17. Code Red

Ironman landed through the emergency entrance, carrying a very wounded Strange. Nearby nurses rushed to find a stretcher and page the appropriate doctors.

"It's Strange," a runningby nurse said to Palmer, and the two doctors ran to the emergency ward expecting some sort of drugged up Stephen.

The hospital's lead surgeons were already taking charge, directing staff and pushing Stephen to the OR. Christine easily went by but Kyra had to push through surgical nurses to be visible to the leads.

"I can help. I can help!" She was yelling.

"Who is this?" The frenzied surgeon who heard her, asked.

"I'm Dr. Dawson, Strange's Intern," Kyra introduced herself, but regretted her choice of title.

"Pass. I don't need students on this," he dismissed her and walked into the OR.

Kyra groaned, the air chilling around her. "I said, I can help! Let me through!" She attempted barging in, but security got in her way.

"No! You're making a big mistake! I can help him...!"

"Kyra," Ironman, who was still present, stepped in to help security.

"Let me go!" Kyra shoved, but Tony grabbed her. "No! He's gonna die!"

"Kyra! Stop! They've got him," he tried to reassure her, but it fell on deaf ears.

"He's gonna die. He can't die," she
mellowed out as Ironman's hold became stronger, almost crushing.

"I have to save him! Wh-why won't they let me save him?" Kyra cried, now aware of Tony in front of her.

"It's not your job, sweetheart. The doctors, they've got him. They'll take care of him," he slowly sat her down on the ground as the tranquilizers he gave her started taking effect.

"He's in good hands," he assured her sleeping form as he picked her up.

"You, and you," he nodded to a guard and an admin and they rushed over. "I wanna know of every second he's here," he pointed his head to the OR so they were clear on who he was talking about. "Starting now. Go!"

The assigned staff ran into the viewing theatre and Ironman flew back to the tower with Kyra.

Kyra woke up with a scream, assuming she'd find herself in the hospital. She wasn't even in the tower. She quickly got to her feet and ran to get things done her way.

"Let. Him. Live!" She yelled at Heimdall and he stepped down from his platform.

"Princess..."

"He has to live! I was supposed to save him! I have to save him!"

"Surely by now you must know, you cannot save him," Heimdall advised, referring to her visions.

"I can't fail. Not this! I was lead here. I was lead to, to him! He can't die! Not when I'm supposed to do something. When I can do something about it!"

"You can't, your highness," Heimdall replied ever calmly to her cries.

"No," she gritted, annoyed by his calm tone. "I won't take no for an answer. I'm going to save him. Or I am going to keep trying again, and again, and again until he does!"

"That's an abuse of your power, princess. You cannot alter time for the sake of one soul," the seer warned.

"You can save him, then," Kyra acknowledged his superiority in skill.

"I..." Heimdall stuttered and turned away

"You can, can't you?" Kyra walked around to face him. "What, what do you need? I'll give you anything!"

"It's not that simple. Saving a life requires a lot of-"

"What? Magic? Take mine," Kyra offered her wrists.

Heimdall stood watching her. He knew her future with the doctor, but the Kyra standing in front of him currently, didn't even know what she felt for the man she was willing to give up her powers for.

"If you won't, then I'll just keep using them. And mess up whatever you think I'll mess up!" Kyra warned at his delay.

"I cann..."

I can.

Heimdall was about to explain that he didn't have the ability to take her powers, but a voice in his head stopped him.

"As you wish," he replied to both Kyra and him.

Heimdall acted out the actions, but he cast the spell that bound Kyra's powers. A set of cuff bracelets appeared on her wrists and sunk away into her skin. As soon as her magic was bound, Kyra's consciousness returned to her body.

"My king," Heimdall addressed as Odin stepped up.

"Let it happen, Heimdall," Odin reassured him. "They must learn. She must learn to not rely on her powers. And he must learn to."

"It is no lie, then, that history repeats itself."

"Kyra has had the good misfortune of being more mature than her uncle at her age. This will not be like last time. They need to be ready, Heimdall," Odin patted him on the shoulder. "For our time is up, my friend."

Heimdall bowed to his king. "It's been an honor serving you. There will be no king more-"

Odin chuckled as he walked to his chamber. "You can drop the act now. Do you think I've been blind to your efforts in ruling in my name? You've done a lot for Asgard, and my family. My sons are lucky to have you their friend. Come, will you not have a drink with me?"

Heimdall followed, and stood by as the king poured them mead.

"Shall I inform the princes?" Heimdall asked as he took his cup.

"You will do no such thing. Let fate take it's path," Odin said and took his seat.

"How long have you known?"

"Ever since Loki confirmed the existence of the mad titan."

"Do you not think, it would be easier to take him down with you alive?"

"We do not have the power to stop him, Heimdall. He knows our power and weakness. Perhaps those that come after us will have more luck. We need to give them the floor."

"Need I remind you what will happen when you die?" Heimdall raised a brow over his drink.

"I've never forgotten. I remember it with my every waking breath."

"And you think she would stop Thanos?"

"She would more likely join him in spite. No, it is not in her I place my hopes in. But perhaps my sons, and their children, and their friends."

"You speak of the heroes on earth?"

"Maybe. They've already once defeated Thanos's army."

"But they haven't taken on The mad titan himself."

"Next time, they'll have her. This is why it is important that she be ready."

"You just bound her powers!"

"She has the power to call on them whenever she needs. She just needs to learn how."

"We've been trying," Heimdall reminded him.

"Yes. But perhaps she needs a smarter teacher.

Of the Strange sort."
