Chapter Seven

Chapter Seven

Dustin and I were in the basement, with El and Mike. Well, Mike was cleaning up El when we had gotten a radio call from Lucas.

Quickly, we walked over to the bathroom and burst it open. "Guys! It's Lucas, I think he's in trouble." Dustin quickly rushed out. We walked over to the radio. "Do you remember how he said he was looking for the gate?"

"Yeah."

"What if he found it?" Dustin asked.

Lucas was shouting over the radio like it was doing before, but the signals weak and Mike takes the radio from Dustin. "What's he saying?"

"I don't know, he's way out of range," Dustin explained.

"Son of a bitch!" Was all I heard over the radio.

"Lucas, if you can hear us, slow down." Mike advised. "We can't understand you."

"Yes, I copy!" Lucas cried out. All I caught in his rant was, well, nothing.

"The Man hen, does that mean anything to you?" Dustin looked at us. "Like a code name or name or something?"

"The bad men are coming!" I heard Lucas clearly this time.

"The bad men," I whispered. "Bad men!"

"Stay here," Mike tells El. He darted upstairs, Dustin and I followed. We sprint towards the nearest window, a white van was parked outside. "What's that guy doing?"

Dustin looked at Mike and I. "You don't think..."

Mike ran back downstairs, Dustin and I stay at the window. We looked over and saw more white vans coming. "Oh, no," I muttered. There were at least three vans coming our way.

Dustin quickly shuts the curtains. We run into the kitchen. "Mike!" Dustin yelled.

"One second," Mike tells him, his mother standing in front of him.

"Mike!" I yelled, Mike looked over at me. "We need to leave... right now." With that, I turned on my heel and Dustin followed me, we walked down the stairs of his basement and El was there.

We all go out to the back where we left the bikes. We sprint with the bikes, then for a few seconds we stopped so I could hop on the back of Dustin and El could hop on the back of Mike.

We looked over our shoulders, there were a group of men coming towards us. "Go, go, go, go, go!" Dustin yelled as the boys begin to pedal down the path, the four vans following us.

We took some short cuts to get onto a different road, where the vans weren't following us. "Dustin! Dustin! Do you copy?" I heard Lucas yell over the radio.

"Yeah, Lucas, they're on us," Dustin tells him.

"Where are you?" Lucas yelled.

"Cornwallis," Dustin explained.

"Meet me at Em and Cherry!"

"Copy. El and Cherry!" Dustin yelled back.

"Okay!" Mike calls.

We took an unfortunate turn and I looked behind us, two vans were coming after us. "Shit!" Dustin yelled.

"This way, come on!" We went onto someone else's property, going through the park behind some houses.

"Out of the way!" Dustin screamed to two girls who were playing.

We easily soon meet up with Lucas who was biking on Em and Cherry streets. "Lucas!" Mike cried out as we stopped momentarily.

"Where are they?" Lucas questioned.

"I don't know." Mike stammers.

"I think we lost them." Dustin points out. As soon as he said that, two other vans came screeching behind us and I groaned.

"Go! Go! Go!" Mike yelled out and the boys began pedalling again. There wasn't just two vans, actually, there were three.

Where the hell is the other one?

My questions were answered as the fourth and final white van screeching in front of us. "Shit!" I cried out, Dustin yelling in front of me.

The white van was racing towards us, but we didn't stop. Then suddenly, the white van flips over us, crashing behind us and blocking the other three vans.

We made it to the junkyard. We got off our bikes. "Holy... holy shit!" Dustin gasped. "Did... did you see what she did to that van?"

Mike helped sit El down to rest. "No, Dustin, we missed it." I spat sarcastically as I got off the bike.

"I mean, that was..." Dustin stammers.

"Awesome." Lucas breathes. El looked behind her and made eye contact with Lucas. "It was awesome." Lucas walked over to El. "Everything I said about you being a traitor and stuff... I was wrong. I'm sorry." He placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Friends..." El looked at Lucas. "Friends don't lie. I'm sorry, too."

"Me, too," Mike adds in. I felt guilt wash over me. I didn't tell them about me Banshee. Mike held out a hand to Lucas, who stands up and looks at him. They shake hands.

"I'm also sorry." I begin and they looked at me.

"For?" Dustin asked.

"For not telling you guys I was a Banshee." I gave them a sheepish smile. "And that I live in a supernatural world."

They all gave me smiles. "It's fine, Stacey," Lucas tells me. He looked around the small group. "We're all fine."

-

"This is Randolph Road, right here." Lucas begins to explain as he draws it out on the dirt in front of us. "The fence starts here, and it goes all the way around." He puts a can in the middle. "And this is the lab right here. The Gate's gotta be in there somewhere. It's gotta be."

"Well, who owns Hawkin's Lab?" Dustin asked.

"The sign says "Department of Energy"." Lucas explained.

"Department of Energy?" Dustin asked. "What do you think it means?"

"It means government," Mike said. "Military."

"Then why does it say, "Energy"?" Dustin asked.

"Just trust me, okay?" Mike tells us. "It's military. My Dad told me before."

"Mike's right. There's soldiers out front." Lucas confirmed.

"Do they make, like, light bulbs or something?" Dustin asked.

"No, weapons..." Mike explained. "To fight the Russians, and commies and stuff."

"Weapons." Lucas pointed out.

"Oh, Jesus, this is really bad." Dustin groans.

"Really bad." Lucas agreed. "The place is like a fortress."

"Well, what do we do?" I asked. I can't believe I'm asking a ten-year-old.

"I don't know, but we can't go home." Mike points out. "We're fugitives now."

I put my head in my hands. "God, now I feel like Derek."

"Who's Derek?" Dustin asked and I shake my head, not bothered to explain. That's when we heard helicopters approaching us and I looked up.

"Guys?" I asked slowly. "Does anyone else hear that?"

That's when we spot a helicopter far away, we quickly shoved the bikes under the bus. "Go, go, go, go!" Mike yelled.

"Come on, come on!" Dustin repeats and we all climbed into the bus.

"Get down!" I yelled at them and we all quickly hide between the seats.

"Mental," Dustin muttered.

We had been on the ground for at least ten minutes and no one has found us, thankfully. That's when we heard the radio go off.

"Mike, are you there? Mike?" I heard a girl over the radio.

"You guys hear that?" Dustin asked.

"Mike, it's me, Nancy," I heard Nancy speak. Mike rushed over to the radio and pulled it out. We all gathered around it. "Mike, are you there? Answer. Mike, we need you to answer."

"Is that your sister?" I asked Mike.

"This is an emergency, Mike." Nancy pleaded. "Do you copy? Mike, do you copy?"

"Okay, this is really weird." Dustin suddenly said.

Lucas grabbed the radio but Mike snatched it back. "Don't answer."

"She said it was an emergency," I remind the young boy.

"What if it's a trick?" Mike darted his eyes over at me.

"It's your sister!" Lucas argued back.

"What if the bad people kidnapped her?" Mike fired back. I mean, Mike has a point. "What if they're forcing her to say this?"

"I need you to answer." Nancy continued.

"It's like Lando Calrissian," Dustin muttered. "Don't answer."

"We need to know you're there, Mike," Nancy begged.

"Listen, kid, this is the Chief. If you're there, pick up." Chief Hopper spat. "We know you're in trouble and we know about the girl."

"Why is she with the Chief?" Lucas asked.

"How the hell does he know about..."

"We can protect you, we can help you, but you gotta pick up." Hopper continued. "Are you there? Do you copy? Over."

"Answer," I tell him. "Just answer it."

"Yeah, I copy," Mike said. "It's Mike. I'm here." He glanced at us. "We're here."

After telling them where we were, Dustin paces back and forward as we wait for them. "Will you stop pacing?" I asked Dustin, it kind of got on my nerves a little as I sit next to El.

"It's been way too long." Dustin pointed out. "Do you know what? Maybe you're right. Maybe this is all a trap and the bad men are coming to get us right now!"

"It's not a trap." Lucas spat. "Why would the Chief set us up? Nancy, maybe, but the Chief?" Mike gave Lucas a "what the hell" look.

"Lucas has a strong point," I add. "In my experience, you always trust the Chief."

"Lando Calrissian." Dustin pointed at Lucas.

"Would you shut up about Lando?" Lucas groaned.

"I don't feel good about this." Dustin panicked. "I don't feel good about this!"

"When do you feel good about anything?" Lucas shouted back.

That's when I heard a vehicle approaching us, making my eyes wide. We all looked out the window, there was a car approaching us.

A few cars.

"Shit!" Dustin yelled.

"Go, go, go, go," I tell the boys and we ran to the back of the bus and we hide.

"Lando." Dustin pants.

"You think they saw us?" Lucas asked quietly.

"Both of you, shut up." I hissed at them. That's when we heard the door open, but then some grunting and I frowned.

"Hey!" We heard a man shouts and it sounded like a fight was happening. The door creaks open, we all stand up and there was Chief Hopper. I'm guessing.

"All right, lets go." Yup, it sounded like him. No one moved. "Lets go!"

With that, we grabbed all of our stuff and hurried on out of there.
