Chapter Two: Not What A Mother Wants To See
Louis froze in his spot. His hands were sweaty and he could feel his fringe starting to cling to his forehead.
"What is this?" Jay was trying to stay calm, anyone could see that. Her eyes were darker then usually and her fists were locked together.
Louis couldn't speak, and even if he could what would he say? 'Oh yeah, about that mum, I've been an erotic model since I left school two years ago and it's the most fun ever.' Yeah, I think not.
"Is this how you're getting money? Is this how you always have nice new things and can treat us to meals and shopping?" She paused, her face twisting with disgust. "Did you buy those shoes with money from doing.. this?!" Her volume was raising now.
"I.."
Jay waited seeing if he had anything to say else to say. When he didn't open his mouth again she glanced down at the magazine before looking up at Louis with tears in her eyes. Louis moved to hug her then realised they were angry tears and froze all over again.
"This has our neighbours name on, god knows how long he's been looking at this!!... How long have you been doing this?!" She waved the magazine in the space between them, Louis could see her hands were shaking now.
He knew she was upset, she was also angry. No, angry was an understatement. She was angry when Louis broke her grandmothers china cup. Now she unbelievely pissed off.
"Umm.." He didnt know how to reply. If he lies, she'll see through it. He tells the truth and he's dead. He can't win.
"I'm waiting.." Jay checks her watch "And so are all the sick children at the hospital!"
"I started two weeks before I left school" Louis looked down, he couldn't meet her eyes.
"How did you even..? You're so... shy around people.. and yet. How?"
"Erm, a friend from school. He worked there, indrouced me to my- his boss. He liked me, said that I'd make a good model and offered for me to do a photoshoot to see if I wanted to go ahead with it. At first I was going to just say no, then I found out the pay..."
Jay made a weired sound in the back of her throat and Louis had no doubt her eyes held extreme disappointment in him. He was ashamed too. He liked the job, but he always knew it wasn't respectful. He didn't tell his mum because he knew it wasn't what any mother wants to see. He was wrong to lie to his mum.
However he can't deny that he'll miss the house, the boys, the attention because he would. He would miss all of it but if it meant regaining the respect of his mother, he'd do it. He'd quit.
"Louis, you're going to quit that disgusting job and move back in here" It was like Louis has predicted her next words. He nodded. She started walking to the door. Louis followed, head still hung low. "I have to go to work, when get back I want all you're things to be in the basement and for you to be unemployed because I'm assuming you lied about working in the bookshop. We'll discuss this more when I'm back"
She left.
Louis looked up at the door. She took that well...
~*~*~*~
Louis had been moving stuff to his mothers house all day. Mark had been helping. Mark was Louis' best friend, he worked at the house too but he wasn't a model. He was a writer for the magazine. He looked like a writer too, Louis thought. Mark was tall and skinny, with messy brown hair. His skin was pale with a few freckles here and there. He had a button nose and full red lips that stood out because of his skin. Louis supposed he was cute. Really cute. But they were like brothers so that was as far as Louis went when thinking about Mark.
They had moved all the furniture and all of Louis' clothes, shoes etcetera. He only had two more boxes to go, which were filled with the magazines were Louis was on the cover, so once they were loaded into his car he re-entered the house to say goodbye to everyone.
First were his friends, they all hugged and knew they would honestly miss each other. They'd lived together for over two years, they were basically brothers. Although Louis knew that he wasn't so close to any of them, expect Mark, to be even close to tears.
After he said goodbye to Jackson, a model who had only just joined their little family so Louis didn't really know him, Louis moved onto Jeff.
Jeff was his boss, he was the guy in charge of the magazine and made the job easy for his models. Jeff was a short chubby man, he wasn't cut out for modelling. No way. He had a heart shaped face, bald head and smelt like a lynx factory. All that aside he was also a kind man, maybe slightly money orientated, but still a kind man. He was always cracking jokes and always always made sure life for his models was easy.
Jeff was smiling sadly. Louis knew he would be a little upset about Louis as a person leaving but he'd be more upset about Louis as a model leaving. The magazine had gained many fans and sold more copies since Louis had been around. Louis had caused the magazine to go from successfully to highly successful. Louis always thought it was simply because he was the first fresh face in years but Jeff always assured him it was because he was "boooootiful"
"Louis, my son" Jeff held Louis at arms length and looked him over. "My best model... I can not believe it" Jeff shook his head. "Heh, I say that to 'em all when they leave"
Louis laughed, ignoring the forming tears in his eyes. This was it, two years of his life. Gone.
"I know, I've seen a few people leave. You always say the same"
"Ha, but tis true dis time" Jeff winked and then hugged Louis.
This was different to the other times people had left. So was the envelope Jeff pushed into the top of Louis' jeans.
Louis went to protest but didn't get the chance.
"You're owed a months wages, plus imam miss ya lad. Take it to remember me, okay?"
"Okay"
And that was it. Jeff tapped Louis' butt then walked away towards his office. Louis blushed.
Mark came up to him now and they left, Mark stopped Louis when he tried to look back.
When they got into the car Mark had silent tears running down his face. Neither said anything. Louis just drove, letting a tear or two fall but he quickly wiped them so he could see were he was driving.
Mark suddenly took his a deep breathe, his hands shaking as he raised them to cover his face.
"Mark, man, don't worry. You can visit any time, you're not a model so mum should be okay with that?"
"You think?"
"I know" Louis' nodded and took one hand off the stering wheel to hold Mark's hand.
Mark grinned at Louis. They'd always been close like this, Louis even had a little crush on Mark once but he figured that neither of them wanted to ruin a perfectly good friendship. He was fine with them just being friends.. who had kissed a few times.
Heh, long story made short. They got drunk, kissed and then both acted like it never happened.
Mark had never said anything about his sexuality to Louis, although he guessed Mark was gay or bi. Or maybe he just didn't do labels. Louis liked that thought. Not labelling yourself and justy being yourself.
When he pulled into the drive Louis let go on Marks hand. They walked up to the door in silence.
"Oh wait! The boxes!" Mark turned and jogged back to the car.
Louis sighed and walked over to grab one of the boxes.
They entered the house and went down to the basement which was now turned into a bedroom/ hang out.
Louis and Mark had made it look similar to Louis' room at the house. Bed in the corner, beanbags in the other, book shelf and wardrobe. There was also a TV now too. Louis had no use for it in the house so had left it here in the basement (which used to be a hang out for Louis and his mates)
They put the boxes on the bed and both paused.
"I can't keep these" Louis muttered the same time Mark said "You can't keep these"
"You take them" Louis suggests, turning to face Mark.
Mark nodded. "Okay, do you want me to keep them all safe or throw them away?"
"Keep all the nice ones"
"They're all nice, Lou" Mark winked.
Louis chuckled before throwing himself down on the blue beanbag. Mark did the same but on the green bag beside Louis.
"So... What you got to eat?"
Louis burst out laughing, typical Mark.
~*~*~*~
Music played loudly in the basement. Louis stood to sing along. He began singing very badly and out of tune.
'"And I can't change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
And I can't change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
My love
My love
My love
She keeps me warm"
"LOUIS! SHUT UP!" Mark yelled, covering his ears.
Louis chuckled and sat back on his beanbag.
"Have you ever sang properly?"
"Are you mocking my singing skills?" Louis rose an eyebrow sarcastically.
Mark shook his head and got up to change the song.
"That's a good song!" Louis complained.
Apocalypita came on.
Both the boys looked at each other and said the same words. "This is better"
They bobbed their heads to the tune and Louis checked his watch. They'd be off to pick up the girls in about ten minutes.
Mark sat again and swung his legs over Louis'. Louis rested his hands on Mark's knees, patting them to the beat of the song. Mark smiled at Louis before drinking from his coke can.
"Lou?"
"Yeah Marko?"
"Polo! Can I ask you something?"
Louis chuckled "You just did"
Mark reached over and hit Louis on his arm. Louis yelped and rubbed his arm.
"Be serious"
"How can I went you're abusing me?" Louis pouted. Mark flicked his nose.
"Louis, c'mon, can you be serious for a second?" Mark was frowning and that shut Louis up. The brunette nodded.
Mark looked away so Louis took his hand for the second time that day. He squeezed Mark's fingers and Mark looked up, smiling and blushing a little.
"Well, there's this guy I met. We get along great and we keep almost kissing. But.. I've never.. With a guy or a girl... Other then we were drunk those times" They both laughed, knowing it wasn't going to get awkward. "So, I guess, my question is what would be the best way to have the first kiss?"
"Mark, I wish I could tell you an answer but in all honestly you just have to let it happen. And if it doesn't then I'm sorry but maybe you need to think about what you're doing because you don't want to get hurt"
Mark nodded, understanding what Louis meant. They hugged and then stood to get ready to go picked up the twins.
~*~*~*~
"OH MI GOSH!"
Lottie was stood on the foot of the stairs to the basement. Mark and Louis were sat on the same beanbag, Louis had his arms wrapped around Mark. The green beanbag had a small hole in so they had dediced to share. And of course, Lottie chooses to walk in then.
The twins had been upstairs watching movies and doing homework so Louis and Mark left them to it and went to the basement before Fizzy and Lottie got home.
"OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!" Lottie started to run around in a circle around the basement.
Louis and Mark watched her with a smile before she ran over to them and took Mark's face in her hands.
"He's cute. That's good. Louis you have great tatse. Wow, he has very pretty eyes"
Louis frowned, he didn't know what colour eyes Mark had. Lottie made Mark stand up and continued rattling off the attractive things about him, which apparently included his height, his face, his blush, his shy smile, his hair and his butt. Mark's face slowly got red to the point it looked like he was holding his breath.
Louis stood and walked infront of Mark, looking at his eyes. They were a sort of sky blue but slightly more blue and brighter. If that made sense.
"Heh, you're right. He does have pretty eyes"
Lottie stopped talking "You didn't know the colour of your own boyfriends eyes?"
"I'm not his boyfriend" Mark mutters
Louis nodded, confirming what Mark had said. Lottie looked disappointed.
"Awhhh. You two looked cute together! Shame. Oh well, at least I get to keep boyfriend hunting for L-" She was cut off by her ringtone. She beamed at the phone and walked out, answering as she did. "Hey, Danny"
Louis held up a finger to Mark and then chased after Lottie.
When caught up to her, which was only half way up the stairs to the basement, he snatched the phone off her and started to speak.
"Hello"
"Louis!" Lottie kicked him, he frowned at her.
"Um, hi?" Daniel's voice met Louis' ears.
"I'm Louis" Lottie attempted to get the phone back but Louis just shoved her away.
"Oooh, Lots brother? She talk about you a lot" Louis chuckled.
"Yeah, she talks about you a lot too" Daniel laughed this time
Lottie kicked off again. He kicked back. Lottie frowned and sat on the stair, rubbing her leg.
"Good things, I hope?" Daniel honestly sounded worried.
"Yeah, yeah" Louis smiled and decided that maybe this dude was okay.
"Good"
"So, you like her yeah?"
"Umm.." There was a pause "Am I on loudspeaker?"
"Nope"
"'Kay, can you promise to not tell her this but I've liked her since year 7, so ya'know two years"
"OH MI GOSH THAT IS ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!!" Louis grinned from ear to ear. Lottie gave him a weird look. "Puppy" He said to her. She nodded, huh that was lucky.
"Good save. I got a new puppy yesterday"
"I didn't know"
"Oh" Another pause. "You won't mention it to her right? I'm gonna tell her eventually though"
"Okay then, and don't worry I won't. Okay, here's your girlfriend back. Don't get her pregnant"
"Yes sir!"
Louis chuckled and gave the phone back to Lottie. She kicked him again before running off up the stairs. Louis rubbed his shin.
"Ouch, THAT HURT YOU BITCH!"
"LOVE YOU TOO BOOBEAR!"
Mark appeared then started to laugh uncontrollably. "B-boo-b-bear?"
Louis pushed him over. "Shut it"
~*~*~*~
"Boo?!" Jay called and knocked on the basement door.
Laughter was heard from the basement and then a loud slapping sound.
"Fuck, that hurt Lou!"
"Oops"
Louis opened the door the next moment, Jay peered over his shoulder to see Mark sitting on the blue beanbag.
"Hi mum.." Louis trailed off.
"Whose you're friend?" Jay ignored him. Louis could tell she was wondering if he was a model or not.
"Mark, he's a writer"
"Oh. That's nice" Jay walked into the room and hugged Mark, who had now stood. "It's lovely to meet you Mark but Louis and I need to talk. You can come back tomorrow if you'd like"
Mark smiled and nodded understandingly "Okay, tomorrow works for me" Jay smiled back.
Mark and Louis made their way up to the front door. They hugged and Mark held on tighter then usually, saying all the words he couldn't say out loud.
Louis hugged just as hard before turning his head and kissing Mark on the cheek.
"See ya tomorrow Marko"
"Polo" Mark then whispered "Good luck" and left.
Louis slowly made his way down the stairs until we walked into his basement room again. Jay was waiting, sat on the bed.
"The girls are all in bed" Louis told her
"I know"
Although Louis knew that Lottie wasn't in bed. Lottie would be sat on the stairs to the basement, listening to the conversation because she knew that Louis wouldn't move back in unless something happened. Even Phoebe and Daisy had asked if Louis did something bad and that's why he was living with them again.
Louis sighed and sat down on the bed beside his mum. He waited for her to start shouting. She didn't.
"Louis, I'm disappointed"
Louis just nodded. Jay wrapped her arms around her son.
"I'm sending you to an all boys boarding school that's meant to help teens realise that they need to start doing more with their lives"
"WHAT?!" Louis jumped up out of the embrace. "No! I'm not going to a boarding school! Especially one for boys that can't behave! I- I just can't! Please, mum! Don't make me go!"
Jay stood and sighed.
"Mum, seriously. I won't go back to that job if that's want you're thinking! I promise! Just, let me stay. I'm not good with new people! You know that!"
"Louis-"
"NO! I won't go! I don't want to!"
"You're going. I want you to go"
"I hate you"
It all went silent. Never in his life had Louis told Jay he hated her. He didn't hate her. She was his mother, he loved her with everything in him.
"Mum.. I didn't-"
"No, shh Louis and listen to me. You're going to that school and you're going to get straightened out! No more jobs, no more earning indecent money and no more hating your mother! You leave in two days"
Jay stormed out and Louis heard Lottie run up the stairs in time to not get caught. Good, his mother was scaring when she was mad. He'd probably said that a thousand times now.
Five minutes late Lottie came in to see Louis just standing there. Lottie pulled him into a hug and he started to cry.
"Don't worry, it's okay"
"Lot, you don't understand-"
"I do. I've seen the magazines. I saw one in the shop about two months ago"
Louis winced, two months ago he was on the cover crouching down with a gag in one hand and his fingers pressed to his lips as he stared straight into the camera looking very lustful and horney. His pants were so tight that you could see his bulge very clearly!
"Oh"
"I threw up" Lottie laughed.
Louis pulled back "Why didn't you say anything?"
She shrug. "Didn't want ya to worry"
"Thanks Lottie"
"Want to watch a movie?" Lottie nodded, knowing Louis needed to get his mind off everything.
