Chapter 5: Dig Dug (edited)
[Byers Residents]
Joyce let's Mike and Eleven inside as they see Will at the dinner table, he's sweating profusely and looks extremely nervous and panicked.
Eleven: Will?
Mike: You okay?
Will: No.
Joyce: You can tell them Will.
Will: It's like... It's like I feel what the shadow monster's feeling. See what he's seeing. Like in the Upside Down? Some of him is there. But some of him is here, too.
Mike: Here, like, in this house?
Will: In this house and...in me. It's like... It's like he's reaching into Hawkins more and more. And the more he spreads, the more connected to him I feel. And the more you see these now-memories. At first I just felt it in the back of my head. I didn't even really know it was there. It's like when you have a dream and you can't remember it unless you think really hard. It was like that. But know it's like... Now I remember. I remember all the time. Maybe...
Eleven: Maybe that's good.
Will: Good?
Mike: Just think about it, Will. You're like a spy now. A superspy.
Eleven: Spying on the shadow monster. If you know what he's seeing and feeling...maybe that's how we can stop him. Maybe all of this is happening for a reason.
Will: You really think so?
Mike: Yeah. Yeah, we really do.
Will: What if he figures out
we're spying on him? What if he spies back?
Mike: He won't.
Will: How do you know?
Eleven: We won't let him.
Eleven turns to Joyce as she looks at a pile of drawing laced onto the wall it's like a road or river of some sort.
Joyce: Will says it's vines of some sort in Hawkins but we don't know where or what it is.
Will eyes begin to widen and he breaths heavy.
Mike: Will, what's wrong?
Will: It's Hopper, he's in trouble.
[Pumpkin patch]
Hoppers figured out alot in his time. He's figured out that the lab has been causing the pumpkins to got rotten. He dug from sun up to sun down. When he hits the bottom, his shovel hits a something making a noise. He shines his light down and it shows black gooey vines. Hopper breaks through it and hops down shining his light. He's in a tunnel but not just any tunnel. A tunnel in the Upside Down.
Hopper: Shit.
Hopper walks down the tunnel looking down. The vines look to be moving around him. He stops down while in the tunnel. He looks up to see what looks like a huge pimple. He shines his flashlight on it and it shoots out spores hitting him in the face. He coughs falls over. He remembers the toxins as Brenner explained. Through the coughing the tunnel through making his way down until a vine wraps around his head grabbing him. It pulls him down and the vines start wrapping around his body.
[With Five]
Hopper's lied to him since the beginning. He told the boy he had no mother anymore. Five has already left the cabin and hitched a ride from a truck driver.
Trucker: All right. I think this is it.
Five: Five-one-five Larrabee, right?
Five: Five-fifteen.
Trucker: All right, "Five-fifteen." Sure.
Five: Thank you.
Five opens the door and steps out not before the trucker gives him a few words.
Trucker: Hey. You apologize to your mama, yeah? Huh? Must be scared half to death. How long's it been?
Five: Long time.
He closes the door and the driver drives off. Five exhales heavily. This is it. Five walks up to the house and knocks on the door.
GM/N: Go away! I'm not interested!
A woman opens the door, she looks down to see Five guessing he's a boy scout.
GM/N: Look, I don't want your
Thin Mints, all right, kid?
Five: Thin Mints?
GM/N: Or your religious mumbo jumbo. Whatever you're selling, I ain't buying, okay?
The woman closes the door and expects the boy to walk away but instead she hears the door chain fastener unlock and the door slowly opens to reveal Five standing there, his head slightly down and blood running down a nostril. His face scrunched up in anger.
Five: I want to see Mama.
GM/N: Oh my...
GM/N stares in awe. She realized it. He had M/N h/c hair, but curly like his father, he had M/N eye even though it was slightly down, she saw the face of her daughter and son-in-law.
GM/N: Y/N?
The boy steps inside as she makes her way to Five. She hugs him.
In the living room, M/N blankly stares at the TV repeating the words Five heard in the void.
M/N: Rainbow. Three to the right. Four to the left.
Five and GM/S Salk into the living room and Five is the first to speak.
Five: Mama?
M/N: Breathe. Sunflower. Rainbow. Three to the right. Four to the left.
Five: Mama, can you hear me?
M/N: Four-fifty. Breathe. Sunflower. Rainbow.
Five: Mama? It's Y/N. I'm here now.
M/N: Breathe. Sunflower. Rainbow. Four-fifty. Breathe. Sunflower.
Five: What's wrong with Mama?
M/N: Rainbow. Four-fifty.
GM/N: She catatonic.
Five starts crying. He wanted to meet, talk with his mother, but not like this.
[Byers Residents]
Joyce: Hey, is this where you saw him? Is this where you saw Hopper?
Joyce is pointing at one of the newest drawing of vines from Will.
Will: I think so. Yeah.
Joyce searches for it's place not knowing where it is.
Joyce: Okay. Umm
Mike: Here!
Joyce runs to Mike and tapes the picture to the wall.
Joyce: Okay, so... so Hopper is here? Yeah?
Eleven: But we just need to find out where here is.
Mike: Right.
Eleven: Did he say anything? I mean, before he left?
Joyce: Uh, some...something about vines?
The party then hears a knock on the door. Joyce runs to the door hoping it was Hopper.
Joyce: Hopper?
Bob: Surprise. I would've called, but you said not to clog up the line.
Bob walks inside with some soup and puzzels.
Joyce: You know, I... We're fine, we don't need anything.
Bob: When I was sick as a kid, and I was sick all the time as a kid, nothing made me feel better than focusing on these brain teasers.
Joyce: Those are great. Ah...
Mike and Eleven are in the corner watching the two adults. Mike heard about Bob from school while Eleven never got a chance to meet him.
Bob: I could teach him how to play.
Joyce: You know, he's sleeping.
Bob: Okay. I could wait with you?
Joyce: Listen, it's
just not a good time. But, um, you know what? I'll call you, okay? Thank you.
Joyce: You sure?
Bob: Yeah. Well, have him call me. They don't call me Bob the Brain for nothing.
Bob starts walking to the door but with how smart Bob is she knows he'll be able to figure it out.
Joyce: Bob!
Bob: That's my name.
Joyce: If it's not to much could you explain to us the locations Will drew?
Bob: Hmm. Will drew all these hinself?
Joyce: Mmm-hmm.
Bob: Why, exactly?
Joyce: We don't know but we're just trying to figure something out. We... we just need you to help us figure out what...Bob? Bob? What is it?
Bob: I know that shape.
Bob walks over to the one of the drawing in the shape of a heart.
Bob: It's Lovers' Lake. It's Lovers' Lake. I get it. Okay, I get. That's Lake Jordan. And if that's Lake Jordan,
then you can probably find... Yeah, that's, uh, Sattler's quarry. And if you just follow it naturally... it moves to... the Eno River. And there it is. That's
the Eno, do you see it?
Joyce; Okay, so the lines aren't roads.
Eleven: They act like roads.
Bob: And they act like roads 'cause when you follow 'em, you'll see...they don't go over water. And that's the giveaway. That's the giveaway. Ha! Don't you get it? It's not a puzzle, it's a map. It's a map of Hawkins.
Mike: We know that much but we just need to know one single location.
He points to the location Will last 'saw' Hopper.
[L/N Residence]
GM/N: I just need a little help understanding, sweetie, okay? Can you tell me where you came from? Where you've been all this time?
Five was being questioned in the kitchen by his grandmother who was confused. She was to believe that her grandson was dead but here he is.
GM/N: A policeman and a woman came looking for you last year. Did they find you?
Five: Yeah. She won't get better...will she?
GM/N: They don't think so, no. But she's not in any pain. She's just stuck, they think. Like in a dream. A long dream.
Five: A good dream?
GM/N: I hope so.
Five: Is it the same dream?
GM/N: We don't know. Sometimes she says different words. But usually those. She always believed that
you were out there. She always believed that you'd come home one day.
Five: Home?
GM/N: Yeah, home.
Five is then lead upstairs by his grandmother to a room and inside the room is a nursery.
Five: Pretty.
GM/N: I can get you a real bed, and you can stay here with me if you want. How's that sound? I wanna help you, but... to really do that, I need you to talk to me, okay?Doesn't have to be now.
Doesn't have to be today. But when you're ready.
Five: Okay?
GM/N: Okay.
The lights then begin to flicker. They flicker like this when Five goes into the void as Hopper says.
GM/N: Oh, yeah, that. That happens sometimes. Old house, bad wiring...Or if you ask your crazy aunt Y/A/N, it's...haunted.
Five begins to leave the room and follows the flickering downstairs.
GM/N: Sweetie, really, it's just the wiring.
Five: No. It's Mama.
M/N: Sunflower. Rainbow. Three to the right. Four to the left.
GM/N: I don't understand.
M/N: Four-fifty.
Five: She knows I'm here. She wants to talk.
M/N: Rainbow.
[Byers Residents]
Bob: All right.
Joyce: All right. I'm 3.6
inches, what do you got Mike?
Mike: I'm not sure. Mrs. Byers?
Out of context it would be weird knowing this is the first thing you hear but Joyce, Mike and Eleven are trying to find Hopper, while Bob helps still not knowing the main objective. Joyce and Mike using a tape measure to track movements while El and Bob did the hard/easy part
Bob: Hold on. Twenty-one feet, four inches. What about Tippecanoe to Danford Creek?
Joyce: Danford? Where's Danford?
Mike: Dining room.
Bob: Sixteen feet, ten inches. What about Danford to Jordan?
Joyce: Oh, come on. This has gotta be enough.
Bob: It's not. It's... it's really not.
Joycd: Okay. Can't you guys figure it out?
Eleven: Well, it's hard. The ratio isn't exactly one-to-one.
Bob: I mean, if you're twisting my arm, and you are twisting my arm, I would say that the X is...[With Eleven] maybe a half mile southeast of Danford?
Joyce: Thank you. Thank you.
Joyce gives Bob a kiss while she, Mike, Eleven and Will pack to leave.
Bob: What? Are we... we really going?
[Wheeler residents]
Karen: I don't know, Terry. Maybe if it was Margaret Thatcher, that'd be another story.
Terry decided to head to The Wheelers since it's been a while since they've conversed. The doorbell rings.
Karen: Ted, can you get that please?
Ted who is in the living room on the La-Z-Boy asleep.
The doorbell rings again. Terry not wanting to take whoevers time it is decides to take it.
Terry: I'll get it Karen, I have to go anyway, it's it's a while since we've had a girl's chat.
Karen: Anytime sweetie, tell Jane and Becky I said hi.
Terry: *grabs her belongings* Will do.
Terry walks to the door opening it to see Dustin:
Terry: Dustin?
Dustin: Ms. Ives is Mike, El or at least Nancy here?
Terry: No, they're still at Will's.
Dustin: Shit! That's another problem.
Terry: Language.
Dustin: With what's all happening, the two members we need are gone.
Terry closes the door behind her confused with Dustin.
Terry: What do you mean?
Dustin: I kinda made a mess.
Terry: What kind of mess?
Dustin: An Upside Down mess.
Before Terry had a chance to even ask what he had done a burgundy BMW arrives at the Wheelers and out walks Steve, in his hand a bouquet of flowers.
Steve: Listen... I've been thinking... I love you. I'm sorry.
Terry and Dustin both stare, before Dustin realizes Steve may have what they need.
Steve: I'm sorry? What the hell am I sorry for?
Dustin: Steve. Are those for Mr. or Mrs. Wheeler?
Steve: No.
Dustin: Good.
Dustin grabs the bouquet from Steve as he walks to his car. Terry still somewhat confused but up to date walks with him.
Steve: Hey. What the hell? Hey!
Dustin: Nancy isn't home.
Steve: Where is she?
Dustin: Doesn't matter. We have bigger problems than your love life. Do you still have that bat?
Steve: Bat? What bat?
Terry: I'm guessing he's asking about the one you beat the Demogorgon with.
Steve: Why?
Dustin: I'll explain it on the way.
Steve: Now?
Dustin: Now!
Dustin gets in tye back seat while both Steve and Terry share eye contact still confused.
[Arcade(another twist in the script I'm making here)]
Lucas: And that was the
last we ever saw of him.
Lucas decides to go against the party, Hopper and Hawkins Lab rules by telling Max the full story of Will, Five and the Demogorgon.
Lucas: After that, he was just gone. I can't believe it's been that long. Feels like yesterday.
Max: Yeah. I mean, I bet. Wow.
Lucas: It's crazy.
Max: I know.
Lucas:It's crazy, but...
Max: I really liked it.
Lucas: Liked it?
Max: Yeah. Well, I mean, I had a few issues.
Lucas: Issues?
Max: I felt it was a little
derivative in parts.
Lucas: What are you talking about?
Max: I just wish it had a
little more originality.
Lucas: That's all. You don't believe me?
Max: Lucas, come on, seriously? How gullible do you think I am?
Lucas: Why would I make this up?
Max: I don't know. To impress
me or something? Or you're just, like, insane.
Lucas: I tell you all of this. I mean, top-secret stuff. Risking my life and my friendship with kids I knew my entire life and this is how you react?
Max: Risking your life?
Lucas: Oh, so this is funny to you?
Max: Yeah. I mean...kind of funny. Stupid, but funny.
Lucas: Mike and El were right.
Lucas sighs and walks out of the arcade angrily.
Max: Where are you going?
Lucas: Story time's over, isn't it? What's wrong with you? I gave you what you wanted. Told you everything that happen and you just laugh.
Max: I wanted to be a part of the group, not a part of some joke.
Lucas: It's not a joke!
Max: You did a good job, okay? You can go tell the others I believed your lies if it gets you experience
points or whatever.
Lucas: I can't believe that I actually thought you care or listen. El was right. You know, we have a lot of rules in our party, but the most important is, "Friends don't lie." Never ever. No matter what.
Max: Is that right?
Lucas: I had to do that.
To protect you.
Max: To protect me from who, exactly? The big bad government baddies from Hawkins Lab? Maybe it was to protect me from the
Demogorgon from another dimension?
Lucas: Max, I'm serious, shut up!
Max: Oh, no, no! You know what it was? It was Five.
Lucas: Stop talking before you cross a line.
Max: You're serious?
Lucas: I really wish I wasn't.
Max: Prove it.
Lucas: Seriously, Dart. That didn't at least pop up to make it known that something was up?
Max: So what? I'm supposed to just trust you?
Lucas: Yes. Next time something big happens I'll tell you, or maybe you just don't have to believe me.
Lucas processes to exit the arcade completely, still upset, leaving a mildly confused Max.
[With Five]
Five figures that if the lights are flickering and there no gate near them, that means his mother is trying to talk to him. He grabs his blindfold as he uses his powers to change the channel on the television to static.
GM/N: It's okay if I sit here, right?
Five: Yes.
GM/N: And I won't mess it up or anything?
Five: No.
GM/N: Okay. If you talk to M/N, will you tell her that I love her very much? And that I'm sorry that I didn't believe...
Five: Stop talking.
GM/N: Okay, sorry.
M/N: Breathe. Sunflower. Rainbow. Three to the right. Four to the left. Four-fifty. Breathe.
Five is now into the void, down the void is his mother in her rocking chair.
M/N: Breathe. Sunflower. Rainbow. Three to the right. Four to the left. Four-fifty. Breathe.
Five: Mama?
M/N: Sunflower. Rainbow.
Five: Mama, it's me...
Five walks into her vision even though she's in a catatonic state he's hoping it'll be different in the void.
M/N: Three to the right. Four to the left. Four-fifty.
Five softly grabs her hand and holds it in hopes of awaking her.
M/N: Y/N. Breathe. Sunflower.
Five: Yes, I'm here now.
M/N: Four-fifty.
Five: Breathe. Sunflower. Rainbow.
Five: I'm home.
M/N: No.
All of a sudden Five is nor in the void but in someone else body, a memory. It's M/N as she being rushed down the hall groaning in pain. Even with all the blinding lights Five keeps track of what's all going on. 'She's giving birth' In flashes Five sees his birth through his mother's eyes and he sees Dr. Brenner holding him as his mother passes out.
(From M/N'S EYES)
After the birthing process, M/N woke up to an EKG and other monitors beeping steadily. M/N turns her head and sees her mother sitting next to her.
GM/N: Hey, there.
No parent in there life wants to give 'the news' to any other parent but, it was her daughter.
M/N: Y/N? Where's Y/N?
Through her tears and sobs GM/N delivered the line.
GM/N: I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.
M/N knew from the emotions of her mother what she was told but she herself saw the doctors deliver her son.
M/N: No, I saw her.
GM/N: No, no, he wasn't breathing.
M/N: He was crying.
GM/N: No.
M/N: I heard it. He was there.
GM/N: Who was there?
M/N: He took him.
M/N proceeds to take the tube out of her arm.
GM/N: Don't take it out! M/N! M/N!
M/N: No! No!
The scene shift again and M/N is now in front of her safe attempting to unlock it.
M/N: Three to the right. Four to the left.
The lock click unlocking the safe and inside is a S&W revolver. She grabs it. She's getting her son back.
She drives to Hawkins Lab breathing heavily, she's gonna try to walk into a guarded government facility. She knows the risk but they took her child.
She enters the building sweating bullets. She doesn't care if she dies she just wants her son.
Guard: Ma'am, can I see your badge?
Panicking she pull the gun on the guard.
M/N: Stay back. Stay back!
The guard doesn't listen and rushes her, she pulls the trigger. Panicking while on her mission she runs through the facility looking for any kind of room. Or at least a children's room.
She reaches a room that has a rainbow on the door. 'This is it.'
She opens the door and inside is a boy aged at least 4 and a girl aged at least 8. But that's the least of her worries. It's her son in the room.
M/N: Y/N? Y/N?
She crouches down in front of the boy. It's him. It really is her son. Before she had a chance to hold her boy guards rush into the room and grab her.
M/N: Y/N... No! No! No! He's my child! No! He's my child! No! No.
She's being dragged down the halls crying for her son. The guards bring her into a room with a gurney in the center on the side is a box.
M/N: No. No. No. No.
The guards strap her down as she knows what's going to happen. The box on the table us used for electro shock therapy. M/N what'd going to happen she just wished for a better outcome.
Man: Four-fifty.
The guard flips a switch and M/N is hit with four hundred and fifth volts of electricity in her head.
The last thing she sees is her own recap of what's transpired.
M/N: Sunflower. Three to the right. Four to the left. Rainbow. Four-fifty. Sunflower. Rainbow. Four-fifty. Three to the right. Four to the left. Sunflower. Rainbow. Three to the right. Four to the left. Four-fifty. Sunflower. Rainbow. Sunflower. Rainbow. Three to the right.
Four to the left.
Five takes of his blindfold, blood runs down a nostril and a tear runs down his face.
M/N: Four-fifty. Breathe. Sunflower.
[ON the road]
Joyce attempts to drives, Bob, El, Mike and Will to the designated location but Bob is still having trouble.
Bob:There's nothing. There's nothing here.
Joyce: Are... Are we close?
Bob: We're in the vicinity.
Joyce: What's that mean, the vicinity?
Bob: It means we're close. I don't know. It's not precise.
Joyce: But we did all that work.
Bob: I told you, the scale
ratio is not exactly one-to-one. We needed to take...
Will: Turn right.
Joyce: What?
Will: I saw him.
Joyce: Where?
Will: Not here. In my now-memories.
Bob still not up to date on the lore of what's going on is confused.
Bob: In your what?
Will: Turn right!
Joyce takes a sharp turn through a field scaring Bob and the kids. Joyce stops when she sees a jeep.
Joyce: Are you okay?
Mike: Superspy.
They all exit the vehicle and Bob is the first to question the jeep.
Bob: What's Jim doing here? Joyce?
Joyce: Kids, I need you to stay here.
Will: No. Mom, Mom, Mom, it's not safe.
Joyce: That's why I need you to stay here! Stay here!
Joyce runs over to the front of the jeep and looks down the hole.
Joyce: Hopper!
Bob: Hey, be careful.
Joyce doesn't listen as she tries everything in her power to save Hopper. She goes in the hole with Bob following after.
Bob: Just going down the hole.
Bob looks to see vine like things at the center.
Bob: Vines?
Joyce: Give me that.
Joyce says looking at the shovel.
Bob: The shovel?
Joyce: Yes, give me the shovel.
Bob complies and hands her the shovel. Joyce wastes no time on using the shovel on the vines as it makes a screech like noise. She breaks through and sees it. A tunnel.
Joyce: I need you to
help me get down there.
Bob: Joyce, what are you talking about?
Joyce: Bob! Now!
Bob doesn't question further as he helps he down into the tunnel.
Joyce: Hopper! Hopper! Hopper!
Bob being the kind soul he is hops down and joins Joyce.
Bob: Joyce, what is going on?Where are we?
Joyce: Bob, are you okay?
Bob: Tunnels. Is this Will's map?
Joyce: Hopper!
Bob: Are we in Will's map?
Joyce: Hopper! Hopper!
Bob: We're in Will's map.
Bob questions. He knew Hawkins like the back of his hand but this was very new to him.
Joyce: Hopper!
Joyce beings walking down the tunnel wasting no time. For all she knew Hopper could be alive or dead. Bob follows still in awe of the fact...
Bob: We're actually
inside of Will's map.
Joyce: Hopper!
Bob: How did he know all this?
Joyce, ready to call for Hopper again stops when she's sees vines moving around a body. Not just any body. Hopper.
[JOYCE Bob! Over here! Hopper!
Bob joins her side and sees his arm.
Joyce: Hopper!
Bob: What?
Joyce: This is...Oh! It's his arm.
Joyce immediately goes for the risk and tries prying the vines off of Hopper.
Bob: It's choking him.
Hopper: *weakly* Knife.
Joyce: Knife?
Hopper: It's over there.
Joyce grabs the knife and starts cutting away at the vines.
Bob: Hands! Hands! Cut it...
Joyce cuts the vines from Hoppers arm and hands and with a sudden burst Hopper rips the vines off of him with the help of Joyce and Bob, freeing himself.
Hopper: Bastard!
Joyce: Oh, my God. Hopper, are you okay?
Joyce hugs Hopper in a tight hug while Hopper breaths heavily.
Hopper: Joyce.
Joyce: Are you okay? Are you okay?
Hopper nods and turns to Bob.
Hopper: Hey, Bob.
Bob: Hey, Jim.
Not wanting to waste anymore time Hopper turns to leave with Bob and Joyce but in their way is a man in a hazmat suit.
Joyce: Oh, God!
Man: Go! Go! Go! Clear the area! Go!
Hopper stops.
Hopper: Wait.
Hopper picks up his hat. If anything it seems like the hat was more important.
Man: Move, now!
The hazmat suited man wastes no time with a flamethrower and burns the vines as they let out ear piercing screeches. But that's not the only thing that was in pain.
Above ground with dozens of Hawkins guards and doctors, Will slumps over in pain
Mike: Will? Will, you okay?
Eleven: Will, what's wrong?
Will doesn't respond, he only screams and convuls in pain.
