Prologue - 7 I'm a wizard!? No. You're just a late bloomer.
"YOU HAVE MAGIC!!!?" They shouted in unison, before running to me. I looked at my hand, still freaked out by what I just did.
'How did I do that?...'
"No." I said looking up at them and Deuce gently helped me up to my feet. "That's not possible!.. I can't do that, I don't have magic!!"
"Heck yeah you do! You defeated that ugly monster single handedly!" Ace shouted.
"I did?..." I stared at my hands dumbly.
"Of course you did, we all saw it." Deuce said with a smile.
"W- wait this means we won...We actually won!" Grim shouted, raising his paw in the air and the boys cheered along. I stared blankly at the idiots, couldn't help but to smile at them.
"Hooray!" Deuce cheered, and Ace too. "We did it!"
"Victory high five!" Grim and the boys started giving each other high fives. They're so overjoyed they don't realize how close they are.
"I don't want to ruin your boy power moment, but it seems you're all getting along. That's cute." Their smiles dropped once they realized and backed away from each other.
"Ah! N-no. This is nothing like that!" Deuce exclaimed.
"Y-yeah, yeah! Could you stop saying weird things?" Ace said with a frown and I laughed.
"Haha, okay. I'm only kidding."
"W-we won thanks to my genius!" Grim shouted, crossing his arms. "It's not because we pooled our strength and let you defeat that monster. I said that so you won't feel left out!"
"Um excuse me, left out? I wanna get out, but this?" I pointed at my hand. "It wasn't my intention to do all that, sorry if I stole your kill, Grim!"
"...I guess making excuses is pretty lame, huh?" Ace said and looks at me with a smile that caught me off guard. "I hate to admit it but we won thanks to you."
"...True. We got the magic crystal because you gave us level headed instructions. In the end you saved us with your unique power as well...I'm so relieved you're not hurt." Deuce looks at me with a slight smile.
"Yeah, yeah. We're all relieved that none of us aren't hurt. And seriously worn out and battered. Let's go home." I heard Ace said.
"Oh come on guys, everyone did a good job. We survived so give yourself a good pat on the back. Besides, destroying that monster wasn't my intention. It just happened..." I said looking back at my hand and heard Grim's stomach growled.
"I'm starving from using too much magic...Hmm? What's this?" Grim noticed a black rock from the ground and picked it up.
"Remnants from that monster?" Deuce said, as he examined the rock which Grim held in his paws. "A magic crystal...? But I've never seen one pitch black like coal before."
Grim stares at it for a while before taking small sniffs from it. "This thing smells really good..." Ace and I just stared in shock.
"No way!" Ace exclaimed in disgust. Grim only smiled and brought the rock close to his drooling mouth.
"This has to be candy the monster was hiding! Ooooh, I can't hold back! Time to dig in!!" Grim put the whole thing in his mouth and ate it.
"Oh my gosh, Grim! Spit it out! Don't eat shit from the ground!" I immediately grabbed Grim and started shaking him. "Uuhh!!!!"
The boys watched in horror as I shook him rapidly, trying to get him to spit out the rock. "Hey, is he alright!?" Deuce asked.
"Don't shake him like that!" Ace yells at me. "Aaah. That's why you don't eat things off the ground."
"You guys are being dramatic! Grim fine, I just need him to spit it out!" I stopped and held him out to see he's okay. "Hey Grim, are you..."
Grim's eyes wided once it settled down in his stomach and I almost dropped him when he got all excited. "D-DELICIOUS!!"
"What the fuck?" I said, while still holding him and the boys were in shock. "WHAT!?"
Grim held his cheeks with his eyes gleaming of joy as he started describing the flavour taste. "It's full-bodied but also rich, with a aromatic sweetness that blooms in my mouth...Like a whole field of flowers in my mouth!"
"Bleegghhh!" Ace gets gross out. "Monsters really do have different tastes from us."
"...I guess so. But more than that...Most people wouldn't even put a mystery object in their mouth without a thought." Deuce said.
"You guys are trippin balls, Grim fine see? He's not dead, look at him." We all looked at Grim once I put him down, and he was laughing with a smile.
"Gahahaha! Tasty, tasty! Don't worry, my stomach isn't weak like yours."
"Don't come crawling to me when you get sick later." Ace said to Grim. I shook my head and smiled.
"Switching gears, let's get this magic crystal to the headmaster." After Deuce said that, I stopped in my tracks.
"Should I inform Dire Crowley about this?" I asked.
"Hm?" Ace was a little confused at first, but quickly remembers the whole magic incident that I did with my hand.
"Ah! That's right. What you did back there was pretty amazing, but it was sure bright! I couldn't open my eyes. Say, can you do it again?" He asked me, I shook my head.
"I don't know. Like I said, it just happened." I repeated, Deuce looks over to me. "I think it's best to tell the headmaster about it once we get back."
"Okay, just hope this doesn't mean anything..." I nodded, then we all headed back home with the magic crystal in our grasp and new information to tell Dire Crowley about the incident that happened.
» Mirror Chamber »
When we came back, we were greeted by the headmaster who'd been standing in front of the mirror and somewhat looked surprised.
"Eh!? You really went to Dwarf's Mine to find a magic crystal!?"
"HUH!?" We exclaimed in unison looking at the headmaster.
"I really didn't think...You'd not only go but then come back with a magic crystal in hand." Dire Crowley said. "I quietly completed the paperwork for your expulsion."
"Nnga! The nerve of this guy!" Grim frowned. "While we were off fighting some crazy monster! We almost died getting that magic crystal!" Dire Crowley gives us a confused look.
"A monster?"
"Yes! There was a monster there! It was super gross and crazy strong, it was awful! Freckles here somewhat used her magic to save us!" Ace exclaimed, as he pointed at me.
"Yeah..." I mumbled.
"What? Blair using magic? Let's continue this matter in my office and could you explain in more detail?" Dire Crowley asked us, we nodded and followed the headmaster to his office.
When we entered inside, the office was huge and there were seven frames with each different picture floating behind the desk. The pictures showed each of the great seven, like the statues from main street I saw.
"Now, please continue."
After explaining the entire story to Dire Crowley, he was left surprised but was shocked by the incident we told him. "Hoh hoohh. A mysterious monster living in the coal mine. The four of you worked together to defeat it?"
I nodded. "Mhm."
"But yet, you all nearly died trying to protect the magic crystal? Then Blair here defeated it and has no idea how she activated her magic?"
I nodded again. "Mhm. Yep. Like I said, it just happened. It's like my body knew it was in danger and boom! The impossible happened."
"Uh, yeah...We didn't really work together..." Ace mumbled, I stood next to him and elbowed his side roughly, making him jerk up. He looks at me with a glare. "What was that for?..."
I shrugged and ignored Ace while Deuce sighed, shaking his head. "It was more like our goals were aligned..."
We all stopped when the headmaster began sobbing all of sudden. As I spot tears leaking from his mask. "Ooooooh....OOOOOHHHH!!!!! OOOOOOHHHHHH!!!!"
"What's with this guy? Why is an adult bursting into tears like that!?" Grim shouted, getting weird out.
"I have no idea....Maybe we broke him emotionally." I said, as Dire Crowley started talking again while sobbing through his words.
"In all these years that I've been headmaster...For the day to come that students from Night Raven College go hand in hand to face and defeat their enemy!"
"Hand in hand?" I questioned, a slight smile formed on my lips when something naughty crawls into my mind.
"I don't recall holding hands but my own. These boys probably, they were arguing back and forth nonstop. They couldn't get enough of each other's Bromance." I pointed at them.
"What!?" Deuce shouted once he heard me. "I wasn't holding this guy's hand!"
"Eh!? I would never do that, gross! What's wrong with you and stop smiling like that. It's creeping me out!" Ace turns his attention away from me, and looks at the headmaster.
"And headmaster, how old are you!?"
Dire Crowley wiped the tears away under his mask and regained his posture. "I am overwhelmed with emotion. This incident confirms it."
He then turns his attention towards me. I stopped smiling when he did. "Blair. Without a doubt, you have a talent as a beast tamer! That's not all, you also have magic potential in you! I believed you're a late bloomer."
"Whoa, wait a minute. Beast tamer? A late Bloomer!? Don't you find all this strange for me to suddenly have magic?" I asked him.
"Indeed, and all students of Night Raven College are budding wizards called here by the Dark Mirror. However, they are superior class that makes them prideful and egotistical people. That had not even the slightest inkling to work with others. Making many of them selfish and self-centered." Dire Crowley explained.
"You're really not saying anything good." Grim mumbled. I agreed with him. "Yeah, how does any of that relate to me having magic!? Like the so-called Dark Mirror said himself. "I sense no magic in this one" He says, well, there you go. The Dark Mirror can't read. He needs his glasses."
"Don't start blaming the Dark Mirror, it wasn't his fault. It's just that you're a late Bloomer." Dire Crowley said. I frowned at him.
"Yeah, but still!" I shouted, making them all jump back a little. "None of this shit makes any sense to me...I just wanna know why.."
Dire Crowley slowly approached me placing his both hands on my shoulders. Making me look up at him to meet his yellow eyes. "First of all, language. You can use magic. Like you told us, you're unable to perform it nor how to. This my dear, is a rare opportunity for you to learn to control it."
"But...this is an all boys school." I mumbled. "Besides, I wanna go home."
"I know, but listen carefully Blair. You can give instructions to wizards and get them to cooperate. While you can still learn to control your magic and I promised to return you home, didn't I?" I saw his smile underneath his mask.
"And perhaps that mediocrity is exactly what this school needs right now!"
"He's not saying anything nice isn't he!?" Ace shouted.
"I have no doubt that your existence is essential to the future of this academy. So says my educator-senses. Trappola. Spade. Along with rescinding your expulsion I shall give you the qualifications to attend Night Raven College as a student!"
"Eeh!?" The four of us looked at Dire Crowley in shock.
"The only girl in all boy's school with magic problems. Trying to find a way back home...That will make a legit otome game." I mumbled, stroking my chin. "I'm game."
"Huh!?..." The boys looked at me, and Grim too. "Was Freckles talking to herself just now?"
"So, I'm a student now? In this school with them?" I pointed at the Ace and Deuce, including Grim. Dire Crowley nodded.
"Yes. For I am exceedingly gracious. But there is one condition. Since you have magic now, becoming a wizard will take longer for you. Being a late bloomer, yes, maybe....Probably won't be able to complete lessons in time. That is why, Grim."
Dire Crowley looks over to Grim. "You have proven to me that you possess enough talent to become a wizard. Therefore, I shall allow the two of you to enroll together, as one student."
"Ffgyaa! I...I can go to this academy too?...Not as a handyman, but as a student?" Grim said with a hint of excitement in his voice.
"Yes. Provided that! You don't ever let an incident like yesterday occur again! Do we have an agreement?" Dire Crowley asked him.
Grim was overwhelmed with emotion, he started to cry. I couldn't help but to carry him and give him a hug. "Ffgnaa...Ffgnaa...We-we can..."
"It's okay Grim, we're in this together so, let's do our best!" I smiled, when he raised his little paws in the air. While I held him in my arms.
"Ffgnnaaaaaa!! I did it!! I mean, we did it!" Grim and I gave each other high five.
"Well then." Dire Crowley said, getting our attention back to him. "I shall give the symbol of your status as a student of Night Raven College, a magic crystal to Grim."
A light purple gemstone magically appeared on Grim's striped bow tie. "Woah! A magic crystal!!?"
"Wow I dig the new look, Grim. You're twice as awesome now." I said, as I put him down to the floor next to my feet.
"It is the norm for students to have their magic crystal in the form of a "magical pen" but, you wouldn't be able to grip it in your paws, right? It's a special custom. Ahh...I pay attention to even the smallest details! Aren't I too gracious?" Dire Crowley smiled.
"So that's what they're called..."magic pens" so technically it's a wand?"
"No, no it's not." Dire Crowley said to me. "Um, it kinda is...?" I said.
"I did it!! I'm so cool! I got my own special magic crystal collar!" Grim cheered once more as he did a little dance.
"He's isn't listening at all..." Dire Crowley said as he looked at me. "Do you understand, Blair? As you can see, Grim is not accustomed to human society. It's up to you to take the rein and supervise him to prevent from causing anymore trouble."
"Aha! Look at you." Ace said with a smile as Deuce stood next to him. "School's just started and you're already a supervisor?"
"I see. There's only the two of you in your dorm...So if you've been entrusted with supervising Grim, that makes you a supervisor."
"Yeah, I guess?" I said, and frown at Ace when I heard him laugh.
"Pfft...Isn't that unheard of? For there to be a supervisor student who can't use magic properly."
"You have a death wish Ace?" I said to him with a dark tone of my voice.
"Hey! I was only joking, don't start threatening me okay? But, hey it's nice. It's cool. A supervisor student who has hidden magic that she doesn't know how to use!"
I took off my shoe and threw it at him but missed his face by a few inches. As it went by Ace and hit the floor. "H-hey! Knock it off, I was only joking supervisor!
"Oh? I missed." I said, and walked over to grab my shoe.
"Now everyone calm down. Children these days...Hmm, wait...A supervisor. I do have a work request, and having a title makes it very convenient. This is wonderful!" Dire Crowley said happily.
"Supervisor!" I jumped a little when Dire Crowley called me. "Yeah?"
"Here. I entrust you with this." Dire Crowley took something out from his desk cabinet and gives it to me. I took it and started examining it.
"Uh...You're entrusting me with a toy?"
"What? A toy!? Don't be silly! This is no toy, this is nicknamed the "Ghost Camera"."
"Oh...So I'm taking pictures of ghosts then?"
"Yes- N-No!" Dire Crowley corrected himself. "It's not a camera you should be playing with! Please, I need you be serious Blair."
"But I am being serious, you're not telling me exact full detail about this thing."
"It's not a "thing" its a Ghost Camera." Dire Crowley corrected me.
"Ah, I think my grandma told me about that. It is a super old magic tool right?" Ace said, looking at camera in my hands.
"It is not "super old"...Ahem." Dire Crowley stopped to clear his throat. "It's true this may have been invented during your great grandmother's, or great great grandmother's time. There is a very special spell cast on it-"
"It's cursed!?" I interrupted him.
"No! It's not cursed, please let me finish. Now, where was I? Oh yes, it not only captures the subjects form, but also a part of their soul."
"A part of their soul?..." Deuce questioned.
"We call this, "Memory: A fragment of remembrance. Furthermore, the most interesting part of this magic camera is that the souls of the photographer and the photographed become deeply connected, and the memory in the photo comes jumping out!"
"Wait..what comes jumping out? It better not be a jump scare..." I mumbled.
"What? No. Depending on how close the subject and the photographer are the picture could move like a video, or bring to life the situation in the photo. Fascinating right?" Dire Crowley finished explaining.
"Bring the photo to life? It's like a ghost photograph!" Deuce exclaimed.
"Yes. Therefore it's called a "ghost camera". They say it was made before the time of videos for when people wanted to leave behind vivid memories...Spade is correct, in the past people would scream "ghost!" in surprise when the memory came jumping out. They were paralyzed with fear at the thought of having a photo taken with this camera."
"A camera for freaking people out..." Ace sighed.
"Hmm..." I brought the camera close to my face and pretended to take a photo of them. "GHOST!"
Dire Crowley and the boys all jumped after I shouted. I laughed so hard, I couldn't hold the ghost camera right. "Ahaha!...I'm sorry. I just wanna try it to see its true...hehehe." They were staring at me with their glares.
"That wasn't funny..." Ace mumbled, Deuce shook his head. "It's wasn't at all.."
"Blair, I mean Supervisor...Please take photos of Grim and other students to leave behind many memories of your lives in this academy. And, please don't you ever do that again. You nearly gave me a heart attack!..." Dire Crowley said, placing his hand over his heart.
"La~lalala." Grim comes dancing back towards us. "Take a lot of cool photos of me~"
"Pfft..Okay, I'll start and go paparazzing everyone in this school. Click, click, click!" I pretended to take photos.
Dire Crowley let's out a sigh and starts to question himself. "Did I made a right choice entrusting her with it?......Well, ahem. Especially, always make sure to get "Memories" when someone steps out of line. It's a most suitable way to report to me, Understood?"
"Aye aye, Dire Crowley. I will report any suspicious act in this school." I said, raising my hand to salute.
"Wonderful! Please keep an eye on your surroundings and take memories as the "supervisor". Please, don't fool around with it."
"I know, I know. Take pictures of important events and report anything that looks suspicious. Got it. See? I know my way-aahhh!..." I tried to do a graceful twirl but tripped over my own feet and fell to the floor. "Haha...I wonder why, my shoe wasn't tied right."
Dire Crowley sighed, seemly regretting the whole situation he put upon me. While Deuce and Ace had sweat drops on their foreheads, and Grim just laughed at me.
"Ah...Well, it's already late. Let's save the detailed conversation for tomorrow. Return to your dormitories, everyone."
"Pardon our intrusion." Deuce bowed before leaving. After finishing tying my shoe, I got up and followed the boys out. Leaving the exhausted headmaster to himself.
"What a day..." He sighed.
