13 ~ into the fire

The motorbike shop reeked of oil and grease. The brick walls were stained, whether with spilled drinks or vomit, Harumi didn't know. Shady looking people with sharp eyes and spike-studded jackets worked on motorcycles in the open garage, sloshing gasoline at each other when the work didn't go fast enough.

Harumi stopped in front of the garage, holding her head high as the several employees began to notice her presence.

"I need to see your leader," she said calmly.

The nearest worker, a tall man with wild, white hair, began to advance on her. "The GM's out," he said in a thick downtown accent. "Not seein' nobody atta moment."

     "It's about the Ninja."

The man froze, and a figure hidden in the back of the garage stepped forward. Her ponytail swung with each sashayed step, and she straightened her spike-studded jacket as she prowled forward.

"I had a feeling you'd come to uss," said Violet.

And then Harumi was led into the shop.

The shop itself was smaller than the building let on, but that was due to one of the walls leading to a secret passage into Ninjago City's abandoned subway system. Harumi kept her head high as she followed Violet down the moldy-bricked paths, yet her hands slinked into the jacket's pockets, as if the jacket could comfort her like Kai himself.

Harumi gritted her teeth at the thought, pushing it away. Kai Mayason was one of the Ninja. The Ninja killed her parents. Anything she might have felt for him before had to go. She'd rather the Ninja be brought to justice than her hormones be satisfied.

Bright graffiti littered the walls, and the flickering lights cast Violet in an insane aura. Each one of Violet's steps was out of place, as if she couldn't find a pattern to mold herself to. However, even in the chaos there was an eerie edge to each of her steps. It was almost as if Violet expected to be attacked.

Harumi was brought into a room that was wide and tall. Two stories, to be exact. Violet locked the door behind her, smirking when Harumi looked back in alarm. Up on the second stories, through a thin set of rails, two figures stepped forward to get a good look at their newest victim.

The first was so massive he had to hunch down to fit within one floor. The other was shorter, but silent and still, like unmoving stone.

"Who is this?" said the massive one.

"A guesst, Killow," Violet replied, her high-pitched voice fading slightly to a hiss. "She knowss how to find the Ninja."

Both figures raised their eyebrows. Well, Harumi assumed the shorter one did. He was wearing a helmet, so she couldn't tell.

"I know how to bring the Ninja to you." Harumi fought to keep her voice even, "However, it comes with a price."

"Go on," said the massive one.

"I'm working for Ro—Morro. Morro Wiggins. I want the same deal he had. Five hundred thousand dollars if I bring them to you."

"It doesn't work that way, ssunshine," Violet leered from behind her. "We determine the sstakes, not you. And your little friend failed."

"We'll give you two hundred thousand," the massive figure—Killow—said after consulting with the shorter one.

"Four hundred thousand," Harumi challenged, "and Ro gets his job back for double the pay."

Violet laughed from her corner, but Harumi didn't budge.

"Two hundred fifty thousand," countered Killow, "and we'll kill that little runt so you don't have to deal with him anymore."

"If I wanted him dead, I'd do it myself," Harumi hissed.

"Oooh, we've got a feisty one here, eh?" Violet cut in.

"How's this?" the Killow leaned close to the railings. Close enough for Harumi to make out his scratchy beard and face tattoos. "You bring the Ninja to us in the next twenty-four hours, and we give you two hundred thousand. You don't bring the Ninja to us in twenty-four hours, and we kill both you and your little Morro. You'll agree to this deal, or I'll have Violet kill you now."

A blade kissed the skin of Harumi's neck, but she was already swerving, bringing her elbow down hard on Violet's forearm and kneeing her in the hip. The woman buckled, her knife clanging against the cold floor, but by the time she pulled another dagger from her jacket, Harumi had retrieved the first one. The rusty blade pressed against Violet's neck, causing blood to bubble from her grey skin.

Both Harumi and Violet stood, panting, glaring straight into each other's eyes.

     Then... applause.

A slow, methodic clap from above, where both the gang leaders were watching.

     "Twenty-four hours," said Killow.

"H-how about now?" Harumi said warily, stepping back from the violent woman. "Give me access to the internet and I guarantee one will drop right into your hands now. Consider it... a sign of trust."

Violet's eyes glinted, and she handed Harumi a phone.

It took less than a minute for a blue-clad figure to drop through the roof, splashing debris all over the floor. His hands moved to stop Harumi from releasing his name, but he wasn't quick enough. The blue ninja was knocked to the floor by the Killow (who had made his way downstairs), and Violet removed the ninja's mask quickly.

"Can't bite down on your poison now, can you?" Killow laughed throatily. An auburn-haired boy struggled from beneath Killow's grip, but more gang members were flooding into the room, advancing on the boy in hordes. They tore his ninja gi off of him and crushed any hidden weapons they found. It was a blur of bodies and movement. Harumi remembered locking eyes with the blue ninja, if only for a second.

He was young, probably twenty-three at most. His freckle-laden face was scarred, scrunched with fear as he looked from her to the phone. Harumi dropped the phone and smashed it beneath her feet. No, she wouldn't release Jay Gordon-Walker's name yet. That pleasure would come after all the Ninja were dead.

Harumi didn't need anyone to show her out of the gang's shop.

She stepped out onto the docks, a strange weight being lifted from her chest.

Yes, she could finally have her revenge.

But her heart was telling her it would come at a terrible, terrible price.
