» Volume 3

An hour. That's all it took for everything to fall apart.

The night had started out nice. The kids, aside from Mike, all seemed to be having a great time. Frankie and Dustin defended their favorite candies, while Lucas and Max laughed at their selection.

Will smiled so much, it made it hard for Mike to be mad.

Still, Mike felt as though his entire Halloween had been ruined. All because of Max and Frankie. They just had to come along.

It was fun while it lasted.

Then, they got to the last house they'd be trick-or-treating together at that night.

-

"Did you agree to this?" Mike interrogates, watching as Max, Dustin and Lucas joke around.

"What?" Will questions, putting is tape recorder down. Frankie raises an eyebrow as well, glancing towards Mike. He's still ignoring her I'm existence. He has been all night.

"To her joining our party," Mike elaborates. Frankie rolls her eyes.

"It's just for Halloween."

"You should have checked with me."

"Well, they were excited. I guess I thought you'd be okay with it," will explains apologetically.

"She's ruining the best night of the year," Mike grumbles, "and so is she."

Despite that last part being whispered, both Will and Frankie heard it. Suddenly, Frankie isn't feeling so welcome. She shares a look with Will before they continue in their way.

As they approach the corner, an older boy pops out of the corner.

"Watch it, zombie boy!" He growls.

Will gasps in fear.

"Trick or treat, freak!"

"Boo!"

As Will falls to the ground, the world around him is consumed in darkness. Frankie is gone. Mike is gone.

"Mike? Frankie?" He shouts, standing back onto his feet, and desperately looking around. A weird noise echoes around him, and a sense of fear consumes him as his eyes meet the sight of what he can only describe as a monster. His feet take him running towards the house and down stairs.

He takes shelter under the stairs, hugging his knees and rocking back and forth.

The sound gets louder.

He can feel it getting closer.

"Will!" Frankie shouts, snapping him out of the world he once seemed stranded in. His heart is racing as he frantically looking around.

"Is he alright?!" Alex asks.

"Yeah, he looks pale!" Dina comments.

"Indeed, perhaps we should provide him water?" Tony queries.

Will's eyes widen.

Who are these people?!

The three had shifted back into their ghosts forms as soon as they sensed something wrong with the atmosphere. None of them realize that Will can see them. He's not supposed to see them— not while they're ghosts. He shouldn't be able to see them without Frankie's piano solo.

Will is still trying to muster up words.

"Give him mouth to mouth!" Dina smirks. Frankie rolls her eyes. Will blushes a little, despite being shaken up.

"Will, are you okay?" Frankie softly whispers, bending over to take his face into her hands. She stares into his eyes, desperately trying to get them to stop glancing everywhere. They're faces are inches away. He opens his mouth to say something, but is interrupted.

"Will! Are you hurt?" Mike comes rushing down the stairs, and walking right through Tony's apparition. He pushes Frankie out of the way.

Will's eyes widen even larger.

Mike can't see them. He just walked right through one them?!

"Holy shit!" Dustin shouts, storming down the steps along with Lucas and Max. "Is he okay?" Lucas worriedly asks.

"I don't know," Mike mumbles annoyed, "what the hell did you do to him, Frankie?!"

Frankie gasps, clearly offended.

"I didn't do anything! I just followed him here. He's having an anxiety attack, I can help—"

"Everything was just fine till you came along!" Mike shouts. Will is way too shaken up to intervene. Frankie looks like she wants to cry, and suddenly she hates Halloween.

"I'm gonna get you home, okay?" Mike hums calmingly, helping Will up.

"Let me help—" Dustin tries.

"I got him."

"Mike—"

"Keep trick or treating. I'm bored anyways." Mike says, helping Will up the steps. Will throws many glances to Frankie and the apparitions around her.

"What's wrong with him?" Max asks.

Lucas and Dustin look at one another, deciding not to answer Max's question.

"Are you alright?" Max questions Frankie, looking towards the girl. A small sigh leaves the small girl's lips in response.

"I'm fine. I think I'm gonna go. See you guys at school," Frankie mumbles, walking up the steps.

"Wait, Frankie—" Dustin calls after her, feeling bad for Mike's rude words. Despite his calls, Frankie keeps walking. Lucas holds Dustin back from following her, saying something about space.

As soon as Frankie is at least a block away, she begins to sniffle.

Tears rush down her cheeks.

"Well, that was very rude," Tony comments.

"You guys can go back to your human form," Frankie sniffles. The ghosts disappears without hesitation.

Frankie continues walking for a good 10 minutes. Eventually, she walks past a house that seems to be having a party.

She walks past, minding her own business. "Frankie Prynne?" A voice asks from behind her. She turns around with a look of confusion. She's met with the sight of a high school boy that makes her feel weirdly uneasy

"Yeah?"

He smirks.
