Chapter 13 - Luck
=== YOUR POV ===
I opened my eyes the next morning to see that Lawliet had gone, but Beyond was still laying next to me. I gently got up, careful not to wake him up, and tiptoed into the bathroom. After a quick shower, I threw on a sweatshirt and some jeans, pulled my hair into a ponytail, and grabbed my glasses and phone off my nightstand. I put on my glasses and stepped out into the hallway, quietly turning to close the door behind me, bumping into L in the process. "WHERE--" "I don't want to ride in that thing anymore." He looks at my wet hair. "Don't worry, I changed the bandages." He raises an eyebrow and I roll my eyes, turning around and pulling up my shirt to show him the fresh, white bandages that covered my entire torso. He runs a finger along the still tender wound and I shivered, dropping my shirt. "See? It's fine." "Fine. But DON'T overdo it or I WILL make sure that you don't get out of that bed for a month." I sigh. "Deal."
We walked into the lift and I stepped out into the main interrogation room, earning a gasp from Aizawa and a hug from Matsuda. "Careful, Matsuda. That wound is still fresh." He steps back sheepishly. "Sorry, Alex." "It's ok, you didn't hurt me." "This time," interjects L. I roll my eyes and walk over to my computer. I sit down in the spinning chair and power everything up, grabbing the strawberry from the piece of cake in front of Lawliet's computer. I pop it into my mouth (again, the stem and leaves are already gone. calm down.) and turn back to my computer as Lawliet crouches in his chair, right next to mine, and hands me a chocolate bar. I grab it, shooting him a questioning look. "Don't leave a gift from Mello in the forest next time, ok?" I look at it again, unwrap it, and break off a square. It's got strawberry filling in the middle; I happily stick it in my mouth, opening the first file that Lawliet's sent to me. "Raye Penber... He was the one shadowing Light, right?" (heh that rhymed) "Yes... why?" I pull up the video feed from the train station where Raye died, squinting at the train door he came out of. Rewind. Play. Rewind. Frame-by-frame. "Look. Raye is clearly looking at something or someone here..." I open the station's website, put the number into my phone, and turn on my voice filter.
"Hello?" "This is L. I need you to send me the footage from all of the security cameras at this station immediately." "O-ok...?" I hang up and the phone dings; a message. I connect the phone to my computer, transferring the files as Lawliet states; "I don't remember giving you permission to use my name for this case." I snatch the barely-unwrapped sweet Lawliet was holding from his hand and pop it in my mouth. "Things happen." He turns back to his computer, chuckling. I open all of the files at once, dragging them all over my screen. I squint at the one in the bottom left-hand corner. "THERE!!!" Matsuda jumps and Lawliet immediately runs over to me as I rewind the video and go frame-by-frame until we can see the face of the person Raye was looking at, and it's... "L-Light? But that doesn't make any sense. I thought we'd ruled him out." I turn to him. "Matsuda, go sit down. Don't hurt your brain." I turn back to the computer as Lawliet gives further explanation. "Nobody ever really stops being a suspect; in fact, there's still a..." "0.75%," I input. "Thank you. A 0.75% chance that he is Kira." "How?" "The killings have--" my computer chimes; I've gotten an email. I open it and gasp. "27 criminals were all just killed at the same time." "Well... we know that Kira can set a predetermined time of death." "So... we've gotten nowhere." "Wrong. You've just given us evidence to the fact that Light is Kira." I turn and glare at him. "No one cares what I say. They'll only listen if you say something about it, and don't even try to deny it."
"They'd listen to S." I feel my face darken. "No. I'm never doing that again." I shiver at the memory. "I'm not going to present your evidence." I stand up and whip around to face him. We're inches apart and my head is craned to look at him. "No." I push past him, into the elevator. I press the button for my floor, slamming open my door, effectively waking up Beyond. "Get up. Get dressed. They need you downstairs." I stomp over to my desk, grab my purse, and throw my phone in it. My glasses have started to slip down my nose and I push them back up as I step back into the elevator. Beyond rushes in just as the doors start closing. They open again and Beyond stumbles forward. "Sorry, I don't normally--" Matsuda stands up, rushing Beyond. "Matsuda." Lawliet's monotone voice sounds. "He's working with us. Leave him be." "But he--" "I said, leave him be." I saunter over to L. "Was that real anger I heard just now?" "No." "Not even a little?" He chuckles and I walk toward the exit. "A-Alex, where are you going?" I turn back to Matsuda. "I'm going to go visit my friends." I catch the keys and the rest of the chocolate bar Lawliet has tossed to me and walk out.
I unlock the car and step inside, turning on the engine. While I wait for it to warm up, I plug my phone into the audio converter and turn on Billie Eilish's new album, turn it up, and pull out of the garage. I drive the forty-five minutes to the airport safely, being cautious, and pull into a parking spot. I grab my phone and plug my earbuds into it, starting the album over, and turn the volume up all the way. I pull the airplane ticket I'd purchased yesterday out of my purse as I walk inside, go through customs, and sit to wait for my plane. I board it and find myself drifting off to sleep as the plane takes off. I wake up an hour later, surprised. Normally, I don't ever sleep this much, what with my insomnia and all, and I'm starting to get kinda worried. I turn and look out the window, my back to the two empty seats next to me, when a flash of white-hot pain runs through my back. I whip around to glare at the mother who's brought her young child to sit by me. "I'm sorry, but these seats were supposed to be empty." She glares at me. "I can sit in any empty seat I want to." "Fine. But tell your child to keep her hands and feet to herself. And, for future reference, it's rude to switch seats like that." She rolls her eyes and offers her child some blueberries. I turn back to the window, putting my earbuds back in. I'm suddenly stabbed in the back; I instinctively whip around and grab the thing, ready to strike back.
I immediately drop the little girl's arm, apologizing profusely while the little girl tries to tell me that it's okay and the mom keeps yelling about how she's trying to sleep. I take a deep breath and offer to play with the girl. Her eyes light up and the mom stands up and stalks off, muttering about kids and rude people. I play with her for the rest of the plane ride, and when we land, her mom comes by again, grabbing her by the hand, yanking her out of her seat, dragging her along, leaving me with the toy in my hand. I shove the toy in my bag for Near, stepping off the plane, and hail a cab, giving the address for Wammy's. I step out of the car apon arrival, quietly stepping into the mansion and closing the door behind me. I turn around and am immediately tackled by Near. Mello is lurking around the corner. I hand Near the toy airplane and toss Mello the chocolate bar I'd bought in Japan. "Sweet!!! My favourite!" "I know." I step forward and Near follows me, clutching the airplane. I ruffle his hair and he ducks away, swiping at his head in a vain attempt to keep his hair flat. Mello follows on my other side, munching the chocolate bar, and I can't help but note how lucky I am.
