Prologue -2 Blair's dream
I'm starting to believe this dream is actually real, that guy in a weird mask called Dire Crowley and a talking raccoon I've encountered. It's crazy and none of it makes sense at all. How does magic come to exist in this world than ours? All I remember is going to bed after watching movies with mom, I fell asleep and woke up here in this weird place.
"Mom..." I mumbled sadly, feeling both homesick and insecure. I definitely feel my throbbing heartbeat ready to collapse, along with my tired body. I squeezed my eyes shut thinking of mom, I needed her here to ease my anxiety level.
Unfortunately, my anxiety increased as I could hear the voices echoing down the hall. Coming from the entrance ceremony where all the students were gathered. I gulped as we stood by the doorway.
"Is that all the new students dorm assignments?" A voice spoke up. "Listen up new students. Here in Heartslabyul, I am the rules. Break that rule and it's off with your head."
"Uuugghh." Another voice yawned, as he stretched his arms above his head and looked terribly bored. "The stuffy ceremony is finally over? We're going back to the dorm. Savanaclaws, follow me."
The other one smiled, applauding the new students. "To the new students, congratulations on entering this academy. Enjoy your life here to the fullest. As the dormitory leader of Octovinelle, I will support you to the best of my ability."
"By the way, where did the dean go?" A different voice asked, wondering where the principal went. "He flew out right in the middle of the ceremony."
"Abandoning his post.." Someone said, with a slight disappointment in their voice.
"Did he get a stomachache or something?" A student guessed.
I stood by the door as I watched Dire Crowley march right in with a frown formed underneath his mask, with a mad anime mark appearing on his head. "Not at all!" He shouted, surprising a whole crowd of students.
"Ah, he's here." The Heartslabyul leader said, sounding a bit surprised.
Dire Crowley just sighed, shaking his head in disbelief and faced the crowd of students. "I cannot believe you all. We were missing one new student so I went to find them." He explained to everyone, and looked over his shoulder towards me."Come now, don't be shy." He gestured to me to step out, I hesitated at first but obeyed and moved forward.
Anxiety stirred as I felt dozens of eyes glued on to me while I approached where Dire Crowley was standing. With Grim in his grasp. "You are the only one yet to be assigned a dormitory. I shall watch over your raccoon."
I looked down at Grim, who was still struggling to escape and returned my gaze to the principal. "But he's not my-"
"No buts! just step in front of the Dark Mirror." He instructed me to do so, I sighed in defeat and approached the mirror in front of us. I stood in front of it as its dark empty eyes studied me deeply. "State thy name." It demanded.
"Blair Waltz." I answered.
"Blair..." It said my name, the mirror continued to stare at me sharply. "The shape of thy soul is...I do not know."
"Huh?" I blinked a couple of times with a sweat on my forehead.
"Come again?" Dire Crowley looked at the Dark Mirror confused.
"I sense not a spark of magic from this one. The color, the shape, all are nothing. Therefore, they're suited for no dormitory." The Dark Mirror spoked before its face disappeared.
The whole crowd began to murmur among themselves in disbelief, as some were still looking at me and others were snickering about it. I stood completely still with my head held low, as the hood covered my face. Feeling a surge of anger boiling through me. It's just like the orphanage all over again, I despise this feeling so much. I want to run away but I can't.
"An Ebony carriage would absolutely never go to meet someone who can't use magic! In 100 years there has not once been a mistake in the student selection." Dire Crowley said, stuck in his thoughts as Grim finally slipped away. Removing the tape from his lips.
"Mghmgh...Pah! Then I'll take their place!" Grim shouted willingly.
"Stay right there! Raccoon!" I heard Dire Crowley say to Grim.
"Unlike that dumb human, I can use magic! Let me in the school instead!" Grim smirked, raising his little paw in the air. I felt an urge to struggle that furball.
"Okay that's it you little shit!" I shouted. "You're starting to get on my nerves!"
Grim doesn't care what I say at this point, he just hissed at me. "Shut up freckles! If you need proof! I'll show you right now!" With that, he releases an amount of blue flames in the Mirror chamber. "Nnnaaah!!"
"Gyaaa!!?" I stumbled back on my feet as the flames almost devoured me. "Grr...Okay Grim you asked for it!" I started chasing after him.
"Hehehe! You're no match for me dumb human!" Grim smirked.
"Everyone, get down!" The Heartslabyul leader shouted at everyone to take cover, but one student got his certain butt burnt.
"Waaaah! Hot, hot, hot! My butt's on fire!" He panicked, trying to put out the fire.
"At this rate the school will be a sea of fire! Somebody help Blair to catch that raccoon!" Dire Crowley ordered one of the students to aid me. The Savanaclaw leader didn't seem to care about the whole situation, and remained still. "Che! Suck ups."
"Hmm? Aren't you good at hunting?" The Pomefiore leader said to him. "Doesn't it look like a nice, plump snack?"
"Why me? I don't care. Do it yourself." The leader Savanaclaw growled, watching me chase after Grim.
The Octovinelle leader appeared among his group, approaching the principal."Mr. Crowley, please leave it to me. I'm sure the others couldn't stop harassing the poor creature, so I will take it upon myself." He smiled.
"Hmm, hey, could someone put out the fire on my butt already!?"
The same student who got his butt burnt earlier exclaimed.
"ARE YOU ALL EVEN LISTENING!?" Dire Crowley frowned. "GO HELP BLAIR!"
"If it's just catching the stupid raccoon, why can't you go help the new student tech."
"How many times do I have to tell you, I'm not a raccoon!! I'm the Great Grim that will become the greatest magician ever, that is me!" Grim said while running away from me.
"NOBODY CARES RACCOON! GET BACK HERE--Ah!" I screamed, as I tripped on my own footing. Before my face could meet the floor, a pair of arms caught me. I looked up to see the Octovinelle leader, Azul."You should be more careful where you run, you'll hurt yourself."
I felt an icy chill coming behind that smile of his. I just nodded as he helped me up to my feet and looked over to the Heartslabyul leader. "It certainly has moxie, care to help me Riddle?"
"I can't overlook those who break the rules." Riddle gave me a sharp look before looking away. "Now, let's hurry and get this over with."
Everyone watches Azul and Riddle easily handle the situation. Honestly I was amazed as they summoned their magic, and exchanged turns aiming their wands towards Grim's butt. "Gah!" He let out a small yelp as they chased him to a corner. Riddle made his final move.
"OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!" He shouted, displaying a collar on Grim.
"Nygah! What the heck is this!?"
"Law of the Queen of Hearts: Number 23 " One shall never bring a cat into a festival. You are a cat means you've broken the rule. I shall have you leave at once." Riddle said, after his short lecture.
"But I'm not a cat!!" Grim shouted. "Whatever I'll burn this collar right up and...Eh? I can't use my fire!"
"What did that guy just do?" I continued to watch them from afar.
"Hmph! You won't be using any magic until I remove the collar. Just like a ordinary cat." Riddle said, with a smirk appearing on his lips.
Grim looks at him shocked. "What!? I'm not some pet!!"
A shadow darkened Riddle's eyes, sending out a dangerous aura towards the defenseless Grim, making his fur spiked up."Oh don't worry, I'd never keep a pet like you. I'll take it off anyway once you get thrown out."
"Wow, as wonderful as ever. Any and all magic get sealed away by your Unique magic, Riddle. I want it...No. I wouldn't ever want that cast on me." Azul whispered to himself, and smiled acknowledging his ability.
"Ah!.." I screamed when Dire Crowley suddenly pulled me by the shoulders. Forcing me to look up at him to see his angry face.
"You must do something about this! It is your familiar!"
"He's not mine!" I shouted, yet again telling him that Grim isn't mine.
"Properly discip....Eh? It's not yours?..." His voice trailed off as he noticed my body shape through the robe. I saw him blushed and immediately let's go. I rolled my eyes, removing the hood from my head. Revealing my emerald eyes and my short red hair that covers my freckled face.
The whole crowd was silenced once they saw me without the hood, one student shouted among the rest. "A GIRL!?"
"What is a girl doing here in a boy's school?" I heard them say.
"She's beautiful looking too."
"And she's tiny."
"Yes...I'm a girl alright. Don't make a big deal about it." I mumbled, feeling uncomfortable from their curious stares.
"Ahem!" I heard Dire Crowley cleared his throat, drawing everyone's attention back on him. "Anyway, back to the topic. Let's get it out of the school at any rate. We won't turn you into stew. For I am gracious. Someone help, please."
"Gyaa! Let me go! I'm going to, going to..."Grim tried squirming out from their hold, but it was useless. "...Become the greatest magician!!" He exclaimed as they threw him out the school for good.
"Damn...I kinda feel bad about him." I felt pity for the talking raccoon.
"We had a bit of trouble along the way, but this brings the entrance ceremony to a close. Dormitory leaders, please show the new students back to the dormitories...Hm? Now that I think about it, I don't see the leader for Diasomnia, and Mr. Draconia around at all." Leaving Dire Crowley confused.
"Who's Draconia?" I asked, but no one didn't hear me.
"That's no different from usual, is it?" The Savanaclaw leader spoke up.
"What? Did nobody tell him about the ceremony?" The student said, the one who had his butt on fire. I wonder who helped him put it out.
"If you're going to complain about it, you should have done it yourself." The Pomefiore leader frowned, rolling his eyes.
"Hmmm. But I don't know anything about that guy.."
There was a sudden pause until some of the new students spoke up from the crowd. "By Draconia... Do they mean 'that' Malleus Draconia?"
"Is he seriously attending this school?" "Scary..." I heard one of them say. What's the deal about this Malleus Draconia guy? They made him sound like he's a dangerous person I thought.
"I was correct. I thought he might come, but Malleus really didn't. It seems the 'invitation never arrived' again." The member of the Diasomnia said with a slight frown.
"My deepest apologies." Azul said, feeling awful. "I promised, we didn't intend to exclude you."
"His aura makes it hard to approach him." Riddle told the Diasomnia member.
"It's fine. Members of the Diasomnia Dormitory can come with me...I hope this doesn't upset him." With that, I watched all the dormitory leaders left with their group.
"Then Miss Blair, was it? I'm terribly sorry about this but...We must have you leave this school. Those without any talent for magic cannot be allowed to attend classes here, and no girls of course." Dire Crowley explained.
"Then how am I supposed to go home?" I asked him with a hint of sadness in my voice.
"Oh! There's no need to worry. The Dark Mirror will send you directly back from whence you came. Enter the gate, and picture your home clearly in your mind."
"Home... Home..." I whisper softly, closing my eyes and drawing out the image of my home apartment. Seeing flowers neatly stacked onto shelves, and the smell of mom's perfume and her smile that always greets me everyday. "Home...Home..."
"Oh Dark Mirror! Guide this one back to the place she belongs!" Dire Crowley said to the Mirror on the Wall, but nothing happened. I opened my eyes and looked at him. "I'm not home yet..."
"Don't worry, I'll try this once more. Oh Dark Mirror! Guide this-"
"There's nothing." The mirror finally spoked. "The place she belongs is nowhere near this world... It does not exist."
"Eh!?"
I swear I felt my heart stopped the moment the Mirror answered. I just wanna collapse to my knees and cry, hoping that any of this isn't true. Am I ever gonna see my mom again?
"What did you say?" Dire Crowley said to the Mirror, still in shock. "That is unbelievable! Hmmm, well, the unbelievable has been on parade today. This is the first time it's ever happened since I became dean, what should be..." Then looks over to me. "Where exactly did you come from?"
"I came from Raybaw, it's a small town I've grown up in." I told him.
"Hmm...I've never heard of that place." He shook his head slightly. "I have a general grasp of where all the students came from, but this I've never heard that'd name before. Come, let's do some research in the library."
"Okay." I nodded, following close behind his trail, but I paused half way from the door as I heard a whisper.
"Calanthe..." The whisper said it closely to my ear, which startled me. I tried to find where it came from, but Dire Crowley can be heard shouting from the halls. "Blair! Don't make me come back there!"
"Y-yes! Sorry!.." I ran, leaving the Mirror chamber behind.
