77. After U
Months have passed and Maya has never felt better.
That day, right after Hoseok dropped her off at the front of her house, Maya rushed back to her room and starting packing. She knew she was about to do something so abrupt and probably will get a truckload of scolding from Parker, but she didn't care.
Maya knew that if she chose to delay one more minute, she won't be going away, taking the break she needs and clear her mind off.
Hence, within 30 minutes, Maya packed very minimally, grabbing her documents and ensured she had her essentials including some cash and credit cards on her before leaving the house.
Once she arrived at the airport, Maya went to the huge digital signboard indicating all the departures and arrivals, in the centre of the airport as she gawked at the huge screen. Her eyes travelled across all the potential places she could be going.
Maya had the cash, she had the 10 seconds of courage to choose. Hence, the decision came like a eureka moment to her when her eyes landed on the board, indicating departure for Singapore in 3 hours.
She quickly rushed to the business class for Singapore Airlines and was thanking her lucky star when she got a seat booked, at a hefty price. Maya didn't care, her bank balance was enough to suffice her without years of unemployment coz that's how well Gardler architects are being paid.
Fast forward to two months in returning back to Singapore, Maya felt like a stranger in her own homeland. Her parents are no longer alive to welcome her home, nor does her ill-treating relatives were worth her success anymore.
Maya chose to contact her only remaining friend Lydia to connect her with the life in Singapore. Luckily, Lydia was nothing like the rest who turned their backs on her. Maya was grateful for constantly having someone as a guardian for her wherever she goes.
Lydia also assisted Maya in getting a decent penthouse in the city which proved to be very convenient for the Chindian girl to explore and relax at her own time. Life has been much more relaxing and relieving for Maya since the day of her return.
She could have chosen to still keep in touch and update her circle in LA about her status, but Maya wanted to cleanse herself, hence she figured it's better she keeps that part of her life away while she gets better on her own.
Just like today, it was Lydia's elder son's third birthday and Maya was invited. Time has slipped in the context where Maya did nothing but helped Lydia to babysit whenever her friend needs a hand and explore the small city on her own.
"Ok, so I will be making brownies for Xander, making sure it's edible and nice." Maya tied an apron around her waist while opening the bag of flour, setting things up on the island of her kitchen.
As Maya was measuring sugar on the scale, her phone rang.
"Oh, hello Lydia, what's up?" She was balancing her phone between her ears and shoulder while pouring more sugar on the scales.
"What? You cancelled the party????" Maya dropped the bag of sugar on the side, properly taking the phone in her hand after dusting it clean on her apron.
"Omg, is Xander feeling alright?" Maya gasped, ready to leave her home and find Lydia.
"Ok, j-just call me when the doctor comes back with the report. I hope it's just a simple food poisoning." Maya pressed her lips in a thin line.
She ended the call by assuring Lydia everything will be alright. What happened was Xander got really sick over the night and was throwing up since then. Lydia had to cancel his birthday party and of coz, Maya supported the decision but soon fell upset for the boy as Xander was really excited to celebrate his birthday.
"I guess I will eat the brownies myself then, maybe I can pass some to Xander when he feels better."
Maya quickly sent a text to Lydia that she will visit them tomorrow and continued her baking. She did it earnestly, hoping it will cheer the little boy up during his recovery.
As she completed the ingredients and placed them in the oven, Maya cleaned up her utensils and reminisced about all the good memories she had with Xander and his little sister Ariana.
Maya unconsciously twirled and rubbed her tummy with a sly smile on her lips, bringing her to think about her own unborn baby. This caused the stinging joy in her heart to turn into an aching longing. Not only Maya longed for her unborn child, but also the father of her baby.
Taehyung.
She knew that no matter where and how she tries to escape, there is no way in taking Taehyung out of her life or heart. It has always been him.
One of the reasons Maya delayed her return to LA is coz she is not brave enough to face Hoseok. Maya knows that Hoseok will be nothing but a great support to whichever decision she makes, but how could she break the heart of the man who poured his all for her?
Maya flinched when the dark clouds outside roared into an electrifying thunder, signalling the downpour which is about to crash the earth. One thing which Maya enjoys tremendously coming back to Singapore is the weather. She loves the constant rainy days.
"Another night to chill in I guess."
She waited around 45 minutes for her brownies to bake and properly placed it away, ready for Xander and Ariana to devour when she visits them, hoping that Xander will recover soon. As the clock strikes 6 PM, Maya felt incredibly tired and ready for a good bath.
"Must be coz of the constant house chores." She grumbled as she dimmed the light in her kitchen and moved to the direction of her room.
As she was walking lazily, the front door of her penthouse rang, indicating someone was there at the door.
She furrowed her brows thinking it can't be Lydia as she is at her home taking care of her sick boy. So who could it be? Maya was alerted with the possibility it might be someone random.
The doorbell continued to ring a few more times, indicating the person behind the door was not ready to leave until she opens the door.
"Screw it." Maya walked faster and opened the door, with the leash still tugging onto the door frame and panel when she noticed it was a delivery boy.
"Oh." Maya was caught surprised.
"Ms Maya Lim?" The delivery boy asked.
"Yea?"
"Flowers for you Ms Lim." The guy squats down the floor and picked a huge basket, filled with wildflowers, blooms of hydrangeas and multiple peonies, making it look like a garden in the basket.
"Are they for me?" Maya asked, still in shock.
"Yea, you're Ms Maya Lim isn't it?" The boy clarified again.
"Yea..." Maya said, in a questioning tone.
"Then these are for you. Can you just like sort of take it already? I need to run for other deliveries before it starts to rain." The boy said politely but in a stern manner, making Maya to quickly unclasp the door leash and take the basket of flowers from him.
"T-thanks, drive safe." Maya replied as the boy didn't even look back before rushing off.
Maya watched the boy left and closed her door, taking in the basket of flowers inside her living room, setting it on her coffee table.
She was still in awe and admiring the beauty when she noticed a small white card was peeking through. Immediately, Maya leapt to take the card and opened it to read the content.
Dear Maya,
I love you so much. I can't wait to hold
you in my arms.
With love,
After "U"
Maya's body stiffened. This can't be. It sounded awfully similar and familiar to the days back in NYU when she received her first bouquet of hydrangeas from V. She still remembers vividly how he always sign off as 'after U' whenever he sends something to her.
"V...V?" Her hand trembles as she clenched to the card, holding it close to her heart.
"How did he knew?" Maya started to ponder, but it didn't take another minute on her solidarity when the doorbell rang again.
This time, Maya didn't waste any time. She jumped off her seat and ran as fast as she could to the door and opened it without a second thought.
"Hey doll, missed me?"
"T-taehyung?"
"Hello Maya."
Taehyung stood there, properly cleaned and polished with his freshly dyed dirty blond back to the usual style, swiped back, exposing his sinful forehead with a bandana. He was dressed in an oversized denim jacket, white T and ripped jeans. Looking just like how he used to look back in Uni day, not ageing even the slightest.
Maya on the other hand, stood there in her oversized T-shirt, wearing nothing but a shorts underneath, exposed and messed up from the baking flour earlier. She stood there, frozen.
"Um, can I come in?"
