|Ch.14| Soft Skin

(Song: Nightcore - The Perfect Two)

Rays of sunlight peek through my curtains, gently touching the skin of my arm. I open my eyes at the sudden warmth, lifting my hand to my face and wiping a thin stream of drool from the corner of my lips. A quiet yawn escapes my mouth.

Standing up, I trudge into the bathroom. My toothbrush, toothpaste, and hairbrush are all arranged neatly, a mark of my father's presence. I pick up the toothbrush and push a small bead of toothpaste onto the bristles. Sticking it under the faucet, I wet the bristles slightly and begin to brush away my morning breath.

After about a minute, I spit out the mint-tasting foam and rinse off my toothbrush. Moving to the subject of the bird's nest that is my hair, I pick up my hairbrush and drag it through, wincing as it hits the knots and tangles. I stretch my arms and walk back into my bedroom, grabbing my freshly washed uniform from the surface of my dresser.

I dress myself in the over blouse and skirt before pulling on my black stockings and adorning a hair clip to keep any stray hairs away from my face. Respectable enough, I reason silently, making sure everything is buttoned and no wrinkles are present.

I turn on my heel and walk out into the living room. My father presents me with a plate of toast. "Sorry I couldn't make anything too special, honey... My first day on the job is today. By the way... Would you be alright with walking to and from school today? I know it's a bit far, but I won't be home until after school. To wait for me would have you at U.A. until at least eight 'o clock,"

I take the plate of toast and nod, smiling brightly. "Yep! I'm fine with it! Besides, Bakugou walks to and from school, so maybe I could join him!" I take a bite of toast.

"Thanks, honey."

"You're welcome, Dad!" I say through a mouthful of crumbs.

I start out the door with a skip in my step, my tail swaying to and fro. I'll head to Bakugou's first and join his walk! I'm sure he won't mind, he never does.

Why am I always so cheerful around him anyways? I was shy back in America...

Before I even reach his house, I see the blonde walking across the way. He walks in a slouchy manner, hands casually shoved in the pockets of his uniform pants. Directing his eyes downwards, he seemingly watches his own feet move across the sidewalk.

He looks as he normally does. Ash-blonde hair, perfectly tanned skin, red eyes, muscular arms. Today, though, his face looks so calm, as if he's content with where he is. I've never seen him that way before...

I begin matching my speed with his, moving towards him with a warm feeling in my cheeks. "Hey, Blondie," I smile, looking up at him. He looks surprised for a moment as he stares down at me, before his face settles into a regular look of faux annoyance.

"The fuck're you doing here?" He asks, quirking a blonde eyebrow.

"My dad starts his job today. I'll be walking from now on. I figured I'd tag along with you, 'cause you seem to know what you're doing," I shrug, holding on to the straps of my F/C book bag.

"Tch, of course I do," He rolls his eyes. "Been memorizing the way since I wanted to go to U.A."

"Great! Then you can show me the way there," I direct my eyes ahead of me again. A peaceful silence drapes around Bakugou and I as we walk, listening to the world wake up. The chirp of small birds, the rustling of leaves, the distant bit of chatter from a passing couple.

I chance a look at Bakugou, who looks up and ahead at the horizon with faint fascination. The red-orange light from the slowly rising sun paints over his skin with shimmering beauty, igniting his features with radiant colours. The feeling of butterflies surrounds my head, making me feel light and floaty. A warm, cherishable feeling snuggles itself against my heart like a sleeping kitten; And just like a sleeping kitten, I don't want to move my eyes for fear that it will go away and leave my heart cold.

Bakugou, for a while, doesn't notice me looking at him. He just walks peacefully, eyes straightforward and calm.

Eventually he looks down at me, meeting my gaze with his own. Neither of us look away. His sparkling red orbs hold mine in a gentle embrace, deep pools of crimson warmth pouring into my very soul. He simply stares, not looking away, not even blinking.

A small tug pulls my lips into a slight smile. Words don't feel needed. Looking away doesn't seem like an option, though as soon as Bakugou's cheeks flush a soft red, he looks away to hide it. I giggle quietly and take my gaze back to the horizon. My tail sways back and forth with the rhythm of my walk.

A pulling urge to move my hand decides my next moves before I can coherently process them. My arm sways towards Bakugou's as I realize what's happening, it already being too late to stop the turn of events.

My hand brushes Bakugou's wrist and tenderly pulls his hand out of his pocket. My slender fingers intertwine with his, our palms locking together in a simple, meaningful hand-hold. Bakugou flinches slightly at the warmth of our hands touching, but doesn't leave my grasp. We lock eyes again, a new sense between us. While he stares, my mind worries and my heart sinks slightly.

Oh shit, I shouldn't have done that... He doesn't like this kind of stuff and I know it, why did I have to go and hold his hand?! I screwed up, he hates this...

His fingers gently wrap around mine, his soft skin brushing my own. My heart leaps slightly, fluttering in my chest.

Wait... He...

...He likes it...

We both look forwards again, our hands intertwined blissfully as we walk.

"Don't get used to it, and don't go tellin anyone," He mumbles, looking away slightly.

"Understood, Blondie." I smile, enjoying his presence.
