E S C A P E
Mike manages to block out most of what the adults talk about next, focusing more on making sure Frankie's resting body is unharmed.
During the rush, he feels he might've accidentally knocked parts of her body into the walls beside him, and the last thing he wants is another thing to feel guilty about when she wakes up.
He feels so guilty he let this happen to her.
He brought her to the one place she hates, didn't listen to the fear in her voice, let the doctors stab her with a needle, and worst of all he didn't even wake her up right away. He could've done something, and he didn't.
He stares at her with a mixture of guilt and sorrow.
Why would he let her get dragged back to this place?
"What'd they use to do to you in the lab?" Mike quietly questions, sitting across Frankie on her bed.
His mind takes him back to their sleepover.
She nervously fiddles with her hands, shrugging her shoulders.
"Lots of things," she finally says. "What exactly do you wanna know?"
"Everything, if that's alright," he tries, watching her expression carefully.
"Well...there was a lot of experiments that included shock therapy. I can still remember how the leather restraints felt against my wrists," she grabs at her left wrist with a traumatized look. "I think the needles were a lot worse though."
"Needles?" He questions, feeling a little guilty for asking at all.
"Yeah. They use to plunge all sorts of things into my system. Sometimes I wouldn't wake up until weeks after certain medications— or, at least that's what the spirits told me. When I would wake up they'd tell me how long I slept," she explains.
"I'm sorry," he murmurs. "That sounds terrible."
"You don't have to apologize. You didn't technically do anything," she sighs, "but, yeah, I really hate needles now."
He snaps out of his memory when Hopper storms to the door.
"Then we get the hell out of here," he states.
"No, then the power comes back on," Bob points out. "If you wanna unlock the doors you have to completely reboot the computer system, and then override the the security codes with a manual input."
"Fine, how do I do that?" Hopper asks.
"You can't! Not unless you know BASIC," Bob sighs.
"I don't know what that means," Hopper frustratedly says.
"It's a computer programming language," Mike says from where he sits with Frankie.
"Alright, teach it to me," Jim says as if it's simple.
Bob scoffs.
"Shall I teach you French while I'm at it, Jim? How about a little German?" He sarcastically states, then turns to Owens. "How about you, Doc? You speak BASIC?"
"No," Owens admits, looking away.
"Okay, I got this," Bob softly sates. "I got this."
You know what happens next.
All except two escape the dreaded lab. Will and Frankie remain asleep the entire time. Mike watches Bob die, and is forced to shove Mrs. Byers into the car. They make it out alive thanks to—
Bob Newby. Superhero.
Even in her sleep, Frankie feels the gate open for him.
