13. This needs to be addressed- Part 2
Not a rewrite but this also needs to be strongly and heavily address
This part is going to be more sensitive than part 12, because it's addressing the Lights Out and like i did in Part 12, I will be putting a trigger warning before addressing what needs to be addressed.
This needs to be addressed because on Instagram I see a lot of confessions saying what Sam and Artie did was wrong, (which yes it was wrong) and it shouldn't have happened (Which yes it shouldn't have happened) and they should have been better (Again yes they should have) and it was poorly written but like part 12 this aspect also needs to be addressed strongly and heavily too and needs people to be understand why Sam and Artie reacted the way they did to Ryder and what he said in Lights Out.
So...
Again this needs to be addressed...
Firstly Trigger Warning: Mentions of male assault from females, the episode lights, and mentions of false accusations, in appropriate touching, and female assault from males and mentions of the S3 episode Choke. so please read this part at your own risk and with caution too. Do not pressure yourself or force yourself to read this part you can skip it if you like as well.
Secondly: I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH, I STRONGLY THINK AND BELIEVE THAT SAM AND ARTIE SHOULD HAVE BEEN EDUCATED ON THE SUBJECT AND SCHUE SHOULD HAVE ADDRESSED TO SAM AND ARTIE WHAT THEY DID AND SAID WAS WRONG BUT I UNDERSTAND WHY THEY DID WHAT THEY SAID AND DID EVEN IF I DON'T AGREE WITH WHAT THEY SAID AND DID TO RYDER IN THE EP. BUT IT IS ALSO AN IMPORTANT ASPECT AS WELL AND NOT JUST FOR HIGHSCHOOL IN GENERAL LIKE SOMEONE TOLD ME ONCE "YEAH FOR HIGHSCHOOL." AND I WAS LIKE "NO.. MALES IN GENERAL, MALES AS A WHOLE."
So read with caution and please remember i do think what they said and did was wrong and think they should have been educated at the end of the ep like how Santana, Mercedes, Sugar, Tina and Brittany were educated throughout the episode of Choke in S3 and i'm not excusing their behaviour or saying it's justifiable because of how realistic it actually is.
In the ep Lights Out Ryder tells the glee club about his story of being assaulted by an older female who used to be his baby sitter and Sam and Artie's reactions towards it was not good at all. But what needs to be understood is that is how male survivors are actually treated by people even by those around them.
No-one really believes a male survivor at all. The storyline Ryder had was handled well also and written to a realistic aspect to show how male survivors as a whole are actually treated.
Male survivors don't speak up and when they do they are treated how Ryder was from Sam and Artie. Opposed to how Beiste was treated in S3 when he as Shannon was assaulted by his ex Cooter, and how people believed them, and even opposed to how false accusations by females are more believed than male survivors.
In S2 Brittany (because of Sue) made a false accusation about Beiste touching her, and Figgins and even Schue were quick to believe Brittany about it. and then fast forward to S3 in the ep Choke and then later for the ep lights out Beiste was believed and had even had a lot of people to support him INCLUDING Schue supporting him and then in Lights Out Sam and Artie treated Ryder the way they did.
They needed to show and raise awareness to how male survivors are actually treated by everyone, and they brush it off and don't talk about it with Kurt from Blaine in S3 when Blaine was intoxicated with alcohol and brushed it off with Puck from Quinn in S3 when she was pressuring him and forcing him into s*x to get pregnant again and even Puck through S1 with the cougars. But needed to address it more and more seriously and we got that through Ryder.
It was a really sensitive topic to write and to have especially for a show based upon a high school glee club and how they wrote it for Ryder was well handled and written, especially when only one person believed Ryder about it all and didn't treat it as a joke at all and that person who believed Ryder and treat it as a joke or think of him as a hero was Kitty, and having Kitty listening to him and then telling her story was powerful.
I do not justify or excuse what Sam and Artie did and said to Ryder in that episode but I understand why, and understand that the writers needed viewers to see just how male survivors are actually treated in the system opposed to female survivors and females who put in false accusations.
I think Sam and Artie should have been educated and Schue should have pulled them aside with Miss Pillsbury, Coach Sue and Coach Beiste about the aspect like how we saw what Roz Washington, Sue and Bieste did with Santana, Mercedes, Sugar, Brittany and Tina in Choke when Santana made the joke she did about Bieste and female victims in a domestic violence situation and how Mercedes, Sugar, Brittany and Tina laughed at Santana's joke.
Male survivors of any kind of assault whether from males or females are just as important as female survivors of any kind of assault and should be taken seriously as well.
and even Brittany in S2 should have educated on how serious a false accusation against someone really is.
Sam and Artie's reactions and words to Ryder are wrong and disgusting but i understand why it was in the show because realistically that is how it is for male survivors of any kind.
If Ryder had said that he was hit by her, the first thing that would have been said was: Did you hit her first? She could have been defending herself from you?
Sam and Artie needed to be educated, and taken what Ryder said seriously and Schue should have stepped in and stopped it, and have them educated instead of keeping quiet and letting it and even saying while just sitting there listening: just stop it.. all the while making Ryder feel guilty and even angry with himself for sharing something personal (which again is realistic)
I also think Jake should have supported Ryder too and helped him a lot, and even call out Schue, Sam and Artie for doing what they did. it would have made sense for Jake as a character as we see him throughout S4 that he cares about others and will defend people no matter what (Jake standing up to Kitty, Bobby Surette and Phil Lipoff and defending Millie from is proof that he cares about others no matter what)
AGAIN: I'm not justifying what Sam and Artie did and not excusing them, and i agree that they shouldn't have said or did anything to Ryder at all and needed to be educated but the show wanted to portray how it actually is for male survivors in the system especially male survivors of females hurting them opposed to how female survivors especially female survivors of male assault and even females who put in false accusations are treated in the system.
so I hope this helps you understand why Sam and Artie reacted the way they did to Ryder even though it was wrong and disgusting.
and also again I'm sorry for the insensitive of this topic but this aspect also needed to be addressed too and not be ignored.
