What happens when you're so high up............

[Virgil's POV]

We arrived back at the apartment. I untangled my arms from around Roman's waist and climbed off the bike. I removed the helmet and turned to Roman.

'Woah! That was awesome!' I pointed at the bike as he turned it off.

'I know right! Now let's go inside. I believe I have another part of a deal to hold up.'

'You better sing along with me!' I said, running up to his floor.

'Wait up!' He chased after me.

I threw open the door, walking in like I owned the place.

'NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS TIME BITCHES!'

'I'll get the cookies!'

'I got blankets!'

'POPCORN!'

'Yes! Move, peasants, move!' I clapped my hands as I walked to the living room and turned on the TV, setting up the cinematic masterpiece.

One by one my friends came and added something to the sofa.

Patton sat to my left with cookies.

Roman to my right with blankets.

Logan on his armchair with sour candy.

Janus infront of me on the floor with popcorn.

Remus beside him with.....deodorant.

I clicked "play" and the movie began.

'Boys and girls of every age

Wouldn't you like to see something strange?' Played through the speakers.

'Oh best song!' Patton squealed.

'No way! It's totally "Kidnap The Sandy Claus"!' Remus shook his head at Janus' idea.

'Ha! As if! It's so "Town Meeting Song" all of it is just....perfect!'

'I hate to ruin your fun. But there's only one true winner.' I said.

'The Oogie Boogie Man Song.' Roman, Logan and I all simultaneously declared the winner.

'Oh sssssssssshit!' Janus threw some popcorn in his mouth

'You're so right....' Remus scowled.

'Diddly darn.' Patton slapped his knee, 'That's a real good one.'

The movie carried

"WELL, WELL, WELL, WHAT HAVE WE HERE?'

'SANTA CLAUS, HUH?'

'OOOOOOH! I'M REALLY SCARED!'

'SO YOU'RE THE ONE EVERYONE'S TALKIN' ABOUT?'

'YOU'RE JOKING!'

'YOU'RE JOKING!'

'I CAN'T BELIEVE MY EYES!'

YOU'RE JOKIN' ME!'

'YOU GOTTA BE!'

'THIS CAN'T BE THE RIGHT GUY!' Everyone pointed at each other, causing a ripple of laughter.

'Yeah, this is the best song.'

It carried on for a while and it turned into a duet between me and Roman, myself as the infamous

'Well what are you going to do?' Roman asked, dramatically moving.

'Well, I'm going to do the very best I can!'

The rest of the movie went by quickly. We sat debating about the romance between Sally and Jack.

'It's unrealistic.' Logan sighed.

'No it's not! The way they act around each other is obviously love.' Patton held his hands to his heart.

'I disagree.' Roman sighed. 'I'm all for a good love story, but this ain't it.'

'Right? Like, it's not even supposed to be a romance, it's a halloween-christmas cross over.' I added.

'But they're a cute messed-up pair.' Remus pointed out.

'He doesn't listen to a word she says!' Janus threw up his arms.

We debated for a little while longer. Then we decided to turn on a different film.

'UNDER THE SEA! UNDER THE SEA! EVERYTHING'S BETTER DOWN WHERE IT'S WETTER UNDER THE SEA!' Remus yelled with Janus.

'WE GET IT!' They kept singing though louder and louder. Eventually, we were all belting out lyrics to 'Kiss the girl'. Remus brought out some wine at one point and all of us had a glass.

Patton and Janus eventually fell asleep and Logan and Remus carried them back to their respective rooms.

Roman and I slid onto the floor as we watched the last scene. It finished and we turned off the TV.

'Ah. Just like when we met. Sat on the floor drinking.'

'We've grown since then.' I said, pouring myself some more wine.

'Have we?'

'Becoming a philosophical drinker?' I laughed.

'No, I mean...think about it. What's changed? I mean we've grown closer but.....'

'There was that one thing.....' I whispered while taking another sip.

'Which we should probably talk about.' He gulped the rest of his glass.

'Do we have to?'

'I mean, kinda?'

'Kinda?'

'Yes.'

'What is there to say?'

'Do we like each other?'

'Do you want us too?'

'Do you always have to answer with a question?'

I shrugged, today was not the day I planned to confess. That was much too far into the future. Basically never.

'Do you regret it then?'

'I......' What was I supposed to say? I caught a glimpse of the pained expression on his face. Was my hesitation scaring him? A moment passed. And another, I couldn't look him in the eye. He took that for an answer.

'Okay.' He stood up and walked over to the front door.

'Wait, Ro.' I got up and followed him, not noticing the lack of motorcycle keys.

'It doesn't matter Virgil, go back upstairs. I'm gonna take a walk.'

'You're going to get soaked, come back.' I followed him down the stairs as he kept trying to send me back upstairs.

'I have my jacket, please, just leave me alone. I need to think,'

'No.' He slipped his arms through the sleeves of the red letterman jacket.

We stepped outside in the pouring rain. I could barely see five feet in front of me.

'Roman!' I yelled over the rain.

'Please Virgil, go back inside! You don't have to pretend anymore.' A damaged smile crossed his face. He walked out of the small sheltered bit in the front of the building.

I couldn't see him but I heard the clatter of keys.

'Roman stop being stupid, come inside! What are you doing?'

'I'll be back soon. Go spend time with the others, I'll be back before you know it.'

'Roman, don't go out in this weather, it's fucking dangerous!'

'I'll be okay! I just need to clear my head.' He started the bike and kicked up the stand. I rushed to the side of the bike and grabbed his shoulder.

'Roman, you're being irrational. You're going to get hurt.'

His voice was low, his pain and desperation seeping through, 'Let go of me, Virgil. Please.'

I let go of his shoulder, shocked from the tone I hadn't heard before.

He darted off on the bike before I could even notice what he'd done.

'No please! Wait! Ro!' I reached out to where he was but all that was left in his spot was his crushed heart and my silent tears.

...............the only way to go is down.
