Mira cracked her knuckles, her pale snowy hair flowing down her shoulders. A smirk slowly spread across her pale face, as she raised a thin silvery eyebrow.
"So you guys are dating....like for real?" Mira questioned, her eyes gleaming. Lucy gulped, unsure how to answer the all too smug devil shipper.
"Ummm...Hey Mira! Did you hear that Jellal and Erza are together now?!" Lucy deflected nervously, chewing her bottom lip.
Mira's attention diverted to the now blushing mess that was Erza, and the glaring Jellal.
"Lucy, I thought I asked you to keep that a secret!" Jellal groaned, staring at the squealing oldest Strauss with apprehension and exasperation.
Lucy laughed anxiously, her hand twirling the end of her vermillion shirt. Maybe telling everyone that she was dating Laxus was a bad idea...
She backed away slowly, somewhat amused at the whole scene.
"Jerza has sailed...oh my gosh!" Mira sang, her hands clutching her flushed cheeks.
"Welp...as fun as this has been, I think I'm gonna go..." She said shortly, with sarcasm dripping from her voice.
As she attempted to make her exit, Mira looked up with an evil smirk.
"Don't think I've forgotten about you! LaLu has come true! I'll admit, I was expecting NaLu from the start, but I gotta love this ship! It's totally adorable. Gruvia, LaLu, Jerza, GaLe...my ships give me lifeeee!" Mira gushed, wrapping her perfectly manicured nails around Lucy's shoulders in order to shake her dramatically to emphasize her point.
Lucy then saw Mira's eyes travel to Laxus. A sly smile spread over the take over mage's lips. Lucy cringed. She HAD to get out of there...
"Look! Mira, it's Jellal and Erza kissing!" Lucy exclaimed, pointing a finger at the couple, who were simply talking. Mira gasped happily, whipping her head to check.
Lucy smirked smugly. Poor Laxus...he would be here for a long time.
She flew out of the room, only flashes of gold being seen. She raced to the woods, feeling relieved.
"R.I.P. Laxus..." She mumbled, laughing to herself. Sure he was her boyfriend...but that didn't mean she'd treat him any different. They were still best friends...and she had NO shame for ditching his ass to deal with Mira.
As Lucy ran across the foliage and vegetation, she smiled. She didn't know why, but whenever her feet squished over the mud covered ground, she relished in the sound it emitted.
When she finally made it to the clearing she had in mind, she was stunned to see someone else, clearly taking her spot.
She nearly pouted but knew she could make an exception.
Afterall, she'd recognize that mess of pink hair anywhere.
Natsu was sprawled on the ground, seemingly at peace. But, she could tell from the tense, rigid setup of his shoulders that he was anything but relaxed. The twitch of his nose also alerted her to the fact that he knew she was there.
She quietly settled herself beside him, leaning her back against the rough, rugged bark of the large cherry blossom tree that she had named her spot. It was on a hill, covered with overgrown, lime green grass. A river snaked its way down beside it, and Lucy silently watched Natsu's hair stir and flutter in the breeze.
"...Why are you here...?" Natsu asked finally, cracking an eye open. She rolled her eyes at him, a small smile on her face. She pointed to the tree, which clearly, in surprisingly neat and bubbly letters spelled her name.
He chuckled quietly, sitting up slightly, leaning on his arm for support.
"Who knew you had such neat handwriting."
She appeared miffed and flipped her hair off her shoulder with a challenging grin.
"I am a writer!"
"I knew that!..."
She playfully shoved his arm, causing him to crash back onto the ground.
"Owww!"
"Oops? Sorry...?" She giggled sheepishly.
"You aren't sorry."
"Yeah, you're right, I'm not."
"But, it's the thought that counts, eh?" Lucy said with a chuckle.
A comfortable silence fell upon them, and Lucy basked in it. She had never really gotten a chance to enjoy Natsu's company. Back when they were close, it was always action-packed adventures and fun thrilling activities that filled her days. But, Natsu and she hadn't ever really done this. Sat down, just enjoyed each other's presence. She glanced over at him through the corner of her eyes. She hated to have to wreck the serene calm that settled over them like a warm blanket, but it had to be done. Something seemed to on his mind.
"So...why are you here, Natsu...?" She asked earnestly, searching his face for signs of sadness, or any emotion.
Natsu's small smile faltered, and he stared at the ground, his dark eyes boring into the earth as if they were daggers.
"Natsu...? Are you okay?"
"Scratch that, dumb question. Obviously, you're not okay..." Lucy's warm brown eyes gazed at him, concern laced in her words.
Natsu's fists clenched and he bit his lip in order to not spill everything he was feeling.
Natsu had been feeling a lot of things lately. Jealousy, anger, sadness, rejection, loneliness, and longing, All had been negative emotions and had been eating away at him.
"Natsu...please tell me..."
"Please..."
He cracked. He couldn't bear to hear the desperation in her voice. To see such kindness wasted on him. He didn't deserve her...did he? He had heard from Gray that Laxus and Lucy were dating, and he had immediately felt heartbroken and angry. But, once he had thought about it, did he deserve her? Laxus deserved her more than anyone else, and he knew for a fact that the lightning dragon slayer loved her.
That's why he had to let her go. He loved her enough, that he wanted her happiness. And if her happiness wasn't with him, then he'd accept that.
Because, he had done so much to hurt Lucy, that he couldn't even stomach the thought of being selfish and choosing his own happiness over hers.
And he hoped he wouldn't change his mind. That anger and jealousy wouldn't cloud his mind and make him do something he'd regret. But, he ended up doing that a lot, now didn't he?
