"Dr. Dawson, how can I save your life?" Kyra cheekily answered her phone, tucking the device with her shoulder as she worked on her practice equipment.
"Hi. I have your delivery of elliptical machines?"
Kyra quickly checked the caller ID on her phone and ran a Stark diagnostic to check for bugs.
"Line secure. How are you? Are you okay? I haven't heard from you in a while!"
"I'll live. We're at a secure location. How are you? How's the internship?"
"It was exciting! I thought I'd be jittery even more, but having actual people there really gives you a spine, so to say. Lol."
Steve chuckled stiffly. "Still with Dr. Strange?"
"Yeah. I mean, he's an ass and I wanna punch his pretty face whenever he talks, but he's literally the best. Just don't let him hear you. Why, what's up?"
"A lot," she could hear Steve exhale exhaustedly.
"Start at the top," she encouraged him.
"Well, first of all, you were right. Turns out Rumlow, and a few others, are team Hydra."
Kyra flash backed at the mention of her abusers. Her breath must have stuttered because Steve was quickly reassuring her.
"I don't know for sure, but Rumlow might be on to you. Keep an eye out for STRIKE." His voice sounded like he was going to continue.
"What else?" She pressed.
"Strange is on their radar," Steve told her matter of factly.
"Strange? My Strange?" Kyra was confused. What could Hydra want with Stephen, she wondered as she strayed out of Strange's office.
"Yea, that Dr. Strange. I don't know when or why, but they'll come for him."
"So, imma stay low and keep an eye on him. Got it. Cool! Undercover superhero work, I'm so in!"
"It's not fun! It's dangerous. Don't make yourself a target."
"I can take care of myself. I'm not a child. I'm not even human. I'm an Asgardian."
"And I'm Captain America!" Steve fought back, before he caught his tone. She gave him time to settle down. "And I can't save everyone."
Kyra knew her brother well. There weren't many close people he'd lost, but those that he did lose weighed heavily on him.
"Is Peggy...?" Steve's first love was now old and frail, losing her mind in a nursing home.
"No, Peggy's alive. ...And so is Bucky."
That threw her off. "I'm sorry, y-your best friend, Bucky? The one who fell off the train?"
"Mhm. He's Hydra's Winter Soldier. He didn't remember me."
Kyra understood the pain in his voice. There had been a time in her life when her own father didn't remember her, and it hurt. But he couldn't help it; he was being mind controlled.
"It's not his fault. And it's not yours, either," she reassured him.
"Yeah. It's Hydra's fault. And I'm gonna make them pay for everything they've done to us."
"I can-"
"No. I don't want you in the same room with them again. You just take care of yourself and Strange. I've got people to back me up."
"Alright. Stay safe." She said, ending the conversation.
"You too," Steve hung up.
Hydra was back. Why was Hydra back!? The one thing she had ever truly been afraid of in her life had been that forsaken organization. They knew she was Steve's sister, and Rumlow knew what she looked like.
Her hands were shaking and she needed to breathe. Kyra hunted the halls for the on call room and slipped inside one without checking it. She just needed to sit down.
You're safe with me. I'll keep you safe.
Her inner voice had a weird way of communicating with her. If anything, she would have expected to hear Steve's voice, reassuring her from earlier. Instead...
"Lay you head parallel between your knees," the same voice said from above her.
She finally realized he was laying on the top bunk. Instead of questioning herself, Kyra followed his instructions and hung her head between her legs, calming her breaths.
"You're good where it counts," he complimented her, focusing on the positive than the negative.
In response to her silence, he kept talking. Slowly, she became aware of how at peace she was in his presence. As if his voice had erased the conversation from earlier. As if... she was safe with him.
Finally, Stephen climbed down from the top bunk, immediately tending to his hair in the mirror. "We have the O.R booked in about three hours. I don't need you before then," he passingly commented as he headed out.
Stephen closed the door behind him and turned towards his office, about to walk off until he noticed Christine talking to some military men. This couldn't be good. Nothing coming from them would be good news, and he didn't want to see her upset. Or worse, he didn't want them to take her away.
By the time Stephen was done thinking, Christine had brought the agents over.
"This is Dr. Strange," she introduced him to them.
"Who did I kill?" Stephen joked.
"Hopefully, no one. We're here about an intern of yours," one of the men said.
"Then you've got the wrong Dr. Strange," he looked at Christine incredulously.
"There are other chief neurosurgeons called Stephen Vincent Strange?" A second militant asked.
"Well, you don't really know me as well as you think. I don't take on interns."
"Not even by reference of Tony Stark."
"I wouldn't accept Stark's invitation to take me to space," he was having fun giving them one liner responses.
The first agent sighed. "Are you sure neither of you know this girl? She's known as Captain America's sister among some circles."
"l don't take on 20 year old residents, I don't think 80 year olds will be working with me anytime soon."
Christine rolled her eyes as Stephen managed to frustrate military men.
"You're not gonna answer straight, are you?"
"You seem to not be getting the hint," Stephen pouted at him.
"Obstruction of justice is a crime. Captain America is an enemy of the state. Harboring any allies will get you in trouble Dr. Strange."
"Ooh. Are you going to arrest me? I'd like to see some ID."
The lead militant sighed again and ripped open his breast pocket to produce some ID. SHIELD identifications.
"Seem legit to you?" Stephen showed the ID to Christine.
"Does that mean you'll cooperate?" Agent Rollins asked.
"Oh, no. I just wanted to hold a spy badge. So cool," Stephen smiled like a child as he handed the card back.
"Is he for real?" The third one finally spoke.
"Guy's the number one brain doctor in the country," the second one responded as they turned to leave.
"Knows how to play mind games for sure!"
Rollins grimaced and turned after his men, but then stopped, looking behind Stephen's feet.
"What's behind the door?" He asked before turning back again. His men stopped too.
"Depends..." Stephen said, swiping a hand through his hair, "how much have you read about me?"
"For the love of God!" The third man exclaimed and stormed out, leading the other two behind him.
Christine and Stephen watched them leave, then shared a quick look with each other before immediately stepping into the room.
"I heard!" Kyra was standing right behind the door. "You guys shouldn't have done that."
"Most people say thank you," Stephen said, proudly crossing his arms. He had been successful.
"Thank you. Very much. Really. But you could be in trouble, because of me. I should go. Find my brother..."
"Are you sure?" Christine worries. "That might not be the best thing to do if you are in trouble."
"I don't suppose you could go to Stark's place," Stephen suggested grimly.
"You have any place to go?"
"Well, if Steve and Tony are out, then-"
"You can stay with Christine," Stephen volunteered. "I'm sure she wouldn't mind."
"I..." Christine was at a loss.
"Are you sure? I wouldn't want to impose," Kyra glared at Stephen.
"No, it's fine. You can stay with me," Christine agreed.
"Great, that's settled then," Stephen gave himself a quick one over at the mirror. "And don't bother coming in to work. You're fired." He winked at her, leaving the two women alone.
"He has the worst sense of humor," Kyra shook her head.
"Maxed his nice guy quota. You hungry? I'm starving."
"After the day I've had? I could eat."
