Chapter 8 - Liar
=== YOUR POV ===
It's been about a month since I joined Beyond in L.A., and I'm starting to really miss Lawliet. I've been eating and sleeping less than I already did and it's starting to show. Beyond woke me up this morning and told me to go jump in the bath. I did, turning the water on the hottest it could go and stripping, putting on my swimsuit, turning off the water, and stepping into the tub. I get out and put on the outfit he bought for me just before I left.
I walk out into the bedroom, where Beyond is just pulling a shirt over his head and eating a grape jam sandwich. I shuffle my feet and wait for Beyond to tell me what I need to do. I'd felt much better when I first saw him, but now I missed L. Was this how it was always going to be? Back and forth, Japan and L.A.? That was no life. I knew that, sooner or later, I would have to choose between them. But not now. Not today. Not Beyond's Birthday.
I tackle him and sit on his stomach. "Happy birthday." "I never said I was happy." I roll my eyes at the terrible joke and fix my mistake. "Happy birthday, Beyond." "Now you've got it backwards. My name is Beyond Birthday." "I give up." "Good." He pushes me off of him and stands up, offering me a hand to help me up. I accept it, then use the connection to my advantage to pull him all the way out of headquarters and to the park across the street. "(Y/N), why are we here? I have work to do." "So do I." "So why are we here?" I chuckle and pull him into the center of the park. "OK!!!" I turn and run away as Mello, Near, and Lawliet walk out of the forest on the opposite side of the park from headquarters. I hear Near yell Beyond's name and a thud; probably Mello tackling him.
I keep running and find myself back in Beyond's office. I sigh, turn on the computer, and pull up all of the pictures of the murders, studying them. I look at them closer, hoping to find something I'd missed the last few times I'd gone through them. I pull out a jar of strawberry jam, astounded at how much it looks like blood. Then, just this morning. "Now you've got it backwards. My name is Beyond Birthday." I gasped and fell over backwards in my chair. Mr. Johnson, the first man here to recognize me, hears the bang and runs over to recognize me. "Are you alright, Justice?" I nod. "Fine." He just nods and walks away, looking uncertain. I stand up and right the chair. I turn off the monitor and walk back to Beyond's room. Beyond and I had been working on this case for a month and then some. Could my best friend - my little Birthday boy - really be a liar?
