It's finally Summer. No school, no homework, no loud ass classmates that are always bragging about their perfect grades. All you want, or need, is your bed and the AC turned all the way up. That has always been your plan each Summer....until you met this one boy last year when senior year started.
You weren't really excited about prom or graduation but being the last year of high school, he made you look forward to it. Not even college was in your future plans but now you've sent more than five applications to five different universities.
Luckily you got in. 3/5 of the schools.
Minho, you'd say, is very intelligent. He got into one of the top schools, which are hard to get into. But for him it's like riding a bicycle.
You, like every Saturday afternoon, are laying down on your bed while feeling the cold air from the AC fill your entire room. Your boyfriend is somewhere in the kitchen looking for something to eat. He usually brings you a snack which is sweet but it's always at the wrong time...when you're not hungry.
"Babe, you're out of ice", he said, walking towards your bed before resting his body next to yours.
"I know because all you like to drink here is ice coffee. Too much coffee is bad for you", you say, poking his stomach. Might you add, hard rock abs.
"Says the one who smokes almost everyday", he pointed out, not loving the fact that you smoke about 3-5 cigarettes a day, if not maybe like once a day.
"Hey, I'm trying to quit. It's hard", you said.
"I know. But last time you hid a packet from me and I have strongly voiced my opinion in you smoking. It worries me", he said.
You hear that almost every week. When he sees someone smoking, a commercial about being addicted to smoking, when you go out to the liquor store and sees you eyeing the packet of cigarettes behind the counter. You love him but it can get quite annoying.
"Can you believe we're gonna be college students in two months? It's gonna be so crazy. We're adults now, it's so weird", you said.
His hand slid down to intertwine with yours and kissed the back of it.
"Hopefully our schedules won't interfere with our time being together", you turned to your side and faced him.
"Let's not worry about that now. It's summer. We should be going out and having fun before our lives become crammed with studying, homework and tests. Come on, Seungmin is having a party later tonight. We should go", he said.
"Who's going?", you asked, rolling onto your back and started picking at your nails. Only reason why is because you already know who's gonna be there which is why you usually never go to the parties that his friends have.
"The guys", he answered. He knows what you want him to say. But he's avoiding it.
"And?", you waited for him to continue. He doesn't want to.
"And other people who don't matter", he said.
"Arie? Is she gonna be there?", you finally ask.
"She's always there, you know that. I don't see why it matters when I don't even speak to her. I thought we already went through this. We argued. I don't want that to ruin our summer together", he said.
Sighing, you agreed and apologized. But who wouldn't feel at least a bit insecure when their significant other's ex is always around?
"I guess I should start getting ready then", you were about to hop off the bed when Minho grabbed your hand, pulled you back, and placed his lips on yours.
It was a small kiss. But it's the one you never expect that you love so much.
"Damn. Now I wanna stay here with you", you wrapped your arms around him and wanted to kiss him back but he sat up and hovered over you.
"The party is in a few hours. You have time. But I...have to go home and take care of a few things with my mom. Apparently I'm supposed to babysit but then she said maybe. So I have to confirm if I'm really babysitting or not", he said, kissing your cheek before standing up.
"So you're not really sure if you're going to the party? What was the point of telling me then?", you asked.
"Because even if I don't go, you should. Live your life to the fullest right now", he said.
You sat up and watched as he grabbed his red backpack that sat on the small couch across your room. The pout on your face caught his attention so he quickly kissed you again and said he's gonna call you later.
"Poo", you mumbled as he left.
Around 6pm, Minho called you saying that he's gonna be babysitting for a little bit and that he'll meet you at the party. Unfortunately you still haven't gotten your drivers license because the fear of people judging you on the road is preventing you from doing so.
Uber it is.
When you arrived at the party while wearing a tight black dress that stops right above your knees, you got a few stares from people. There were others who were whispering "isn't that Minho's girlfriend?", "what is she doing here?", "she goes to parties?". It was a bit overwhelming but once your friend Hyunjin spotted you, he called your name and walked towards you.
"Minho said you were coming. Come here, I need your help", he held onto your wrist and lead you towards the kitchen.
He stopped in front of the counter that held many drinks, some were non-alcoholic but the majority is a bunch of alcohol. Because what type of party is a party without alcohol?
"Will you help me taste test? I'm trying to come up with a drink that will blow everyone's mind. I just don't know which ones to mix and combine", he said, scratching his head as he scanned the drinks.
"And how am I gonna be of help if I don't drink? I'm not even old enough", you said.
"Dude, none of us are", he laughed before mixing two drinks, you never caught the flavor.
He shoved the cup into your hands and waited. You've never tasted alcohol before, mostly because the thought of getting shit-face drunk and doing something incredibly stupid without having any memory of what happened the next day terrifies you. No one will remember but those who have recorded the incident.
You brought the cup up to your lips, took a small sip, felt the burning sensation down your throat and placed the cup on the counter.
"Wtf was that??", you coughed and shook your head.
"It's strong right? That's what I'm going for", he said, adding two more drinks in before handing it to you, "what about this one?"
"Why are you giving it to me? Why don't you try it??", you asked, still trying to get rid of the nasty aftertaste.
"Because I'm numb to alcohol now. I need someone who's least experienced in drinking. It's a win-win because you can now choose which alcoholic drinks are good and not good of your taste", he said and watched as you drank the second time.
You were a few cups of alcohol in and you swear you can see two Hyunjins.
"Hey, maybe she's had enough. Minho isn't gonna like that she's drinking", Chan said as he stopped you from drinking any more.
"Awww party pooper", you whined, booping the tip of his nose.
"She's already drunk? Hm, rookie", Hyunjin raised an eyebrow as you rubbed your eyes.
"(Y/n), I'm gonna get you some water. Stay here", Chan said before heading towards the big bucket containing ice and water bottles.
Your eyes roamed around until you spotted a fish tank. You stumbled forward, getting lost in the crowd of people.
There were a few fish that looked funny, but you were giggling more at your reflection.
"That's a funny looking fish", you laughed before tapping on the glass.
A few feet from you were two familiar voices. Peeking the corner, you can see Minho talking to his ex girlfriend. Her hand was on his arm, a smile on her face as she stepped closer to him.
Not liking that one bit, you stormed out the other way until you were in the backyard. The pool was filled with two couples who were making out while this random dude threw himself in, splashing the couples.
Not many people were outside, which is good. You stepped over a random drunk who's passed out on the concrete floor and sat down on the bench.
Your arms cross over each other on your chest, feeling a bit light headed. Then an all familiar smell hit both your nostrils, causing goosebumps all over your arms.
Turning to your left, you see a guy puffing a cigarette. Your eyes couldn't look away. He noticed and asked if you wanted one, taking out the packet of cigarettes and putting it in front of you.
Gulping, you tried to resist. Your hand kept twitching and even though you're really drunk, you knew that even holding one is bad.
"(Y/n)."
Looking back, you can see Minho quickly heading towards you. He glared at the guy before grabbing your hand to pull you away from the party. He lead you towards his car and was about to open the door for you but you pulled your hand away, almost stumbling back.
"You're drunk. You need to go home", he said.
"Weren't you the one that said to have fun? I was having fun. You can just run along back to Arie, you big liar", you slurred your words, "I saw you talking to her."
"I'm not having this conversation with you right now. Get in. I'm taking you home. We'll talk about it tomorrow when you recollect everything", he said, opening the passenger door for you.
"I'd rather smoke than have a conversation with you. Smoking feels good. And you suck", you said before being pulled into the car.
He put your seat belt on, and for some odd reason you leaned forward and sniffed his hair which smelled like strawberries.
"You took my shampoo, didn't you?", you asked, pointing a finger in the air.
Minho ignored her and shut the door. He went around and got into his side, putting on his seatbelt, turning on the engine and drove off.
While driving, he stayed quiet. (Y/n) stayed quiet as well and glanced over at him a few times. Sighing, she sat all the way back and crossed her arms over her chest.
It was quiet...for about 7 minutes. She couldn't take it. She wanted to know. All this thinking is making her a bit sober(not really).
"Why were you talking to her? You said you don't but you lied", she started, looking over at him but he kept his eyes on the road, "do you still like her?"
He avoided the question and changed the subject, "you were gonna smoke, weren't you?"
"I wasn't. I only drank...a lottle..little. I was having fun. I don't know why you're driving me away from the party. I want to go back", you said.
"No. Going to the party was a bad idea. That's my fault. Let's get you home. I'll buy food and bring it back to you–"
"Are you gonna stay with me?", you asked.
"Yeah. You're still a bit drunk and I don't want anything to happen to you. We'll talk more tomorrow."
So he bought you pancakes because you were craving it, took you home, fed you, and once you were done eating, he laid down next to you, wrapping his arm around your waist.
"You reek of alcohol. And not just normal beer. What the hell did you drink?", he asked you.
"Mmm...I don't know. Hyunjin kept mixing drinks and handed them to me. He said alcohol has no effect on him now so he needed someone less experienced. The drinks were too strong but I have to admit they were really good", you said.
Smiling, Minho shook his head and kissed your forehead, "remind me to have a conversation with Hyunjin."
"Mmm...", you silently mumbled as your eyes began to close.
He heard your snoring and looked down, trying not to laugh as you fell asleep with your mouth open. He took his hand right under your chin and closed your mouth.
The next morning, you woke up with a really bad hangover, one that makes you want to bang your head against the wall just to get rid of it.
You were alone in your bedroom, not remembering how you got into your pjs. You swung your legs to the edge of the bed while muttering an "ow."
Standing up, you slightly stumbled over to your bathroom and hovered over the sink, turning on the water to splash some on your face.
"Why do people get drunk if they feel like shit after?", you asked yourself, combing your hair back with your fingers.
"Because they like the feeling of adrenaline. Some people need alcohol to feel it but then they regret it after. Others have completely different reasons on why they drink but I'm not gonna get too into detail. Come on, I made breakfast", Minho was leaning against the doorframe of the bathroom, smiling before holding your hand to lead you towards the kitchen.
The aroma of waffles and eggs caught your attention. The kitchen table was set up beautifully; yellow flowers in a vase that was in the center of the table, food scattered on plates, a scented candle lit right next to it.
"What's all this for?", you asked.
Minho pulled out the chair for you to sit before he sat down on the other side.
"It's my way of apologizing. I shouldn't have approached you the way I did. All I saw was this random guy giving you a cigarette and I should've trusted you in not taking one. You know, we're gonna go to college soon and we might not see each other all the time. I worry all the time even when I have no reason to. I'm sorry", he said.
You scooted your chair forward and tilted your head.
"I appreciate you apologizing.....but I honestly have no idea what the hell happened yesterday. All I remember is chugging down cups of alcohol that Hyunjin was mixing. And then I remember fish. That's it", you admitted.
He couldn't help but chuckle and told her everything that happened. She couldn't really believe it because he even told her about Arie speaking to him. He said he tried getting away from her but she's always bugging him. That's something he didn't want to admit. But trust is what's important in a relationship.
"So...did I change into my pjs when you brought me home? I don't remember doing that either", you asked, taking a bite out of the waffles in front of her.
"Oh...no actually. During the middle of the night you kept saying how hot it was so you took off your dress and..you were gonna keep going but I stopped you and found those pjs nearby. And then you slapped me for some odd reason", he said, laughing.
Your entire face turned red and you almost choked on your food but covering your mouth helped a bit.
"I didn't know you have a tattoo. You never mentioned anything", he said, eating his food.
"It's embarrassing. It was just a moment and during the process I chickened out so it's halfway done. I never went back", you said.
"What was the tattoo supposed to be?", he asked.
"The Peruvian Lily. It's supposed to carry good luck in friendship and love. But I guess all I'm getting is bad luck", you said.
"Bad luck? I don't think so. I mean, you've had an amazing senior year, you went to prom and graduated high school, you're going to college, you're giving up smoking. All of that is bad luck?", he shook his head.
"All of that happened with your help. I couldn't have done it by myself", you said.
"You said the flower carries good luck in friendship and love. So what am I?", he asked.
You looked up at him, not even realizing that thought. Maybe it did bring good luck to you. Because you met Minho right after getting the unfinished tattoo.
"You wanna do something crazy?"
"Who gets a tattoo and bails midway?", the tattoo artist asked as you laid down on one of the beds.
Rolling your eyes, you watched as he started on the tattoo that's on your side. You let out a long sigh as the needle kept puncturing your skin. Now you remember why you bailed. The pain sucks.
Minho was on the other side, sitting on a chair as he had his arm extended out. He was also getting a tattoo but he didn't tell you what he's getting.
As the tattoo is being completed, the tattoo artist kept going on and on about what tattoo would look good on women and how his girlfriend got one that she regrets. You didn't know what was worse the pain coming from the tattoo or how that tattoo artist wouldn't shut his trap. But you're too nice to say anything.
Hours of torture later, your tattoo is finished and it's quite beautiful. You really love it and thanked the man for doing such a good job.
Minho was done a few minutes before you, his was all wrapped. They paid for their tattoos and walked out of the shop.
"I feel like I've been stabbed", you said.
He was showing no pain at all. Maybe he can tolerate it more than you. Lucky him.
"Whoa, why'd you get that?", you asked as he showed you his tattoo.
"A tree branch? It symbolizes growth. And interprets as a powerful bond with a loved one", he smiled.
"Oh, your parents?", you asked.
"Believe me, I love my parents. But if I were to get a tattoo that represents them, it wouldn't be this. My love for you and them is quite different", he said.
"You got that tattoo because of me? How corny", you said, sticking out your tongue.
Rolling his eyes, he cupped your cheeks and kissed you.
"Finally you guys are here. Listen, do you have it?", Hyunjin wipes his hands on his apron as he went around the counter, Seungmin taking orders at the front.
"Yeah, we have it", Minho handed him his ID which he needs to open his locker. He had to borrow the apron from Seungmin who luckily had an extra one.
"Hey, by the way, did you really encourage (y/n) to drink whatever the hell you made yesterday?", he asked Hyunjin who closed his mouth, put his hands up and backed away before getting back to work.
"Wait, she drank the Hyunjin special? I'm surprised she survived. He tricked me into drinking it and I woke up in my front lawn wearing only my underwear", Seungmin said, placing the mugs on the tray with the rest of the clean ones.
You and Minho both stared at Hyunjin. He chuckled awkwardly before going to the back.
"He lied to me. That's so mean", you pouted.
"Did you get a tattoo?", Seungmin asked Minho, noticing the ink on his arm.
"Yeah. Actually (y/n) already had one. Long story. I went with her and now both of us have tattoos with meaning", Minho answered.
"Okay so what does a tree branch represent? That you're old?", Seungmin joked.
"Ha Ha, no. Anyway, do you have any plans for later?", he asked.
"Yeah a few of us are going to the pier to hang out. Why?", Seungmin said, giving the order of orange juice and a mocha frappe to the customer.
"We didn't want to stay home so is it alright if we tag along?", he asked, you smiling to see if he'll say yes.
"Um..Arie is gonna be there. Apparently she's back with her ex boyfriend. Not sure if that'll be a problem with you", Seungmin said.
Minho faced you and waited for your answer.
"It's fine. We'll be in our own world anyway", you said.
"Great. Be there around 6. I have to get back to work so I'll see you guys later", Seungmin went over to one of the customers who was complaining about not enough sugar in his coffee, which isn't their fault because they can pour the sugar themselves.
Minho opened the door for you, feeling the hot sunny weather.
During the drive to the pier, Minho clearly explained to you that Arie might act like she's friendly towards you but really it's just to annoy you. Not really surprised but you agreed you'd be on your best behavior.
"Hey!", Jeongin ran up to you and gave you a hug.
"Sorry I didn't get to see you at Seungmin's party. But I'm glad you're here. We're gonna play volleyball. Wanna come?", he asked.
You turned to look at Minho who motioned you to go so you did. You followed Jeongin down the stairs towards the sand, the volleyball court and players ready. Sure enough Arie was on the other team.
Minho followed behind and sat down next to Seungmin, Hyunjin, and Chan.
The people on your team were Jeongin, Changbin, Felix and two others that you don't know. Arie took the first serve, hitting the ball over the net. It went back and forth until your team got a point, thanks to Felix.
It went like that a few times, now 5 to 3. Minho kept cheering for you which made you smile....and Arie is looking at you enviously. She served the ball again, hitting it so hard that it h it you right on the face(you weren't paying attention).
You fell back, holding your nose as it started bleeding. Minho quickly ran over to you and checked if you were badly injured.
"You did that on purpose", Felix said to Arie, walking over to you.
"What?? That's insane! It's not my fault she has a short attention span", Arie argued back.
Minho helped you up and gave you a few napkins to hold to your nose.
"Are you serious?? She's obviously faking it for attention. Minho, are you seriously believing this??", Arie kept calling him but he ignored her and guided you towards the bathroom.
One of his friends walked into the girls bathroom with you and told you to wash out your nose so the blood could stop. She went over to grab the emergency first aid kit and grabbed little cotton balls to put up your nostrils.
Of course as you looked at yourself in the mirror, you look like a complete idiot.
Sighing, you thanked her and walked out to face Minho.
"I look stupid", you said, referring to your stuffed nose that makes you look like Pinocchio.
He smiled and wrapped his arms around your waist, pulling you close, "no you don't. Are you alright? Want me to get you some water? Does your head hurt?"
"I'm fine Minho. Just a slight headache. Let's go back. Everyone's probably worried..well not everyone", you said.
"Are you sure you want to go back? We don't have to", he said.
"We came to have fun. A hit on the face isn't going to ruin that. It's fine. I won't play. We can relax on the sand", you smiled to reassure him that you are completely fine, though you're not physically.
"Okay. But if you want to leave, we can. Just let me know", he said.
You held his hand as you walked back towards everyone. The guys were glad you're okay but Arie was even more pissed off, despite having a boyfriend already. Her eyes were on your intertwined hands, wishing you'd trip on something.
"Here, sit down", Minho said, placing one of the towels on the sand.
You sat next to Chan who smiled at you.
"This is so stupid", Arie muttered to herself before grabbing her boyfriend's hand. So far he's been clueless as a lost fly.
She pulled him so they could be sitting not too close but not too far from you and Minho. You knew what she was doing, trying to get Minho jealous but all he could focus on is you. That made her more mad.
"How can you be with someone who smokes? By the time she's 25, she's gonna sound like an old ass lady", Arie laughed.
"If you must know, she quit. She doesn't smoke anymore", Minho said.
"What? I saw her smoking a few days ago. Thought you were okay with it since you're still with her", she leaned back onto her boyfriend's chest, eyeing your reaction.
You were about to explain yourself because it isn't true. You haven't smoked in over a month. Minho held your hand and smiled at you before facing Arie.
"Maybe you should worry about your relationship instead of mine. Plus, it's none of your business", he said to her.
Scoffing, she stood up and walked away with her clueless boyfriend following behind.
"What crawled up her ass?", Felix asked, rolling his eyes before grabbing a soda from the cooler.
So as Chan mentioned his plans for the Summer, you rested your head on Minho's shoulder and thought about how amazing these two months will be with him before going to college.
~~~
"Babe, wait!"
You ran back to Minho who was heading back to his car.
He had dropped you off at the University you're gonna be attending. When he found out about your schedule, he was a bit upset because you're mostly gonna be staying at the dorms. He didn't have many classes Fall semester so he's gonna be staying at your house since it's close by.
"I forgot to give you this", you grabbed his hand, took out a bracelet from your pocket and placed it around his wrist.
It was a bracelet that you made out of beads. It had one white bead that has the first letter of his name and a heart next to it.
"Just in case you miss me or whatever", you said.
He looked down at the bracelet before smiling at you. His hands wrapped around your waist and pulled you close.
"I love you (y/n). Always and forever", he mumbled onto your neck.
"Is that a future proposal?", you asked, smirking.
Chuckling, he slightly pulled back and looked at you in the eyes, smile slowly disappearing.
"You bet."
