16: Astro Orbiter and Blasters

"I'm trying to override the central controls of the Partners statue but this data base is very strong." He said not appreciating the lack of faith she had in him.

"We have to contact them, their lives are in danger." She urged him to hurry up with the hacking but he had made no progress.

"Our lives are in danger too, if we meddle much with this." He snapped back, continuing to type vehemently on the keyboard.

The two sat in the underground base, having access to all the technology one could ever ask for. Although they didn't exactly have access to be there.

They were no older than 16 and both were around 5'7. Both girl and guy with dark red hair that almost appeared black.

"They're just like us, Kenton, we can't leave them alone." The girl said.

And he responded.
"We didn't get help, Quinn."

Skylar and Andrew were in Tomorrowland, the future, full of endless possibilities of what might happen in the unknown.

Walt Disney had said at one point that "Times and conditions change so rapidly that we must keep our aim constantly focused on the future." Perhaps that's why he built the future as one of his lands. He wanted people to do things that they couldn't do at the present time but could possibly do eventually. Like kids driving cars, or people going to space before even astronauts had.

Tomorrowland had changed with time as the future became the present they had to make it more futuristic. It always would change as time went on and as technology got more and more advanced.

The plaque at the entrance of this land read "A vista into a world of wondrous ideas, signifying man's achievements... a step into the future, with predilections of constructive things to come. Tomorrow offers new frontiers in science, adventure and ideas: the Atomic Age, the challenge of outer space, and the hope for a peaceful and unified world. ~ Walt Disney, July 17, 1955."

The place was definitely filled with things that hadn't even been invented yet but they were sure hypothesized about.

Andrew and Skylar walked through Tomorrowland gawking at the sights of the future. It was just like the Tomorrowland they knew only everything was real.

People whizzed past them on jetpacks, rockets flew through the air and the people wore the weirdest clothes. The first giant structure they came across was easily recognized even though it was a weird sight.

Astro Orbiter's massive framework stood 2 stories tall with it's gleaming planets revolving around in an orbit. The base color was bold bronze and the rest consisted of dark blues and purples making up the constellations. It was extremely shiny and looking at it from a certain view glared light into your eyes.

They admired it as, a voice was projected addressing those aboard Astro Orbiter.

"Star pilots, you are ready for blast off in 3,2,1!"

There was a sound of a type of motor starting and about 12 rockets began to take flight. The only difference between this and the ride was that the rockets were not attached to the structure! They flew freely and soon zoomed out of sight.

"Next star pilots now boarding." The speaker announced again.

12 more rockets rose out of the ground to replace the ones that had just left. More people in suits filed in and settled into the one person vehicle.

Andrew and Skylar put two and two together and decided to get in line. A few more shipments of flyers and it was their turn.

The rockets also had a base color of bronze along with stripes and dots of blues, oranges, and brown. There was a bright light at the front for night flying and the tail has three fins around it. As they had observed, a contrail would propel the vessel through the air at much higher speeds than they ever usually went.

Being released into the launching area, Skylar and Andrew each picked out their ship which was right behind one another. Both stepped over the side fin gingerly and sat down in the vessel.

The only control they had was a joystick but unlike the regular one, they hoped that this one did not only direct up and down; or it would be very difficult to fly.

The instructor's voice came over the speaker and he counted down until their takeoff.

Andrew gave a nervous glance back at Skylar and she had the same expression. Extremely anxious.

These rockets were relatively safe when attached to a giant metal pole that held it in the air but free flying with no seat belt couldn't be approved by Ocea. One turn leaning too much to one side and the passenger would tumble out. They would not be sealed with an indestructible glass dome over the top, despite what they wished.

So, as they slowly pulled the joystick towards themselves and the rocket rose off the ground, their anticipation rose with it.

They flew smoothly, for the most part. Once in the air, all the other rockets took off and zipped to the right of Astro Orbiter in the direction of another building. Skylar and Andrew attempted to follow them by maneuvering the levers in that direction but the ships had minds of their own. They flew around the building unsystematically and the pilots weren't really controlling it all that well.

Although the ride was amazing. The wind whistling all around them, the spectacular view of the whole land. Everything was breath taking.

They were up with the birds and the clouds at one point. Then back down zooming over the city.

Everyone was busy walking or flying somewhere and no one paid attention to two rockets being flown by extremely young star pilots.

Skylar tried to control hers and eventually got the hang of it. On the other hand, Andrew wasn't really directing it at all. He made sure it didn't crash and went in the general direction after her, but for the most part it swiveled and turned on its own.

They flew by so many weird shaped buildings and below were about a thousand different winding roads and streets overlapping and twisting laid out.

"That must be Autopia!" Yelled Andrew to be heard over all the tumult.

"The People Mover!" Skylar shouted back, noticing that the old attraction was there as well.

They circled back towards Astro Orbiter and the rockets directed themselves to land at a station to the right.

There was still something that was bothering Skylar besides the Walt statue. That hippo, the hyacinth hippo, had talked to her, if not verbally then mentally. She knew it but didn't know how and little did she know that all she had to do to find out was look at the IPhone in the shoulder bag.

It was vibrating violently and kept on buzzing non-stop but they couldn't hear anything over the blaring of the alarm.

"Star rangers! Come in star rangers!" Came a loud female voice like she was talking over a radio.

A bright red light flashed and the alarm continued to resound in the echoing hallway. They had arrived at Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters.

This was a target practice attraction, you would basically hit the targets with a light up blaster to earn points and a rank. Although, the two believed this version would be a little more realistic, due to their prior experiences.

They had walked a few steps into the hall when the alarm had gone off and now they were stopped in their tracks. The floor was a slick plastic of some kind and the walls had images and messages of Buzz and the Aliens  embossed on them.

The alarm persisted in interrupting their thoughts and made it too loud to do anything but sign language, which neither of them knew. Too loud to think, talk, or hear a cell phone ringing they missed a chance at some vital information but they were none the wiser.

"They're not answering!" She said in despair.

"They're preoccupied, I'm sure." He said knowingly, in an annoyed tone.

"Can you track where they are?" She questioned hopefully.

"I doubt it, the IPhone barely made the trip there. I'm surprised it is even able to receive texts. Tracking its location would be nearly impossible." He replied somberly.

"Nearly?"

"I'm just trying not to sound so pessimistic. I wouldn't know how to ping the phone, not in there."

Buzz Lightyear's slick green and purple boots squeaked on the plastic floor. For a toy, he was exceptionally tall  even without a clear helmet around his head.

"Our mission is to find Zurg's robots and destroy them." He spoke in an assertive voice. "The Aliens will retrieve the power source, while you focus on the robots."

Skylar and Andrew followed the towering space ranger down the hallway and through many twists and turns. He informed them of everything on the way but as to where they were going they had no idea.

In the ride, they sat in a doom buggy-like vehicle that was equipped with light up blasters attached to a cord. Here they didn't know what to expect.

More alarms sounded off as they continued to briskly walk toward their destination.

Other voices called out commands.

"Commander Lightyear has ordered all new recruits to report to the main field immediately."

"We're being surrounded by the giant robots, emperor Zurg's is still out there, send reinforcements now!"

"Calling star command! Call in star command! We are under attack, section 12. Repeat, we are under attack!"

They all seemed to be patched through some kind of radio and projected on the main speakers of the building. Buzz grimaced at every announcement and they continually quickened their pace.

Finally, Buzz stopped below a green and blue arch.

"These are your blasters." He informed them, giving them both a blue gun with a green fin and a opaque spiral front that flashed green, red and blue waiting to be shot. "Aim at the Z targets, they are the creature's most vulnerable places."

They both nodded in agreement and held the blasters firmly in their grasps.

"Through that doorway and you will have walked into the traveling pod. If anytime you have to leave it, for any reason, just remember to put on the suits. They'll keep you grounded, floating aimlessly around in space isn't the best idea with Zurg loose."

They nodded again and Buzz dismissed himself to go help others.

More different colored lights flashed and their blasters waited to begin. They walked under the arch and did indeed enter the same type of vehicle that the ride normally had. Except there was no joystick to maneuver the pod, instead there were many different buttons and controls in its place.

"Face forward and stay seated. Your shield will lower in a moment." Said an instructive voice.

They saw an almost invisible dome seal the top of the pod and it was transported into space. There wasn't much to see at first besides the stars but then a giant red mechanical arm swept the sky in an attempt to annihilate them.

Their reaction was to shoot the blasters at the giant robot that was attached to the arm but nothing seemed to disable the monstrosity.

They couldn't control the way the pod was going and sooner or later they would be crushed.

"Time to put on the suits." Skylar said taking one off the rack in a hurry.

Andrew did the same and soon they were zipped up in the skintight bright white and green attire with the space dome over their heads. It also allowed them to communicate over some type of radio, what ever they said patched to the other.

They had just raised the pod hatch open and space-stepped out into "space". They weren't exactly floating but they were walking on an invisible platform with space all around them.

Skylar held her blaster at the ready, as did Andrew but their backs were turned to each other for they were very busy.

On Skylar's side she shot at the robot attached to giant red arm and the rest of it was just as scary. It's face was square and it's eyes buzzed with electricity. The droid's mouth was filled with wires and it's chest had bulbs flashing and dials spins inside.

Skylar blaster didn't have much effect on the monster as it hit it with different colored ammunition.

On Andrew's side he fought a slightly smaller orange robot called "BoxoBot" whose head moved up and down while it clamped its mouth open and closed.

He also wasn't succeeding very well in disabling this mechanical menace but he didn't have the best aim either.

It was a puzzle to him that Skylar had all these athletic abilities. Not that girls couldn't or normally don't but she could handle a gun and knew her way around the "art" of throwing knives it seemed. The way she had a feel for using weapons such as the stalactites or a sword made Andrew a little wary.

Her skills were amazing and he often lauded them but they were also a little alarming. It made him really wonder who she was on the "outside." If they ever got out of the Happiest Place on the Earth, maybe he'd find out.

They advanced slowly, walking down the invisible platform that seemed to keep them grounded in space. Neither really talked much, and when they did it was only to notify the other to move on.

The robots didn't seem hell-bent on destroying them and it was only their mission to disable them long enough for their batteries to be taken out. After all, they were only toys.

Some robots were small and easy to take out and others had the Z targets in harder places to access. Skylar defeated the majority of them while Andrew assisted, and they made it into the next "room" if space had rooms.

Now it was like they were on the actual planet Z and there was all manner of strange creatures with targets on them.

"Aim for the ones that are lit up, first." Skylar advised over the radio.

"Got it." Andrew said back, hoping to hit anything let alone the lit-up ones.

The inhabitants of that planet were very bizarre. Two of them were very elongated worms that stood a good 20 feet in the air and swayed to and fro. Others looked like dinosaurs in a way and others still of course were robots.

They made their way through the chaos past erupting volcanos and trees dripping green goo. They didn't really know if they made much progress but the two found their way to part of the planet where they could see out into the dark sky filled with stars.

Out there, there didn't seem to be any other things to aim at.

The sky was gorgeous, like looking through a telescope out in the woods where there were billions upon billions of stars. The view also had a pink tint to it because of the weird atmosphere surrounding the planet and the fact that somewhere the sun was slowly rising. It was a breathing-taking sight but Skylar wasn't gazing at it like Andrew was.

In fact, her back was turned to it.

"What is---" Skylar began in a bewildered tone.

"What?" Andrew said in a disappointed tone. She hadn't been watching the sky with him. Then he added. "What, are you---spacing out?"

He turned around to see her staring at a dark tunnel that didn't seem to contain anything.

Cautiously Skylar took a step inside it and all around her it lit up with streaks of color running horizontally down the tunnel.

Downcast, Andrew turned back toward the pretty scene momentarily and saw Zurg fly through the sky on the bright red rocket. Everything was happening accordingly, sadly.

He toiled after her into the tunnel and they encountered an experience much like they were in hyperspace. The streaks of red, white and blue were strangely patriotic and lit up their faces.

On their other side of this passage they encountered Buzz Lightyear, blaster aimed and firing at Zurg in the red spaceship. Along with him were other space rangers and several little green aliens.

"Blast him with everything you've got!" Buzz yelled over the tumult of blasters and Zurg's yelling.

The little green aliens maneuvered miniature rockets their size to extract batteries from all the robots. Zurg fought back with the droids by directing them to attack the troops.

Skylar joined in the fight almost immediately and took out a few of the bots single-handedly.
Andrew trailed after her and shot at the rocket without much success.

"Hit the Z emblazoned on his chest!" Skylar called out, referring to Zurg.

Rumor has it, that was a secret target that earned you 100,000 points in the actual game. People figured this was how the top players of the day got like 1000,000 points.

The problem was, Zurg was always so far away, no one was ever accurate enough in their blasting to hit it.

Although, Skylar was about to, until something made her pause. Out of all that tumult and everything that had her attention, she swore she felt a buzzing from inside the bag. In the process of running around, it must have been jostled in such a way that caused the phone to slip down into a place where she could feel it vibrating against her leg.

It caught her off guard, and against her will she looked down at the shoulder bag as a reaction. Stymied a moment, Skylar gave Zurg enough of a respite for him to launch another attack of his metal army. She, however, was too engrossed in the fact that she really felt a buzzing in the bag.

But it was impossible for someone to call them, right? Who would it even be?

Still, the idea captivated her and took her away from their current situation.

"I should be ruling your planet by now!" Zurg hollered in rage.

His ship was taking serious damage and it wavered around in the sky, slightly out of control. It came closer to the space rangers and closest to Andrew of all people. He was in perfect range to hit the target on Zurg's chest, even with his aim.

Andrew directed the blaster into position and was ready to fire.

Meanwhile, Skylar had just finished fishing through the shoulder bag and had the phone grasped in her hand. As she drew it out, she saw that it was truly being called by someone but the random number had no contact to help clue her in as to who it was.

She hit the answer button and called out "Hello?"

Skylar thought she heard a voice over the phone but it was drowned out by the noise of Zurg's rocket crashing in front her. Despite the fact that she was almost crushed, Skylar wasn't frightened but mad that she couldn't hear anything. She raised the blaster once more and in one shot, hit the Z emblem.

"Way to go space ranger!" Buzz said enthusiastically.

Skylar rolled her eyes and questioned the phone again.

Although she didn't notice it, the background and attraction blurred into a smear of green, white and purple.

When everything cleared, they were in the past, and all Skylar heard was a blank dial tone.

Hey guys.... sorry it took me so long to write this, although it came out pretty good if I say so myself. Life has just been annoying lately but I'll always find time to write!
Thanks for waiting.
