Chapter 17: Finding Terry Ives and Eleven
Jonathan continues to search for Nancy while she was stuck inside Upside Down with the creature hunting for her. She runs all around the rotten woods, almost choking on the decayed air. She manages to lose it at one point and calls out to Jonathan while he calls out to her from the real world.
"Nancy! Nancy! Come on, come on. Nancy! Where are you?"
Jonathan jumps when he could hear Nancy's voice in the distance, almost as if it was an echo in the world.
"Jonathan! Jonathan! Jonathan! Jonathan, I'm right here!"
Jonathan rushes back to where he found her stuff; he could hear her, but he couldn't see her. Where was she?
"Nancy!" Jonathan breaths heavily in panic. He needed to find her, he feared he might have lost her like Will, "Nancy!"
"Jonathan, where are you? Jonathan! Jonathan! Jonathan, I'm right...I'm right here!" She continues to call out to him, but she couldn't see him. She could hear his voice, but it was so faint. As if he was miles away from her.
"Where are you?" His faint voice echoes around her.
Panting, she looks around for her way out, but she couldn't find it.
"I'm right here! Jonathan! I'm right here!"
"Nancy! Just follow my voice!"
"Jonathan!"
"Follow my voice, Nancy, I'm right here!"
She skids to a halt and gasps as she hears the growling again and rushes to hide behind a tree. She could hear it. It's heavy footsteps walking by. As if it was trying to sniff her out. Hear her. Anything to hunt her and eat her.
"Nancy!" Jonathan continues to search for her, but still couldn't find her.
Nancy tries so hard to be quiet as the growling was so close. She could suppresses her whimpers and cries as the growling begins to walk away from her. She looks up as she hears something familiar. The slimy tunnel she came through! She peeks to see where the creature was and to make sure it was far away from her.
"Nancy? Nancy. Nancy! Follow my voice! Nancy?" She could hear Jonathan's voice coming from the hole. She rushes towards it while the creature was distracted.
Jonathan's light finally shines over the hole. He slowly approaches it, shining his light to get a better view, but jumps back as a hand snatches out from it.
"Jonathan!" Nancy cries out from the hole.
"Nancy!" Jonathan grabs her hand and pulls her out. Nancy grunts and strains to get out of there before the hole fully closed. With a harder tug and a loud grunt, Jonathan manages to yank her out of there just in time.
Both of them pant hard as they watch it close. Jonathan holds Nancy close to him as she sobs against his chest. Relieved that he saved her from the creature.
"I got you."
Jonathan gets her to her feet once she calmed down and both of them got out of those woods as fast as they could. He managed to get her home but stayed with her to make sure she was alright. He knew she was going through shock. Thank goodness no one was home yet. Jonathan managed to get some towels and wrap her up as she sat so still on her bed. She couldn't say anything. She was just so...scared. He gently pulls her close, holding her as she trembles in his arms.
Neither of them realizing the visitor watching them from the window. Steve Harrington, eyeing them with such anger and jealousy.

Hopper, Joyce, and Jace sat at the table as Hopper goes over everything he saw at the Lab. Gloria and Fi stood nearby as they listen. Jace grabs a cigarette and lights it up as Joyce and Hopper chat.
"Look, we gotta go through this again." Joyce sighs out.
"I told you everything that I saw." Hopper says.
"Oh, gosh. Tell me again." Joyce rolls her eyes, desperate for answers. "Upstairs or downstairs?"
"Upstairs. There was a laboratory. It was where they must do experiments or something, and then there was...There was this kid's room." Hopper inhales his cigarette.
"How do you know it was a kid's room?" Jace frowns.
"More like a prison." Hopper sighs out, thinking how horrible it is for a child to live in that tiny room, in a lab.
"So why would you think it was a kid's room, then?" Joyce asks.
"Because, I told you, the size of the bed, there was a drawing, there was a stuffed animal--"
Joyce cuts him off, "You didn't say there was a drawing." She stammers out.
"Yeah, there was a drawing of a...an adult and a child. It said 'Eleven' on it. Eleven and...and Five." Hopper says as he realizes something. He looks over towards Fi. "Five. You're Five, that's what they named you...right?" He asks.
Fi nods, "Yes. Eleven is my sister." She says.
"There are others in the lab?" Joyce gasps.
Fi shakes her head, "So far, it's just been me and my sister. They keep us separate. Only let us be together if we do what Papa...I mean...the doctor wants." Fi stutters out.
"It's ok, sweetie. You've been with that bad man for too long. It'll take time for you to stop calling him 'Papa'." Gloria pats her arm.
"The doctor, is that Dr. Brenner?" Hopper digs in his pocket and unfolds a picture of Brenner. "This man?"
Fi looks over and begins to tremble at that face, she slowly points at it, "Papa." Her voice trembles.
"Hey." Jace gets up as he sees how afraid she was, "He won't hurt you anymore." He holds her close.
Hopper frowns as he watches Fi's face. Seeing the fear in her eyes as if memories were haunting her. "What did he do to her? Do you know?" He turns and asks Gloria.
Gloria sighs as she sits in between Joyce and Hopper, "The night when Five and Eleven escaped from Hawkins Lab, is also the same night when she turned 18 years old. Legally, she's an adult." She stops and sighs, "But they saw her as something else." Her upper lip begins to twitch. "A breeding machine."
Joyce covers her mouth as Hopper sighs angrily and rubs his beard.
"Why in God's name would they do that?"
"Because of what she can do." Jace says with an angry look in his eye.
"What she can do?" Hopper frowns.
"She can...do things that others can't. It's why they took her and her sister. I'm willing to bet her sister can do things like she can, Jace." Gloria says.
"They want to make more. An army of bioengineered weapons. I'm willing to bet." Jace nods, "We need to find her sister before they do." He adds.
Joyce stammers, "Wait, wait, ok. Back to the lab, you said you saw a drawing. Was it good?" Joyce asks Hopper.
Hopper scoffs, "It was a kid's drawing, Joyce. It was stick figures." He says.
Sighing in relief, Joyce gets up and rushes to Will's drawings and slaps one in front of Hopper. Pointing out Will's talent.
"Wasn't Will."
Hopper frowns at the drawing, if it wasn't Will...then. He gets up quickly and paces over to the files he brought with him about what he and Jace found at the library.
"Earl...The night that Benny died, Earl said he saw some kid with a shaved head with Benny. Now, I pressed him, he said it might be Will, but maybe...Wait... Maybe, it wasn't?" He wonders and looks over to Fi as she stands close by. "Your sister, Eleven? Does she have a shaved head?"
"Yes." She says.
"Look... this woman, Terry Ives, she claims to have lost her daughter, Jane. She sued Brenner, she sued the government...Now, the claims came to nothing, but what if...I mean, what if this whole time I've been...I've been looking for Will...I've been chasing after her sister?" He wonders. He holds up a finger at Fi. "You were at Benny's...with Eleven. Weren't you?"
Fi looks down, "Yes." She says softly.
"You saw what happened. It was them, wasn't it? The killed Benny. It wasn't suicide." Hopper says.
"The man, Benny, he helped us. Gave us food. They came and shot him in front of us. We ran, they tried to catch us, but Sister and I stopped them. Then we got separated. I lost her." She says sadly.
"We'll find her. She's close, you sensed her, remember?" Jace says.
"What?" Hopper frowns.
"Its a long story. If we're going to look for Will, we should start here. Terry Ives. She might can tell us everything she knows about the Lab and that bastard running it." Gloria states as she points at Terry's file.

Nancy stood in the shower, under the hot spray while the water washes away the slime and dirt from her body, but sadly, it couldn't wash away the terror she experienced. Flashing back over and over in her mind was the monster. It's growls. Jonathan's voice echoing in the past. She couldn't stop the cries or the soft whimpers from her lips as she continues to replay the horrors in her mind.
Jonathan stayed in her room, making himself comfortable as he spreads out blankets on the floor. He jumps a little when the door opens, but he was relieved to see it was Nancy.
"Better?" He asks.
Sighing softly, "Yeah." She frowns as she eyes what he was doing.
"Is this okay? Uh, I found it in the closet. I can go home." He stammers in embarrassment, thinking why he should sleep here, but at the same time he was worried about her and it might be too dangerous to leave her alone or to go home. "I just figured--"
Nancy waves him off, "Yeah, no. I...I don't wanna be alone." She sighs then eyes him curiously, "Do you?"
"No. Uh... no." He stutters and shakes his head. He sighs as he watches her get into bed. He clears his throat and gets down to get comfy, which was very difficult for him.
Knowing that he would be unable to sleep on the hard floor, she sighs softly and pulls the covers back for him, "Can you just come up here?" She asks.
Jonathan sits up as he hears her voice, "Yeah." He says and gets to his feet and gets into bed next to her. Making sure he wasn't touching her as he lies on his side. He looks over his shoulder and sees her gripping the covers tightly, "Do you want the lights off, or--" He mutters as his voice trails off.
"On." She says softly.
"Yeah." He matches her tone and tries to calm her, "You know, it...it can't get us in here."
"We don't know that." She says.
Jonathan sighs and watches the windows, scanning all around them to be cautious.

When morning rose, Mike went down to the basement to see if Eleven came back. But she didn't. He moped for hours with the fact that she was gone and Lucas wasn't talking to him anymore. Everything was screwing up. He was angry at Eleven, angry at Lucas, angry at himself. He gets up and storms towards the fort he made for her and kicks it over and over in fury. He sighs as the anger was fading and all that was left was the feeling of abandonment.
Meanwhile, Hopper was asking around for information where to find Terry Ives. He calls a friend who could help him. Joyce, Gloria, Jace, and Fi waited in the Jace's truck for Hopper to be done with his phone call.
"Uh, yeah, it's Ives. Terry Ives. That's with a 'Y'." He listens to the other person on the line, "Yeah, I got a pen. Hang on. Mmm-hmm. Mmm-hmm. Great, thanks. I really appreciate this, Frank. Say hi to the boys for me, too, would you?" He says, grinning in triumph as he hangs up the phone.
Jace leans out of the window, "Did you get it?" He asks.
"I got it." Hopper says as he gets into the driver's side, "Okay." He sighs and starts the truck up and takes off.
Joyce and Gloria were looking over the map to see where they should go.
Jace looks over his shoulder to keep any eye on Fi. Fi was looking around out the window in wonder. Seeing buildings, people, seeing the sky for the first time. She didn't give it much attention before. She was truly seeing the world for the first time. Jace smiles as he watches her face light up for once. She looked beautiful with the sun shining over her.
"Hey." Hopper snaps him out of thoughts.
"Yeah, Unc?" Jace clears his throat as he plays it off.
Jim chuckles out a scoff as he gives him a knowing look, "So, this is why you've been strange all week."
Jace sighs and scratches his head, "Yeah, uh, pretty much. I...I wanted to tell you. But...after finding out about the lab and what they did to Benny..."
"Yeah, I get it, kid. I wouldn't have a choice either." Hopper pats shoulder. "She's lucky you found her."
Jace snorts out a scoff, "She's lucky I didn't hit her that night. Almost did, but I rather it be me than the people who had her."
Hopper chuckles, "I can tell she feels the same."
Jace snaps his head towards him, "What do you mean?" He stutters.
"That it was you than the lab." Hopper says.
Jace stammers awkwardly, "Right. Right." He clears his throat, feeling a blush creep up his neck. What was wrong with him? He rubs his neck in embarrassment and looks over his shoulder again to check on Fi. She was still looking out the window, but catches him watching her. She gives him a small smile and he returns one. All he could think right there was how her smile made his heart jump.

Jonathan grunts as the morning light stirs him from his sleep. He squints as he hears papers rustling and sees that Nancy was wide awake. She was sitting up and skimming through a book.
"Oh...Hey." Jonathan sighs out as he was waking up completely.
"Hey." Nancy looks over her shoulder to give him a brief smile, then turns back to focus on the book and information she found.
Jonathan grunts as he sits up next to her, "Couldn't sleep?" He asks.
She shakes her head, "Every time I close my eyes, I just...keep seeing that...thing. Wherever I was, that place...I think that it lives there. It was feeding there. Feeding on that deer. That means that if...if Will and Barbara..." She inhales sharply as fear builds up in her chest.
"Hey. My mom said she talked to Will. If he's alive, there's a chance Barbara is, too." He tries to reassure her.
"That means that she's trapped...in that place. We have to find it again." Nancy states.
Jonathan frowns at her in disbelief, "You wanna go back out there?"
"Maybe we don't have to. When I saw it, it was feeding on that deer. Meaning it's... it's a predator, right?" She points out.
He nods in agreement, "Right."
She places her book down for him to see what she found, showing him information about animals, "And it seems to hunt at night, like a...a lion or a coyote. But it doesn't hunt in packs like them. It's always alone, like...like a bear. And remember at Steve's, when Barb cut herself?" She says as she thinks back when Barb went missing and flips through the pages. "And then, last night, the deer..."
"Hmm, it was bleeding, too." He nods, remembering.
She flips through the pages and points at a page about sharks, "One sec. Sharks can detect blood in one part per million. That's one drop of blood in a million, and they can smell it from a quarter mile away." She says.
"So you're saying it can detect blood?" He asks.
Sighing softly, "It's just a theory. We could test it. But if it works...At least we'll know it's coming." She says.
Before Jonathan could agree with her, they both jump when the door knob begins to rattle. Out of instinct, they grab each other's hand in alarm.
"Honey, are you up?" Karen's voice speaks from behind the door.
Nancy sighs in relief, "Yeah, I'm... I'm getting dressed."
Karen hesitantly speaks, "I, uh, made some blueberry pancakes."
"I'll be down in a second." Nancy calls out.
Finally, they hear Karen's footsteps recede. Both of them could finally breathe. They looked down at their hands and slowly let go of each other. Both of them blush at their impulsive behavior.
To break the ice, Jonathan speaks up.
"Your mom doesn't knock?" He scoffs.
Both of them break out into chuckles.

After discovering Eleven being at the school with others, Dr. Brenner sends out his best agent out to find information about the children Eleven have met. So, he sent her to the teacher who owned the Heathkit.
Mr. Clarke was startled to hear a knocking at his door. It wasn't unusual for him to get visitors but he wasn't expecting anyone today. He walks towards the door and sees a blond woman with a warm smile.
"Hi. Scott Clarke?" She asks.
"Uh, yes." He frowns, surprised to see a beautiful woman at his doorsteps.
"The same Scott Clarke who teaches science and AV at Hawkins Middle?" She asks.
"The very same." He smiles.
"Oh, wonderful." The woman's smile grows.
Soon, she sat in his living room, explaining about a new science program she's a part of and that they were seeking out new recruits.
"...and we're making a newsletter, which we'll send out monthly. It'll showcase all the latest equipment, as well as how-to articles, which the kids write themselves." She says as she hands him a leaflet.
"Oh, that's neat." Mr. Clarke grins with excitement.
"What we're really trying to do here, Mr. Clarke--"
"Uh, please, call me Scott." He gently cuts her off with a smile.
She returns one, "Scott. What we're trying to do here, Scott, is to connect kids from all over the state and give them the support and encouragement to pursue careers in technology. We feel these are the kinds of kids that are going to make Indiana proud." She says as she lies through her teeth.
"I agree, yes. Completely." Mr. Clarke nods in agreement.
"So, you know any kids you think might wanna participate?" She asks, hope in her eyes.
"Oh, I have a few in mind." Mr. Clarke states.
The woman grins knowingly. Internally grateful that she managed to get him to tell her who, basically, had their number 1 successful experiment. Dr. Brenner had a plan. If he had Eleven, it won't be long till he'll have Five. He would use the sister as bait to draw her out.

Mike finally called Dustin to let him know that Eleven still hasn't come back yet. He was growing worried for her. He realized how horrible he was to yell at her. All she was doing was helping them. Dustin told him he was coming over and when he arrived, Mike tells him how he was feeling.
"I just...I can't believe she didn't come back." He sighs.
"She's gotta be close." Dustin says.
"She said it wasn't safe. She just messed up the compasses because she wanted to protect us. She didn't betray us." Mike states.
"Mike, calm down." Dustin tries to comfort him.
"I shouldn't have yelled at her. I never should've done that." Mike continues to pace his basement floor.
"Mike, this isn't your fault."
"Yeah, it's Lucas'." Mike scoffs.
"It wasn't his fault, either." Dustin says.
Mike stops and frowns at him in confusion, "It wasn't his fault?"
"No."
"So you're saying he wasn't way out of line?"
"Totally, but so were you!" Dustin states.
"What?"
"And so was Eleven."
"Oh, give me a break!" Mike exclaims.
"No, Mike, you give me a break! All three of you were being a bunch of little assholes! I was the only reasonable one. But the bottom line is...you pushed first. And you know the rule. You draw first blood..." Dustin says.
Mike's eyes widen at what he was telling him, "No! No way! I'm not shaking his hand." He protests.
"You're shaking his hand!"
"No, I'm not."
"This isn't a discussion. This is the rule of law. Obey or be banished from the party. Do you wanna be banished?" Dustin asks with a warning look.
"No." Mike mutters.
"Good." Dustin says and moves to get his jacket on.
"Where are we going?"
"Where do you think? We're going to get Lucas. And then we're gonna find Eleven." Dustin states strongly, not taking 'no' for an answer. He walks towards Mike and tosses his jacket at him.

Eleven gasps, jerked out of her sleep as the lights come on and the door opens up loudly. She clutches on to her stuffed lion and sits up on her bed as she sees Papa walking into the room. Five groans softly as she sits up with Eleven.
Papa gives them a big smile. He was hiding something behind his back. When he leans down, he presents Eleven a small flower pot with beautiful purple flowers. She smiles and takes it, admiring them.
He turns towards Five and gives her a rose. She frowns at it, but takes it.
He moves to sit down on the bed with the two of them, "Today is a very special day. Do you know why?"
Eleven looks up at him and shakes her head. Five just watches.
"Because today, we make history. Today, we make contact." He boops Eleven's nose. "And you, young lady. This is an even more special day for you." He grins as he caresses her hair with a knowing look.
Eleven jerks up from her dream, breathing heavily. She looks around and remembers where she was. She wasn't at the lab. She was...in the middle of the woods. Alone. She sighs softly. Relieved that she wasn't at the lab, but devastated that Five wasn't with her. She hated being alone.
She looks around as she hears the birds singing their morning song. She needed to keep going. She gets up and walks. She was growing hungry and tired. She felt so dirty. Like the day she and Five escaped from the bad place. She managed to find a lake and kneels in front of it. She frowns at her reflection. Seeing that ugly shaved head of hers. She tries to put the wig back on, but it was full of twigs and dirt. If she kept this on, Five wouldn't be able to recognize her. She couldn't risk it. She snatches the wig off and sees the true face of her. All she could see was Mike's face, hearing his voice yell at her. Anger builds inside her as she glares at her reflection. Her emotions spiked to the breaking point. With a loud scream, she releases the energy. Causing a wave that zooms out towards the middle of the lake. The scream causing the birds to explode from the trees. Escaping from the power that gave them great fear.
Meanwhile at the Wheelers, Karen was busy feeding her daughter Holly as she sat at the table with Ted.
"Here you go. Ah... yum. Okay." Karen smiles as Holly opens her mouth for the food, but she frowns with Holly chews on her food, "Now, sweetie, swallow the pancake."
Holly stops chewing, giving her mom a confused look.
"Where is Nancy? I thought she was coming down." Ted asks.
Karen sighs, "She is. Uh, she was. I don't know." She shakes her head and gets up to head upstairs, towards Nancy's room, "Nancy, what's taking so long?" She calls out. She could hear music coming from the room very faintly.
"Nancy?" She tries the knob, but it was still locked. She sighs, thinking Nancy was still mad at her.
"Nancy, come on." Still nothing. She grabs a hair clip from her hair and uses it to break into Nancy's room.
"Nan--"
Nancy was gone. Her window was open and Karen notices that someone spent the night. She assumes it was Steve. She sighs, disappointed in Nancy for lying to her. Again.

Mike and Dustin made it to Lucas and rang the doorbell. When Lucas opens the door, he sends Mike a death glare.
"What do you want?" He scoffs.
Dustin watches the two of them glare at each other and slaps Mike's chest to do what they came here for.
Mike sighs, "I drew first blood, so..." He holds his hand out for a shake, but Lucas just gives him a look as he eyes his hand and him.
Soon, Dustin and Mike stood in Lucas' living room as he paces the floor, thinking if he should accept the handshake or not.
He sighs softly and turns towards them, "Okay, I'll shake. On one condition. We forget the weirdo and go straight to the gate." He states.
"Then the deal's off." Mike scoffs at him.
"Fine!"
"Fine!"
Dustin break up the argument, "No, no, not fine! Guys, seriously? Do you even remember what happened on the Bloodstone Pass?" He sighs and rolls his eyes at both of them when he sees their confused looks, "We couldn't agree on what path to take, so we split up the party and those trolls took us out one by one. And it all went to shit. And we were all disabled! So we stick together, no matter what!" He shouts.
"Yeah, I agree. But this is the party, right here in this room." Lucas says as he points at the floor, meaning the three of them.
"El is one of us now." Mike protests.
"Um, no, she's not. Not even close! Never will be. She's a liar, a traitor--" He counts how many strikes there were at Eleven.
"She was just trying to keep us safe! She didn't mean to hurt you. It was an accident!"
"An accident?" Lucas scoffs at him.
"All right, accident or not... admit it, it was a little awesome." Dustin chuckles.
"Awesome?"
"Yeah, she threw you in the air with her mind!" Dustin exclaims in amazement.
"I could have been killed!" Lucas exclaims.
"Which is exactly why we need her. She's a weapon! Do you seriously wanna fight the Demogorgon with your wrist rocket? That's like R2-D2 going to fight Darth Vader. We're no use to Will if we're dead." Mike states his argument, but he could see Lucas was too stubborn to listen.
"If you two wanna waste your time looking for a traitor, go ahead, 'cause I'm not spending my time on her anymore. No way! I'm going to the gate. I'm gonna find Will." Lucas says strongly as he shoves them away to prepare.

Eleven managed to make back to town. She walks through the streets and finds a store. She sees people going in with nothing and comes out with food. Her stomach was growling as she eyes the food. She wasn't going to last without food out there. It was risky, but she needed to do it. She walks inside, passing the automatic door and sees eyes on her. People were frowning in confusion and concern as they see her.
But she remembers what Papa told her. After he came to her room, Five was taken away. She was worried why Papa sent her sister away. Usually, on special days, he lets Five be with her when she uses. But not today. She could see new faces.
"It's okay, Eleven. Don't be frightened. These are all friends. They're just here to watch. Don't focus on them. Stay in here, like before." Papa says as he holds her hand, guiding her towards the bath and taps her head to remind her.
"Yes, Papa."
The men opened the bath for her and prepared Eleven for entry.
"Now, remember. Whatever it is, it can't hurt you. Not from here. So there's nothing to be frightened of. It's reaching out to you...'cause it wants you. Hmm? It's calling you...so don't turn away from it this time. I want you to find it. When you find it, and make contact, then after this, you and Five can spend as much time as you want together. Days, weeks, months. As long as you wish." Papa grins. "Understand?"
As happy as Eleven was with that, but she still feared the monster in the dark world. For her sister, for Papa, she will please him, "Yes."
They sent her into the tank again and shut the tank. Soon, she was in the dark world once again. This time, she was looking for the monster.
"Are you lost?" A man's voice snaps her out of her thoughts, she turns and sees a man standing behind her with a concerned look, "Is your mom here? Your dad?" He asks.
Eleven frowns at him, "Mouth breather."
The man was startled with what she said. He didn't know what to do. He looks over to his employees. Even they were concerned.
Eleven walks away and spies Eggos! She opens the freezer door and begins to pull out several boxes.
"What should we do?" The female employee asks.
"Uh...Call the police." The man named Robert stutters out, then watches Eleven walk away fast. "Excuse me. Young lady! You know you have to pay for those!" He calls out, but she wasn't stopping, she was heading for the exit.
"Hey! Stop right--" He rushes to stop her but crashes into a cart, making a woman scream in shock. "You have to pay for those! Stop right there!" She continues to walk right out of the store and he rushes right behind her. "Thief! Thief!" He shouts as he heads for the sliding door, but the door slams shut right in front of him, causing the glass to shatter around them.
Everyone exclaims in shock and clamor in concern. They couldn't believe that happened. Or even how that happened.

It took a few hours, but Hopper finally found Terry Ives' house. He goes down a long dirt path, passing a hunter's lookout and finally sees a mailbox. He goes down the driveway and parks in front of the small house.
Jace helps Fi out and Gloria while Hopper helps Joyce out. Together, they all walked up towards the door and Hopper knocks.
Soon, a woman peeks from the glass door, frowning in confusion as she sees the many visitors. She opens the door and eyes them all.
"Can I help you?" She asks.
"Hi, we're looking for Terry Ives. Does she live here?" Jace Hopper asks.
"Who's asking?" The woman asks.
"The Hawkins chief of police." Hopper says as he flashes his badge.
"And you want to talk to my sister?"
"Well, if your sister's Terry Ives, then, yeah, we do." Hopper says.
The sighs and scoffs, "Okay, well, you can come in, but if you want Terry to tell you anything, you're about five years too late." She warns.
Jace and Hopper shared a confused look, but they all walk inside. The woman guides them towards a small living room with the TV playing. The woman walks in first and gestures them to follow.
"Terry, you have some visitors."
Joyce walks in first with Hopper, Jace, Fi, and Gloria behind her. Sitting in a chair in front of the tv, a woman dressed in a sweater and nightgown looks up with a blank look. Fi frowns as she sees her.
"Hello. My name's Joyce Byers. Uh, this is Hopper. We drove over from Hawkins. Um, you see, uh, my son...he's been missing for almost a week now, and, um, we were wondering if we could talk to you about your daughter, Jane? If there's anything that you could tell us about when she was taken..." Joyce explains.
But, Terry remains quiet.
"What was your relationship with Dr. Brenner? You guys keep in touch?" Hopper asks.
Joyce moves and unfolds a missing picture of Will, holding it up for Terry to see, "This is, uh... this is him. [stammering] This is Will. Uh, you may have seen him on...on the news."
"Broken waves." Fi says sadly.
Jace and Gloria frown when they hear her soft voice, "What, dear?"
"Waves. Broken. There, but not." She says.
Jace and Gloria both frown and Gloria, suddenly, gasps in realization, "Oh, god."
"What's wrong with her?" Hopper asks.
"I told you, you're wasting your time." The woman sighs out and tells them to follow her towards the kitchen.
"She was a part of some study in college." They learned that the woman's name was Becky Ives. She lights up a cigarette and inhales sharply.
"MK Ultra?" Hopper asks.
"Yeah, that's the one. [exhales] Was, uh, started in the '50s. By the time Terry got involved, it was supposed to be ramping down, but the drugs just got crazier. Messed her up good." Becky says as she exhales.
"This was the CIA that ran this?" Hopper asks.
Becky scoffs, "You and Terry would've gotten along. 'The Man', with a big capital 'M.'" She sighs, "They'd pay... you know, a couple hundred bucks to people like my sister, give 'em drugs, psychedelics. LSD, mostly. And then they'd strip her naked and put her in these isolation tanks." Becky frowns as she remembers what Terry told her from the past.
"Isolation tanks?" Joyce frowns.
"Yeah. These big bathtubs, basically, filled with salt water, so you can float around in there. You lose any sense of, uh...sense and feel nothing, see nothing. They wanted to expand the boundaries of the mind. Real hippie crap. I... I mean, it's not like they were forcing her to do any of this stuff. The thing is, though, is that she didn't know she was pregnant at the time." Becky says.
"Jane." Gloria sighs in realization.
"Do you have any pictures of her?" Joyce asks.
Becky was surprised of that question, "I don't think you guys understand. Terry miscarried in the third trimester."
Everyone was shocked to hear that, except Fi who was confused with what it meant.
Becky shows them a small room that had a Crib with mobile and all.
"She keeps all of this up. Been doing it for 12 years." Becky says and sits on the arm rest of a chair. "Terry, uh, pretends like Jane is real, like she's gonna come home someday. Says she's special. Born with 'abilities'." She scoffs.
"Abilities?" Joyce frowns.
"You read any Stephen King?" Becky chuckles at their faces, "You guys look scared, actually. I mean, it's all make-believe." She rolls her eyes.
Gloria clears her throat, "What... what kind of abilities?" She asks.
Becky sighs, "Telepathy, telekinesis...You know, shit you can do with your mind. That's why the big, bad Man stole Jane away." She scoffs, "Her baby's a weapon, off fighting the commies. You know, the doctors all say it's a coping mechanism. You know, to deal with the guilt."
"Do you think there is any chance she could be telling the truth?" Joyce asks and Becky gives her a disbelieved look, "About having had the kid." Joyce stammers as she corrects herself.
"There is no birth certificate, nothing from the hospital. Doctors and nurses all confirm that she miscarried." Becky shakes her head.
"Yeah, but that could've been covered up. Right?" Hopper suggests.
Becky chuckles, "Like I said, you and Terry would've gotten along."
Jace looks around as sees Fi wasn't with them. Gloria frowns as she notices, too. Together, they walk out of the room and find her in the living room. Looking at Terry.
"Sweetie, are you ok?" Gloria asks.
Fi keeps frowns at Terry and slowly walks to kneel next to her. Terry continues to stare off into space, but her eyes would avert to Fi a few times.
"Her waves are so broken. Destroyed. As if..." Fi whispers.
"I've seen this before." Gloria says softly. "This isn't some guilt cope. This woman has been through hell and barely came back. There's only one way...one way...why she's like this. And you know it, Jace."
Jace sighs as he nods, "Electro-shock therapy. But at massive scale. They wanted to keep her quiet."
"And they did. And she's never going to come back." Gloria sighs sadly, "God, that poor girl. If she saw her mother like this...Oh." Her heart was hurting for these children.
Fi reaches and takes Terry's hand into hers. Soft electrical crackling was made and Terry stiffens where she sat. Her eyes closing as if she was in pain, but she sighs and opens her eyes. She seemed more clear. She blinks and looks around, seeing new people and Fi.
"You're my sister's mama?" Fi asks softly.
Terry frowns and sighs in realization, "Jane!" She gasps. "Where is my daughter?" She asks.
Fi gives her a sad smile, "Sister is safe. I keep her safe from the bad men."
Terry sighs in relief, "I know what you're doing. I know you can't hold on much longer. Please, always take care of her. Watch out for her. Give her the love I can't. Oh, how I wish I could see her just once." Tears formed in her eyes as she strokes Fi's face, "Thank you so much for keeping her safe for me. Thank you. Be careful. Dr. Brenner is an evil man. He'll stop at nothing to get both of you." Terry slowly looks up at Jace and Gloria, "Keep them both safe. Please." She begs.
Suddenly, Terry's glassy look comes back. She falls back into her original state and continues to watch tv.
Fi slowly lets go of her hand and feels blood trailing down from her nose. She looks over Jace and Gloria with a sad, worried look and wipes her nose. She was scared. For Eleven and for her friends.
