At the breakfast bar, Remington was drawing his old house. Andy was out at the studio, leaving Juliet in charge, if it could be called such a thing, until he returned. She was scrolling her phone, looked up when Remington said, "How do you know what you are?"
"Hmm? In what way?"
He put the pencil down, like he couldn't focus on what he was trying to say while holding it. "One time, I think lots of days ago, when Andy said about how you used to be, uh, his wife?"
"Yeah, that's right."
"But he say you not anymore because he...because he turn gay. But how does he know he's that?"
"How does he know he's gay?"
Remington nodded. Her likeness to Andy was noticeable; he could understand how they'd once been together.
Juliet thought for a moment. "Well, you'll have to ask him. But I think for him, being with me long term made him realise that something was off with the way he felt. It took him a long time to admit it, I think he was afraid of what it meant."
"Yes, but how he know now? How he know all the time that he's gay? Is voice inside telling him? I not understand. Is no voice telling me."
"Are you not sure whether you're gay or straight?"
Remington stared at her. "Is bad?"
"To not know? Of course not."
"If I not know then how I be happy?"
"I think you just need to let your mind figure itself out. I mean, you've gone through a lot of changes recently, and figuring out your sexuality can be hard, it's okay to be confused by it."
"Sex-what?"
"Sexuality. It just means the gender that you're into. Like how Andy's into men, so that means his sexuality is gay. And I'm into men, so that means my sexuality is straight See?"
He frowned. "Do I have to be one?"
"You can be whatever feels right."
"Okay."
"You ask Andy about it when he gets back later, I'm sure he'll be better at explaining it than I am."
"Okay. I do that. Thank you, Juliet. You help me."
"That's okay. How's your drawing going?"
Remington looked down at the paper. "Is wrong," he said. "Some lines, not right."
"You can rub them out."
"What?"
Juliet routed through the pencil case Andy had left on the breakfast bar for Remington, took out a rubber, showed him in a corner of the page how to use it. He stared at the blank spot that she just erased with wide eyes, then took it from her and tried it on one of the lines that he didn't like. For almost an hour after, he was drawing lines and erasing them, amazed.
For lunch, Juliet made quinoa salad, and half-way through eating, Remington dropped his fork and burst into tears. Mildly startled, Juliet asked what the matter was, but he just put his hands over his face and ate nothing more.
When Andy returned in the early evening, he discovered Remington under the desk in his podcast room when his hands over his ears, realised he wasn't trying to block noise out, but to listen to his blood, to remind himself that he was real. He knelt before him. The younger dropped his hands into his lap. "Hey," Andy said. "You okay?"
Remington touched the man's hand. "Oh."
"Oh?"
"I thought you not real."
"I'm very real. Why don't you come out from there? Juliet said you wanted to ask me something."
"Yes, I ask how you know everyday what you are. Like, uh, sex...uh, sex..."
"Sexuality?"
"Yes. That."
"You want to know how I know that I'm gay, you mean?"
Remington nodded. "Yes, but I not know if it will make me know, because in your head is not same as in my head. Is hard to say what I trying to say, not enough words in my brain to use."
"Well, it can help a lot to hear other people's stories. And all that reading we're doing will help with your words, you're already doing so good. "
"My brothers tell me story lots of times about that when I come into the world, I make lots of trouble for all the people. And my house which the evil people knock down was all of our house, but they not know how to keep me, so they go away to different house long way away and I stay in my house all by my own until you see me and now I not there no more, I in your house, not by my own no more."
Andy was quiet for a moment after the short speech. Then he moved back from the desk and said, "Come out from under there, I'll give you a hug."
"I not need hug, no evil things happen."
"Hugs aren't just for evil things."
Remington crawled out and sat back on his ankles. "You have face like you not happy when I say about my brothers' story."
"It's not a very nice story."
"Why?"
"You were abandoned as a child, it's not nice to think about."
"I cause all problems is why."
"You were a child."
"Why you sound mad? I done something to make you mad like computer that shouts at me?"
"No, you've not done anything. I'm sorry. Why don't we have some tea and talk about sexuality?"
"Sexuality is new word I learn today. And I learn that if you draw lines you don't like with a pencil then you can make it go away, Juliet show me before lunch. Then at lunch I miss you and I think you gone like the people who go away from my house and I scared Juliet will get mad that I cry, but she's like you, she not get mad." He looked at Andy, said, "Okay, hug."
