__________

It was a cool morning in Hawkins when I was walking to school. The cold spring morning breeze touched my skinny jeans and lightly covered arms that were only covered by thin long sleeves of cotton sweater I decided to wear. I pulled the sleeves down and balled them up in my fists as I walked faster as if it was gonna help me warm up.
I was about five minutes from school silently cursing to myself for not bringing a jacket with me. It was my fault for not checking the weather. I had just assumed that it was going to be crisp but not freezing as it was this morning.

I began to pick up the pace a little bit walking as fast as my legs would let me travel when a familiar car, the car of my best friend Steve Harrington pulled up next to me idling beside me as I walked quickly.

"Hey loser." Steve called from the window.

"Hey stupid." I huffed rubbing my arms with my hands as I continued to walk.

"I'm gonna cut the chit chat, do you want a ride to school?" Steve asked sweetly. I shivered and nodded. "You're lucky I came this way, I was about to take the short cut to school but deceived I'd be nice and see if you wanted a ride but you weren't home so I met you on the road."
I crawled into the passenger seat as he spoke and I shivered once more making Steve look over at me. "Cold?"

"Very." I replied rubbing my arms again.

"Here." Steve pulled off his green crew neck that he was wearing over top of his blue button up shirt.
I graciously took the warm varsity basketball hoodie and pulled it over my head taking in the scent of Steve's cologne. "Better?"

"Much better."

It only took us a few minutes to get to school. Nothing more than the hum of the car and the droning of the music that was playing very quietly. No one talked. I played with the sleeves on the sweater that swallowed me.

"What are you doing after school?" Steve asked while clearing his throat. He seemed anxious.

"Mm, Well, I was planning on studying for the chemistry exam tomorrow but other than that nothing." I looked over at him, he was concentrated on the road.

I admired Steve. He was an attractive and popular boy which made me wonder why he was still friends with me.
I was nothing more than another face in the crowd. Just a girl who wasn't popular or sporty or very smart for that matter. I was just average.
I found Steve to be a pretty boy. He was pretty both physically and personality wise.
People would always call him a dick but he was actually one of the most sweet and caring people I knew. Frequently I would sneak out of my house at night and go on light night drives with him and just talk to him about life.
It would be a lie if I said that I didn't feel anything towards him.
In all honesty I think I had actually grown to have a crush on him.
Every time he would touch my hand or look at me with his pretty eyes I'd melt a little on the inside, but there was no way that he would fall for a girl like me.

Plus I was like ninety-seven point two percent sure that he was into Nancy Wheeler.

"Did you want to come with me to that diner like fifteen minutes out of town to get a milkshake?" He asked taking in a shaky breath.

I gasped dramatically while smiling at him. "Is the Steve Harrington asking me on a date."

"Actually (Y/n), I am" Steve's grip on the steering wheel tightened.

"Wait What?" I asked shocked at what he had just said.

"(Y/n) I like you." Steve sucked in a sharp breath.

"I- I like you too." I stuttered out while looking at his face that softened as those words fell from my mouth.

"Wait, really?" Steve looked over at me for the first time while driving. His face looked shocked but relieved. "I- I thought you probably thought I was a dick."

"Steve, I'm being serious." I giggled. "You're really sweet." He let out a shaky breath that he seemed to be holding. "I would love to get a milkshake with you after school."

Steve pulled up to school and parked in his usual parking spot and we both got out with smiles. I grabbed my bag and met Steve in front of the car after locked it. He did something I wasn't expecting. He pulled me into a tight hug that felt warm and comforting.
We got looks from the people around us but brighter of us cared. We only cared about the moment we were living in.
We pulled away and walked inside the school and headed our separate ways.

My friends all wished me luck as I walked to the parking lot to meet Steve who was leaned up against his car tapping his foot anxiously.

"Hey." I smiled as I got closer to him suddenly feeing nervous. I layer with the sweater, creating little paws out of the sleeves around my hands.

"Hey." He smiled before hopping into the car and I got in the passenger seat.

The car ride started off silent as the ride in the morning did. It was slightly awkward but mostly just serene, almost as if we were just basking in the feeling of being with each others presences. I was lost in thought until I felt a warm hand grab mine. I looked up at Steve while I interlaced my fingers with his and gave his hand a nice squeeze.
My heart was beating at a hundred miles per hour.

The ride was fifteen minutes of holding hands and silence. It was kind of nice due to my stressful day that I had endured with the three unit exams. It was comforting holding his hand as we drove. He rubbed little circles on the back of my hand with his thumb.
As we arrived he let go of my hand briefly but grabbed it again when we entered the small quiet diner.
We were the only people other than the bored staff. We sat ourselves down in a booth at the back corner when a young waitress took our order.

"I'll take a chocolate milkshake." Steve said.

"And I'll have a (favourite flavour) please."

The waitress ran off with our order. And Steve rubbed his thumb over my knuckles softly.

"You have no idea how long I've wanted to take you out on a date." Steve sighed looking up at me. His face was soft and a small smile curled his lips.

"You have no idea how long I've wanted you to ask me out on a date." I chuckled.

Steve smiled, another moment of silent washed over us like a gentle wave. "Have I ever told you how amazing and beautiful you are?"

We drank our milkshakes and he paid for mine like the nice guy he is. We walked hand and hand out into the light rain that had begun to fall while we sat happily in the warmth of the diner.
He twirled me around in the parking lot. Making me giggle. We pushed each other around making jokes as we always have. But soon we stopped and just held each other next to his car. I looked into his eyes and he looked into mine. Our faces just inches apart.
My eyes fluttered shut as I felt our lips brush each other and quickly the gap closed between us and our lips were pressed together. His hands snaking around my body and into the back pockets of my jeans while mine were wrapped around his neck. I stood up on my tippy toes in attempts to be closer to him.

It was this moment that I knew, I loved Steve Harrington. And there was nothing that I or anyone could do to change my mind.
