The Helpless Actress Part 2

Now forgive me but as I said before answering services were not what I was used to. Let alone someone calling in and saying that they were thinking of doing something very drastic. Mike was in the middle of freaking out but still trying to remain calm in the phone with her. I was trying to get any information I could from the multiple account folders.

"First do you have a service agreement with us? That way I can find out who you are and send some help." Mike said in a calm and non panicked tone.

I couldn't hear the woman on the other side but I was curious so I went up to Mike and he turned the phone to the side. She was crystal clear alright.

"Oh woe is me! The world! The life! Is it really worth it?" The woman sighed repeatedly.

Was this really how girls talked in this time? It kind of sounded like something out of a play. Of course Mike's eyes went wide and I just wanted to get her name to send help from but then suddenly we both heard the door open from the woman's apartment and she gasped. A male voice came on from behind the woman's.

"Gertrude are you bothering the service again?'' The male asked and then the line went dead.

"Gertrude!" Both Mike and I said in unison.

With a name now we would be able to find the records from her contract...if she did indeed have a contract with the service. I began to search and we didn't know how long we had been searching until Peter and Micky came to take their shift. Explaining what had happened before to them they also joined in the search.

Looking through every file, every folder in the entire place there was no client named Gertrude. Micky and Peter agreed that if she called back they would call the police and hopefully they could find a way to track the call or something. It wasn't very reassuring but we had nothing to run off of except the hope that she would reconsider or the guy we heard would help her get the help she needed.

Mike and I walked out of the call answering service office and it was easy to tell that he was disheartened but I was somewhat skeptical. If someone was able to say they were going to end it, why would someone else question them about bothering the answering service again? Did this mean that she had done it before? Were there other answering services she had done this with as well? So many questions were going through my mind as we walked down the sidewalk.

"You've gone quiet, I bet you are just as worried as I am." Mike comments putting his arm over my shoulder.

"Sort of, it's just what the guy said on the phone made me thing. He asked if she was bothering the answering service again...that must mean she may have done it before right?" I asked which made Mike pause and look over and me as he tried to process what I just told him.

"Your right, that is an odd thing to say. He didn't sound mad or even worried, just maybe frustrated or a little annoyed." Mike pondered as he looked around.

"Either way with no contract and no last name there is no way we could find her tonight." I said trying to surprise the yawn I was hiding.

"Micky and Peter got it covered, if they find out anything I know they will call us." Mike reassured me as he and I started to walk again.

"What makes you think that?"

"I told them too." Mike smiled down at me.

It was nearly sunrise by the time Mike and I settled into the bed. Granted he was in his bed and I was in Micky's sense he wasn't there at the moment. My eyes had shut and I was just about to drift off to dream land when I could hear the muffled sound of the phone ringing. Odds were that they more than likely Peter had put the phone under the glass cake stand lid so that was why the ringing was muffled.

"Mike..." I mumbled as loud as I could, still low on energy.

"Huh?" He groaned not even moving in his bed.

"I think the phone is ringing." I now yawn as I try to force myself to stay awake long enough to tell him that.

"We have an answering service remember, they'll take care of it." Mike tried to say but he yawned almost every other word.

"Unless that's Micky and Peter calling..."

It took about ten seconds for him to realize what I just said and he jumped up out of bed and rushed downstairs. Blinking my eyes I tried to stay awake but sleep won me over and I passed out right there in Micky's bed. Not expecting Mike to come back up and shake me awake.

"Ah! Stop that! You'll give me whip lash." I say as I hold my head after Mike stops shaking me due to me yelling.

"Sorry, she called again but this time she gave a different name! Melissa and they tracked her down! We gotta get there and convince her not to do it!" Mike says with more energy than I clearly had.

Mike stood up and started to get dressed and I held my eyes shut as I tried to understand what he had just told me. It was a lot at one time and now I had to get up again.

Thankfully Mike agreed to drive to the address that Micky had given him and I was in the passengers seat. It didn't take long to get to the apartment complex and we rushed inside and straight to the door of the woman. Mike knocked loud and hard for 6 in the morning. The door opened and there stood a very confused woman in a long white night gown that a movie star would wear.

"I am on the phone, is there something I can help you with?" She asks the both of us.

On the phone at 6 am still in the night clothes? Granted she didn't think it was completely impossible just not probable.

"Yes, we are from the answering service and we came here because your message has well brought us here to convince you not to do it!" Mike said in a rush.

"I'm on with them now. End what?" The woman asked again playing confused.

Suddenly the man they must have heard earlier came forward yawning and still in his stripped pajama's. His eyes went wide when he saw us on the other side of the door.

"Gertrude! What is going on here?" The man asked and she turns and smiles at him.

"See my acting did pay off! They came all this way to check on me! I will get that part!" She grinned clearly proud of herself.

"ACTING?!" Mike yelled in shock.

Both the man and woman turned to look at us. Mike was shocked and livid at the same time meanwhile I was going to give her a piece of my mind.

"You mean to tell me this was all an act? You called a center to pretend to be in a serious situation to the point we were worried about you and came over here to check on you?! How selfish are you lady?! That is not right! There are real people out there who can't help but think those thoughts and they do need help. They don't need people like you discrediting them because you need to book an acting gig! Do us a favor and lose that answering services number and keep the acting to the stage! Come on Mike, I'm done with this!" I tell him as I take his hand and we turn to leave.

"Yeah! What she said!" Mike yells at the woman and we turn and leave.

After a few hours of sleep, Mike and I explained to Micky and Peter as well as Anna and Davy that it was all fake. That the woman was using the service to practice how realistic her acting was with her lines. Needless to say they weren't exactly thrilled as well. It wasn't right for her to do and they all agreed on that.

"This is a serious issue and though this episode was written a long time ago with the premise of it being about the lady acting and using such a serious issue in the wrong manner. If there is someone out there with those thoughts please don't be afraid to get help. Talk to a friend, a family member, anyone or even call the helpline. Your life is important and you do matter." I say as I look right at the camera. "See you in the next episode."
