2: The Haunted Mansion
The statue loomed ahead of them as they walked through a tunnel of smoke. There was something different about the statue but it was hard to figure out what.
Finally Skylar realized what was missing. "Walt is there but Mickey's just gone." She announced puzzled.
"Yeah, weird." Andrew said barely above a whisper.
The smoke finally dispersed from around them as they walked into the hub. It was completely empty and they could only see as far as the castle, the rest was just black.
Sitting by the statue the dog whined and Walt's bronze head slowly turned to look at them. He walked out of the flower bed and stood in front of them.
Too frightened to say anything they stared up at the tall statue of Walt. He peered down at them and then a smile crinkled on his face.
"You've finally made it. I heard that you had some close encounters with pirates." He chuckled.
"Why are we here?" Andrew blurted out.
"You wanted to go here." Walt told them. Andrew was about to talk but Skylar did instead.
"Where is here exactly?" She questioned.
"The happiest place on earth specifically,New Orleans, as requested." He answered.
"But why?" The pair said in unison.
Walt thought for a moment then responded. "This is where the magic began, with Walt. He dreamt up this place, a place of magic and wonder. He didn't get to see most of the park that's here now but people have always honored him as the founder. Since then things have changed."
"What do you mean?" Skylar asked.
"This land is the root of the Disneyland you know and when this one dies that one does as well."
"This land is dying?" Andrew worried.
"In a sense, yes, and you two are the experts of Disneyland. You are the perfect ones for the job."
"What job?"
"You have to restore Walt's name. Many have taken the Walt out of Walt Disney and I'm surprised you haven't noticed. Like for the newer Disney movies, haven't you seen that instead of Walt Disney presents now it just says Disney presents?"
"I have never noticed that before, but what can we do?" Skylar said.
" You must go to certain places and reveal information about what Walt did for this park. What ever you change here will also change in Disneyland. Walt didn't get to see his company grow into the 21st century but he was the main source of all this and you must remind everyone what he did." The statue urged.
"Pirates of the Caribbean was never finished before he died so that doesn't count but he did help with the next place you'll be going. Here is a bag with a map and other directions, read all of them!! You must go now we will try to help as much as we can."
Everything thing around them started to fade.
"Oh and whatever you do don't scream." The statue yelled as he too disappeared.

Darkness was all they could see for a moment and the statue's words scared them a little. Colors began to mix together and a arch formed in front of them. A tall metal arch stretched above them held up by brick pillars and as they walked through them a massive mansion came into view.
The haunted mansion to be exact. A path led up to this gigantic, old house. Skylar had the bag Walt had given them and she slung it over her shoulder. She walked timidly behind Andrew still wary because of Walt's words.
The mansion's balcony and first floor had lots of green iron work and white pillars supported it's front. The windows, covered with green shutters were perched on top of the second floor and a brick chimney next to a weathervane of a ship on the cupula was on the ceiling. The whole place was twice as big as the haunted mansion at Disneyland, this was a real mansion.
Both walked up the stairs silently and made their way to the door. Andrew took a deep breath in and creaked open the door. Skylar swallowed hard, following behind him.
The place smelled musty and long forgotten. Decked in cobwebs the first room was empty except for a few lit candelabras attached to the wall. A set of doors was before them with a panel on the dark wall next to it.
As they pressed a button on the panel, now what they realized to be an elevator, opened. They walked into a large circular room that was immediately recognized. the stretching portraits hung on the walls growing as the elevator moved and gargoyles looked down on them.
This part was normal but they waited in anticipation for what would happen next. As they went Skylar took this time to look at what they had.
In the bag was first a map of the park. All the rides circled in red were the ones that Walt had worked on. Next was a packet of paper titled "Directions".
"Andrew look at this." she said showing him the paper.
"The lands are labeled here." Andrew pointed to the map. "Look there's New Orleans."
"Number one, know that dead men tell no tales." Them gave each other a confused look then Skylar went on. "Number two, they may watch you but don't look at them."
"These are all none sense." Andrew said annoyed.
"Number three, what ever you do don't scream that makes them come out." Skylar finished with a gulp.
"Makes what come out?"
The lights of the whole elevator flickered and then went out. They came back on dim then went out again. Skylar held her breath and Andrew just stood there.
In the dark there was a ding and part of the wall opened up into another room. Putting away the map and directions, Skylar stepped out with Andrew following.
A long corridor was ahead of them but not the usual one. Flashes of lightening came from the windows. The same creepy pictures hung on the purple wall but they didn't change. A dark figure was at the end of the hall.
They walked closer hoping to pass the figure unnoticed but he began to talk.
"Hinges creak in doorless chambers. And strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls. Whenever candle lights flicker, where the air is deathly still, that is the time when ghosts are present. Practicing their terror with ghoulish delight." he laughed menacingly.
After saying that Andrew realized something while Skylar looked confused and probably scared. "That is the ghost of Paul Freeze." he said, his voice low.
"Who?"
"The voice of the Haunted Mansion dialogue. He died in 1965 and was said to haunt this place." He whispered as they stood in front of him.
Paul Freeze did not direct his words to them but whispered looking away from them. "Foolish mortals." He turned his head and looked at them a few inches away. "Foolish Mortals!" He bellowed, his eyes blazing into them.
He made no gesture to move towards them but the pair rushed by not taking their chances. They scuttled rather quickly into another room and heard organ music playing.
The loud tunes struck out but they didn't come from anywhere they could see. An empty ballroom was where they had walked into, much like the one they were used to.
A dining table was in the center of the long room with China plates and cups on it. Also a lit birthday cake was at the head of the table and some of the chairs were not pushed in as if someone was sitting in them.
A giant crystal chandelier hung on the ceiling and cobwebs covered creepy pictures of random people. A fireplace long empty and cold was layered with dust so much that you almost couldn't see the bricks.
"How do we get out?" Skylar asked quietly.
"We have to find proof about Walt. If I remember correctly, this was one of Walt's last projects he helped with before he died." Andrew told her, looking around. "Do you know where the cast member's backstage are in this place?"
"Yeah, I believe it's in the - attic." She said barely hearing herself as she said the last word.
"Come on" Andrew said walked into another room making Skylar follow.
A chill blasted them and an organ played one long, low note then was quiet. They didn't see the room before the lights turned off. It was pitch black but not silent.
The sounds of small footsteps around them, a groan here, a shriek there.
Skylar and Andrew tried to find each other but ended up further away.
"Andrew?"
"Skylar?"
"Where are you?"
"Over here."
"No over here.
"On your right."
Other voices could be heard as they added in, confusing the two even more and guiding them away from each other.
The lights finally came back on and Skylar found herself alone in a long hallway. Doors lined the two sides of the hall and she walked slowly to one. She tried it with no luck and went to another one with the same result.
Looking in both directions she could not see the end of the hallway it seemed to go on forever. Over and over she tried doors but couldn't get one of them to open.
She walked up to one and suddenly a loud snarl came from inside it. She held in a scream as something clawed at the door. A rapid tapping came from another door as if some one knocking and that's when the voices came.
"Let me out!" A man yelled.
Thinking it was coming from another door Skylar backed all the way up and ran into something big. She turned around petrified to find a large dark green coffin behind her. This time she could not hold in a scream as someone began to pry open the coffin from the inside.
"Now you've done it." Paul Freeze's voice yelled. "And they are being to materialize." his laughter rung in her ears as she ran down the hall.
No matter how fast she ran the hall never ended. Door after door she passed as things groaned and pounded at the doors but she never was able escaped.
Doorknobs spinned and doors bended outward like they were made of rubber. Moaning things called her name and shrieked constantly.
She eventually stopped breathless and hopeless, standing scared stiff against a wall as they began to materialize.

Andrew had heard screaming and knew it was Skylar's. He had ended up in the attic filled with old pictures and furniture.
He had to get to Skylar but also had to get the proof for Walt. Finding a cast member door in the wall Andrew stepped in.
It was a regular office room and he flipped through files quickly. Finding a section on Walt he took them out and scanned the papers quickly.
These definitely talked about how Walt created ideas for the Haunted Mansion. He left a copy for the cast members who worked here to see and then he rushed out with the rest.
Andrew didn't know what would happen now that Skylar had screamed and he hoped he wouldn't find out. Rushing back where he had come from he tried to find her.
A door was back where he had been and he walked through it. Things swooped at his head and shrieks of ghosts, he assumed, filled the air. He saw Skylar on the floor with her head in her knees with things circling around her in a blur.
Doors seems to lunge at him and growl but Andrew tried to show no emotional, knowing that would only make it worse. Andrew pushed through what ever they were and he made it to her. He touched her arm lightly and she jumped in terror.
She saw it was him but she just shook her head and slumped back down to the floor, shaking.
"Let's get out of here, I got the stuff about Walt." he said ducking as things tried to attack him.
"It's impossible, I've already tried." she whimpered her face flushed red.
"There's no turning back now." he said trying to convince her but realized his mistake as she glared at him. "Sorry didn't mean to make that a pun."
"Come on."
"I can't, I'm too scared go on yourself."
"No." Andrew wouldn't leave her and hated to see her in such a bad state.
"We are in this together, whether you like it or not. Do it for Disneyland." He firmly said as spirits tore at him.
She finally nodded yes. Andrew helped her up and quickly they rushed by as ghosts making their appearances and they made their presence obviously known.
Against all the resistance Andrew finally found a door they could open and walked through it. They found themselves outside as a wolf howled in the distance.
A large thicket of twisted black trees surrounded the place. As Andrew tripped over what he found to be a grave, he shuddered but didn't let Skylar know, she was already shaken up enough.
Owls sat on a crooked branch blinking their big yellow eyes. Alley cats meowed sorrowfully flicking their tails as they sat on a brick wall.
Black ravens cawed in the moonlight and they seemed to say "Nevermore." As they flew over Skylar's head.
Five off white head stones shone in the light of the moon and they were men having different expressions on their faces. Skylar and Andrew both recognized them from the corners of their eyes but did not look at them for they felt the stare of their cold white eyes and heeded the warning.
A whole patch of grave stones were spread out among the tall grass. White figures appeared here and there some close to them but Andrew pulled Skylar along. Through the bushes they went but it was not those that tore at them.
Skylar did scream often as white blurs flew by or pulled her hair and eventually they ended up running. Trying not to step on the graves they fled through the cemetery as cold winds of ghosts caused goosebumps on their arms.
Finally getting through the cemetery they ascended a flight of stairs not seeing were they were going due to the darkness. Unseen things ripped them back trying to drag them back down but they pushed on.
"And the ghosts will follow you home." Paul Freeze cackled.
Seeing a light at the end of the tunnel gave them a new burst of hope as they got closer, things still swooping down at them.
"Hurry baaack. Hurry baaack. A distorted woman's voice called as they rushed into the light.
They ended up at the front of the mansion, stilling holding her hand, Andrew pulled Skylar away from where they came out but the spirits would not rest.
Andrew spotted the Hearst and ran over.
" The invisible horse?" Skylar asked dodging attacks.
"If those are real." he pointed to the white blurs. "The invisible horse has to be too."
They swung up on to the front seat and Andrew slapped the reins. There was a horse whinny and the carriage jolted forward.
Clattering over the stone floor was the sound of horse hoofs but they had no idea where to go as ghosts shot themselves at the pair.
Skylar rapidly took of the packet of directions and flipped to the last page read the bottom out loud.
"Please note that you have to go on all the rides if you plan on getting out. This place has a mind of its own so get in and out as quickly as possible. From now on use the Disneyland train to get everywhere. Lastly be careful and always be ready."
The carriage went through the beginning arch and carried on up a hill. And as they reached the top a train, with the bell ringing, came into sight.
