Chapter 31 - Can't kill you if you're already dead

Lexi POV:

"GSW. She's lost at least a pint." Maria says as we walk through the hallways of this abandoned safehouse that's proving to be not as abandoned as I had expected.

"Maybe two," Sam adds.

"And the other's been injected with a nervous stimulant." Maria finishes.

A doctor starts running toward us. " Let me take them."

"They'll want to see him first." She adds and he nods, calling out for some help.

We walk quickly down the hallway, more footsteps joining ours. "Need a hand Lex?"

I look over my shoulder as Sam transfers my weight over to Connor. "When did you get here?"

"I was kidnapped." He answers simply. "You know, the usual."

I shake my head, not able to hold back a smile as he wraps an arm around my shoulders, helping me through the building before stopping near a curtained off bed.

Hill pulls back the curtain and we're left in shock.

"About damn time," Fury says, bandaged up from what should have been his death.

"Sorry, we got a little stuck in traffic." I deadpan, not even realizing what I said. "You know how it is getting out of the city at this time."

Fury gives me an amused look before other people from who knows where come to help us. The doctor sits Natasha and I down to treat us yet Connor's hand never leaves mine.

"Lacerated spinal column, cracked sternum, shattered collarbone, perforated liver, one hell of a headache," Fury says, listing off everything that he hurt.

"Don't forget out your punctured lung," The doctor adds.

"Oh, let's not forget that." Fury remarks. "Otherwise, I'm good."

The doctor turns to me as Natasha and Steve continue to speak with Fury.

"This should counteract the stimulant in you and dull the pain," The doctor says before wiping my forearm with cleaning alcohol and sticking a needle in. I let out a contented sigh as the stinging sensation fades away. The doctor goes back to Natasha as Connor shifts his position so I can rest my head on his shoulder comfortably and listen back into the situation.

"Why all the secrecy? Why not just tell us?" Steve asks.

"Any attempt on the director's life had to look successful." Hill answers.

"Can't kill you if you're already dead." Fury adds. "Besides, I wasn't sure who to trust."

There's a moment of silence before Agent Hill speaks up. "It must have been a long day for all of you. Rest for a little while and in a couple hours we can decide what to do."

After a murmur of agreement, everyone goes their separate ways except for Fury. Because of the whole accident.....yeah, you get it.

"You want to go see the others?" Connor asks.

"Who else is here?" I ask as he leads us to a different room.

"Lexi!" Olivia exclaims before getting up and giving me a hug. Tressa looks up at me from her laptop before giving me a smile and then a groan. "Do I have to get up. Can you just get my appreciation that you are alive from over here?"

We all laugh. "I'll take it. Where's Syd and Louis?" I ask.

"They went back to camp as messengers to warn everyone about Hydra," Olivia explains.

"And they did that thing you told us to do if we were on the run," Tressa says, pausing her TV show. "Umm...left their suits with the tracking thingy at SHIELD and just wore regular demigod stuff."

"Good," I say relieved until I realize who we left behind. "Wait, guys what about Leo, Calypso, and Festus."

"Oh yeah! That's who I was supposed to warn!" Tressa says before sighing going back to her TV show.

"You're kidding right?" Olivia asks.

"Nope."

"WHAT?!"

"Guys, calm down," Connor says, suppress his laughter. "I already let Leo know."

"Oh thank the gods." I sigh, before slapping him on the chest. "Why didn't you say something sooner?!"

"Oh, I would have," He smiles. "But I was having too much fun."

"Jerk," I say, failing to hold back a laugh.

"You know you love me."

"Unfortunately," I say right as Sam walks in.

"Lexi, Connor, Cap needs you." He says before walking out of the room. Connor takes my hand and we follow him back through the safehouse until we arrive in a room with Steve, Natasha, Hill and Fury.

"This man declined the Nobel Peace Prize," Fury says, looking at a photo of Pierce. "He said, "Peace wasn't an achievement, it was a responsibility." See, it's stuff like this that gives me trust issues."

"We have to stop the launch," Natasha says.

"I don't think the Council's accepting my calls anymore." Fury says, pulling out a silver briefcase and unlocking it, revealing three computer chips.

"What are those?" I ask.

"Those are  targeting chips for the Insight helicarriers," Connor answers. "I remember seeing some of the team working on them while I was at SHIELD."

"We need to breach those carriers and replace their targeting blades with our own." Fury says.

"One or two won't cut it." Hill advises. "We need to link all three carriers for this to work, because if even one of those ships remains operational a whole lot of people are gonna die."

"We have to assume everyone aboard those carriers is HYDRA." Fury orders. "We need to get pass them, insert the server blades, and maybe, just maybe, we can salvage what's left-"

"We're not salvaging anything." Steve cuts in after being silent this entire time. "We're not just taking down the carriers, Nick, we're taking down SHIELD."

"SHIELD had nothing to do with it." Fury counters.

"You gave me this mission, this is how it ends. SHIELD's been compromised, you've said so yourself. HYDRA was right under your nose and nobody noticed."

"Why do you think we're meeting in this cave? I noticed."

"And how many paid the price before you did?" Steve counters, before meeting my eye. I look to the ground, thinking about my mom. Connor notices my change in attitude and pulls me a little closer.

"Look, I didn't know about Barnes." Fury concedes. "Or that HYDRA was responsible for Rani's death."

" Even if you have, would you have told us? Or would you have compartmentalized that too? SHIELD, HYDRA, it all goes."

"He's right," Hill says, and Fury turns, surprised.

He looks at Natasha, then to Connor and I and then to Sam who shrugs.

"Don't look at me. I do what he does, just slower."

"Well... Looks like you're giving the orders now, Captain."

"Damn right I am," Steve says before looking at all of us. "Get ready, we leave in three hours."

We nod and disperse from the room before I hear my name.

"Lexi, there's something that I need to give you," Hill says. "Connor, go and prep your Strike Team, they're going to be coming with us as well."

I nod and follow her down to a storage room, she opens a box and I gasp at the contents.

Hill smiles. "Fitz and Simmons have put a lot of effort into that for you." I pull out a blue and blac catsuit, in awe.

"What's it made of?" I ask, feeling the material in my hands.

"It's a super-absorbent bi-polymer mesh." She says. "I think. The suit can hold about 50 gallons of water on its own-"

"And with my powers, I can use that water and extra weight to my advantage." I finish.

"Exactly, the gloves are reinforced and this," She adds, pulling out what looks like a standard gun. "Is an ICER. Contains the same dendrotoxin in the Night Night gun, just a lot nicer. Strike Team Demigod has already been equipped."

"Great," I say. "So all that's left is to make three very expensive helicarriers shoot each other down and take down any HYDRA agents along the way?"

"That is the plan."

"Brillant. And here I thought we could go half a year without a situation like this."

"Good luck with that."

This was a really bad filler chapter and really late, I know. I've been hitting a writers block a lot recently for this book and now that school's started, it's been taking me longer to update than normal. Sorry about that.

But if you liked this part be sure to leave a vote, comment and follow me if you haven't already.

Sorry again guys.
