Chapter 9: the bell test
My alarm clock went off.
I groaned and rolled over, trying to hit the snooze button, but failed and just ended up knocking it down. Great, now I had to get out of bed to turn it off.
I groggily looked at the time, it read 4:22. Exactly thirty eight minutes until Kakashi showed up.
As I finished my morning routine, I grabbed an apple, then paused.
Oh, and don't eat any breakfast, or you'll puke.
I stared at the apple longingly. After a few minutes of debating I finally took a bite. An apple couldn't hurt, it's not like Kakashi would know.
Hmm... If this test is enough to make us puke, then I'm going to need these.
I fingered a few soldier pills that I had bought during my stay here, before packing them in my jacket pocket; as well as some kunai, shuriken, and a katana.
The katana was definitely my favourite weapon. It was a dark kind of metal (like Nico's Stygian iron sword, for all you PJO lovers) and had an embroidered dragon on the hilt. It was very slick and camouflaged well with my outfit, nothing too flashy, which I was grateful for.
As I arrived, surprise surprise, I found Sasuke leaning against the tree, with his hands in his pockets. As I passed him, I let out a small 'Hmph', and he grunted in response. An irk mark appeared on my forehead and I took deep breaths.
Don't kill him, don't strangle him, just breathe.
I sat down a waited against a tree. And waited... Waited... Waited...
At 5:30 Sakura appeared, Naruto trailing soon after.
Naruto huffed, resting his hands on his knees. "Sorry I'm late! I- huh? Where's Kakashi sensei?"
"Late," I answered irritably. Sasuke grunted in agreement and I sighed.
Sakura gained an irk mark on her forehead. "Ugh I overslept! I didn't even have time to blow dry my hair!" She furiously tried to pat down her hair, only for it to spring back up once more. She slumped in depression.
"Yeah! And I didn't have time to brush my teeth or change my underwear!" Naruto complained.
Sakura gained a disgusted look on her face and scooted away from Naruto, "That's gross Naruto."
I nodded in agreement, a grimace on my face, "I'll have to agree with Sakura on that one."
Sasuke grunted, and my eye twitched.
We waited 5 minutes...
10 minutes..
15...
20...
30...
I dozed off around half an hour.
It was dark. I looked around, it seemed as if everything was lit by a dim light.
Where am I?
Hello.
I whirled around, "Who's there?" I called, looking around uneasily for the source of the voice.
I'm right here.
Suddenly a little girl appeared in front of me, and I yelped and jumped back in shock.
"W-Where did you come from?"
The girl smiled, "Why, I've been here the whole time."
"O-Ok," I started, kind of creeped out, "That's not creepy at all..."
The girl gained a thoughtful look on her face, "I guess you could say that I'm like your conscience. Except, I'm not exactly. I am a spirit that was sealed inside you at birth, therefore I know everything about you, seen everything that you've seen through your eyes."
I paused, this was a lot to take in. "What's your name?" I asked the girl.
The girl laughed sweetly, and I shivered. I wasn't quite used to knowing that I had a spirit inside of my head.
She smiled, "That's classified, but you can call me Rin. I am the spirit that controls ice and snow."
"So you're like some sort of ice goddess or something like that?"
Rin smiled and her eyes crinkled, "Yeah, something like that." Then her face turned grave. "Listen," she said, "Since I was sealed inside of you for so long, we developed something called a spiritual bond. This means, when I find that you are ready, I will be able to lend you my powers. I didn't find any reason to do this in the past, though once you reentered this world, I decided it was time."
I stared at her in shock, "So you mean that I'll be able to control ice and stuff?"
Rin nodded, "That's not all I can do, I was also the one that saved you and brought you here."
My eyes widened, "That was you?"
Rin flashed a peace sign, "You bet."
Suddenly her image started to get a bit distorted and I frowned in confusion. Rin's face once again turned grave as she looked me in the eye.
"You're waking up now, remember, I'm always here. You just need to figure out how to summon me in and out of your mind. Farewell, Sena."
"Wait-" but it was too late, she disappeared into thin air.
"-ena... Sena...SENA!"
I yelped and jolted up in surprise, "Who's on fire?"
Sakura sweatdropped, "Nobody's on fire, Kakashi sensei is here." She glared at Kakashi as she finished her sentence. Hm... I wonder why.
I looked down at my watch and my eyes bugged, it was ten o'clock. Four hours late...
This guy never ceases to impress me.
I rolled my eyes at Kakashi, "Let me guess, you got lost on the path of life or some other stupid excuse?"
Kakashi raised an eyebrow but nodded nevertheless.
"Alright," he said, "The test is simple." He held up three bells and jingled them.
"This clock is set for 12:00," Kakashi pulled out an alarm clock, "Your goal is to get these bells from me before the clock strikes twelve."
I frowned, "And if we don't"
Kakashi did that creepy laugh/cackle and I shivered.
"If you don't, then you will be tied to a stump, while you watch me eat lunch in front of you. Oh, and you're also getting sent back to the academy," he said cheerily.
Ours mouths gaped open and even Sasuke's eyes widened.
So that's why he didn't want us to eat breakfast. My eyes narrowed, Sneaky bastard.
Everyone's stomach growled, including mine. True, I had an apple but that was almost four and a half hours ago. I groaned, this was his plan all along.
Preventing us from eating also weakened us, making the test considerably harder. I had to admit, it was a smart plan. Dirty, but smart.
Good thing I brought soldier pills...
Soldier pills, I learned, helped refill your chakra reserves to give you more energy. Quite useful when you're low on food supplies.
Kakashi eyed us lazily, "Are you ready?"
Naruto snickered, "You couldn't even dodge that eraser, this'll be a peice of cake!"
Kakashi's eyes narrowed, "Class clowns are usually the weakest fighters."
Naruto instantly stopped laughing as his face contorted in fury. "I'll kill you!" he roared, charging at Kakashi with a kunai in hand.
Suddenly Kakashi disappeared, only to reappear in a gust of wind behind Naruto. I gasped as well as the rest of my test.
That speed... I didn't even see him move.
Kakashi was crouched behind Naruto, and held his kunai backwards so that it pointed at his own head.
"Rule number one," Kakashi recited, "Never let the opponent get behind you."
Kakashi released Naruto, "Plus, I didn't even say start yet."
"Ready." All of our eyes narrowed, and I reached towards my pouch.
"Set." I tensed and discreetly slipped a soldier pill in my mouth.
"Go!" We all jumped into the bushes.
