go in anyway.
He limps into the store and looks around. Finding the washroom that's where he hurries.
"Hi, sir, uh, do you happen to know where the nearest town is?" Steve asks the man at the front. He hands him a map and Steve thanks him, he pays for the stuff and heads back to the car to find Bucky gone.
Steve waits patiently in the drivers seat, tapping his fingers along the wheel. He jumps when he hears a woman shriek and a man stuttering apologies, hears Bucky stuttering apologies. He raises an eyebrow when he sees Bucky limping out the door as fast as he can, a very large, round woman following behind him. Bucky races around and dives into the car, slamming the door shut. Steve looks at him and Bucky was out of breath. He runs a hand through his brown hair, gulping.
"Hi," He says breathlessly to the blonde.
"What'd you do?" Steve asks as he pulls back onto the road, and they join in with the rest of the few cars. Bucky shakes his head, blowing out a breath.
"I thought she was pregnant. How was I supposed to know she just had more body weight than the average human?" Bucky groans and Steve laughs. The brunette smiles; his laugh was adorable.
"Glad you find it so hilarious," He pretends to pout, a small grin cracking through. Steve smiles and shakes his head.
They drive for hours and they were in the town that the gas station worker had directed Steve towards. Bucky had fallen asleep several times but Steve was starting to get used to it.
Steve yawns widely and rubs his eyes tiredly, pulling to a stop in front of another gas station to fill up.
"So we're at the nearest town," Steve speaks up and Bucky nods a little, watching him.
"Yeah," He says a little quietly, because he didn't want to go so soon. Steve goes to reply but his phone starts ringing. With one hand he fills up the gas tank and with the other answers his phone, he lifts it to his ear.
"Hello?" He asks.
"Steven Grant Rogers where the h*** are you!" He hears an anxious voice shout and he sighs. Of course it was Tony. Bucky glances at him.
"Calm down, Tony," Steve sighs.
"Where are you? I've been worried sick," Tony frets. He was very protective of all his friends.
"I'm almost in Alberta," He answers and sighs as he hears Tony start ranting again. Bucky raises a questioning eyebrow. Steve talks to Tony calmly and eventually ends the call.
"Who was that?" Bucky asks curiously, sliding down in his seat. Steve puts his phone in his pocket and finishes up with the gas before answering.
"My friend Tony. Wondering where I am," He informs and Bucky nods. He suddenly looks a little suspicious and gives Steve a look.
"You're headed towards your place next, right?" He checks. Steve looks at him and slowly shakes his head.
"Where do you live, Steve?" He asks.
"Brooklyn," The blonde sighs and Bucky groans.
"Brooklyn? That's days outta your way, Steve. You didn't," He complains, running a hand through his hair.
"Well what's done is done now, you're here and I'm not headed back until I know you're safe so there," Steve declares and Bucky huffs. He folds his arms across his chest.
"You, sir, are an a**h***," He declares and Steve gasps.
"I am offended! Jerk," He huffs, trying not to smile. Bucky sighs exasperatedly and shakes his head, smirking a little at the blonde goofball.
"Whatever. It's getting late, Steve, and you need to sleep," He comments, looking at him. Steve shrugs a little. He really did look exhausted; driving for hours on end would do that to you.
"Listen, why don't I find a hotel or something? It oughta' be more comfortable than a backseat of a car," Bucky reasons and Steve shrugs a little.
"Backseat is fine," Steve insists and Bucky rolls his eyes.
"Steve, really, it's no problem. Anyway, I need to find a place for tonight to reorganize and plan to find a way to my meeting," Bucky muses and Steve considers this.
"Okay," he agrees and Bucky smiles. He heads into the store and asks the manager about nearby hotels. Steve yawns again and puts the gas pump back in the slot then pays. Bucky comes back out, his limp a little smaller than a while ago.
"Two miles down the road, take two rights," Bucky informs, walking over to the car and folding his arms on top of it. Steve nods and stretches.
"Well, let's hit the road then," he replies and Bucky pouts a little.
"What'd the road ever do to you?" He asks, crossing his arms. Steve gives him a look and Bucky grins.
"Wow. Ha ha, very funny, Buck," Steve snorts, getting into the driver's seat.
"I thought I was," Bucky retorts, sliding into the passenger seat. Steve looks at him and Bucky smiles, the blonde smiles back with a slight shake of his head. He starts the car and buckles up, Bucky follows suit.
"Two miles down the road and two rights?" Steve double checks and Bucky nods.
"Yep," he replies, popping the 'p'. Steve nods and drives down the road, yawning. Bucky watches him quietly, forcing himself to stay awake. Steve runs a hand down his face with a small sigh, he was so tired.
"Almost there?" Bucky asks after a long silence and the blonde nods.
"Yeah, should be coming up pretty soon," he muses, keeping an eye out for a hotel. Bucky raises an eyebrow when he sees it. He taps Steve's arm and points.
It was old and rickety, the paint peeled off the sides and there were practically no cars. Bucky shares a glance with Steve before he shrugs a shoulder and gets out.
"Charming," Steve says sarcastically, looking it over.
"You said it, Steve," Bucky murmurs before walking in. The blonde locks the car and follows him in, the wooden porch creaks under their weight. Bucky pulls the door open and it cracks, he sighs.
An old man looks up and peers through his rimmed glasses then makes a small, surprised noise.
"Gilda! Guests!" He yells in a croaky voice, turning towards the door behind him. He slowly turns back to the boys and folds his hands together to rest on the desktop. The two look at each other and walk forwards.
"Room for two will cost double," he says and Bucky glances at Steve with a raised eyebrow.
"Your call," Steve muses, nudging him forwards. Bucky scowls and Steve shrugs a shoulder and mouths 'sorry'. With a sigh the brunette turns to the front.
"We'd like one room," he informs and a toothless grin spreads out on the man's wrinkled face.
"So you're a couple?" He asks and they both blush, Steve shoves his hands in his pockets and looks down at the ground and Bucky clears his throat a little.
"Uh, no, no," he assures and the man deflates a little.
"Pity. You'd make a cute couple, blondes and brunettes go well together," he comments and Steve shuffles a little. Bucky hands over the money to pay for the night and takes the key.
"Pleasant fellow," Bucky comments as they walk down the hall.
"Wonder who Gilda was," Steve muses, Bucky shrugs and puts the key in the lock then twists it with some difficulty. He pushes the door open and raises an eyebrow at the room. Surprisingly, it wasn't a terrible mess covered in cobwebs. If anything, it was a little too dark. Bucky walked in and flicked a light on, and that alone made the room look more alive.
There was one big bed, a rickety rocking chair, two bedside tables with lamps and a small tv in front of the bed.
"So, top or bottom?" Bucky jokes and Steve rolls his eyes.
"Ha ha. So what's the plan?" Steve asks, taking a seat on the edge of the bed. Bucky sighs and sits on the bedside table.
"I'll take floor, you have the bed?" He suggests and the blonde shakes his head.
"Then you'll be uncomfortable," Steve says and Bucky shrugs again.
"Like I haven't done that before," he snorts.
"Still," Steve yawns before continuing, "it should be fair."
"Steve, just take the bed, I'll be fine," the brunette sighs. The blonde gives him a look and Bucky raises an eyebrow.
"Really?"
"Geez, Steve, yes," he rolls his eyes.
"Okay then. Thanks," Steve says and Bucky nods.
"No problem, pal," he replies with a small smile.
Steve was fast asleep minutes later, he hadn't bothered getting under the covers. Bucky leans back in the rocking chair with a small sigh, he looks at the blonde and smiles a little. After a while he falls asleep in the chair.
Hours later, Bucky started to squirm in the chair, making it rock and squeak. He whines a little and shifts anxiously. After a moment more he jolts awake. He sits up in the chair, heart racing wildly. He puts his face in his hands and swallows thickly. He raises his head and rubs his eyes then looks at the blonde. Of course, he was a pretty heavy sleeper and the noise somehow hadn't woken him. Bucky relaxes a little and leans back.
He had to admit; he had fallen for Steve. Over the course of days they've been together, he's fallen for him. But that was ridiculous, Bucky knew it would never happen. He could dream, though.
"Buck? What're you doin' up so early?" Steve asks groggily, sitting up. Bucky looks at him and sighs a little.
"I, uh, had a bad dream," he admits and Steve sighs then nods.
"You gonna' be okay?" He asks and Bucky nods slowly.
"I'm invincible, of course I'll be okay," Bucky says and Steve smiles.
"Okay. G'night, Bucky," he hums and Bucky nods a little.
"Steve," he says suddenly and the blonde looks at him. Bucky takes a breath. "Can I, uh... well... do you know what Hogwarts is?" He blurts and inwardly bashes his head against a wall. Steve raises an eyebrow before nodding a little.
"Well, uh, y'know Slytherin?" He asks and Steve nods again. "Can I?" Bucky continues and Steve looks at him. Bucky holds his breath worriedly.
"That's the pickup line you're using? Wow, Buck," he snorts. "Yeah, sure." He adds and Bucky perks up.
"Really?" He tests and the blonde nods.
"It's more comfortable here anyway," he reasons and Bucky nods before climbing onto the bed beside him.
"G'night, Buck," Steve says and Bucky nods.
"G'night, Steve. Thanks," he whispers. After a while he hears Steve's breathing even out and he lies awake. What just happened.
Morning rolls around and Steve was the first to get up.
"Bucky, come on, we gotta go," Steve says, shaking the brunette's shoulder. Bucky whines and buries in the covers.
"I'm tired," he whines, hiding his face.
"You can sleep in the car," Steve replies and Bucky mumbles something before sliding out of bed.
They get ready for the day in the small bathroom, brushing their teeth and futzing with their hair.
Bucky glances at Steve while the blonde fixes his hair, which would not lie flat.
"I think I love you," Bucky blurts out of nowhere and inwardly curses. Steve pauses and looks at him.
"What?" He asks and Bucky swallows.
"I, uh, think I love you," he repeats slowly and Steve blushes.
"Beat me to it, huh?" He laughs nervously and Bucky raises an eyebrow.
"Huh?"
"I think I love you too," he admits and Bucky's mouth drops slightly. He stares at Steve who was blushing down at the floor.
"No way," Bucky whispers. "You aren't kidding me, right? 'Cause that'd be rude." He adds.
"I swear."
"Hmm. Prove it," Bucky challenges and Steve raises an eyebrow. Bucky folds his arms, he wanted to be absolutely sure Steve loved him and wasn't just saying it.
"Okay, I will," he replies. He puts his hands on Bucky's hips and pulls him closer and the brunette raises an eyebrow.
"I can do better than that," Bucky snorts, leaning forward a little. Steve angles his head down slightly and the brunette angles his head up, so their lips were just about touching. "That all you got, Stevie?" Bucky whispers and the blonde hesitates a second before kissing him. Bucky closes his eyes and kisses back, he runs a hand through Steve's hair. They kiss gently, almost as if worried of the other's reaction.
They eventually pull away and Bucky looks at him, his eyes wide.
"Did I prove it?" Steve says softly and Bucky smiles a little.
"Proven enough for me," he hums, leaning up and kissing his cheek, catching the corner of his mouth and Steve blushes a little. Bucky smiles softly.
"We should, uh, probably get going," Bucky sighs and the blonde nods a little. The brunette kisses his cheek before walking out of the bathroom. He smiles a little to himself.
Out of nowhere his narcolepsy comes back and he curses before he feels himself falling backwards. He hits the edge of the bed and tumbles to the floor. Steve hurries out and curses when he sees him.
"Crap, why now, Bucky," he sighs, carefully lifting him up off the floor and onto the bed. He moves his hair from his face and sighs again. They really had to get a move on. He grabs their small amount of things and packs them up, then carefully picks up Bucky and carries him out.
"Eh?" The old man croaks, peering at them through his glasses. Steve shakes his head as he turns to go, then trips over something fluffy and stumbles.
"Watch where yer steppin', blondie!" He hollers, hobbling out to the agitated cat that Steve tripped over. He picks her up and she hisses at Steve, she swipes at him.
"Now, Gilda, dear," the man croons, stroking her soft fur. Gilda hisses at Steve again and he huffs. He walks out, holding the brunette carefully.
He gets him seated and buckled up before hitting the road again. He glances at him now and then while he drives.
Bucky wakes slowly and smells coffee and food. He sits up a little and rubs his head, where it'd hit the floor. He leans his head back and curses quietly, making Steve glance over at him.
"S***, that hurts," Bucky breathes, rubbing his head.
"You gonna' be okay?" Steve asks and the brunette nods.
"Yeah. Is that coffee I smell?" He asks and Steve smiles a little, he picks up a cup and hands it to the brunette. Bucky sighs contentedly.
"Awesome, thanks," he says gratefully, taking a sip of the dark liquid. The blonde glances at him and smiles then nods.
"Of course. So where's this meeting taking place? It is today, right?" Steve checks, eyes back on the road. Bucky nods.
"Today, yeah. And it should be in the town hall," he muses, taking another sip of coffee. "In Alberta already?"
"You were asleep for a while," the blonde replies and Bucky hums something then nods.
"Here we are, town hall," Steve announces, pulling up to the curb. Bucky nods a little. Steve looks at him, noticing how quiet he is. "Buck?"
"Hmm?" The brunette replies, looking at him.
"You okay?"
Bucky smiles a little, he didn't want to go already, he knew Steve'd have to leave back home after this. Steve lived in Brooklyn, Bucky didn't.
"I'll be fine," he says but his voice cracks slightly. Steve sighs softly and Bucky hugs him. "Maybe I'll move to Brooklyn." He adds and Steve smiles softly. He kisses his forehead.
"I still love you, Buck."
"I still love you, Steve," he says quietly and the blonde smiles. Bucky unbuckles and turns to the door before hesitating, turning back and kissing him. Steve kisses back gently, holding the brunette steady. Bucky reaches up and tugs on his hair a little.
"Oh yeah. Work," Bucky breathes when he pulls back, blushing a little. Steve nods.
"Go get 'em, tiger," Steve smiles a little and Bucky nods.
"Thanks for everything, Steve," he says quietly and Steve nods again, he smiles slightly.
Bucky climbs out of the car and checks he has everything. Quickly, he scribbles his number on a scrap piece of paper and slips it to Steve. With a sigh and a heavy heart, he waves to Steve as the blonde drives off.
He turns and walks into the town hall and looks around with another sigh. He'd had the time of his life with Steve and was gonna miss him. He wondered if his job was worth losing the blonde he cared so much about.
////
Steve found himself glancing over at the empty passenger seat twenty minutes later. He missed him already. Maybe he'd make some music or something about Bucky, that's what all musical artists did, right? Made songs about love and loss? That's what it seemed like. He sighs and shakes his head a little.
////
"To begin, we'd like to thank our representatives who made it from a while away," Alexander Pierce says and the others nod towards Bucky. He was staring at his shoes, thinking. If he was going to go to Brooklyn, he'd have to pack, say goodbye to his few friends, tell Steve, find a place to stay, get a job...
"Mr. Barnes?" Pierce snaps his fingers and Bucky looks up. He knew what he was gonna do.
"Uh, I'm sorry, but something important's come up, I have to run," he says hurriedly and Pierce frowns.
"This is the most important meeting of the year, Barnes."
"Huh," he replies, looking thoughtfully off into the distance. "D'you... d'you see that? It's my care level. Oh no, it's dropping! Sorry, sir, seems like I can't care less." Bucky replies. A muscle in Pierce's jaw ticks.
"You're fired, Mr. Barnes."
////
"You, Steven Grant Rogers, are an absolute a**h***!" Tony yells when he sees him.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, something came up," he says, putting his hands in the air a little bit before letting them fall back down.
"D*** right something did, so what's his name?"
Steve blinks, Tony raises an eyebrow and crosses his arms.
"Name, Rogers. You heard me," he says and the blonde sighs a little.
"I could tell him, you know." A familiar voice chimes.
Steve turns around and his eyes widen.
"Hi," Bucky says almost meekly, giving a little wave. Steve wraps him up in a hug and Bucky smiles and hugs back.
"Before you ask how, I was fired and just took a plane here, it was a little faster," Bucky explains and Steve shakes his head, grinning.
"You're crazy."
"Only a little."
"I have a feeling this is the guy?" Tony chuckles and the others blush and nod.
////
Steve was still an artist and Bucky started a coffee shop. They were together, and they were happy that way. Bruce's pill called Buzz worked pretty well, Bucky found; if he took two, that was. Sleep attacks were less, which he was grateful for. Their lives were good.
////
Hey guys, I hope this worked out, it took me a long time to do so I hope you like it.
