Round 2 Elimination and Review

So the dreaded day of Round 2 Eliminations has arrived and it is still not over as more will be coming around tomorrow.

The above quote in the image section is what all authors are striving to provide for their readers. The journey is quite extensive and leads to constant editing and improved writing. I know that some of the authors that have been eliminated are very young. You will improve if you keep writing and if you are not 18 yet, there is so much you still have to learn. So please do not be disheartened but pay attention in your English classes and read a lot of good books especially the Classics.

Before we go in to the eliminations, I want to provide some writing tips in general for all the authors in the Teen Fiction Genre of the Storyteller Awards.

*** 1. Plot Development requires proper planning. Most authors have an entire plan written out for their book before they even start on it. Some of us have thought about it for months.

Then we create an outline, it could be in bullet form or just words to get our thoughts on paper or a computer. Then we expand that into a few sentences (5-10) about what we would like to portray, show, emote and depict. Then we write.

Even after that, we read and re-read everything at least five times before we hit the orange PUBLISH button. This process is done for EVERY chapter. Even after that process, we will go back and edit the chapters.

Know that every author has a different process but everyone plans their thoughts before they write. That never changes!

So for all your books, please plan your story lines in advance before writing a single chapter. It makes a difference!

*** 2. Tense Mix-Ups are very prominent in many books. This means that an author starts a chapter out in present tense for narratives and descriptions but then switches to past tense in the middle of the chapter. Also, the following chapter could have a different tense from the chapter before it.

Consistency is very important. Your dialogues can differ in the tense used in the descriptions and narratives but try to keep them consistent as well. So if you start your chapter in past tense then throughout, continue using the same past tense. Same rules apply for present tense and future tense.

This is a hard mistake to find. It is only visible when you read the story out aloud. As authors, you have to also make up your mind about what tense you would like to use for your story.

*** 3. Preposition Use is also a major concern for many authors. In the English language, there are approximately 150 prepositions. But these small words like: at, in, of, off, for, to, up, until, after, through and many others are the important links that connect your nouns, pronouns and phrases within a sentence.

Here is a great resource (http://www.gingersoftware.com/content/grammar-rules/preposition/) to see if you understand prepositions. The direct link is available in the comment section.

Here is a short quiz that you can take to see if you understand prepositions:

^^^ Take your sister _____ you. (Choices - For, In, With or To)

^^^ Please put the book ____ the table. (Choices - At, In, On or Of)

^^^ Take a left ___ the hallway and then go ____ the stairs. (Choices - In, At, With, Under, Up, Down, After, From) This is a trick sentence with many solutions!

*** 4. Punctuation Use:  For some reasons, many authors hate these little symbols so much that either they use them too much or they don't use them at all or they are incorrectly used. Dialogues are always the ones to suffer the most.

I am going to leave you with two images that explains things in short. If you would like some resources, please PM me.

Here are the list of five eliminators so far in alphabetical order by author's name. I have included a brief review for those books that I have read.

Falling For The Trickster by badgirls189

I never got a chance to read your book as your book was eliminated before I reached the Upper Division levels.

Falling For Paris by chintyadewi561

Review: Please ensure that your chapters are short. Wattpad recommends that chapters should not be longer than 15-17 minutes to keep readers' interest. Moreover, please plan your plot and characters before starting your story. I was very confused through out the book with all the events that had occurred as it appeared very unrealistic and some times made no sense.

Changing the Mean by JarredBryce

Review: Most of your chapters have no paragraphs and they are just sentences. Please think about adding descriptions, narratives and use of writing devices. This means telling us what a location looks like, what a person may be feeling, what they are thinking, describing the looks of a character and using comparisons or analogies. The main female protagonist reacts to things without provocation and her behaviour is quite inappropriate at times.

Savin Me by MaddysenHatter

Review: Please ensure that your title in the summary matches that of your cover. Please provide background on your characters and events to help the readers understand your story. Also, the character's movements and actions were not described well. Instead of using pictures, please describe and narrate characters, locations, places, thoughts and feelings.

No Boys High School by xThatStrawberryGirlx

Review: You had great descriptions and narratives but because of it, I did not see the story or plot line for the chapters that I read. Please think about all the detail and how to use it and what is necessary for the story to progress. Also, please consider shortening your chapters to keep readers interested.

If any of you would like your complete review and scores, please PM me or tag me in this chapter. These are raw reviews where I have pointed out every mistake on the chapter that I have read. I don't mind sharing them with you and they are meant to be helpful, so please do not take them as criticism. If interested, I will send them to you by PM.

So there are still 25 books remaining for Round 2 eliminations in the Teen Fiction Genre. Once further eliminations are announced and I have provided reviews, I will update the list in a separate chapter. Good Luck!
