Chapter 29 - Uhh...I know who the hell Bucky is??? But I don't think that helps

******Three hours later*******

"You guys are sure he's coming out this exit," I say out loud, knowing that Steve, Natasha, and Sam are listening through our comms.

"Yes, we are. Now stay alert," Steve responds. "I have the laser pointer so-"

"Wait, why do you have the laser pointer? Give it to me." Natasha says.

"What? Why?"

"You're the one giving orders. Besides, do you even know how to use one?"

"Of course, I do! I'm not that old!"

"Seriously Steve, we don't want to blind anyone."

Sam shakes his head next to me as I take a sip of my drink. "Is it always like this with them?"

I shrug, adjusting my aviators. "More or less. It's worse when Tony gets involved. Sam make the call."

"What?" He says.

"I've got eyes on Sitwell. Steve, Natasha FIGURE YOURSELVES OUT," I say.

"Yes ma'am."

"I'm not calling you ma'am."

I don't have the chance to answer since Sam has put the phone on speaker.

"Yes, sir?" Sitwell says into the phone.

"Agent Sitwell, how was lunch?" Sam asks. "I hear the crab cakes here are delicious."

"To be honest, though, crab cakes aren't really my thing," I add.

"Who is this?" Sitwell asked, alert and obviously confused.

"The good looking guy and girl with the sunglasses, your ten o'clock," Sam says.

And Sitwell looks in the opposite direction.

I facepalm and Sam holds in a laugh. "Your other ten o'clock."

Sitwell turns toward us and Sam raises his glass at him while I give him a small wave. "There you go."

"What do you two want?" He asks.

"Well," I say. "We want you to go around the corner, to your right. There's a gray car, two spaces down."

"The three of us are gonna take a ride," Sam adds.

"And why would I do that?" Sitwell smugly says and I sigh.

"Because that tie looks really expensive," Sam says. "And we'd hate to mess it up."

Sam and I head to car and when we see Sitwell, we get him in the car and start driving, making sure the back doors are locked.

"Guys we got the package, heading to you now," I say into my comm. "If that wasn't already obvious."

"Where are you two taking me?!" Sitwell asks. "I demand-"

"You don't get to demand anything Sitwell." I say from my seat in the front before looking at Sam. "I told you we should have gagged him."

"Aren't we supposed to be above gagging our prisoners?"

"Fine, can I freeze his mouth shut?"

"I would have no problem with that." Sam replies, and I turn around, about to form some ice.

"Okay! Okay! I'll shut up now." He says and I sigh. "Better keep to that promise."

Sam pulls over at a building and I bring Sitwell up the building's stairwell until I meet Steve who grabs him and throws him out onto the roof. We start walking toward Sitwell who repeatedly tries to back up. Eventually this guy's gonna run out of roof.

"Tell me about Zola's algorithm." Steve demands.

"Never heard of it," Sitwell responds.

"What were you doing on the Lemurian Star?"

"I was throwing up. I get seasick. Not like Carson would know how that feels." He says and I roll my eyes.

Then Sitwell runs out of roof and just as he nearly falls off the edge, Steve grabs his collar.

"Is this little display meant to insinuate that you can throw me off the roof?" Sitwell mocks. "Cause it's really not your style, Rogers."

"You're right," Steve says, flattening out Sitwell's suit. "It's not. It's theirs."

Steve steps aside as Sitwell miraculously slips on ice and Natasha kicks him off the roof.

"Oh, wait. What about that girl from accounting, Laura...?" Natasha recalls.

"Lillian. Lip piercing, right?" Steve asks.

"Yeah, she's cute."

"Yeah, I'm not ready for that."

"Am I the only person who hasn't met this girl?" I ask as Sam flies over head and drops Sitwell on the roof before landing and folding up his wings.

"We gonna have to ask again?" I ask Sitwell who desperatly catches his breath.

"Zola's algorithm is a program...for choosing Insight's targets!" Sitwell concedes.

"What targets?" Steve asks.

"You three! You! A TV anchor in Cairo, the Undersecretary of Defense, a high school valedictorian in Iowa city. Bruce Banner, Stephen Strange, some camps in Long Island and California, anyone who's a threat to HYDRA! Now, or in the future."

"The future?" I ask. "How could it predict what people will do?"

Sitwell laughs. "How could it not? The 21st century is a digital book. Zola taught HYDRA how to read it."

We look at each other apprehensively, knowing where this is going.

"Your bank records, medical histories, voting patterns, e-mails, phone calls, your damn SAT scores. Zola's algorithm evaluates peoples' past to predict their future." Sitwell says.

"And what then?" Steve asks.

"Oh, my God. Pierce is gonna kill me."

"Answer him!" I yell.

"Then the Insight Helicarriers scratch people off the list. A few million at a time."

"Oh, my gods." I breathe out and Sitwell laughs.

"Why so surprised Alexis? Didn't your boyfriend tell you anything about what he was working on?"

"Shut your face before I freeze it shut."

"I told you earlier, I wouldn't mind that." Sam adds.

"Sam!" Steve scolds.

**Time Skip brought to you by a certain one-armed soldier arming himself**

(A/n: I'm horrible I know XD)

"HYDRA doesn't like leaks," Sitwell says beside me.

"Yeah? So why don't you try sticking a cork in it." Sam says from the driver's seat.

"Insight's launching in sixteen hours, we're cutting it a little bit close here," Natasha remarks from my other side.

Yup, I got the middle seat. Worst. Decision. Ever.

"I know. We'll use him to bypass the DNA scans and access the Helicarriers directly," Steve says.

"What?! Are you crazy? That is a terrible, terrible idea-" Sitwell says before a metal hand grabs him and launches across the freeway to his imminent death.

Natasha and I look at each other with wide eyes as Winter crawls over the roof of the car.We bolt as fast as we can to the front seats of the car and I pull Sam's head down as Nat pulls Steve's to avoid the gunshots into each seat. I roll over into the middle part of the car between the driver's and shotgun seat and brace myself so I don't fall.

Steve shifts the gear and breaks, sending Winter flying off the roof and skidding on the road, his metal arm creating sparks on the road as he slows to a stop.

All we needed now was some epic battle music and we'd have a movie. As if.

Winter gets up and slowly, and starts walking towards us. I can see Natasha pull her gun out and right as she's about to shoot, we get rear-ended. Hard. It takes all my strength and some help from Sam to make sure I don't slam headfirst into his radio.

Then Winter jumps, latching a hand onto the roof and taking out the back window with his feet. I hear gunshots and assume they're from Natasha before the freaking metal hand sticks itself through the windshield and rips out the steering wheel.

"SHIT!" Sam yells as he's no longer in control of the car......or anything at this point.

Natasha continues to shoot at him until he jumps off our car and onto the jeep. The jeep rams into us again and this time, its enough to send the car into a tumble. Right before the car can flip, Steve yells "HANG ON!" and he knocks out the side door, taking all of us with him as the car we were in no less that a second ago, spins on its side in front of us.

Sam looses grip on us and ends up rolling off onto the highway and the jeep overtakes our slide and drives ahead and I realize this encounter can either end two ways. Escape or capture.

And what's the first thing that runs through my head?

Food.

Yeah, leave it to me to think about food in a life or death situation.

All of a sudden the three of us are standing there and Winter decides it's a brilliant idea to aim a rocket launcher at our direction.

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Like my day couldn't get any worse.

Steve pushes me and Natasha out of the way and he takes the brunt of the hit with his shield, sending him flying over the bridge and out of my field of vision below.

"Oww," I wince as I hear him land. "That's gonna leave a mark."

"Go help Sam, I'll distract the big guy," Natasha says and I nod. On her mark, I sprint over to the area where I last saw Sam, narrowly avoiding cars as they try to race away from the scene unfolding.

Just as I see one of the Hydra agents aim at Sam, I kick the agent hard behind the knee and elbow him on the side of the head, knocking him unconscious.

I grab his gun and a grenade and slide down next to Sam behind a car.

"Thanks for the save," Sam says.

"Well, friends watch each other's back right?" I smile, looking for incoming fire. I hand Sam the gun and get ready to throw the grenade.

"Is that what we are?" Sam asks, laughing and taking aim.

"Yes we are, now get ready," I say, pulling the pin on the grenade and throwing it towards the remaining Hydra agents on the bridge as Sam starts firing. I will out my quiver and bow to give him some support.

"Go, we got this!" Sam yells down and someone below the bridge, I'm assuming Steve at this point but I really don't know.

I shoot down a couple agents with electrocuting arrows before the two of us hear a...........very loud gong.

Yeah, I don't really know how else to explain that........you had to be there.

I look over my shoulder at the source of the noise and see Steve and Winter brawling it out....and Natasha bleeding out.

"Crap, Sam go get your wings from the car."

"What?" He asks before looking down at the scene below us. "Yeah, give me like three minutes."

"You have two," I respond before stealing one of the fallen Hydra agent's grappling hooks and sliding down onto the street below. I send an ice spire that Winter  manages to evade to cover my run over to Natasha.

I will a glob of water to condense and crouch next to her, cleaning the wound and preventing it from getting infected and pulling out the bullet at the same time.

"Lexi," she says weakly.

"Yeah?" I say, freezing the wound shut with the water.

"The grenade launcher," she asks for and I hand it to her before looking back at Steve and Winter.....who lost his mask in the fight I'm assuming.

And when I glance at the soldier's face for the first time, my breath catchs in my throat and my hand flies up to my mouth in shock.

I recognize him.

The man who killed my mother is Bucky Barnes.

And even though the scene is noisy with the sound of civillians running and screaming, I can hear his voice clear as day.

"Who the hell is Bucky?"

This just got complicated.
