6: The Wild West

Skylar's laughter sounded so exquisite. She had a gentle, soft laugh that showed her pristine white teeth and Andrew just marveled by her.

"What?" She said taking a notice that he was staring at her.

"Nothing! Nothing." He tried to blow off. "Anyways, so do you have any siblings?" He inquired.

"No, I'm an only child. It can get kind of lonely though." Skylar set her eyes downcast just thinking of this.

"That's not so bad." He tried to make her feel better. "I have two siblings, one older brother and one younger. They can be really annoying and so your kind of lucky in a way."

"Yeah, I guess." she spoke quietly.

They had been getting to know the basics about each other the past few minutes. Learning about the person they were stuck with gave they a well deserved break from all the unbelievable things they'd seen and both were becoming more relaxed.

The train was traveling to the next land. Now that they were done with New Orleans and Critter Country they were headed for Frontier Land.

The peculiar IPhone that Skylar had discovered on Splash Mountain had showed them a glimpse of the real Disneyland and something told them it would only get worse.

"Anyways, what do you think Frontier land will be like?" Skylar inquired.

"Mostly dirt, tumbleweeds, and ... us." Andrew shrugged.

It most definitely was not.

The train stopped abruptly and a whole town was in view. The thing was, everything was black and white.

They stepped off the train and into a different world. Horse buggies bustled through the dirt while people also walked around in their old fashion clothes.

Shops lined the street on both sides. With most buildings made of wood and with no color it was hard to identify one building from another.  At the beginning of town was a huge wooden fort with long beams supporting it.

The fort closed off the front of the one street town and it was supplied well. Lots of ammo were at the ready in case of an attack and several various flags were being flown in front.
The sign read "Frontier Land" and it was guarded well.

"Hey you circus folk aren't expected until next week." An angry looking guy in a tux and that had a striped ribbon that read "Mayor" pinned to his shirt approached them.

"Oh we're not from the circus." Andrew plainly said as if it was obvious.

"Now you listen here and tell your Ringmaster to wait another week. I'm the Mayor of this town and my word is the law." He yelled at them catching others attention.

"Yes sir, um Mr. Mayor sir." Skylar quickly said.

"Alright then git go'ng." He waved them off.

"Wow what was his problem?" Andrew said as they hurried in the opposite direction of the Mayor.

"Apparently they're not fond of circus people and our clothes kind of look weird here I guess." She explained.

The two of them came to a saloon that stood out from everything else. It was colorless as well but it was tall and had fancy detail.

"It's The Golden Horseshoe." Skylar pointed out.

"Now I know that this place was important to Walt." Andrew nodded his head.

"They're not going to let us just walk in,
We're kids." She said, looking at him for a solution.

"We'll see about that." He said with confidence and swung the doors open.

Skylar did not follow him in, she wanted to see how things played out first.

Andrew stepped into the saloon and immediately had to dodge a swing from someone's fist. Two men were in a fistfight but Andrew went around to the rest of the saloon.

Only men were in there (except for a few waitress) and they sat down at round tables dealing out cards. Andrew could tell from their expressions that it was not just cards but some sort of gambling. Gold coins spilt over the tables into the jackpot pile and the men had greedy looks in their eyes.

A yellow, foamy drink sloshed around inside of a mug that a man swung around wildly while telling the group a tale. Most men had the same drink and it was not foamy lemonade.

A stage was in front of all the tables farthest from him, it had banners strung across the top and a piano ready to be played. Stairs on the left led to an upstairs balcony also where Walt's special booth was.

Andrew scanned the whole area taking in the scene that looked like it was from an old silent movie or something. A bartender took notice of him and came over to talk.

"You young'ins can't be in here." He said looking at Andrew up and down.

"I'm... Um and here to play?" He answered but it sounded more like a question. Andrew figured if they thought he was hear to gamble maybe they would let him stay.

"You play?" The man asked skeptically. "You'd better not be lying boy, sit down." The bartender pulled out a chair and motioned sternly for him to sit.

Other men around the table looked at him gruffly but Andrew timidly sat down, having not much of a choice.

"Alright now, calm down. This boy here thinks he can play." The guy looked down at Andrew and he heard angry mumbles through out the table. "I'll give you one chance the first coin is on the house and if you don't win after that your out, got it?"

"Got it." He replied quickly. The bartender began to deal out cards to every player. Andrew had no idea how to play but he guessed he'd catch on.

"Now alright for you newcomers here's how it's played. All you gotta do is try to get pairs by asking other people and if not then take a card from this here pile." He said gesturing to a pile of cards in the middle of the table.

"So like Go Fish?" Andrew questioned jokingly.

"I don't know what you're getting at boy but these are cards." All the men around the table snickered.

"Never mind." Andrew mumbled.

Go fish is mainly won on luck so Andrew figured he had a chance. Apparently too much of a chance. He kept matching pairs and had almost won. The only difference between Go Fish and this game was that they were playing with real money, at least the currency at that time.

Andrew did end up winning all the money and no one was happy with him.

"Get out, and stay out!" The bartender shoved him out the door with a bag full of gold coins.

"What happened?" Skylar asked still waiting for him.

"Well I basically got kicked out but I've got a bunch of coins maybe we can buy our way in." Andrew said about to walk back in.

"No you had your chance, now it's my turn. Remember when the mayor thought we were from the circus?" He nodded yes. "This time we are taking the back door." Skylar had a scheming-look.

They snuck around the building without being noticed and sure enough found a back door.

It read "Actors Only." Ignoring the sign the two pushed through the door and entered a back stage area.

It seemed to be empty with its wooden floor and the silk curtain down blocking off the view of people in the saloon. Coils of rope lay on the floor attached to mechanisms up above that controlled the various stunts in the show.

It was silent like no one was there but then they heard girls squealing.

"Quick hide!" Andrew said crouching behind a barrel.

Skylar looked around frantically for a hiding spot but the stage was almost completely cleared.

"I'm so excited! He's here in the audience today!" A girl exclaimed happily.

"I heard he came here just to see us!" Another giggled.

"Hey we're on in five minutes you have to get ready!" A girl said spotting Skylar.

She didn't know how to respond.

"Come on, move your molasses." The girls crowded  around Skylar and directed her through a door. Andrew watched silently, not sure what to do.

Skylar was now in a dressing room with big circular mirrors and a whole lot of clothes. All the girls wore long, frilly skirts with white petticoats underneath. They were can-can dancers and Skylar was about to become one as well.

They fitted her into the costume and powered her face until she was pale white with pink, rosy cheeks.

"Alright we've got to hurry, we're on five." The leader said fixing her hair. She ushered them all onto stage just as the curtain began to come up.

Skylar knew Andrew was somewhere on stage and that she had to somehow give him a chance to get to the only place they hadn't been yet, upstairs.

A piano player began a happy tune and the girls started dancing. Skylar tried to mimic them as best as possible but the dance wasn't exactly easy.

They picked up their skirts and swayed them back in forth in unison while also kicking they're feet up as well. The dance was complex but simple at the same time.

Then Skylar suddenly stepped on one of the girls skirts. It was an accident but caused a chain reaction and she was glad it did. The girls fell over one another, yelping in shock.

Andrew darted down out of his hiding spot and quickly went down the stairs of the stage. Skylar picked up her skirt and ran after him. The crowd was too surprised to realize them fleeing the stage or so they thought.

As Skylar and Andrew ran upstairs a man rose out of his chair and with his hand resting on a pistol he spoke. "Ya'll need justice in this town, and I Pecos Bill am here to duel it out."

That was all he said and he sauntered out of the saloon looking for the sheriff.

Andrew and Skylar found just what they were looking for.

The Golden Horseshoe was very special to Walt Disney. He had opened the Golden Horseshoe with a special party celebrating his 30th anniversary with his wife. Walt had also picked out the very bull horns that still hung in the Golden Horseshoe today.

Skylar and Andrew grabbed this information quickly but when they went down stairs they were greeted with an unpleasant surprise.

The sheriff was there waiting for them. The two jumped over the side of the rest of the stairs hoping to escape. They landed on a table breaking it with a loud snap and everyone turned to look.

Ignoring the yelling of everyone they ran onto the now empty stage and pushed through the closed curtains. The sheriff and now the mayor as well were both on their tail. They followed the two backstage, but couldn't find them.

Meanwhile the two had gone out the side entrance onto the stage once more but the sheriff caught on pretty quick.

As Andrew and Skylar were almost out the door the sheriff saw them. "Stop those two young'ins!" He hollered pointing at them as the mayor came running onto the stage next to him.

The two were out the door when Pecos Bill came into action. "I'll git 'em for you." He said and with a tip of his hat he mounted Widow-Maker, riding out of the saloon.

Skylar was getting trampled with the long skirt dragging behind her. The hot, thick layered clothes they wore in these times were almost too much for her.

They had run out of the saloon, getting the information they needed but now where?

"Andrew wait." She breathed tripping over the skirt for the 50th time.

"You okay?" He asked taking notice in her exhaustion.

"Yeah it's only that I'm wearing three layers of clothes on a sunny day!" She responded sarcastically, still catching her breath.

There came a thundering of hoofs that shook the ground. The sea of people in the road parted and a tall figure riding a brown horse rode through.

"Stop right thar', ya yeller varmits." He called out to them.

They were scared stiff because this man was not joking around, he had a gun aimed straight for them. He wore a red shirt with a vest and green necktie. The brown horse with a golden mane kicked furiously at the dirt and snorted in irritation.

"Now what is your business here?" Pecos Bill asked dismounting Widow-Maker.

"We're uh-- just passing through." Andrew came up with.

"Likely story." He told them critically.

"What about you miss?" He referred to Skylar.

"I'm with him." She replied timidly, but also curiously looking at the strange man. She almost felt like she recognized him from somewhere.

"Well I'll tell ya what, you seem like a nice little lady. I liked your performance." He said once again referring to Skylar. "But you young kin caused a lot of trouble, and I don't like the looks of you." Pecos Bill peered at Andrew.

"What do you propose?" Skylar worded carefully.

"I propose a duel, between me and 'im" He faced Andrew.

"A duel? With swords?" Andrew questioned confused. Skylar rolled her eyes at him.

Pecos Bill scoffed at him. "If ya really don't know this may be easy than I thought. Come on Widow-Maker." He got on the horse and rode slowly enough for them to follow.

"Widow-Maker? That means he is Pecos Bill." Skylar came to realization.

"What did he mean by duel?" Andrew questioned still confused.

Skylar just scoffed as well and began to follow Bill. Andrew trailed behind her still confused.

They reached a rocky area of land with all manners of animals living amidst the rocks. Gopher holes were here and there in the ground and dusty green cactus grew out of the dried out surface.

A dead twisted tree held a vulture on its branch that scanned the plain for anything weak. Everything here was either dead or dying, dried up from the heat.

Giant mountain ranges lined the horizon in the distance and the sky was turning a lazy orange as the sun set.

"We is here." Pecos Bill told them getting off Widow-Maker.  He walked over to an old wooden fence and began set cans on top of it.
"Here." He tossed a rifle at Andrew.

Andrew was taken by surprise and fumbled with it, having a bullet shot into the air.

"Watch what you're doing!" Skylar shouted startled by the shot near her.

"Sorry!" He cringed at her yelling and rested the gun on the ground. Andrew had no idea how to even use a rifle.

"Alright, now those there cans are the targets." Pecos Bill told him. "You do know how to handle a gun right?"

Skylar raised her eyebrows at Andrew. "Uh yeah, of course I do." He fibbed, picking up the heavy rifle.

"Your up first then boy." He gestured to the fence.

Andrew timidly stepped up, heaving the gun off the ground. The gun was heavy and it weighed him down. Andrew looked down the gun at what he thought was how to aim and shot.

It recoiled and the recoil was hard. It hit him right in the shoulder and the gun clattered to the ground. Pecos Bill just shook his head.

Skylar rushed over to Andrew gingerly touching his arm and he winced. His whole arm throbbed with pain.

"By the looks of things I'd say we're done." Pecos Bill chuckled.

"I say we aren't." Skylar took up the rifle with ease. "I'll play but first let's raise the stakes. If you win you can take us to the county jail but if I win then you have to help us on our way."

"Which way you be heading?"

"To the mountain range. Have you ever heard of Thunder Mountain?" She asked, looking into the distance.

"That I have and if you win, I'll take ya young'ins thar but seeing as you is just a girl, I'd say that chance is pretty slim. You'd be better off letting 'im play." He snickered referring to Andrew.

That made Skylar even more mad. "You'll see in about a century Annie Oakley will be around to show you boys up, but for now I'll do it." She challenged, about to aim.

"Skylar wait." Andrew urged, worried for her. "You can't do this, that recoil is really hard."

"Is that because I'm a girl?" She asked getting mad at him too.

"No! It would be hard for anyone."

"Oh well then I appreciate you concern but I will be just fine. I've played the shooting gallery about a million times so my aim is very good and as for the recoil I've been taught how to handle a gun, thank you very much." Skylar emphasized all this with a bit of attitude and then turned to Bill.

"And as for you, you'll see just what a 'girl' can do." She taunted Pecos Bill.

Without another word she aimed and fired. A shot rang out then a clang of a can and one came flying off the fence.

"Well I'll be darned!" Bill commented.

"Wow." Andrew said quietly to himself but Skylar overheard and both their comments put a smirk on her face.

She continued her winning streak hitting anything and everything. When she was done she turned around to two astonished faces.

"How'd I do?" She said still smirking.

"Finer than if you were Annie Oakley herself, who ever that is." Bill said swept away.

"Uh yeah, you did good." Was all Andrew came up with and Skylar turned away from him.

"Well?" She questioned Bill.

"Alright, Alright. I'll take ya two up Thunder Mountain, if that's what you'd like." He gave in kind of in awe of such a good shooter that was a girl.

"Yes. Please and thank you." Skylar replied still pleased with herself.

"Ok then," Andrew said glumly. "Onto to Thunder Mountain."
