12: Why did it have to be snakes?

"The temple of the forbidden eye." Andrew said in awe as the ruins of this massive temple loomed ahead of them.

"Want to read the directions?" Skylar suggested as they hiked up to the entrance.

"Why not? They can't leave us any more lost than we are already." He remarked and Skylar began to scan the packet of papers.

"Number one, don't look into the eyes of Mara." She read aloud.

"Go figure." He commented.

"Two, beware of snakes." Skylar said in an annoyed tone. "Maybe we should stop reading these. Number three, Mr. Bones leads the way out."

"Those are either inescapably clear or make no sense what so ever." Andrew sighed as she folded away the papers.

They had reached the ruins and inside was dimly lit by some old burning gas lamps. They walked through the long hallways, walls and floor cracked about in several areas. Disassembled boobytraps were among the temple but the two avoided the remnants carefully.

They entered a series of tunnels lined with bat guano. Wind whistled through the tunnels and the faint sound of someone mining was all that they heard. They walked in silence through the tunnels then walked out into a larger room but there was minimal to see with.

The only thing they could see were three doors, large enough for a car to go through, set before them.

"The Chamber of Destiny." Andrew breathed at they stared in awe at the sparkling doors, each one was different.

There lay a decision for them. Each door had a different gift presented by Mara.

The door on the far right was the Fountain of Eternal Youth colored in a faint blue, depicted the special liquid flowing from a vase above the doors. It was said that who ever drank the holy water would be forever young.

In the middle was the Chamber of Earthly Riches colored in a bright gold color, treasure and coins were carved into the door. Unimaginable treasure and fortune was assumed to be waiting for them behind that door.

Lastly, the third of the far left was the Observatory of the Future colored a faint purple, had large eyes staring right at them. What was behind this door was uncertain but it somehow gave you a glimpse into the future.

All three doors glistened before them.

"Which one?" Skylar said quietly staring at the choice before them.

"I don't think it matters, you know what happens." Andrew replied, thinking about Mara awaiting them behind the giant set of doors.

"All right then, let's go to--- the fountain of youth." She decided hastily and stepped up to the door.

"Feeling old?" He laughed at her decision.

"No, but you never know when that kind of water could come in handy." Skylar shrugged as Andrew joined her side.

"You have chosen." Boomed a voice and the Fountain of Youth door lit up in front of them.

The door went dark and it moved open slowly. Illuminated by blue light the roomed glowed and a tall slope going up was what they started to climb. All along the walls were paintings of beings drinking the water and becoming young again.

They heard a small rush of water and the walls seemed to reflect light off the waves of the unseen liquid. They climbed up the slope some more and found the water source, a small stream trickling along side the road.

Reaching into the bag, Skylar pulled out a small vial.

"What are you doing?" Andrew asked as she dipped the tiny bottle into the water.

"Like I told you, for emergencies." She justified, corking the bottle and shoving it into the bag.

They arrived at the top of the slope and confronted Mara. Giant snake statues lined the walls leading up to a giant statue of Mara. Her eyelids were shut but they were wary as they approached her.

Suddenly Mara eyes flashed open and it was so fast they had no time to look away. Her eyes shine blue and her pupils were so big staring into them before she spoke.

"Foolish Mortals! You looked into my eyes! You're destiny now lies behind the Gates of Doom!" She cried and the statue began to crack and rust over the whole surface.

Stone crumbled and the room trembled to stand as it fell apart. It was only small pieces that fell at first but as boulders began to barely miss them, the two ran into the next room on the right side of the statue.

Lightening flashed on the walls of the long stone corridor they entered, illuminating giant cobra statues. They ran through the hallway-like tunnel and arrived at the Gates of Doom.

There Indiana Jones stood trying to force the gates shut. Inside the gates pulsated a green and red mist swirling and seeping toward them.

"Why did you look into the eyes of Mara?" Indiana scolded as he struggled with the doors. "Go ahead without me, I will meet you on the way out!"

Andrew headed to the next room but Skylar was reluctant to go. Indiana said nothing more to her but she knew what awaited in the next rooms.

Turning the corner they got a high view of the Cavern of Bubbling Death. They looked over the edge of the cliff and into this vast pit of lava. In the distance they can see a large wooden bridge crossing over this boiling liquid and another statue of Mara although this one was eroded to a point that half her face was gone.

Into another room they went and it was a series of caves, filled with skeletons! On the floor, hanging from the wall, surrounding them, completely surrounding them.

Skylar contained herself for the moment being, but those things were erie. Piles of skeletons everywhere, but none made any movement, thankfully.

Still, the feeling in that room was              'bone-chilling'.

"What now?" Andrew wondered aloud, looking down on a skeleton laying across a rock.

"Look for Mr. Bones, I guess." Skylar replied uneasily.

Mr. Bones was a hidden Mickey in the regular ride of Indiana Jones. He was a skeleton that leaned against the wall and wore Mickey ears that read 'Bones'. He was very hard to see in the ride for the car sped by so fast but now the two looked for him among the mess of skeletons.

He was in his usual spot, hidden against the murals of the wall that gave the illusion that the cave was much larger. Mr. Bones was leaning against the wall with a grin displayed across his bony face.

Once spotted they both made their way toward the Mickey-eared skeleton, stepping around the others carefully.

They approached the dusty old figure but didn't have the slightest idea of what to do with him.

They felt around the skeleton for any button, lifted his hand up that fell back down limply and finally Andrew picked up his hat. Dust flew everywhere causing them to cough but a door next to the skeleton slid open.

Placing the hat back on Mr. Bones, Andrew followed Skylar into the dark room.

It wasn't only dark but pitch black as the door shut loudly behind them.

Music that you'd hear in a horror movie played, first quietly then slowly grew louder. Noises of things scurrying around the room and the breeze of things surrounding them were not pleasant.

Skylar felt around in the bag for a flashlight hoping it would provide her with one. Fortunately, she found one and switched it on but they soon wished they had no light source.

The light of the flashlight revealed a stone wall, covered with all manner of insects. Beetles and roaches surged along on the wall and swarmed all around them.

The light flickered and it was once again dark but they didn't stop to find batteries. Running through the small room they found another opening and ran out into the light.

The far wooden bridge they had seen in the distance earlier was what they were standing on now. Feet below was the bubbling lava but there wasn't much fear from falling for the bridge was thick enough to hold a car.

They walked across the bridge coming too close for comfort with the gigantic statue of Mara. Although eroded she was fearsome and her eyes still were glaring.

At the end of the bridge two statues of snake heads breathes green mist when the two walked under the archway. There a jeep was sitting there with the engine on just waiting for them.

Andrew jumped into the drivers seat without hesitation but Skylar paused.

"You know how to drive?" She asked nervously, standing at the side of the passenger seat.

"Not in the least sense." He responded. "Besides the wheel doesn't even move." Andrew gave a tug on the drivers wheel and it spun, moving the car wheels to the right.

Skylar looked as if she'd rather drive but their was no time to switch seats.

There came a loud rattling sound, like someone shaking a big maraca. Around the corner, a 20 foot rattle snake slithered toward them, with his eyes glinting. It's forked pink tongue flickered in and out as it tasted their scent.

"Don't move." Andrew whispered, as the snake fixed its eyes on them. It swayed back and forth ready to strike.

"Wasn't planning to." Skylar said back, holding her breath.

Then Skylar realized something: the rattle of the snake sounded similar to a vibrating cell phone. She recalled seeing this study on Animal Planet and carefully slipped the cell phone out of the bag.

She switched on the vibration and turned on an alarm which immediately got the attention of the reptile.

Skylar bent down to the floor and forcefully slid the IPhone to the large snake. For a moment it was perplexed by the vibrations and that drew it's attention away from the humans. It's eyes were only distracted for a second then the snake flicked the phone away with it's tail, causing Skylar to grab it quickly. In a flash, Skylar jumped in the Jeep and Andrew hit the accelerator.

The snake lunged at them but missed as them skidded around the corner.

"Why did it have to be snakes?" Andrew said quoting the famous Indiana Jones.

"No time for puns." Skylar shuddered but was glad to leave the snake behind.

He looked at her in a peculiar way for their humor was all they had to lighten their dark situations.

"Watch where you're going!" Skylar yelled as the Jeep swerved away from a wall and Andrew's attention was drawn back to the road.

"Well excuse me but I've never driven before!"

The Jeep took a dip and went barreling down a hill all the while they hollered at each other and simultaneously yelled form surprise.

Through another room filled with only skulls, past bubbling lava with geysers and escaping another dark room filled with unknown horrors, they reached the second to last corridor.

Andrew screeched the car to a stop and they fell back in their seats.

"What is it?" Skylar questioned.

"Duck!" He yelled and the Jeep jolted forward.

Skylar ducked under the dashboard and Andrew tried to drive while also bending down as arrows whizzed past them.

The paintings on the walls had a hole where ever the arrows were shot from but still they were unpredictable. These ruins were ancient but the traps had not seemed to age with it.

"This is the last part." Andrew breathed as they stopped in the darkness and out of the arrows range.

"Let's hope Jones is there."

Sure enough he was, Indiana dangled over their Jeep on a rope , trying to jump in.

The massive ball rolled toward them threatening to crush them as it got nearer.

"Get me out of here!" Indiana hollered swinging from the rope.

The ball seconds away rushed toward them.

"Back up, back up!" Skylar shouted as Andrew shoved the gear into reverse.

They sped backward, then bolted forward and dove under the stone ball and into the darkness leaving Jones behind.

There was a deafening crash and as they came into the light they could see Indiana Jones standing with his whip out next to the cracked ball.

"Not bad-- for tourists." The archeologist said to them. "Now stay out of trouble."

"Easier said than done." Skylar scoffed and Andrew stopped the car and responded to her.

"You got that right."
