Chapter 21 - Netflix and.....yeah, that's really about it

Several hours later

Lexi POV:

"Going to rant on Fury?" I ask Steve as we take the elevator up to Fury's office, still in our tactical/combat uniforms.

"More or less," Steve replies.

"I figured, I just wanted to make sure, you know before all Hades breaks loose," I say, looking out the glass windows to the Potomac river. If I look closely enough, I can see the Naiads in the water. But it's difficult, with the Mist blurring their image.

"Steve, can you see them?" I ask, without actually thinking.

"See who?" He asks, his head turning in my direction.

"The Naiads, in the river," I say, waving as one of them somehow notice me.

"Lexi, I don't see anything," Steve says, confused at who I'm waving to.

"Look harder and believe that it's possible," I say looking up at him.

"Lexi, I still don't......." He says, before trailing off, his mouth dropping in awe and he meagerly waves to them. "Wow."

"Yeah, well, don't encourage them. Naiads are horrible flirts. Learned that from a friend." I smile, thinking about Annabeth and Percy.

"Hey Steve, do you still want me to go with you to-"

"Not if you don't want to Lexi. You've already done a lot with just finding her. But if you do want to come, I won't mind the company," Steve replies, the corners of his mouth threatening to twitch into a growing smile. "And let's just say you are starting to grow on me."

"Thanks, Steve," I smile back. "You aren't too bad yourself."

Steve is about to respond when the elevator slides open, and Steve stalks out, rapidly switching back to his full "Avenge for Freedom" mode.

"You just can't stop yourself from lying, can you?" Steve questions.

"I didn't lie. Agent Romanoff had a different mission than yours." Fury responds.

"Which you didn't feel obliged to share," Steve says.

"I'm not obliged to do anything." Fury says.

"Those hostages could've died, Nick." Steve counters.

"I sent the greatest soldier in history and two of my best agents to make sure that didn't happen." Fury replies before turning to me. "Speaking of which, what are you even doing here Carson."

"Moral support, nothing better to do...the usual," I respond.

"Well you're needed on the roof, we got a couple new recruits that are heading in that need briefing."

"Will I be done by this afternoon?" I ask.

"Depends on how fast you get moving," he responds, an eyebrow rising.

"Yup, I got it," I reply. "I'll head up there, see you back at the apartments Steve."

I walk out the door to the elevator and jab my finger at the up button. Multiple times. And rapidly. With much force until the door opens. I can literally imagine someone's voice saying "press it gently."

I roll my eyes at myself and step in. "Rooftop Helipad," I tell the elevator and the door shuts.

Then there's just silence. That comfortable silence I normally get at night, when it's just me in the apartment staring out the window. That's always been a habit of mine, ever since I was little. Just sitting on the windowsill to enjoy the view.

The chime of the elevator takes me from my thought and I walk out, enjoying the sunlight and also getting blinded by it.

My life.

But that's when I see the helicopter with the surrounding swarm of agents. One of them being Rumlow.....

Ugh........WHY ARE THE FATES SO RUDE!

I walk over to help unload when the guy notices me and sets his jaw.

Yeah, buddy, the feeling's mutual.

"Who the hell sent you up here?" He asks.

"Fury. He said you guys needed-" I start

"We don't need any help. At least, not from a hormonal teenage girl who only relies on my powers for success." He sneers.

"Well, at least this hormonal teenage girl doesn't need her powers to kick you off the roof." I snap back, my eyes narrowing. "And I was going to say someone to brief the agents coming in. What the heck is your problem?"

"You're sixteen years old and working for SHIELD like everyone else," He spits. "You rely too much on those damn powers of yours. You're unprofessional, sloppy and are inefficient. Want me to go on?"

"I'm sorry I'm not perfect and wasn't born ten years before I was? I'm a person, not a weapon, so stop treating me like one." I say. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have some agents to brief."

I stalk away from him and the other agents, before unlatching the copter door and putting up a smile. "Welcome to the Triskelion...CONNOR!" I squeal.

He laughs and jumps down hugging me tight. "You miss me?" He says pulling away.

"Dang right I did!" I say, hitting his chest. "Why didn't you tell me you were coming?!"

"What? And ruin the surprise? Nah, I don't think so." He smiles, slinging an arm around me. "I'm honestly surprised that Fury agreed to send you up here."

"Really? That's why I came up here?" I laugh.

"Hey, lovebirds!" Rumlow yells. "Get productive or get out."

I roll my eyes and grab Connors hand, and his duffle bag, hauling it over my shoulder.

"Well you made it clear you don't want any of my help, so I will be going." I snap at Rumlow and walk back to the elevators, Connor still in tow.

I jab my finger at the elevator button again and it opens and I step in. "Garage," I tell the elevator and let out an angry sigh. The doors slide shut and the elevator descends in the incredibly tense moment.

"Um....do you mind telling me what in the name of Hades just  happened there?" Connor asks, his eyebrows arched up in confusion.

"Let's just say Agent Rumlow isn't exactly happy that a short, sixteen-year-old girl with powers has the same authority has him."

"Well, technically you might have more authority than him." Connor points out. I give him a look and hand him back his duffle. "And don't care about what Rumlow says about you. You worked so hard to get here Lexi," He says, engulfing me in a hug. "He can think what he wants. But don't let anyone change what you think."

I smile. "Thanks, babe."

"Anytime Lexi," He says back, kissing the top of my head. The elevator doors ding open and we walk out hand in hand. I climb on my motorcycle and Connor gets on his.

"Follow me if you can keep up," I smirk before taking off out of the garage. I hear a revving engine so I know he's right behind me. I drive past SHIELD and the monuments until I get toward the residential side of town and pull up next to our more secluded apartment complex.

"This is nice," Connor says, looking around at the area.

"It is isn't it! Just wait until you get inside!" I laugh.

I lead Connor upstairs and nearly bump into one of our neighbors, Sharon who's undercover from Fury's orders.

Yeah, he actually told me about that. I know, I was surprised too.

"Oh my goodness, sorry Sharon," I say.

"Don't worry about it," She says smiling before walking.

"Who's that?" Connor asks.

"That's Sharon, the nurse that lives across from Steve over there," I say pointing to Steve's apartment. "She's really nice and works down at the hospital we passed on the way here."

I pull out my key and unlock the apartment. "Welcome to our place!"

"What do you think?"  I ask him.

"It's amazing," Connor says, impressed. "I love it, but not as much as I love you," He finishes, hugging me and kissing my cheek.

"Gods, we're so cheesy," I smile. "I love you too. So, we've got three hours to kill before you have to go back to the Triskelion and I have to go volunteer."  I tell him. "What do you want to do?"

"You volunteer? Where?" Connor asks.

"That nursing home we passed on the way here," I respond, walking to the kitchen and pulling out a bottle of ICE. "You know? The one that is home to Peggy Carter? I've been volunteering there for her on extracurricular work for SHIELD that I need so I can be a supervising officer. Today I'm finally bringing Steve to see her."

"Yeah, I didn't know that." Connor shrugs. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"Didn't come up in conversation." I shrug. "So what do you want to do?"

"Did we start that one TV show you wanted to watch with me?" Connor asks.

I think back a couple weeks. "Um....which one?"

"The one that Tressa was obsessing about," Connor responds.

"Umm...you're gonna have to be a little more specific than that," I say. "Us fangirls obsess over a lot of things."

"I think it was The Flash?" Connor responds and I instantly brighten up.

"Let's do it!" I say and he smiles. We settle on the couch together and he pulls up Netflix and starts the series.

*******Three hours later******

knock, knock, knock

"And that would be our cue," I say, pausing the episode. I turn next to me and smirk as Connor sleeps on my shoulder.

I carefully slip out of his grasp and put his head under a pillow. I place a blanket over him and grab my things before answering the door.

"You ready to go super-soldier?" I ask.

"Yeah, its about time isn't it? Does she know?" Steve asks.

"Nah, I thought it would be a nice surprise for Peggy," I respond.

"Then let's get to it."
