Chapter Six

Reanna slowly turned around, reaching for her pocket knife. When she finished turning, her eyes widened.

The bear was huge! Its dark fur loomed over them, and a growl in the air could be heard. Reanna's clutch on her pocket knife tightened. Then she heard a squeal of delight. And a little bear tumbled up to the girls. Reanna started to laugh. The shadow of the bear cub had covered the girls, and they, out of fright, had mistaken it for a big, dangerous bear.

Macey picked up the little bear cub and started petting the little thing. It snuggled into the warm arms of the girl, making himself comfortable. Reanna smiled, thinking that it was the cutest thing she had seen since... forever. She pet it soothingly as it started to randomly cry. As fast as the little cub had started, it stopped. Reanna was moved. It liked her! Warm hands caressed her heart, then was replaced to chilled ones. She had had a horrible thought: Usually wherever bear cubs went, their mothers followed.

She waited for a momma bear to come crashing in, ripping the moss that was covering the door apart. But nothing came. She looked at Macey, then the cub in her arms. The adorable cub had fallen asleep. Careful not to awaken the snoozing bear, she mouthed, "Where's the momma bear?"

Macey's eyes widened as the importance of those words sank in. Then she mouthed back, "Dunno. Maybe it... died, and the bear was left all alone."

Reanna thought that over. Though she thought that the first one was more likely, she just decided to hope that maybe Macey was right. Besides, Reanna had really started to like the cute little guy. She nodded then mouthed, "Let's keep this cutie for the night. I mean, I like him, but it's just too big of a risk. So we'll let it go tomorrow, okay?"

Macey nodded back gratefully. She liked the bear cub, too, but the mother of the bear cub was probably looking for him right this moment. She cradled the bear as a mother would to her child, then gently set him down on her bed. A thoughtful look came upon her face. She announced, "We need a new bed for the cub."

Reanna nodded, and together they searched for more moss. Though it was dark, it was easy to find the bushes again. Once they found it, they then picked some berries, grabbing extra for the bear cub. Then they set up the bed, and put the berries into the ziploc bag that held the grapes. Then, after a moment, they made the bed in the corner of the cave they now lived in, and gently set the cub in it. Reanna brushed its soft fur with her hand, and it purred with delight.

Reanna repeatedly did it until the baby bear fell asleep, gently snoring.

Macey kissed the bear on the top of the head, then went to her moss-bed and curled up like the bear had. So Reanna stood up and walked up to her bed. She hesitated a moment before she climbed in. Should they have just made the bear leave, or did they make the right choice? Then, shoving away the thought, she slipped into the moss that was now her bed. She longed for the sheets of her old bed and pillows, and the whirring of the fan. She had gotten hot very easily, and her mom had decided to make it easier for Reanna to sleep.

Reanna gulped.

My mom, she thought.

She wished the plane crash had never happened. If only there was a time traveling machine that would be able to make the plane crash never happen, or at least save Mom's and Reanna's brother's lives.

She tried to put the thoughts away, but they stayed in her mind as if refusing completely. Reanna knew right then that she was probably not going to have an even a wink of sleep. But she was wrong. She slowly dozed off.
