Chapter Six: Paper Work
The rest of the talk went slow, nothing really coming out of it. David learned Luke's comings and goings- he was gone most weekends -he learned about their marital problems, which definitely could lead to a motive. Sadly, Marcel looked far too small to deliver the blows to the victim and he said they owned no baseball bats or much sports equipment in general. He let Marcel go with a small smile and drove them home considering they had no ride back. David went to the station after, having nothing else to do.
He works the case, looking at evidence photos from the scene. No weapon was found but from the looks of it, it had been dropped in the snow before being picked up. Too thin to be a baseball bat, a broken pipe would be more likely. The forensic teams couldn't find any fingerprints on Luke that weren't his own, and the footsteps in the alley plus the fresh snow made it impossible to track the person. One thing is for certain, David decides, the killer knew what they were doing.
David filed through other colds cases for similarities but found none, frowning. They were lost without testimony and the murder weapon, but Tyler seemed unmoveable when it came to his employees talking to the police. David calls for forensics to check the bottoms of Luke's boots and see if he had been drinking, maybe he got himself into a fight.
David looks through more pictures until his eyes are tired and it's dark outside, but he's determined to find something. A lead, a clue, anything. He could visit the club again, maybe make a rendezvous point to meet with some of the workers without Tyler knowing to get some of them to talk. That could work, but the second David steps into the club he's sure Tyler will be on his ass.
"Are you alright, sir? You seem awfully stressed." One of the cops, Brian speaks up. He walks over to David's desk, looking at the file. "It's that stripper place, right?"
David nods, lifting his glasses to rub his eyes. "Yeah, I can't find anything. The boss has it locked up tight too, so the strippers won't talk to me."
Brian whistles lowly, looking through the crime scene photos. "Tough one. You'll crack it, you got justice for that girl in the river last year, right?"
David grumbles, that case made him feel the urge to punch every racist, sexist guy out there.
Brian puts the photos down, patting David's back. "Go back to the club tomorrow, maybe they'll be looser then." Brian's face colours and he laughs. "You know what I mean."
David rolls his eyes and sighs, gathering all the papers and shoving them into the file. "Yeah, I got it. I'm gonna be heading home now, have a nice night Brian."
He stores the file away in his desk drawer and locks it, getting up and walking outside. He walks into the parking lot, startled to see something leaning against the hood of his car. David's hand slowly slides to his gun and he approaches warily, unable to see who it is in the poor light.
"Detective!" David goes slack at the voice, sighing out and rubbing his forehead. "Oh, sorry! Didn't mean to scare you."
Lui hops to his feet, smiling. But his smile doesn't reach his eyes, and his eyebrows are drawn together. David knows this look, he's seen it on hundreds of criminals. He feels sick for a second, how could such a small guy beat a man twice his size to death? Well, at least he's turning himself in.
"Sir I... I have some information for you. But, before I tell you, you gotta understand, Ohm is innocent. I swear." Lui says, ringing his hands together. Snow begins to fall and David wants to get home, so he just let's Lui spin his tale. "I know where the murder weapon is." Lui breathes, getting David's attention.
"What? Where?" David asks, stepping towards Lui. Lui's eyes widen in alarm and he puts his hands up, stepping back.
"Ohm, Ohm has this trick on stage where he spins one of those batons, r-right?" Lui squeaks, David frowns for scaring him. "Well it, it went missing last night, and was next to the body this morning. I wrapped it in plastic bags and hid it, Ohm isn't, he couldn't be the killer. He's too innocent for that."
David wants to laugh at the use of the word 'Innocent', but he cuts his loses and nods, glaring Lui down. "Well where is it? You're impeding a murder investigation, sir."
Lui swallows hard, looking down. "It's at my house, sir. But please, please don't arrest Ohm. He didn't do it, I swear."
