Prologue -4 Cheeky Mates!
At the end of the match, Grim stood completely exhausted after using all his fire magic on Dire Crowley as he changed back into his natural form. "Hee-haaa...How about that!" Grim panted with a bit of energy he has left.
"I can't believe...there is a person who can command monsters." Dire Crowley was looking at us with a hint of amazement in his voice. "Hmmm...Actually, my teacher-senses were telling me since the uproar during the entrance ceremony."
"And that is?...." I asked, wondering what he's gonna say next.
"That you have talent as an animal or wild beast trainer, but...No matter how..." He starts muttering something under his breath while Grim and I just stare at him. Not having the slightest clue what he's saying.
"Uh..Hey." I interrupted him from his thoughts. "I know this may sound weird but, could you possibly let Grim stay here with me?" I asked, as they both looked at me in slight shock.
"Excuse me, what now? A monster?" Dire Crowley said, shaking his head in disbelief. Giving it a second thought and Grim murmured in awe. "You.."
"Please!" I begged with both of my hands clasped together. Enlarging my eyes at him sadly. "Please with a cherry on top!" I begged more, and finally Dire Crowley gave in. Letting out a sigh of defeat.
"Hah...It can't be helped. Alright."
"Hmm!? Really!?" Grim shouted happily with gleam sparking in his eyes.
"However." Dire Crowley continued. "I can't simply allow someone let alone a monster into the school who wasn't selected by the Dark Mirror." Grim's happy smile just immediately dropped to the level of disappointment. As Dire Crowley then turns his full attention towards me. "Also, I can't let you be a freeloader here until you return home to your own world."
"I have a feeling you'll say something like that, well...I can't just stay here doing nothing.."
"Well...talk about short-lived joy..." Grim complained.
"Listen until the end." He said to Grim and me, then explains further details. "Concerning the fact that your soul was called here, the school has to take responsibility as the owners of the Dark Mirror. For the time being, you'll be permitted to stay in this dormitory for now. But, other necessities you will have to provide for yourself, seeing as you have nothing to your name, fufu, here is my proposition."
I gulped, waiting nervously wondering what he'll say next with his glowing yellow eyes staring through mine, and he noticed.
"No need to fret, I'll have you do maintenance and odd jobs around the campus. From what I can see, you're pretty decent at cleaning." He mentions the clean lounge I've done, which still needs more work.
"But it still needs cleaning..." I murmured, he didn't hear me and continued.
"How would you two like to become the 'handyman' of the school? You'll be able to research going home or study whatever you desire in the library. For I am gracious. However! Only after your is done. Dire Crowley said, offering us a job.
"Eeeh!? I'm not okay with that!" Grim shouted, not agreeing to it and started complaining. "I wanna wear that fancy uniform and be a student!"
"It's fine if you're not unsatisfied. I'll simply toss you out again." Dire Crowley warned but with a calm smile on his lips. Leaving Grim zero options, then he agreed but was not showing any interest.
"Fygnaa!? I get it! I just have to do it. Just do it!"
Unlike Grim, I accepted his offer with a nod. "Understood." If this is the only way to get back home, then I may have to do this to pass the time.
"Wonderful. Then you two starting tomorrow, endeavor to be the best handyman at Night Raven College!" Once Dire Crowley said that, he gave me my supper and left. "Eat up. Sleep well, you may need it for tomorrow." He left the door, and shut it behind him.
"I may as well share this supper with you." I looked at Grim before heading back to the red sofa to eat. "I guess you don't mind eating cold supper huh?" I sat down with him and started dividing bits of food from the tray. So we'll have the same amount to eat.
"This stinks! I wanna be a student so bad and do awesome magic, not being some handyman..." Grim said sadly, lowering his fire ears, and scoops up a piece of mashed potatoes covered in gravy then eats it. "Ghaa...This tastes horrible! I wish I was eating a can of tuna..."
I watched him spit it out from his mouth looking away in disgust. "I know, I'm sorry about that. I wish I was eating something more pleasant too. But this has to do for tonight." I took a piece of diced carrot from mine and gulped it down.
"Ggyaaa!?" Grim screamed when the entrance door suddenly slammed open, startling him off the sofa to the floor.
"Who's that?" He asked while getting back on the red sofa.
"I'll see-" I placed the tray down and got up to see Dire Crowley come walking back in. "Ah! Sorry, I almost forgot. I believe this belongs to you." He said, revealing my phone in his hand after grabbing it from his coat pocket.
I gasped seeing it still intact and took my phone from him, holding it safety close to my chest. "Thank you! Where did you find it?"
"I did some investigating in the Mirror chamber and found it inside the coffin you were in, but unfortunately I haven't seen your headphones. Well, at least you have something. Now, goodbye!" Dire Crowley said leaving us again.
"Hmph! Where's my can of tuna?" I heard Grim say from the sofa, I turned on my phone and waited to see if the system was still intact as it appeared to be. Then the screen lit up showing my apps and the battery bar was 72 percent left.
"Well, let's get some sleep before it gets any late." I said to Grim while going back to the sofa and grabbed the half eaten food on the tray, and dumped it out the window. We both went up stairs and found a decent room in good condition and did a little cleaning up before going to bed.
"That should do it." I said, looking around the room as Grim jumped on the bed and laid at the end of it.
"Stupid cleaning I don't wanna..." He muttered, wrapping his tail around him and slowly dozing to sleep. I gently lifted the blanket not to wake him and crawled into bed. Turning to my side, I stared at the window and closed my eyes.
"Calanthe...Calanthe..."
Not even a few minutes, I heard a voice repeated with a soft whisper. I gasped, sitting up looking around the room to find nothing but Grim still sound asleep. It left me confused and for some reason the voice sounded familiar. "Okay... that was fucking weird, I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that." I said laying back down again and tried to sleep.
Long hours passed, the upper limb of the sun greets us in a clear morning.
Slowly and tired, I uncover my face. I blink, close my eyes, and blink again. Streaks of sunlight penetrate the window and blind me. I sit up, drag my feet off the bed, and rub my knuckles onto my eyes. I stretch my arms above my head and yawn. "Well....Today's the day."
"Heeheehee, don't you two have to be up to clean the school." I froze before turning rapidly to see the tall ghost.
"You again." I yawned again, not bothered by the ghost. "Don't tell me, you and your ghost pals are back, right?"
Grim started snoring and talking in his sleep. Laying on his back all cuddly. "Unnnn...Munyaaa....Five more minutes..."
Then two other ghosts appeared, hovering over Grim's sleeping form. "Laze about too long and you'll never wake up." The small one said.
"Just like us! Heeheehee!" The fat one laughed as he woke Grim.
"Ffgya!? It's those ghosts again! Hey Freckles!" He exclaimed, pointing his paw at them. "I know Grim, I can see them." I sighed.
"Are you all going to be living here?" The tall ghost asked, and I nodded with a yes. "You're gonna get pranked. Kekeke!" He laughs.
"Shoot. We'll get rid of you eventually!" Grim gritted his fangs, but the three ghosts disappeared after we heard footsteps approaching from the hallway. The door creaked open with Dire Crowley greeting us.
"Good morning, you two. Did you sleep well?" He asked us, taking a step in the room.
"I was all sprawled out then I fell out the button! Just how ramshackle did you let this place get?" Grim said to Dire Crowley, then continued. "Then ghosts woke me up, this is the worst!"
"I didn't slept well either..." I managed to say, still feeling dozy from waking up, and last night's voice I heard. Dire Crowley just smiled.
"Even though you just got tossed over from another world you can still be cheeky, wonderful! I came to speak to you about your work for today." He stops and looks at the robe I still have on from yesterday's charade. "Ah, let me fix that."
With the snap of his finger, the robe magically disappeared. Replacing them with my normal clothes I had on before. "Whoa... What just happened?"
"I simply change your clothes to your original. I can't allow you to wear the ones from yesterday. Now, come you two." Dire Crowley directed us out from the room and left to lounge. Explaining our job for today as Grim had a bitter face.
"Today, you two are to clean the campus... But the campus is quite large. Cleaning it all without magic would be impossible. So I'd like you to clean Main street from Main Gate to the library, understood?"
"Yes, sir. We understand." I saluted him as he was the first to leave the Ramshackle Dorm before we can. Dire Crowley stopped at the steps, and looked over to us. "Please watch Grim closely so he doesn't cause a scene like yesterday!"
"Okay I got it." I nodded. Dire Crowley began striding away. "Good! I'm counting on you, Blair. You have permission to have lunch in the school cafeteria. Take care of your work enthusiastically."
By time we left the Ramshackle Dorm, Dire Crowley was already gone. "Tsk...Noway I'm doing any cleaning, I wanna go to class and, bang! Boom, boom, boom! Use a bunch of awesome spells." Grim said, making explosion sounds.
We continued heading to the school with Grim following me closely, I smiled. "We can go to the library after we finish cleaning up, okay? Maybe we can research how you can become a great magician, huh, huh~" I wiggled my eyebrows, trying to cheer him up. He just muttered and rolled his eyes.
"Fine, be like that." I rolled my eyes.
Once we arrived at Main Street, we saw seven statues all lined up perfectly on both sides of the street. Four on the left, and three on the right. It had an impressive scenery.
"Uwaaah~ Amazing. So this is Main Street." Grim looks at it with awe. "I didn't get a good look yesterday but what's with these statues? All seven of them look pretty scary."
"Go look in the mirror Grim, you'll see something scary."
"Wha!?...Shut up Freckles!"
I started sweeping the dirt into a pile leaving the garbage for Grim to burn up but he stopped. "Whoa...This granny looks especially snobby."
"Grim. Does it look like I fucking care? Now, come on. Let's focus more on cleaning than looking at old grannies." I told him.
"You don't know about the Queen of Hearts?" Someone intruded upon us. We both looked to see a boy with messy, dark orange hair and has red eyes. Over his right eye, he has a red patch shaped like a heart.
"Queen of Hearts? Is she important?" Grim asked the guy and he began explaining the origins of the Queen of Hearts to him.
"In the past she was the queen who lived in the Rose maze. She was someone who valued rules and discipline above all, strict in all things from the march of the card soldiers to the color of rose bushes."
I stared at the statue that he was mentioning. "It was a land of madness where all submit to her rule. Why you ask? Because otherwise it was off with your head!"
"That's terrifying!" Grim shouted. I rolled my eyes as I swept.
"It's cool! I like it. Nobody would listen to a queen who's just nice all the time right?"
"I supposed. A strong leader is better. By the way, who are you?" Grim asked.
"I'm Ace. A fresh-faced first year. Nice to meetcha." The boy smiled.
"I am Grim. A genius who'll become the greatest magician." Grim introduces himself then points at me. "The dimwit over here is Freckles. My henchman."
Ace looked at me with his arms crossed. "You've got an odd sounding name."
'Says the boy named after a fucking card..'
"Uh, don't believe what Grim says okay? One, I'm nobody's henchman. I'm my own person. Two, Freckles is not my name. What kind of person names their kid Freckles? Unless it's a pet, but my real name Blair, nice to meet you I guess?"
Ace approached me where I stood with the broom in my hand, and shook my other one with his. Looking at me with a goofy smile printed on his face. "Nice to meet you Blair with a boy's name, I'm Ace."
I immediately snatched my hand away. "I know, I'm Blair." I said sarcastically.
"Hey, Ace. The lion over there with the scar, are they famous?"
"Of course!" Ace turns his attention towards Grim and starts talking about the lion statue. "This is the King of Beasts who rules the Savannah. However, he was not born to be king, but he took the throne through effort and elaborate planning. After becoming king, he even allowed the hyenas to live in his kingdom without discrimination."
"Ooooh." Grim stared at the statue in awe. "I guess he was a rock not held captive by his status!"
"Ooooh, interesting. Can we go back to work now?" Grim frowned at me and shouted.
"Hold on a minute!..." Then Grim's attention grew as he spotted a statue of an octopus woman holding a contract in her hand. "Who's the lady with octopus legs?" He asked once more.
'Arggghhhhhhhhh.'
»After the whole statue explaining and shit...»
"They're all so cool~...Unlike a certain raccoon." Ace's smile turned into a nasty one, it left us confused.
"Huh!?" Grim and I both looked at him in unison as Ace started laughing all of a sudden.
"Pfft... ahaha! I can't bear it anymore! Ahahahaha!" He was laughing so hard he held his stomach and looked at us to find Grim and I frowning at him. "Aren't you the guys who went crazy at the entrance ceremony?"
I stepped forward and stood not too far from Ace. Looking straight at him while clenching both of my fists aside. "Yeah what about it?" I answered.
"You were summoned by the Dark Mirror even though you can't use magic." Ace wore his cocky smile and looked over to Grim. "And you, monster, weren't called but still trespassed. Yaahh, it took everything I had not to lose it at the ceremony."
Grim snapped. "Wha!? You're a rude one! Rude as Freckles here!?"
"Oh? But now you're not allowed in and regulated to janitor? Haha, how lame." Ace said, continuing to provoke us.
"What!? "You wanna see lame? This janitor will show you lame, not after I bash your skull to the ground!" I said, and Grim growled.
"Nyanyooo...."
"Ooh~ so scary. Should I be scared?" He smirked at us. "On top of that, you guys don't even know about the Great seven. How ignorant can you guys be? I recommend you guys going back to kindergarten before coming to Night Raven College." Ace says with a laugh.
"Gunuhnuhnuh...." Grim continued to growl more, as I started pulling up my selves. Ready for the big come.
"This boy is asking for it....At this rate I'm gonna kill him...." I mumbled, feeling a vein popping on my head. Staring daggers into his soul.
"Hey I thought I'd just mess with you guys for a bit, but you really blew my expectations away. Unlike you two, I actually have classes to attend. Keep this school squeaky clean, you two!" Ace said, as he started walking away from us.
"Oh, that boy gonna have a little taste of his own medicine. It's called an ass whooping!" I cracked my fists together, watching him leave.
" I know right!? That jerk! He's just gonna say that and leave! I'm pissed now! Fuunnaaaah!" Grim released a large amount of blue fire at Ace. Stopping him from his tracks.
"Hey! Watch it! What're you doing!"
"That's what you get for making fun of me! I'm gonna light up the fire-head of yours!" Grim smirked. I laughed.
"Hahaha! Nice one Grim, you should've "lightened it up". It'll go real nice with that stupid smile of his."
Ace snapped. "Very funny. Fire-head, huh? You've really got guts picking a fight with me. You too. I'll turn you into a puffy, little toy-poodle!" He declared, pulling out his wand.
"Fyyygaaa!!!" Grim launches another set of flame at him, but misses as Ace dodge it with ease.
"Uh-ho, gotta watch out. Take that!" He casted a wind spell that messed up Grim's fire. "Hahaha!"
"Fygga!? This guy is blowing wind all over the place! My fire is all twisted up!"
"Then allow me to break his legs!" I was too angry to notice the students nearby that saw us.
"What's happening? A fight?" One student said, and the other one shouted. "Yeah! Get'em!"
"Want me to get you!? Beat it!" I shouted at them then I turned my attention back to Grim and Ace.
"A flimsy little fire like that won't hit me."
"What? You better be ready! Eat this!!" Grim shouted, as he fired another at Ace but failed again.
"And just change the trajectory with wind like....that!" When Ace deflected the fire's attack, it went towards the Queen of Hearts statue and burnt it. "Aaaaaaaaah! Crap! The Queen of Hearts statue is charred!!"
"It's because you're blowing the fire around! Just let me fry you!" Grim shouted.
"You really think someone is just gonna let you fry them?"
"Well, it looks like the Queen of Hearts isn't so lovely to look at anymore." I said sarcastically.
"What!? What kind of person would say that!? What's wrong with you!" Ace said while approaching me and came to my face.
"What's wrong with me? Maybe that's my question to ask you, what's wrong with you!? Coming at us like you're all good and that!" I poked his chest roughly, pushing him of balance.
"Oh yeah? Says the girl who can't use magic!" Ace pushes me back.
'Ah, shit. Here we go again...'
"Arrgh! I'll kill you!!!" I threw myself at him and dropped his ass to the ground and started struggling him. Grim just stood there and watched. "Get him Blair, get him!"
"Ah!! You're crazy!..Get off me!" Ace tried to push me off him.
"Enough!!! Just what's going on here!" Dire Crowley came stomping through a crowd of students that saw the whole thing. Witnessing Ace getting his butt beat by a girl.
"Guh! Headmaster..." Ace stopped fighting back once he saw the headmaster approaching us. Grim held up his little paws feeling terrified. "He's gonna tie us up with the "lash of love"! Let's get gotta here!"
"Hm?" I was the last to look up and saw the headmaster staring down at me. I gave him a slight smile while remaining on top of Ace, still holding him by his collar. "Hi Dire Crowley, what's up?..."
Without a warning he lifted me up, separating me from Ace and gave me a small lovetap to my hand. "Ooww!! The fucking hurts!"
"Language young lady!" He shouted at me, like a father would to their child.
Grim and Ace tried sneaking away from the scene, but failed as Dire Crowley used his whip on the boys. "Ooowww!!" Ace yelped, and Grim too. "Ffgyaa! Hurts just as much the second day in a row!"
"This is my Lash of Love! It'll be another hundred years before you can outrun me! I told you just yesterday to "not cause any trouble", didn't I? Then you go and char the statues of the Great Seven! I very much would like to see you expelled." I heard Dire Crowley say to Ace.
"Wait! Not that!"
Then Dire Crowley immediately looks at me. "And you, this is not how you supervise Grim. You were supposed to keep him away from trouble, not joining him! I expected you to be the reliable one, guess I was wrong."
"I'm sorry, it was really stupid of me for not stopping it." I looked away from the headmaster's gaze and felt ashamed.
"My goodness...children these days. You, what's your grade and name?" Dire Crowley looks at Ace.
"Ace Trappola, first year."
"Then, Trappola, Grim and Blair. As punishment I order the three of you to wash 100 windows around campus!" The three of us look at him in shock.
"Nyaa!? It's all because this joker was making fun of us!" Grim shouted.
"Eeeh!? Me, too?" Ace points at himself. I rolled my eyes at him.
"Yeah, no shit Sherlock."
"Language! And yes, most definitely! After school, meet in the cafeteria. Understood?" Dire Crowley said, giving us a warning look. I nodded. "Yes sir..."
"Fiiine..." Ace said as well, and Grim too. "Nothing but misery since yesterday!"
