Chapter 33: How to Heal a Broken Heart

Chat Noir had never felt this kind of pain before.

When Ladybug rejected him he was heartbroken, but there'd always been a reason for that. She often took his flirting as a joke, something playful to keep their fights upbeat and interesting.

With Marinette it'd been different. There's been puns, laughter and jokes. But there was something serious about their relationship too. He'd never felt so sincere before, dreaming about being with her and walking down the streets of Paris with their fingers entwined.

He'd decided that afternoon that while the sun was setting he'd go to her balcony with a dozen roses and leaved them there for her to find. But he'd been impatient, eager to see if she was all right after the akuma attack.

He didn't expect to see her in the Nathaniel's arms, kissing him the way she had.

The mental image was permanently scarred in his mind and he desperately wished to claw it out once and for all. That was supposed to be him. Her in his arms with his lips pressed against hers.

But he wasn't angry. He was hurt, pained and left feeling utterly miserable and broken inside. And he wondered how long it would last for. No doubt they'd be an official couple when they arrived at school the following day. Chat Noir sneered at the thought.

And just when he'd started actually enjoying school.

Chat eyed the rose in his hands and twirled it effortlessly between his thumb and forefinger.

She was like the rose in a way, so full of beauty and color but lined with thorns beneath the surface. Or maybe he was comparing the wrong thing. Maybe it was love that brought the thorns, not her.

He heard a loud crash behind him and jolted off the roof onto his feet. Chat bit into the rose and vaulted towards the commotion. A young girl about fifteen wandered through the streets of Paris, throwing seeds across the pavement.

"Some for you. Some for you. Oh! Can't forget about you too now can we?" The seeds hit the pavement, and large thick green tendrils spilled out from inside them, growing larger by the minute. Large carnivorous plants grew from the soil trying to coil around any nearby Parisians.

Chat Noir launched himself onto the street and swung his baton at the plant, knocking it out of the ground. It's dark purple roots shriveled up and died, and the girl sneered at him.

"I despise Cats." She threw more seeds around her and they grew twice the size of the ones around her. "Bring me his miraculous!" she ordered.

Chat pulled the rose from his mouth and grinned, "Wow, my own escorts? I'm flattered." He leapt over them, allowing himself to forget about Marinette if only for a moment. He dodged the vines skillfully, avoiding their sticky mouths and acid.

But one grabbed him from behind. It's vines circled around his ankle and yanked him off the ground, his rose and baton falling to the road. "Hey!" he whined. The carnivorous plant roared at him and Chat sneered. "You'd look better in a salad."

He reached forward and clawed at the plant, but before he could land a hit Ladybug sliced the plant from behind and Chat fell back on the tar. He groaned and Ladybug walked over to him, offering him a hand.

She smiled down at him and Chat took it graciously. "Thank you, M'lady." Ladybug nodded and handed him his baton. Slowly reaching down for the rose. She raised her eyebrow at him and Chat gave her a half hearted smile. "For you, Bugaboo." he bowed and Ladybug pushed him out the way before another vine could grab him.

"You're no heroes! All these people destroy their environment without remorse, why should it be any different when the tables are turned?"

Ladybug stood up taller, swinging her yo-yo to cut the vines and shield herself from the acid. "People make mistakes and some do deserve to be punished, but Hawk Moth is leading you to cause the harm of innocents as well. Listen to reason." she persisted, "This isn't the way."

All the plants turned their attention to her and Chat noticed a ribbon on her jacket. It was a second place prize ribbon for some sort of science competition. It glowed dark blue against her white suit and Chat's ears perked.

"The ribbon, Ladybug! It's in the ribbon!"

Ladybug turned her attention to the villian and Chat knew what he had to do. He vaulted to the top of the building and smirked down at the plant infested street. He summoned his cataclysm and smirked at the black bubbles forming in his hand.

"Over here you overgrown weeds! This cat's gonna show you all how to have some fun."

Ladybug purified the akuma and the girl was left on her knees. She groggily pushed herself up and sighed, holding her hand to her head. "Where -What happened?" she glanced around her and Ladybug held her hand out to the girl.

"It's all right now. Don't worry." Chat Noir walked up to her and glanced at the crowd forming along the side of the road and smiled sadly when he saw a woman frantically rush to the scene.

"Mom?" called the girl.

Ladybug backed away from them and joined Chat on the sidelines. "Pound it?" she asked. Chat eyed her hand, no longer consumed by the adrenaline rush he'd had while fighting. His body felt heavy now, no longer powerful and fast like he'd always known being Chat was like.

He offered her a small smile and pounded her fist. He sighed, "I think I should go home." He vaulted on top of the nearest roof, intent on being alone, but Ladybug followed him. He felt her hand on his shoulder and the way she gently turned him towards her.

"What's wrong?" she asked. Chat shook his head and scratched the back of his head, "Nothing important, M'lady. Nothing you should worry about."

The sun had already set and darkness was quickly descending over Paris. Small lampposts were flickering on, decorating the streets in their familiar otherworldly glow. "Chat?" asked Ladybug. She brought the rose between them and frowned, "Does it have something to do with this?"

To think that despite the battle it was still fine. Chat smiled at the irony of it all and shook his head. "You keep it."

She frowned at him and pulled him into her arms, wrapping them tightly around him. Chat rested his chin atop her head and sighed trying to cage back the utter rejection he felt.

Why was it now? Why now did Ladybug hold him close? Comfort him and care for him when he was in love with someone else?

Ladybug was smart, calm, collected and confident. Everything he thought he'd wanted. But Marinette was sweet, kind and playful, completely clumsy and adorable. She was everything Chat never knew he needed and holding Ladybug tightly in his arms only added to his confusion and pain.

Why couldn't it be her? Why couldn't he still be in love with his lady? Things had been simpler then. But it'd only been simple because he was in love with a fantasy. Ladybug as amazing as she was, was only half of the true her. And he craved more than that.

Ladybug pulled back and gazed up into his watering eyes. "I understand what you're feeling, Chat. I've been through it before...Is there anything I can do?"

There was one thing. And he'd wanted it for as long as he could remember. A part of him hoped and even prayed that this would work. That her touch would seduce him back to her and wipe his mind and heart from Marinette once and for all.

He grabbed her face in his hands and abruptly pressed his lips to hers.

Ladybug's were soft and tender, sending jolts of electricity through his cat ears to the tip of his tail. He pulled her closer, hooking an arm around her waist and curling his tail around her ankles.

He needed more. Chat wanted more of her. She melted into his embrace, lightly pressing her palms against his shoulders and Chat felt a purr vibrate through his chest passed his lips. With his eyes shut all his senses were heightened.

Chat Noir could feel every inch of her pressed against his suit and the way every touch from her fingertips spread fire burning through his body. It was the strangest and most wonderful thing he'd ever experienced.

Marinette came to his mind, filling his nose with the scent of her strawberry shampoo, his mouth with the taste of the things she'd taught him how to bake and heat from her skin. He broke away from the kiss with his eyes still closed and a hushed whisper escaped his lips.

"Marinette." he murmured.

All at once she went stiff in his arms and Chat Noir was struck with the guilt of what he'd just done. His eyes snapped open and he saw Ladybug's flushed face staring at him with equally wide eyes.

Her hair was tangled from where he'd run his claws through and her chest was heaving to replace the air he'd stolen from her. But he couldn't believe it.

He'd kissed Ladybug. He'd kissed the girl he'd been in love with for two years and all he could think about was someone else.

Someone whom he loved so much more than the girl in front of him.

Chat turned his head away, completely aghast with what he'd done. "I'm sorry." he murmured, "I'm so sorry, Ladybug. I -," he swallowed deeply and wrenched his gaze away. "I have to go!" Chat Noir ran towards the other side of the roof and kept running until he was six blocks away and Ladybug was no where in sight.

He felt something prick against his side and found the rose he'd given to Ladybug hooked against his belt. He pulled it out twiddling it between his fingers and sighed. He was pathetic. How could he blame Marinette for moving too quickly from Adrien to Nathaniel when he'd kissed Ladybug out of the desperation to rid his mind from her.

He'd been so unreasonable and now he'd probably ruined his relationship with the two most important woman in his life since his mother.

Tears filled his eyes. Everyone he'd ever loved would leave him. Marinette, Ladybug, Nino and even Plagg. What could he expect? He was just another second rate superhero. A sidekick.

He felt so dejected, so alone and all he wanted in that moment was to get rid of the pain.

He opened his tear-filled eyes and saw something coming towards him. A dark butterfly. It landed in the rose in his hand before he could stop it and all of a sudden he felt at peace.

"Chat Blanc, I am Hawk Moth. All of Paris has wronged you and for that they shall surely pay. I can take away you pain forever. All you have to do is bring me Ladybug's miraculous and you'll never feel abandoned again."

Chat wanted to fight it. He knew it was wrong. But to have the pain that haunted him finally gone was something so relieving and freeing that he knew he wasn't strong enough to say no.

"For a world without pain." he replied. Purple and black bubbles consumed him, covering his blonde hair all the way down to the silver tips of his boots. The rose he'd been holding slithered up his arm like a snake and wrapped itself around his neck like collar, replacing the bell.

The color of his dark suit, like die, colored the rose red until every part of his suit had been bleached. His breathing slowed, his eyesight sharpened and his hearing was stronger more clearer than it ever had been as Chat Noir.

He'd find Ladybug, but first he had some things to do and he was glad he wouldn't feel any remorse while doing them.
