Dance Dance

This story is an AU that would be taking place in Opal and Rainbow's junior year, a little less than a year before the start of the first book. This is an AU where Pearl's accident never happened.

Rainbow's Pov

I covered my ears with my hands and looked around the gym. I'd helped decorate for the dance earlier that day, and I was pretty proud of how it turned out. The dance committee had decided to go for as many string and disco lights as possible, and since we were mostly armed with Christmas lights the gym shone with different colors as people danced the night away.

I wasn't looking just to admire the decor, though. I was looking for someone:Opal Baroque, one of my closest friends and longtime crush. I finally spotted her sitting in a chair at a table near the back wall alone. I made my way over to her and sat down beside her.

"Hey!" I greeted over the music. "Having fun?" She looked up at me. She was wearing a dark teal dress that ended just below her knees and lighter teal flats. I looked down at my own purple dress that ended just above my knees and white heels. I didn't need heels, I was taller than her as it was, and they were hurting my feet, so I slid them off and placed them next to her purse on the table.

"Yeah, are you?" She asked.

"Yeah. Where's Sugilite?" Opal was almost impossible to find without her partner in crime. They'd known each other almost as long as we'd know each other.

"She's dancing with her boyfriend."

"And you're not dancing with anyone?" I asked, looking at her. She shrugged.

"I have no one to dance with." She responded.

"Want to dance with me?" I asked. Opal blushed.

"I don't know, I'm not that great of a dancer..." I laughed.

"Opal, I've taken dance with you for years. I know you're lying." Opal giggled.

"Yeah, but that's a class. Where we're being told what to do. I like dancing, but I'm not too good at it when I don't know what I'm doing."

"Since when did you let that stop you?" I asked. I stood up and held me hand out to her. "Come on. One song." Opal blushed again, then took my hand.

"Fine." I lead her out to the dance floor and let go of her hand. She stood still for a moment.

I know you can dance. I mouthed, making her laugh again. We danced for the remainder of the song, some fast pop song, then when the song ended she turned to leave. I grabbed her hands.

"Wait," I pleaded.

"You said one dance." Opal said. "And you got it. I'm all set."

"Please?" She sighed and smiled, and I pulled her closed to me, not letting go of her hands. I'd heard the song before, but I didn't know the name. It sounded like the kind of rock song kids in a John Hughes movie would dance to. I kept expecting Opal to take her hands away, but she didn't.

"Are you okay?" I asked her. She nodded.

"Just a little nervous." She admitted.

"Of little old me?" I let go of her hands and wrapped my arms around her. "I think you've known me long enough to be over that." Opal wrapped her arms around me.

"You've known me for a while, but I don't think you know me that well."

"I know lots of things about you," I offered.

"Like what?" She challenged.

"I know that I'm in love with you." I said, even though I tried to help it.

"Really?" Opal asked, looking at me. We stopped moving and stood still on the dance floor. I nodded.

"Yeah. I think I'd know." Opal smiled, and I fell apart. I was going to die if I didn't kiss her, so I did.

And she kissed me back.
