5 || Picking Fights
A couple of days later, Harriet, Sonya, and the other Keepers had a Meeting to talk about what job I would be doing for the rest of my time in the Glen. It was ironic that a Bagger was the job that I liked the most. The more I was working with Emily and Lillie, the more comfortable I felt being in the Deadheads.
"Congratulations, Piper," Emily said to me after the Meeting, a smile on her face. "You're officially a Bagger."
I smiled back at her, then locked my eyes on Lillie, who was just as happy as I was.

I knew that Beth didn't care for me as much ever since I accidentally slapped her, and she did a good job of letting me know that.
One morning, as I made my way towards the Homebase, Beth stuck her foot out in front of me, causing me to trip.
"You should watch where you're going, Newbie," she said, smirking at me, then continued walking.
I thought we were supposed to be nice to each other. I rolled my eyes as I stood up and kept walking.
Later that morning, after breakfast, she made a comment to me as I came back from the Deadheads.
"Worst Bagger ever. You should've been a Slugger."
I sighed, looking down at the ground. I remembered the bonfire the Glen threw for me when I arrived. It was that night I was pushed into the Fight Circle and went up against Beth.
"Oh, come on! You sticks are so weak!" Beth shouted after a girl groaned as she walked away from her. "Where's the Newbie at?"
I was pushed into the Fight Circle. With everyone surrounding us, I knew there wasn't a way out of this.
"The rules are simple, Newbie," Beth stated. "I try to push you out of the Fight Circle and you try to stay in for more than five seconds."
The girls laughed, causing Beth to smirk at me. I looked at Beth, waiting for her to make her first move.
"Come on, Newbie," she said. "Let's see what you can do."
I stood there, letting my heart beat faster and faster by the second. I didn't want to fight Beth. I had no reason to fight her. Why did I have to be the one to do this?
Before I knew it, I ran towards Beth. I placed my hands out in front of me, attempting to push her to the ground. But Beth took her hands and placed them over mine, trying to push me as well. My feet were getting deeper into the sand as I was sliding backwards. I finally let go of her and fell on the ground, landing on my stomach. I heard the other girls cheer on Beth.
"Is that all you got, Newbie?" Beth asked. "You really are a stick."
Everyone laughed again. I huffed a sigh and stood up, brushing the sand off my shirt and pants. Without a warning, I charged at Beth for a second time. However, she jumped out of the way and pushed me, making me land on the ground once more.
She walked towards me and looked down, letting out a chuckle. "It's sad that you can slap me, Newbie, but you can't stand up long enough to fight me?" Beth spat out, adding a scoff and a smirk. "Pathetic."
Now I was mad. Instead of getting up, I stayed on the ground. As she began to walk away, I grabbed her foot and yanked it from under her, resulting in Beth landing on her stomach like I did.
It wasn't long before everyone began to cheer for me. I stood up and looked around at everyone chanting my name. I couldn't help but smile.
"Not bad for a stick, huh, Beth?" a girl with black hair said, smirking at Beth.
I let out a laugh as I received more cheering and applauding from the other Glenners.
Ever since that night, I just knew that her hatred for me grew. In fact, I didn't think she liked anyone. The first person I decided to talk to was Sonya.
"Why are you asking about Beth?" she questioned.
"She's been acting strange around me lately," I replied. "Ever since I got here, she's been nothing but rude to me."
Sonya shook her head, chuckling a little bit. "She's like that with everyone, Piper."
"But why?" I asked. "How can any of you stand her being rude like that?"
"It's just part of her personality, I guess," Sonya answered. "Just don't let her get to you and she'll eventually leave you alone."
The next person I talked to was Gwyneth, who didn't seem to have a problem with Beth.
"Beth and I are friends," she told me. "There ain't no problems between us, so we're cool. I know she has a problem with Esther, though. Everyone knows that, actually."
The last person I talked to was Esther herself, since her name kept popping up whenever I mentioned Beth.
"Beth likes to think she's the boss of everyone, especially the Builders," she said, grabbing a hammer from the toolbox that was beside her. "I became the Keeper of the Builders after it was clear that she wasn't right for the job. She's hated me ever since. Go ask everyone else. They'll tell you the same thing."
I paused for a moment before I spoke up again. "I'm surprised she hasn't beaten anyone up yet."
Esther snorted. "I don't think anyone wants to deal with another Banishment, especially Harriet."
I raised my eyebrows at her. "What's a Banishment?"
"It's an official punishment that is decided by the Keepers. It's a public thing. Everyone watches it so that they know what happens when they don't follow the rules. Once we decide on the Banishment, then that's it. We don't change our minds."
"Where do they get banished to?" I questioned, even though the answer was pretty obvious.
"The Maze, of course," Esther replied. "And no one's ever survived a night in the Maze."
"When was the last Banishment?"
"We had a Banishment two days before you showed up," she answered. "Her name was Emma. She tried to kill another Glenner by attempting to suffocate her while she was asleep."
I widened my eyes. "Who was the other Glenner?"
Esther nodded her head towards Beth, who was heading inside the Homebase.
"Piper! We need your help over here!" Emily called out to me from the Box.
"I should probably get back to work," I told Esther, beginning to walk away from her.
Esther grabbed my arm, turning me around. "Don't mess with Beth. The last thing you want to do is start a fight and Harriet won't like that. Just stay away from Beth and you'll be fine."
I nodded my head and headed towards the Gardens. I didn't take my eyes off of Beth until I was surrounded by other Glenners.
*******
It was just before lunch when Cora approached me. "You on your way to the Homebase for lunch?" she asked.
"Yeah, I'm starving," I replied.
"Same here," she said. "I'm so hungry that I could eat a Griever right now."
I had no idea what a Griever was, but it had to be something big if Cora was willing to eat one. As we were walking, I spotted Beth by the entrance of the Homebase, which had me worried yet annoyed at the same time. I took a deep breath and prepared myself for whatever was about to happen.
"Whatcha doing, Newbie?" Beth yelled my way.
"We just came to get some lunch, Beth," Cora intervened.
"Stuff it, Cora. I'm talking to the Newbie here," Beth snapped at Cora, then turned back and looked at me.
"We're just getting lunch," I repeated. "If you'll excuse us--"
"Why are you in such a hurry?" she interrupted, blocking my way, folding her arms over her chest. "Do you not like talking to me?"
"I'm just hungry, that's all," I replied, beginning to get irritated. "Please get out of the way, Beth."
"What if I don't want to?"
"Beth, just leave her alone," Cora spoke up once again. "Seriously, stop being such a crackface. We only came to get lunch, just like we said."
Beth snorted and shook her head. "Stupid sticks," she muttered.
Finally, I had enough. I gave Beth a hefty shove, causing her to nearly fall on the ground. She looked like I had slapped her across the face again. "You know, I really don't like the way you've been treating me since I got here," I snapped, shooting her a glare. "So just go ahead and tell me why you hate me."
Beth scowled at me. "You really don't want to mess with me, stick."
"Is that a threat?" I retorted.
"What's going on over here?" the sound of Harriet's voice came from behind me.
"It's nothing, Harriet," Cora responded.
"Girls?" Harriet looked at me and Beth.
I didn't take my eyes off of Beth when I said, "Cora's right. It's nothing."
Harriet nodded her head. "Okay, then. Beth, Esther is looking for you."
Beth didn't respond. Instead, she walked past me, bumping my shoulder on purpose.
Cora and I turned around and watched her storm off. I folded my arms over my chest, along with Cora.
"Wow," she said. "You've got some guts, Newbie."
I sighed, looking at Cora. "Come on, let's go get some lunch now."
