» Volume 1
"Well, uh," Will nervously taps his fingers against his thighs, "I like you– a lot."
Frankie smiles lightly in relief.
"Thank goodness," she sighs, "for a second there, I thought I was gonna have to ignore you forever."
Will breaks into laughter.
Frankie links their hands once more before saying, "I like you, too. So much."
Now they're both laughing, although nothing is particularly funny. Will appreciatively squeezes the girl's hand. In his head, he imagines what he plans to sketch later on.
"Do you really think that's the reason I can see the ghosts without the piano?" He hums.
"Honestly? No, but I don't know what else the reason could be," she admits.
Another thought crosses his mind.
"T-There's something else I wanted to talk about," Will mutters, causing Frankie to glance at him curiously.
"What is it?"
"It's about Dart. I-I think....I think I heard him. When I was having an episode," he states, beginning to become noticeably anxious.
Frankie's eyes widen, "are you sure?"
He nods his head.
"You should tell Mike," she advises as she hops off her swing. Will stands from his and nods his head.
"I will," he promises. Just as the two begin to make their way back to the school, the bell rings and kids spill from the doors.
"Do you think Mike's gonna hate me even more?" Frankie softly questions as the two walk through the entrance. Will glances at her with a frown, and shrugs his shoulders.
"I'm not sure, but whatever he does, I promise I'll defend you this time," he swears, taking her hand in his.
Frankie turns to him with a smile before pushing her way towards their lockers.
She leaves Will to go to his own locker where she assumes he'll meet Mike and explain the current dilemma. She hopes that he'll leave the fact that they ditched class out— Mike would just have another reason to hate her. For being a "bad influence".
A few minutes later she approaches Will's locker, only to see Mike sprinting towards Mr. Clarke's room. Will is no where in sight.
Her eyes widen, and she follows after him.
"Stop!" Mike shouts, bursting through the classroom door, "I'm really sorry, Mr. Clarke, it's just a stupid prank. I told him to stop. We need to go."
"Mike?!"
"Right now. RIGHT NOW."
Confusedly, the kids follow after Mike. Frankie joins them, throwing Dustin a confused look. He shrugs his shoulders in response.
As they approach the AV room, Mike lets everyone in except Max and Frankie.
Frankie frowns, and Max begins to bang on the door annoyedly.
"Guys, can we come in yet?" She yells through the door.
"No!" Mike calls back.
Max glances to Frankie.
"Don't you ever get fed up with the way he treats us?" She questions.
Frankie snorts, "you have no idea."
A loud sound comes from behind the door causing both girls to jump a little. Max tries pounding on the door again, but it's no use. They must've tuned her out already. Frankie begins to feel extremely nervous about it all.
"That's it," Max mutters while digging through her bag, "if we want anything done, we have to do it ourselves."
"What're you doing?!" Frankie mumbles, watching as the red head fiddles with the door knob.
"I'm breaking in."
Frankie's eyes widen, but she never stops the girl. In fact, she anxiously awaits the door's opening. Just as Max throws open the door, an evolved Dart runs past them.
"What the hell?"
Suddenly, the girl's are being unnecessarily tackled to the ground. Dustin falls onto Max, and Lucas onto Frankie.
"Where'd he go?!" Mike frantically mumbles, looking all around the hallway.
"What was that?!" Max asks.
"Dart!"
"What?"
"You let him escape!"
Dustin springs between the two, "why did you attack him?!"
Rather than losing the argument, Mike pushes past him and starts walking down the hallway. "C'mon!" He calls, looking annoyed by the situation.
"Don't hurt him! Don't you hurt him!" Dustin shouts.
Will helps Frankie up, and she looks at him with complete confusion. He sighs and shakes his head, "it's a long story".
"Did you tell them?" She whispers.
"Tell them what?"
"That I know."
Will shakes his head, "we have to wait. If we tell them you know, we have to explain the ghost thing— a-and I don't think this is the best time."
"Yeah, you're right," Frankie agrees. She smiles reassuringly at him, and grabs his hand.
Will happily laces their fingers, and stares down at their linked hands with a blush. Frankie tugs him down the hall, joining the search for Dart. Halfway down the hall, she stops walking and her eyes widen. Will turns to her worriedly.
"What? What is it?" He asks, looking around frantically.
"I FORGOT ABOUT STEVE!"
Next thing she knows, she's sprinting down the hallway towards the exit. She can hear Will laughing loudly from behind her.
Sure enough, parked in the empty parking lot is Steve's car.
As soon as the two make eye contact, the boy hops out of his car and walks towards her. Frankie nervously smiles, and allows Steve to take her face in his hands.
"What took you so long?! Did someone hurt you again?!" He examines her face for any wounds.
"No, I'm fine! I just forgot to tell you that I have to stay and make up a test, I'm really sorry," she lies. Steve gives her a skeptical look, but let's her face go anyway.
"When should I pick you up?" He questions softly.
"Give me an hour."
With a nod, Steve slowly begins to walk back to his car. Frankie begins to walk back into the school, "I love you!"
"I love you, too!"
With a relieved sigh, she begins to search the hallways for dart again.
