Chapter 7: Bad News

*1459 Words, sorry it's short again*

(Steve's POV)

*high school senior year, 1936*

The field smells of freshly cut grass and teenage boy sweat. There is a slight breeze and leaves fly through the air. This should be a good day!

Fall sports is ending soon as we approach winter and I am really bummed. I wanted to play football so bad, just like all the other strong boys, but the coach said no for the 4th year in a row.

So, I sit on the bleachers with everyone else and watched Buck throw the ball into the goal.

"WOOOOO BUCKY!!!" I scream, standing up and throwing my arms into the air. He shoots a glance at me and I blush.

Ever since that night we ate the pig blankets we have been showing more "affection" lately. Not in public of course. We go home almost twice a week and well......you know......

Make out until I have an asthma attack and he cradles me to bed while playing with my hair.

You know, normal stuff.

I am still a virgin though, so yeah.

I know it's a disease and it's wrong, but I've never felt better in my whole life.

My mother doesn't think it's a sickness and not only does she work at a TB ward, but she is die-hard catholic.

But people still seem to have a problem with same-sex attraction, so here I am:

Cheering from the sidelines.

Like every game for the past 4 years.

*the sports game happens and the ball is thrown and shit, I don't know. I can do research about stab wounds and how to conquer Europe for the sake of writing, but when it comes to sports.........I would rather fall off a train.*

*oh and Bucky wins the whole game and now they are all walking home*

I walk over to give Bucky a hug and congratulate him but a hoard of girls are around him.

"Hey Steve! I think I found us some dates for tonight," He winks at me and I almost fall over.

I have very fragile joints.

And a very exited fella down there too.

Oh god.

"Ha Buck! What is it this time? Gonna go see a movie and then some dinner? Or is this a different kind of date?" I place a smirk on my face and stare directly into his blue-beautiful eyes. His hair is styled perfectly and he smells of oranges. Small amounts of facial hair poke out from his chin and beg to have my face pressed against them. When he smiles, his face lifts up and the world seems so perfect.

God did a good job with this guy.

The girls laugh and start conversing with one another and Bucky leans down and puts his lips to my ear.

"Depends if we can get the girls out of it and the house to ourselves." He says with a smirk, I can feel his smile near my ear and suddenly my friend from beneath became a lot more aware and exited about the situation at hand. So much so, that he is trying to peak out to say hello.

Uh-oh.

We continue walking and pass some old buildings that must be clubs. I hide my growth with my trench coat.

"Hey little honey, why don't we head back to my place and get it on?" A low voice suggests to one of the girls in front of us.

"No way John, go away!" She looks at him in disapproval. We do too.

"It wasn't a choice," He grabs her by the bottom and pulls her into a kiss.

"Get off me, weirdo!" She screams as she pushes away from him. The whole street is now focused on the situation, yet no one seems to be helping.

John moved closer to her with a look of pure evil, his hands out-stretched, ready to grab her.

I step in his way.

"Stop. She said no, so back away."

I can feel how fast Bucky stepped next to me; it was almost like a reflex.

"What are you gonna do about it, kid?" The beefy idiot questions.

I look at Buck and he looks at me. We nod heads and I jump on his back. We chase John down the road. Signs fly by as Bucky runs like his life depends on it.

"She said no!" I scream, holding tight to Bucky's strong, muscular shoulders. He runs towards John who runs around a corner.

I jump of his shoulders and look at John, who is running away.

"Yeah you better run!" Buck yells, smirking as he looks back at me. You can see his skin turn a slight shade of pink. It's really cute.

We walk back to the girl who is being comforted by her friends.

"Thanks guys. Thank you so much." She gives us both a kiss on the cheek and starts to walk away with her friends.

I pull my trench coat belt tight and walk towards my house, where a group of men in hospital gear stands.

"What?" I ask, starting to hyperventilate, "What is going on?"

I recognize one of the workers from my monthly check-ups.

"Dr. Reynolds? What....W-What is," I break down into a sob and fall to the floor as I see my mother coughing on the stretcher. A group of men surrounds her, all wearing masks.

"MOM!" I feel a hand grab mine as I go to run towards her.

Bucky.

He is not stopping me though. He is going with me. He holds my hand as we walk over to mom.

"Bo-*cough* Boys." A smile forms on her sweat-drenched face. She lets out a few coughs and I step forward, not back. I place a hand on hers and she lets out more coughs.

Bucky is in full tears, I lend him a hug. We all stand there crying over my mother's dying body for a while until she can speak.

"Bucky?" Her words come out raspy and dry.

"Yes, Sarah?" He moves the hair out of her face and keeps his hand cupping her face.

"You never let anyone mess with your head. You are so strong. You cared for my Stevie, even when no one would. I love you." She wipes a tear off his face and he steps back and keeps my hand wrapped in his.

"Steve?" She whispers, barely able to speak, "You always stand back up. You have a heart and you use it. Don't let anyone knock you down. You die? Walk it off." She coughs and leans in closer, "A strong heart will take you further than any physical strength. A strong heart means you'll never quit..."

She stops talking and drops down to her pillow.

Oh no.

This can't be happening.

She's the only family I have left!

"Mom?" I shake her shoulder. No reaction. "MOM!" I yell, no response. "MOOMMM!!!!" I practically scream as I pull her corpse into a tight hug, not letting go, medical staff pull me off her and give me to Bucky. I go numb.

It all goes black. Everything.

I wake up to Bucky smiling over me, running his fingers through my hair. Tears run down his face as he pulls me into a kiss.

His lips feel like home and I feel my heart leap out of my chest.

We continue kissing for a while until I am comforted enough to stop crying.

"She's gone." I sigh, shoulders dropping. I place my head on his shoulder and he rests his head down on the top of my head.

"I know, Steve. But you heard what she said. Strong Heart. We can't forget her, but we have to move on. It's what she would want, Stevie." He pulls me into a hug and I let myself collapse into his huge arms.

"I know. It's just hard." I sigh again, wiggling my feet out of my shoes. Pieces of newspaper fall out of them and Bucky lets out a small laugh. "Just forget you saw that."

"No, I'll make sure never to forget. Your mom's name was Sarah and you wear newspaper in your shoes. That's my one of a kind boyfriend everyone!" He stands up and holds out his am, as if announcing something.

"Jerk," I chuckle as he pulls me up into a kiss.

"Punk," he says in-between kisses.

I pull away for a second, realizing what he said, "W-Wait? Did you say BOYFRIEND?"

A look of panic overcomes him and he frantically explains, "No, I mean I did say that, I didn't mean it though, I mean we are close friends but not that close, we ju-"

I pull him into a kiss to get him to shut up.

"Whatever you say, boyfriend." I smile and latch onto him for a hug.
