Ch23: Death Stick

Lee takes a swig of her alcohol before settling the glass bottle on her lap. She looks down beneath her dangling legs at the busy streets with its flashing lights that make the night sky much brighter. She averts her gaze to her two friends, not failing to notice the empty space Taehyung left between him and Namjoon. It makes her wrap the leather jacket around herself tighter.

"Hey, Tae," She calls and he looks at her, "Aren't you going to talk to Jimin?"

Taehyung doesn't reply for a few seconds. "I don't know."

"He didn't go to that dance competition."

"Yeah, mother told me. She was quite upset."

Lee goes silent for a minute or two, waiting for something more, but Taehyung doesn't say anything else whatsoever.

"So?" She says.

"He sent me a text this morning," Taehyung says, "Jimin. He asked me to come over because he wants to talk to me."

"Will you go?"

He shrugs. "I don't know."

"You should," Namjoon says something for the first time in a while, "You and him were close friends once, right?"

Taehyung nods.

"And you had some stupid fight about not being in contact with each other for a while."

"It was not stupid!"

Namjoon raises an eyebrow.

"Maybe a little," Taehyung mutters under his breath.

"I need to go now," He adds, looking at his watch, "Mother gets paranoid when I stay out late. Good night."

"Night," Namjoon replies and watches Taehyung leave before turning to Lee with a smile, "He's grown so much. I feel like a proud dad."

Lee smiles in response, nodding in agreement. They go silent again with nothing surrounding them but the muffled noise of the streets, the hum of wind, and the scent of Namjoon's third cigarette.

"You need to quit," Lee says, bringing the bottle up to her lips to drink again.

"I know," He replies.

"It's not easy," She notes, her eyes landing on the death stick between his fingers, "But it's worth it in the end."

"I know."

"If you know then why don't you quit?"

Namjoon grins, turning his head to look at her. "You care about my health that much?"

She scoffs. "You were the one who made me run ten laps if you ever saw me with a smoke."

"At least I admit that I care about you."

Lee nods once then looks away, and Namjoon keeps his eyes on her for a few more seconds before looking back ahead and putting the smoke between his lips to take in a breath.

Taehyung sits silently on the chair at Jimin's desk. He averts his gaze from the floor to the bed to the walls to the cast on Jimin's leg and back to the floor. He keeps his eyes anywhere but on Jimin's face.

"I didn't really think you would come," Jimin admits, leaning his back against the wall beside his bed. He keeps his casted leg stretched across the bed and the other bent under his thigh.

"I almost didn't," Taehyung says, now playing with the hem of his sleeve.

Jimin scans his friend, slowly smiling at how extravagant his clothes are still are. The Burberry scarf, the black beret, the Gucci slippers and the Cartier watch, they all fitted Taehyung perfectly as if they were a part of him. Jimin always thought they defined Taehyung somehow, as if they add to his personality. It also reminded him that no matter how different people can be (Jimin can never afford what Taehyung wears on a daily basis), they can still be the best of friends like they once were.

"Those things you said that day," Jimin says, "You didn't mean them, did you?"

Taehyung shakes his head, his eyes still fixated on the floor.

"I know," Jimin says, "I thought about it a lot, and I know you would never mean that. You were just mad at me, right? I just wanted to hear you say it."

Taehyung takes in a breath. "I'm sorry. I was being selfish. You had no idea about what happened and I am at fault, too. I never called you either or asked about you and I... I wish I had called earlier. I know you would've been there beside me if you knew. I know you would be there whenever I need you. Because you always have."

"I'm sorry, too," Jimin says, "I got caught up with a lot of things and I didn't realise you were having it hard just as I was. You were having it even harder. I'm sorry for not being there when you needed me the most."

Taehyung nods, still picking at the end of his sleeves as he holds back his tears.

"You're not crying, are you?" Jimin asks with a chuckle, "You're still a crybaby?"

"Shut up," Taehyung mumbles, wiping at the tear that managed to escape.

"I want to hug you but I'm the one with the broken leg here."

Taehyung walks up to his friend and pulls him in a hug. Jimin hugs Taehyug back, and lets him cry on his shoulder as he tightens his arms around him.

"Don't you dare wipe your snot on my shirt," Jimin says playfully.

Taehyung laughs in response, wiping his face on Jimin's shirt and making him squirm and screech in disgust while trying to push Taehyung who only holds on tighter. Jimin gives up eventually, and goes back to hugging Taehyung, nuzzling his nose in his hair.

"I missed you," Taehyung says, his voice coming out muffled as his face is pressed against Jimin's chest.

Jimin smiles, and contently shuts his eyes close. "Me too."
