17 (part 1): The Past in the Future

The People Mover, Flying Saucers, Mission to Mars, Adventure through Inner Space. It was all there and some of the other attractions hadn't been created yet.

The giant structure in the middle of the land was the queue and entrance for the People Mover. The little four car 'trains' had cute colors of the 50's and chugged along a track slowly, while reciting a spiel of Tomorrowland's history. Of course now the people mover is history.

Skylar and Andrew decided this would be the first ride they would do, on their detour in the past. It would show them everything in the land and hopefully give them some important information as well.

It did not surprise them to have gone back in time, in a way. Although, it was strange that they were in a futuristic land in the past. The past in the future. Skylar pointed this out but Andrew just shrugged in response, nothing really fazed them that much when it came to the transporting thing.

"You will now be getting a grand circle tour of Tomorrowland aboard the People Mover, the first system of its kind in the world. Since it's opening in 1967 the People Mover has carried more than 50 million guests." A chipper female voice began on the speech as the Mover slowly chugged down the long stretch of the track it had to cover before turning.

Their view was facing the hub but even that looked very different. The trees were so small compared to the present and the Partners statue could be clearly seen gleaming in the middle.

Skylar narrowed her eyes at that piece of metal and tensed up as she remembered when they had last conversed with it. The idea that it talked or moved at all was creepy enough in itself but somehow there seem to be more running it than "magic."

Although a believer in magic, since she had to accept the fact at some point where she was, Skylar and Andrew, alike, were not fans in any kind of enchantment that was done to the statue.

There was another factor, the phone, which had been randomly found floating in the waters of Splash Mountain and worked perfectly fine, had just been called. By whom, they had no idea and it's not like they could dial back.

Andrew picked up on something though. The statue had never mentioned this communication they were given and they had never told him of it. That meant there might be someone else out there trying to contact them, but why?

They both studied and analyzed the hub with their intense gazes until the People Mover finally began to turn left.

Not familiarized with these old attractions very much, they didn't know exactly what the ride consisted of. Much of the old track, if not all, existed still in the current Disneyland within a lot of the new-fangled attractions. Still, this was quite a while before their time and they just hoped the dangers were as outdated as the old rides that held them.

First on the list of sights to see was the inside of Star Tours and they knew this for in the queue of this ride you could still catch a glimpse of the track if you knew where it was. It hid behind a big spaceship from the Star Wars movies. C-3po stood next to it greeting the guests and talking of space travel while     R2-D2 beeped and whooped from the ship which he was supposed to be controlling.

This is what they saw next, or the back of it anyways as they entered the Star Tours building. Of course there was no queue of people but the robots were very talkative as it were.

"Hello, I am C-3PO and this is my counterpart R2-D2." A rather tall gold robot said.

The other one he was referring to, R2-D2, beeped in response to his introduction as he sat in his rightful place on the star speeder. This white and blue droid was always very responsive even though many people couldn't understand his own language. His head swiveled back and forth when he was speaking and as fans of Star Wars people grew fond of the little robot.

Skylar, on the other hand, wasn't much of a fan at all. Especially of the new Star Wars land being built.

"Welcome to the Star Tours Tomorrowland space route." C-3PO greeted the passengers of the People Mover but soon they moved past Star Tours.

On their journey they pasted Star Trader, a store with all kinds of Disney merchandise, and then was introduced to Space Mountain. The narrator told of how exciting and 'out of this world' the attraction was.

The tunnel that they were in got darker and streaks of lights ran all around the Mover just like the ride. They were getting a small sample of Space Mountain and over a speaker a person in mission control was telling them directions for flying.

Finally, they saw some light and got past the snippet of Space Mountain. Next to the Mover were paneled windows that showed they were right above the Magic Eye theater. This theater used to play Captain EO from 1986 to 1996 but when Michael Jackson died it returned for a while. Now it was replaced most recently by a serious of clips from past Star Wars episodes and a preview of the most recent one 'The Force Awakens'.

Skylar remembered when they used to play Captain EO. She never knew of Michael Jackson until he died but she appreciated his music now.

Their view also included the Matterhorn in the distance. The giant snowy mountain was intimidating and now as they thought of it, facing the abominable snowman was not something they wanted to do anytime soon.

The People Mover made its way outside and the speaker introduced 'Mission to Mars' across the way. The building stood in front of the Matterhorn as they moved along. Lastly, they saw the skyway with its bright colored buckets gliding slowly down the long line that entered the Matterhorn.

The whole layout of Tomorrowland was so foreign to the two visitors. It had changed a lot over the years but they could still recognize where a lot of things were in the present.

As they moved along, Autopia was just starting to come into their sight as well.

"Warning! You have invaded the electronic realm of the master computer program. Prepare for the game grid of Tron!"

The People Mover glided into what was now known as the Innoventions building.

It was just plain dark inside at first and then a lightspeed-like force seemed to shoot them forward. They went deeper and deeper into the computer moving through grid upon grid of data. Finally they were on the "floor" of the game and light cycles rode and swerved in front of them. The players had their disks in hand ready to slash the other to the death.

Tron's concept always fascinated Andrew, being stuck in an arcade game and all. Skylar had never seen the movie but now wasn't any more of a fan.

The light cycles danced together trying to cut each other off, since that killed the other. The light trail behind the cycles turned into something of a solid wall and crashing into it wasn't pretty.

The cyclist on the right was suddenly taken out and then the other veered in front of the People Mover as if to shatter them to pieces as well. Everything went dark. Then they exited the tunnel.

They came out right over Autopia and saw all the little bright colored cars lined up in three different lines. The Matterhorn was off in the distance again but the skyway was clearly seen coming out and entering the mountain.

The People Mover had chipper elevator music playing now as they slowly chugged up a small hill.

Down below were the various twisting and turning roads of Autopia although no cars road on them. Under the Monorail track the speaker spoke up momentarily to introduce it.

Going through some thicker trees the rest of Tomorrowland was obscured from their view but the sun glistened beautifully through the tree tops. They saw a track now and then of either the Monorail or Autopia but besides that the People Mover was completely isolated in its own little woodsy world.

Skylar turned the IPhone over and over in her hands hoping it would just light up with any sort of announcement but the screen remained dark. She sighed and gave it a rest by setting it next to her on the bench.

Looking out at the past, Andrew sat on the bench across from her. He didn't know what to make of someone reaching out to contact them but it must have been urgent. It didn't vex him as much as it did Skylar but seeing her so unnerved made him think about it more.

"It's so weird being here." He commented, hoping to start a conversation.

"Always is." Skylar responded tersely.

"Do you think this is what it was really like? The People Mover I mean."

"Why wouldn't it be?" She said matter-of-factly.

"I don't know."

Out of words, he slid the phone off the bench and took it in his hand. Skylar wasn't watching him and she gazed out of the car as they began descending down the slope.

Andrew lit up the screen by pressing it on, then tapped on the camera icon. There was no data on the phone at all except the things they had gotten before. All the other original apps it came with were wiped clean or had never been used.

Once in the camera, he scanned his surroundings in the screen. Stopping at Skylar, he took a photo of her. The sound went off and she turned.

"Did you just take a picture of me?" She asked uneasily.

"Yes."

"Don't."

Andrew snapped another.

"I'm serious, don't!" Her voice got higher with slight embarrassment.

"Why ever not?" He asked attempted to sound innocent.

"I'm am NOT photogenic." Skylar emphasized.

He lowered the phone a tad and looked back at the first one he took. Caught off guard, the photo of her was amazing, looking out peacefully with perhaps a slight smile.

The second one caused him to stifle a laugh, for once she found out what he was doing Skylar did not look at all pleased. She was upset but her expression was quite funny.

"What?" She demanded.

"Oh, nothing." Andrea trashed the photo, which threw him back to the first one. "But you are most definitely photogenic."

"Say what you want." Skylar seemed to snub her nose at him, but then said playfully. "You're not going to flatter me."

"Wouldn't dream of it." He reply nonchalantly.

The People Mover began to travel onto level ground again and more of Tomorrowland came through the trees.

They came over a body of water that was not familiar to them at all. It was surrounded by grassy shores and rather large rocks. There was also several different colored things standing on the shore but they were too small to see.

Skylar peered over the opposite ledge she had been looking at and tried to rack her brain for what that might be or is today.

"I think that's the Motor Boat Cruise." Andrew said finally.

"That's right!" She responded with slight excitement. "Wow, I've heard of it, I think. Don't know much about it though."

"I'm pretty sure it's part of Fantasyland, actually." Andrew said, surprised he had remembered that detail.

Seeing this ancient ride made them both a little awestruck. It had only lasted so many years as an attraction because it had so many technical difficulties and it just wasn't all that popular.

Suddenly, Skylar had a thought. "Take a picture of it."

"I thought you weren't a fan of photography." Andrew replied, raising an eyebrow.

"Don't you get it? It'll be our proof, the thing we're here for!" She explained, getting ebullient about it.

"That could work." He said, realizing how big this was.

Technology wasn't it's best in the golden years of the old attractions and online there wasn't much to be found that showed how they really were.

Taking a photo of the lagoon below, Andrew passed the phone to Skylar.

Autopia came out below them again and only a few of the cars sat empty on the track. The Skyway buckets came out the side of the Matterhorn and headed off in the direction of Fantasyland. The old orange submarines waited at a dock and slightly bobbed in the water. The older version of the Monorail also waited above what was now Nemo.

The People Mover traveled around, passing right beside the Monorail and going under the line of empty Skyway buckets.

The old mixed in with what they still had at the park today was a sight to see. Seeing it all gave them a newfound hope. A hope that if they could see all the wonderful things the history of Disneyland had then everyone else could too.

The pictures of the attractions they were taking were proof of their importance and their impact that shaped the park everyone loved today.

That was the pair's job and they felt at that moment, they were getting it done.

"They've got it all wrong. They have no idea what they're doing." Quinn paced back and forth on the sleek metal floor.

"They have made it this far." Kenton sighed.

"And when they get out?" She questioned nervously.

"You mean if." He regretted correcting her.

Both feared for the newest pair put in there. They knew exactly what was in store for them, as far as they knew. It was always the same, except for the results.

Some made it, others weren't heard from again.
