Chapter 21: Leveling the Playing Field

"Wow, Marinette." said Tikki, stifling her giggles. "Who'd have thought Nathaniel still cared so much about you after all these years."

Marinette sat down on her bed and cuddled her cat pillow against her chest. "I know, Tikki. It's insane." She smiled at the kwami, "It's like this whole time he's been looking at me the same way I've been looking at Adrien."

"But this makes everything so much better." added the kwami, "Now you have someone who understand what you're going through. You can talk it out and, who knows, maybe you'll be over Adrien in no time."

The thought of Adrien's perfect smile, sun-kissed skin and sparkling eyes sent a physical pain through her body.

The further she stayed away from him, the less it hurt. And with rampaging akumas around it was probably better if she started avoiding him.

She heard soft knocks echo off the trap door above her and Tikki flew towards Marinette's shelf, hiding out of sight. Marinette couldn't help the smile that stretched across her lips. That silly cat. She stood up on the bed and opened up the hatch.

Chat peered down at her, sitting crossed legged on the balcony with a Cheshire cat like grin on his face. She hoisted herself up and sat on the edge of the ledge beside him. "Hey, Kitty. What are you doing here?"

Chat Noir looked up at the stars and tapped his chin with his clawed hand. He hummed to himself, "Well, it is a beautiful night out."

Marinette glanced up at the night sky, filled with only a few stars overlooking the busy city. A pleasant breeze wafted through the air and the full moon added a fantastical feel to the atmosphere.

"It sure is." she breathed. But she still didn't know what he was getting out.

Chat snapped his head back to her and shot to his feet, extending his arm out to her. "I want to show you something."

"Now?" she asked, "But it's so late and I've got school tomorrow." Chat withdrew his hand and knelt down in front of her, his face barely inches away from hers. His eyes were sullen and his breath ragged.

"I -," his voice was a whisper in the wind, "I know you've been down lately and I wanted to do something special to cheer you up."

Marinette frowned, "This isn't because you're feeling guilty is it?" Chat Noir visibly flinched back and his eyes went wide.

"What?" he rasped.

She rolled her eyes and pressed her palm to her forehead, "Chat, you've got other responsibilities. Just because you saw Nathaniel trying to cheer me up doesn't mean I'll think any less of you if you don't have the time."

"But I do." he replied, his ears pressed back against his head and his eyes narrowed. "I'll show you." He wrapped his arms around her waist before Marinette could protest and vaulted them off onto another building.

"Chat!" she gasped. Marinette wrapped her arms around his neck and clung tightly onto him. Her stomach dropped every time she felt them leap across the street onto another rooftop and shut her eyes.

It was different when she was Ladybug. Ladybug had powers, reflexes and the co-ordination Marinette could only dream of. But up here, with Chat, she was completely at his mercy.

His warm breath brushed against her ear and a soft, soothing chuckle filled her ears. "Don't worry, Princess. I won't drop you."

Marinette felt the wind whip against her face and blow through her blazer, "Wh -Where are you taking me?"

He chuckled again and Marinette held her breath as he vaulted them higher. She pressed her head harder against his chest and tried to focus on the sound of his rapid heartbeat. "That's a surprise, Mari." Finally she felt Chat's body anchor and the wind died down.

She nearly fell out of his embrace, but Chat's hold around her was firm and strong. She hesitantly opened her eyes and blinked slowly to calm the blood rushing through her ears. She looked up at him and Chat smirked down at her.

He gently set her down and turned her, with his hands placed firmly on her shoulders. Marinette gasped. The Eiffel Tower overlooked the entire city of Paris and even though she'd seen it countless times as Ladybug, she'd never really had the chance to appreciate it before.

Not like this. Not with Chat Noir holding her in his arms.

"What made you think of this?" she asked.

Chat pulled her slightly back until she could practically feel the warmth from his suit flooding passed her clothes against his skin. She shivered and his breath sent tingles along the shell of her ear, down her spine, "Cold?"

Marinette nodded shyly and Chat sat down on, pulling her with him. He moved her effortlessly across his lap and readjusted his arms until she was caged against him. The heat from his body encased her, like a warm heater melting away the frost of a cold night.

"Better?" he asked.

"Yeah." Marinette looked back out over the view and rested her head against his shoulder. "You still haven't answered my question." she murmured. Chat shrugged and she could feel the movement of his taunt body against her. Her face flushed.

"I always come here at night when I feel down. My kwami, the creature that gives me these powers, doesn't always like it though." he elaborated.

"Why are you telling me this? Isn't that supposed to be a secret between you and Ladybug?" She couldn't help herself. The idea that Chat randomly told civilians their secrets made her blood boil. Surely he couldn't be that irresponsible, could he?

Chat looked down at her and his eyes grew from playful to serious. "I can't explain why, but I trust you." Marinette watched as his expression grew sombre. "I thought of bring Ladybug up here once, but I doubt that'll ever happen."

"Why do you say that? I'm sure Ladybug would enjoy the view just as much as I do."

"But she doesn't -," he inhaled sharply and Marinette felt his tail curl around her ankle. "She's not that kind of person to use her powers like me. She'll only come out if there's an akuma and even then she never sticks around."

Marinette frowned, "Maybe one day she will." Marinette knew it was wrong to give him hope -she herself knew she never could -but she desperately wanted to see him smile again. He looked down and smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes.

"I don't think so, but I will say one thing." He rested his chin atop her head and ran his claws absentmindedly through her pigtail, "I think I prefer being here with you."

"I bet you say that to all the girls."

Chat chuckled humourlessly, "You're the only girl I've ever been like this with."

Marinette's spine straightened and her breath caught. "R -Really?" she choked.

"Yes." he whispered. He looked back down at her and his smile vanished, "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I let you get hurt." She quickly looked down, but Chat hooked his claw under her chin and tilted her head back up to him.

"It's -," she cleared her throat, "I -I'm better now anyway." She chuckled dryly and leaned further into him, burying her face into his neck. "He would've never felt the same way."

"But why him?" asked Chat.

Marinette sighed in defeat, "I don't know." She'd been going over the same question for the past two days already. She wanted to tell him and explain, but her heart was so tired of it all that she just didn't have the energy.

Her eyes welled with tears and Chat soothed her, "Please, please don't cry, Mari. I'm sorry." Chat lowered his chin back on his head and Marinette sniffled. She probably looked like a wreck.

"No, I'm sorry." she mumbled, "Seems like your visits aren't as fun as they used to be. But give me a couple weeks and I promise I'll be a better host."

"You don't need to apologize for a broken heart. Ever." He replied. Then his eyes widened and his ears perked up. A devilishly wide smile erupted along his cheeky face and he laughed lowly. "Do you hear that?" he asked.

Marinette dried her tears and frowned, "What?"

His face fell. "Right," he groaned, "Cat ears." He shook his head and carefully stood up, pulling Marinette to her feet with him. He took a small step back and bowed gracefully, his hand still entwined with hers.

"May I have this dance, Princess?" Marinette glanced up into his eyes. They were a rich emerald green that, in that moment, rivaled the stars. His grin was mocking and seductive, daring her to decline. She couldn't say no.

"All right, Chaton." Marinette squeezed his hand and, as if by magic, something sparked from their touch. Sparks ran down her spine and before she knew it, Chat had pulled her into his arms and snaked his hand around her waist. He pulled her close until their chests were touching and stared down at her with such admiration she thought her heart would bleed.

And then they were moving, with Chat leading her in a song she couldn't even hear. He hummed the strange tune as they danced, no doubt for her benefit, and helped her glide across the platform.

His steps were flawless and Marinette couldn't look away from him. His touch was gentle and every so often he'd raise her hand to his lips and kiss it. She'd laugh at him and his eyes would sparkle.

Marinette was a bad partner, but he didn't let it stop them. She'd trip and stumble, but he'd only laugh and spin her. "You make a terrible dancer, Mari." he murmured. His chin brushed against her cheek, the corner of his lips near hers. And she flinched.

She stepped back on his tail and Chat hissed. He jumped in the air and grabbed it, causing Marinette to make some more distance between them. "Sorry, Chat I -,"

His face was priceless, a mixture between agonized and flustered. He held his tail firmly; brushing off the dirt she'd scraped from her shoes and giggled softly. His gaze snapped to her.

"You know, Princess. I think you enjoy seeing me in pain." he said.

Marinette shook her head, still giggling, "Now why would I want that?"

He walked closer and his tail dropped on the platform behind him. "Well, first, it was my tail and my claws on your balcony, then my chin and now my tail again." His hands flew to his ears and he cupped them protectively, "I can't imagine what you'll try next."

She rolled her eyes and stepped closer to him, standing on her toes to reach him. She grabbed both sides of his face and tilted his head down until her lips dusted his forehead. "There," she murmured, stepping down, "All better."

Feeling the heat rise to her cheeks, she immediately turned her back to him and walked over to the railing. She rubbed her arms to keep her warm and distract herself. She couldn't dare look at the expression on his face, let alone understand why she'd done it.

It was just so simple with Chat. He was her partner and he was her friend. She was just so comfortable around him. And she didn't regret it.

"I wish I could stay up here forever." she whispered, "I mean, the view is just breath-taking. Through all the lit up windows and buildings, Marinette could faintly make out the bakery in the distance.

She heard Chat shuffled closer and clear his throat. "Yes," he replied, "It really is beautiful." Marinette felt his eyes on the back of her head and risked a glance at him. But he was looking elsewhere.

Thoughts of Adrien quickly resurfaced from the back of her mind. The Jagged Stone concert, the mime performance at the base of this very towers and even the afternoon when he'd given her his umbrella. She should probably go home and return it to him.

"It's getting pretty late." she mumbled, "Take me home, Kitty?"

Chat gently reached down to her hand and entwined their fingers. He brought her hand to his lips and tenderly kissed it, his eyes never leaving hers, "As you wish." And heat pooled within her.

He wrapped his arms back around her and extended his baton beneath them, "Hold on tight, Princess." Marinette tightened her grip on his shoulders and when he poised himself over the edge of the railing she looked down. And her heart stopped.

"Don't worry, Mari." he said, "I'll never let you fall." He buried his head in the crook of her neck and they dived off the edge. Chat's howl of laughter rang through the night and her heart soared with the wind.

She never knew meeting someone like him could be as amazing and wonderful as this.
