Chapter 7: Secrets
Right now, I was sitting at the dining table inside my house. The raven-haired Amanda, who was usually calm and collected, came barging into my house and now was shocked and confused.
Same goes for me, of course.
Not only did Amanda see Quinn and Ida kiss each other, but she also saw Alma for the first time. After inviting her in, we sat down here at the table, no one saying a single word for a few moments.
"So," I broke the silence, "you drink coffee right? Want one?"
"Yes... please," answered Amanda seemingly nervous.
"Alma, you can stay here with Amanda, I'll be right back," I said while standing up.
"B-But, um..." Alma didn't look happy about being alone with someone she didn't know and grabbed my arm. Her ears twitched, and I could see Amanda's attention shift to them. She seemed as fazed by those cat-like features as me.
"Okay, you can come with me... We'll be right back Amanda," I told her and made my way to the kitchen. I took three cups and turned on the coffee machine. Shortly after, I went back to the dining room carrying the cups and the coffee pot, while Alma brought milk and sugar.
I poured coffee for everyone and sat back down. Alma took her cup and hold her nose over it, inhaling the pleasant smell of coffee. The movement of her ears and tail told me that she liked the smell, but was still nervous because Amanda was here.
Amanda was watching her curiously, she probably had never seen a catgirl before. Alma took a sip of the hot coffee and frowned, speaking in a small voice, "T-This is bitter..."
Amanda chuckled, "Oh Honey, you don't have to drink it black... that's why there are milk and sugar on the table, you know?"
I took the milk and poured it into Alma's cup and added some sugar. She tasted again and seemed satisfied.
"This is better..." she said smiling.
"Care to explain what is going on? This seems even more interesting than Quinn and Ida," stated a curious Amanda.
"Well... you see, Alma here is... a friend of mine, who had to run away from home, so she's staying here for a while, right?" I answered, and the shy Alma nodded confirmingly.
"A friend of yours? She seems younger than you though," said Amanda.
"I-I'm eighteen..." replied Alma. Amanda seemed surprised, then looked at Alma's hand, that was holding my hand tightly.
She looked like she realized something and spoke smirking, "Are you two... you know... a thing?"
'I wish,' I thought to myself.
"No, we are just friends, right?" I said and looked at Alma.
"Y-Yes," answered Alma.
For a short moment, the delusional me believed that Alma was looking sad while saying that and might not be satisfied with being only friends. Although chances were slim, I still had hope. "Stay positive" is what people said, after all.
"If you say so..." replied Amanda with a small smile on her face.
"Why did you run away from home?" she continued. She probably wasn't going to get an answer to that.
"Um, I-I..." started Alma, but didn't continue for a moment and just looked at her lap, her ears hanging. I looked at Amanda and shook my head slightly, signaling that this wasn't the right topic.
Amanda nodded approvingly, then said, "You don't have to answer that, I don't need to know."
Alma looked back up and nodded.
"So, what did you want to tell me so badly that you even drove here through this storm?" I decided to change the topic. The thing about Quinn and Ida seemed very interesting.
"Okay, so I was on a date with this guy, Spencer from our school," started Amanda. I didn't know Spencer very well, only spoke to him once at school. Unlike most guys that talk to me like I'm their challenge or an achievement, Spencer spoke to me like a human. It was a nice change from the other dudes at school.
Then Amanda continued, talking quite fast, that was something that she did when she got excited of any kind, "He was pretty sweet and really nice and a gentleman, and I really like him and hope we can meet again, but that's not the point right now. We went to the cinema to watch a movie, and after the movie ended, I went to go to the toilet."
"But when I entered the girls' bathroom, I was surprised by Quinn and Ida, who were making out hard. Ida was pressing against Quinn, who was leaning against the wall. I had never seen two girls kiss, let alone make out," the fast-talking continued.
"They looked like they would do each other right then and there, and didn't even notice that I entered. I was curious as to how far they would go on the public toilet, and somehow got excited myself, although I'm not in the slightest into girls. But when Ida suddenly put her hand down Quinn's pants, it felt wrong for me to be there, so I left the two moaning girls alone," finished Amanda. Silence followed this story we got to hear just now.
"Holy shit," was all I could reply after processing everything she said. I was speechless. I looked over to Alma who was bright red, her ears moving nervously. I could only giggle at that sight.
"So you didn't know?" asked Amanda, the speed of her mouth going back to human standards. I merely shook my head.
Then I answered, "No, as far as I know, Quinn has a boyfriend who is overseas... but Ida did say she was bi, so... Did you come here right after seeing that? What happened to your date?"
"I told him that I got an important call and have to go, but that I really want to meet him again. He answered by giving me a kiss on the cheek, that was really sweet. Then I went to my car and drove here," replied Amanda, getting faster again. This girl's talking was like a rollercoaster, she was getting faster and slower by the second.
Then she looked at her wristwatch, that until now was hidden by the pinkish sweater she was wearing, and continued, "Well I have to go now, I promised my mom that I would come home right after the movie."
"Of course, I'll show you the door," I said while getting up. Amanda's mom was pretty strict when it came to being out late, we cheer squad girls knew that.
Amanda went in the direction of the door, and my eyes wandered off to her bottom half. Her white jeans that were pretty tight emphasized her legs and bum, and I liked the pink nail polish she had on her toenails on her bare feet.
She stopped to put on her shoes, which were black sandals, that had short heels and exposed most of the feet. I wouldn't wear shoes like that when it's raining this hard, but they looked tempting on her, so it seemed like an excellent choice for a date.
When she turned around, I snapped out of staring at her bottom half, and we hugged goodbye. Alma didn't come to the door with us, so Amanda just shouted, "Bye Alma!"
Alma stuck her head out of the kitchen while holding Lucy in her arms and stuttered, "B-Bye..." before disappearing into the kitchen again.
"I don't know all the details, but I'm sure she lived through some hard times, so she has a problem with people she doesn't know. Please don't tell anyone about her yet, it will make things more difficult if anyone wants to see her," I whispered to Amanda.
She nodded and then went to her car. After getting in, she pulled out of the driveway and drove off into the distance.
I made my way back to the kitchen, but after a few steps, I heard cups breaking and a high pitched scream from the kitchen, then Lucy ran out of the room, probably scared by that sound.
I ran into the kitchen and saw Alma sitting on the floor with her back to me. She was picking up shards of porcelain, which were seemingly from the cups we just used.
"Alma? What happened?" I asked. Her ears were hanging, and I could hear her sob, it seemed like she was crying.
"I-I'm sorry... I'm sorry..." was all that her shaky voice could say.
It looked like Alma tripped over the small reddish rug that was in the kitchen when bringing in the cups. I moved closer and stepped in front of her. That's when I noticed the blood that was dripping from her hand.
"Oh my God, Alma!" I screamed and got closer to her. She instantly moved back and defended her head. She probably fell and landed on the shards, the deep cuts on the inside of her left hand proved that.
"N-No, please! I'm sorry! I'm s-sorry! I'll clean it up!" yelled Alma in response. That's when I realized that she probably expected some kind of punishment for breaking the cups.
I instinctively got closer and sat down beside her. I hugged her tightly, which seemed to shock her, then I spoke, "Alma, it's fine. Cups break, that happens. But I won't be mad at you because of that."
She turned to me with a face that looked like she couldn't believe what I just said. Then she stuttered, "B-But... I b-broke them..."
"Like I said, it's fine. Now come with me, we need to patch up your hand. We'll clean the kitchen later," I said while standing up. I held my hand out to the confused looking Alma, but she hesitated for a moment before taking it.
I went to get the first aid kit and then started to clean out the cuts on Alma's hand. When I put on the disinfectant, she flinched in pain which kinda made me feel bad. Seeing this cute girl suffer hurt me, it was like I could feel her pain.
After I bandaged her hand properly, she shyly said, "T-Thank you..." and we went back to the kitchen to clean the floor. There were red spots of blood and the shards of the cups everywhere, but with Alma's help, we finished cleaning quickly.
Then I helped Alma look for Lucy, who was hiding under the dining table. When that was done, I asked, "Do you want to play some games or watch TV? You can decide what to do."
"I-I don't know..." answered Alma.
"Do you know the series 'The Big Bang Theory?' It's my favorite," I suggested. I wanted to rewatch the first episodes of it anyway, and with Alma, it was sure to be amusing.
Alma shook her head and was looking down. She probably thought that she disappointed me again.
"That's good because now we can watch it together," I replied genuinely happy. Alma looked back up and had a smile on her face.
I went over to one of the cupboards where I stored my popcorn and also took out two bottles of Dr. Pepper from the fridge. Alma was observing me while holding Lucy, which gave me the impression that she had never tried popcorn nor Dr. Pepper.
I said, "Let's go upstairs, we can watch the series there," and then left the kitchen with Alma following behind.
When I reached my living room, I put the popcorn into the popcorn maker that I got for my birthday and waited for it to finish. When it stopped popping, I emptied it into the bowl and sat down with the popcorn bowl on my lap. Alma placed Lucy on a pillow on the floor, and the Dr. Pepper bottles on the table then sat down beside me. I turned the TV on and started a streaming service, which might be the most useful thing ever invented. Aside from all the invented things that were more useful, at least. Like that, we started watching "The Big Bang Theory."
When we were merely one episode in, I could already tell that Alma liked it. She was laughing and seemed happy while the series was running. And I was just glad that I could spend time with her.
We were laughing, eating popcorn and drinking Dr. Pepper. Those were all things I usually did, but with Alma, it felt kind of... unique somehow.
As the first episode ended, I asked, "Do you want to continue watching this?" and Alma answered genuinely happy, "Yes please," which made me very happy.
As the intro of the second episode was playing, I looked over to Alma who was concentrating on the screen. I took one piece of popcorn and said, "Hey Alma, catch," and threw it as soon as she turned over to me.
The salty corn hit her right on her nose and fell down on her lap. She looked at it, then back at me and had the most confused expression I had ever seen on her face. It looked so cute that I had no doubt about it anymore, Alma was the most adorable creature in existence.
"You were supposed to catch it with your mouth, you know?" I said while laughing.
"Oh..." replied Alma then took the popcorn that landed on her lap and threw it back to me. I caught it and tossed another one in her direction. We continued playing around while watching the series till late at night.
When we went to bed, I remembered that my parents were coming home tomorrow and that I had to explain the situation to them somehow, which made me slightly nervous already...
