Spying
Nobody was at home, I stayed home all by myself. I cooked myself lunch and the phone rang. I groaned and picked up.
"Hello Byers residents." I said.
"Wendy its me! Armani!" I laughed. My partner at the fashion internship!
"Armani! Hey!"
"Girl, you have to come to the starcourt mall, it is booming with inspiration!"
"Wait, you here in Hawkins?" I asked.
"Visiting my grandma." He chuckled. "Ill buy ice cream."
"Be there in five." I ran to my room and put on mom jeans, a button up shirt, tied my hair up with a scrunchie and tied my converse. I grabbed my bag and drove to the mall. Just as I stepped in, remembered, Steve. He works here. I was gonna turn back but I promised myself that Im gonna grow a pair. There was a bunch of people. It was crowded. I felt hands on my arms and swung me around. "What the-"
"Watch the face!"
"Armani!" I hugged him.
"Come, the ice cream is gonna melt." We ran to a table and and ate ice cream. "Look at the shirt, its so 60s." He pointed at a girls shirt. "Love your outfit. Killing it as always."
"Oh stop it." I laughed. I took a bite of the ice cream. "Wow, this is so good!"
"Scoops Ahoy. A handsome guy works there. Definitely straight." I laughed.
Steves POV
"You see anything?" Dustin asked as I scanned the mall.
"Uh, I guess I don't totally know what I'm looking for."
"Evil Russians." I rolled my eyes.
"Yeah, exactly. I don't know what an evil Russian looks like." I pointed out.
"Tall, blond, not smiling."Dustin kept thinking. "Mm-hmm? Also, look for earpieces, camo, duffel bags, that sort of thing."
"Right, okay, duffel bags." I repeated. I looked up and its Anna and Mark. Unbelievable! "Oh, you've gotta be kidding me."
"What?"
"Anna Jacobi's talking with that meathead Mark Lewinsky." I told him.
"If you're not gonna focus, just gimme the binoculars." We fought our the binoculars. Dustin actually won and used them.
"Aw, Jesus Christ, whatever happened to standards?" I said to myself. "I mean, Lewinsky never even came off the bench."
"Dude, you are the worst spy in history, you know that?" He told me. "I don't get why you're looking at girls. You have the perfect one."
"Seriously, if you say Wendy." I sighed. All he talked about was Wendy. I miss her. Every time someone talks about or even mentions her name, i go crazy! not a bad crazy, a good crazy.
"Wendy."
"No, don't. No." I fought.
"Wendy, Wendy, Wendy." Dustin started to sing.
"Stop, no, no, no."
"Wendy." He sang.
"No! We havent spoke to each other for months. She's probably with a guy already. Probably I wasn't even her type." I didnt want to believe it. Maybe she did. Maybe she didn't.
"What's her type again? Her type is you. She likes you Steve. She probably got scared or something."
"For your information, she never called me. Im not mad about it. I wish i can just see her again. Again, shes probably living her life in Chicago, doing her thing, im happy for her. But i swear to god if i see her with a guy, who doesn't have great hair, im going to hurt someone."
"Now that you're out of high school, which means you're technically an adult, don't you think it's time you move on from primitive constructs such as popularity? Oh, primitive constructs?"
"That some stupid shit you learned at Camp Know Nothing?"
"Camp Know Where, actually." he looks around and he gasps. "Oh no."
"What?"
"Dont worry about it Steve!" I grabbed the binoculars, which he tried not to give them to me. I snatched them and i looked. My face fell as I saw her.
"Wendy." I whispered. She was laughing. I missed that laugh. I can still hear it. That smile, that touch, that perfume she always wore. I touched the scrunchie that she gave me. The green velvet one. I looked to see she was wearing a green button up shirt, Green, her favorite color.
"Steve?"
"Ill be back." I gave him back the binoculars. I stood up.
"No! Steve! The mission!" I walked up to the table.
Wendys POV
"Ahoy Wendy! Didn't see you there." I jumped and looked up and all my feelings came back. It was Steve. I gasped. "Would you like to set sail on this ocean of flavor with me? I'll be your captain. I'm Steve Harrington." Armani knew about Steve. I told him every detail. I sure didnt forget the hair. When i saw Steve, everything felt like a dream. Like i was the only girl with him.
"Not bad Wendy." Armani whispers and laughed.
"Steve." I whispered. He looked at me. We just stared at each other. I stood up.
"Well what a coincidence." Armani laughs. It was all a set up. "Ill see you later Wendy." Armani waved and left. Steve and I didnt move.
"Wendy." He puffed out. "You look nice." He chuckled.
"You look, sailor-ly." I laughed.
"You havent changed."
"You look good." I sighed.
"You're probably wondering, why am i doing here. Im taking orders." He lied.
"Scoops is right there. Theres no waiters." I caught him. He rubbed his neck. "Its good to see you again. Ive called you. Your parents would answer, especially your father."
"Oh." Dustin came running in. "Scram." Steve said.
"Hey Wendy." Dustin smiled.
"Hey Dustin." I hugged him. "Hows camp?"
"It was good. I got a girlfriend now. Shes hotter than Phoebe Cates." Wait, girlfriend?
"Oh wow, congratulations!" I smiled.
"We can trust her." Dustin said to Steve. Dustin grabbed my hand and took me to scoops. They pulled me into the back.
"Wendy, this is R-"
"Robin!" I smiled.
"Byers!" She smiled back. We gave each other a hug. "Hows summer?"
"Its been boring, man staying home isn't the best idea."
"Wait." Steve interrupts. "You guys know each other?"
"4th period gym class, ms. Bradly." We said Together.
"Great." He nodded. Dustin moved him away and sat me down.
"Its not my fault you dont have any friends dingus." I laughed. Steve looked at me.
"It wasn't even that funny." I lied.
"I trust you okay." Dustin told me.
"Okay?" I was concerned.
"We think theres russians running the mall. When i was trying to get in contact with Suzie." I looked at him. He sighed. "My girlfriend. I intercepted a secret Russian communication. Robin here is cracking the code. What we found is that its coming from here." I laughed. They all looked at me crazy.
"This is serious?" I said and they nodded. I cleared my throat. "You think you have evil nazis plotting against our country, on tape, and you're trying to translate, and might be coming from here?" Dustin nodded. "Sure, I believe it." Steve laughs.
"Seriously?"
"What? I believe in those-" i cut myself off as I remember Robin doesnt know about the demodogs and the upside down.
"Robin, will you give us a second." She left us. "Please, continue."
"I found out that the upside down is real, fought demodogs, so if nazis are real, sure. Im in." I shrugged. Dustin signaled Robin back in.
"Shes in." Dustin smiles.
"100 percent." I smiled at Steve. "Its better than staying at home."
