Chapter 60 - Chase

This is Dr. Jean's Banana Dance and the part of the song that Chase was singing starts at 2:45

Chase's POV

Amy's piercing cries ring through the air, waking me from my sleep. My eyes flutter open and the red numbers on the digital clock on my bedside table alert me that it's two in the morning. There is shuffling noise, followed by hands reaching for Amy.

"No," I whisper. "Let her try to sleep again on her own." The arms retreat.

Aerial and Mason told me that they're trying to get Amy to self soothe since their pediatrician gave them the green light.

To give myself peace of mind, I touch her forehead to check her temperature, releasing a sigh of relief she isn't warm. Then I tentatively feel her diaper, which I find dry and decide to let her cry for a few minutes to see if she can get herself back to sleep.

My eyes drift to the clock. Two minutes have passed. Two minutes of Amy bawling her eyes out. It's taking all of my willpower not to cradle and kiss her back to sleep. Diego is sitting on the ground watching us in the dark. "I haven't taken care of a child in a long time but is it supposed to take that long?" Comes Diego's almost frantic whisper.

Evidently, he's having just as hard a time as I am, trying to ignore her wailing. Another minute passes and I'm twitching, my arms aching to soothe her. She can't be hungry either because we fed her and followed her nightly routine. Maybe a lullaby might help?

I take a deep breath and start singing. "Hush little baby, don't say a word, uncle's gonna buy you a mockingbird. And if that mockingbird won't sing, uncle's gonna buy you a diamond ring..."

By the fourth time I've finished singing the song, Amy is still bawling and I cave and scoop her up. Mason will not be happy about this, but how could I not soothe her! I spend the next few minutes giving her kisses, singing and rocking her, and her wails finally start to subside.

I sneak her pacifier back into her mouth and being very careful not to wake her, place her in the middle of the bed.

Diego flicks off the lights and moments later, he leans over the bed and kisses my cheek. "I didn't know you could sing," he whispers.

I release a muffled giggle and Diego kisses the side of my mouth before whispering, "I love you, little lamb."

A yawn escapes me and my eyes flutter close. "I love you too, DiDi."

Fortunately, Amy doesn't give anymore trouble after that, but wakes us up, by crying, at six in the morning. However, this was to be expected since this is her usual time to wake up, according to Mason.

I lift Amy into my arms, releasing a wide yawn, while Diego rubs his eyes with both hands. He looks absolutely adorable with his jet black hair sticking up in all directions and the left sleeve of T-shirt rolled up to his shoulder, showcasing his ripped bicep.

Yawning again, I take the crying baby to the kitchen and use one hand to make her formula. Leaving it to cool for a few minutes, I change Amy's diaper. Diego enters the kitchen a few minutes later, face washed and hair less messy, as I screw on the lid of Amy's bottle. He takes a still weepy Amy from me, after kissing my temple and starts feeding her while I head to the bathroom to freshen up.

When I return, cartoons are playing and Amy is happily drinking her formula. I snuggle next to Diego, resting my head on his shoulder and watching the cartoon animals sing and dance across the screen.

After a few minutes of serenity, I peck Diego's cheek and head to the kitchen to start breakfast. Diego loves coffee and drinks at least one cup a day, usually more, so I start the coffee machine and put on hot water so I can make tea for myself.

I peel and slice the avocado, not being able to resist the urge of singing the guacamole part of Dr. Jean's Banana Dance song. Then I boil two eggs, toast the bread and slice the tomatoes, adding a dab of pesto sauce to the sandwiches, before cutting them in half. I grab a tray from the cupboard and put the two sandwiches and beverages on it before taking it to the living room.

"Wow that looks amazing!" Diego exclaims, and Amy seems to agree since she giggles and clenches her little fists.

"Only the best for my DiDi!" I exclaim setting the tray on the table.

Diego finishes feeding Amy while I spread out her blanket on the floor. He shifts to sit cross legged on the floor, with Amy on his lap, waving her plastic keys in front of her. She babbles a little, scrunching up her face in an effort to grab them. I sit in front of them, watching Amy play with the keys as we eat in comfortable silence.

Minutes later, I release a soft giggle when I spot a piece of avocado at the side of Diego's mouth. My boyfriend gives me a quizzical look and I giggle again. "You have avocado on your mouth."

"Lick it off," Diego says, in a teasing manner, sticking his chin forward, closing his eyes and grinning.

Another giggle escapes me, and although I know he's joking, I decide why not. Being careful not to make any noise, I swiftly move onto my hands and knees and move towards him. My tongue flicks out and I lick the avocado from the side of his mouth, causing Diego to gasp.

His eyes immediately fly open, and I release a string of giggles when I see the bewildered expression on his face. I press a quick kiss to his lips and return to my sitting position.

We finish breakfast and spend the next few hours playing with Amy and making sure she gets her tummy time. Aerial and Mason said she rolled over for the first time a week ago and Diego and I watched her wiggling like a worm for a few minutes before she was finally able to roll over onto her back.

Around lunchtime, the doorbell rings. "Hi Mason!" I greet him and he grins. I spot Aerial in the car, whose engine is still running, and she's leaning against the rolled up car window with her eyes closed. "Is she feeling any better?"

Mason looks towards his wife and frowns. "Not really, but the doctor said she should be feeling better in a few days." He suddenly spins towards me. "Is Diego here? I can't believe you and Jesse haven't introduced us to your boyfriends!"

I giggle and nod. Bryan and Diego still haven't met our brothers, since Mason and Aerial have been swamped adjusting to lives as new parents and Justin and Chloe currently aren't in the country.

An excited smile spreads across Mason's face and I gesture for him to come in. Amy is lying on her tummy babbling to Diego, who is nodding and looks very invested in what Amy is saying. When he spots us, he picks up Amy and whispers, "littlest wolf, your dad is here."

As soon as Amy sees Mason she starts giggling and he takes his baby from Diego, peppering her face with kisses. "Amy, daddy and mommy missed you so much! Did you have fun with your uncles?" Amy giggles and babbles louder.

Mason's gaze shifts to Diego and he grins. "Hi, nice to meet you. Thank you for helping Chase take care of Amy."

"My pleasure and nice to meet you as well," Diego responds with a smile.

"I'm sorry it's taken so long to meet you but Chase sends us loads of photos and from what he's said you treat him well and have helped him a lot so thank you." Mason is wearing a soft smile, while Amy continues babbling, trying to recapture her father's attention.

Diego grins and rubs the back of his neck awkwardly before he replies. "I'm crazy about Chase so I was just doing what any person who loves him would do." His gaze drifts towards me and his eyes are full of love and adoration, a look I've now grown used to seeing every time Diego looks at me. "And Chase is amazing. He's the best boyfriend I could have ever hoped for." He holds out his hand and I instantly intertwine our fingers, moving to stand next to him.

"Amy, aren't they just the cutest," Mason whispers, eyes not leaving our faces.

"Ees!" Amy says, trying to copy her dad. He grins and kisses her head, causing her to giggle and repeat it.

Mason chuckles. "And I don't need to waste my time on the 'if you ever hurt Chase speech' because I know Jesse would have given you hell."

"He didn't make it easy but I completely understand his need to be protective. Chase is just too cute!" Diego replies, placing a wet kiss on my cheek.

"Ew!" I exclaim, bursting into a fit of giggles. Mason watches us with an amused but warm smile before saying that he has to go.

I walk him to the car so that I can say hi to Aerial and she greets me before shifting her exhausted body towards Amy, who Mason straps into the car seat. Just before he gets into the car he turns to me. "I'm really happy that you're happy."

"Thank you, I really am," I reply. He gives me a quizzical look, noticing that I want to ask something. "May I hug you?" I finally ask and Mason's eyes widen but he bobs his head rapidly up and down, like a bobble head doll.

My eyes momentarily shift towards Diego, who is standing in the doorway. I whispered my plan to him before following Mason out. He flashes me a smile and puts both of his thumbs up and that gives me some courage.

I hold my breath and very carefully wrap my arms around Mason. When the disgusting feeling that usually accompanies physical touch isn't there, I release my breath and a smile spreads across my face. Mason, feeling me relax, squeezes me into a tight hug.

The feeling of nausea immediately grips me, squeezing me just as tightly as Mason. My body tenses, but he doesn't seem to notice. He's too busy saying how happy he is to hug me again. My discomfort increases with each passing second and my arms fall limply behind his back.

Suddenly, there is another touch on my lower back and I instantly know it's Diego. I suck in a shaky breath, focusing on Diego's comforting touch, as my brother releases me.

"Chase! Shit! I'm so sorry!" Mason exclaims, finally noticing the distress I'm in. Tears gather at the corners of his eyes and his face floods with guilt. "Chase," he whispers and I can hear the pain in his voice.

"It's okay," I mumble, but my body betrays me by shaking like a leaf. Diego spins me around and embraces me. After a minute of Diego rubbing my back while whispering that everything will be alright, my body stills and all the discomfort leaves me. "It's okay," I say again, after turning around and stepping out of Diego's arms. This time my voice is stronger.

I reach out and gently touch Mason's arm because he looks like a lost puppy and in desperate need of reassurance. When I feel nothing other than his slightly clammy skin, I give his arm a squeeze. "I'm really okay, I just needed a minute."

Mason's eyes search mine for a moment and when I smile and nod he puts his hand over mine and squeezes. I fight the urge to jerk my hand away, and instead say, "maybe only I initiate touches for now? Just until I'm comfortable."

Mason immediately stops squeezing my hand and the uneasy feeling dissipates even though I'm still touching him. A smile spreads across his face and I give him another hug while he stands perfectly still, before I blow kisses to Amy and say goodbye to Aerial.

IMPORTANT: I'm officially marking this story as mature! I initially wasn't going to include smut scenes in this book, but I do think sex is an important part of Chase's healing, so I will include a maximum of three scenes. The first of those scenes will be in Chapter 61 which will be uploaded on Wednesday. However, I will be posting chapter 62 right after 61 so that those of you who want to skip the smut scene can do so and still have a chapter to read. You won't miss any of the plot by skipping 61 because Chase will mention it in 62.

Thank you for reading! If you enjoyed the chapter, don't forget to vote and/ or leave comments!
