This idea is a bases of magic for each, Dark, Light, and Cosmic. 

The go into idea depth, magi, sorcerers, and witches each try to follow one of the paths, being of Magi for Light. Sorcerers Dark. And Witches as Grey. While Cosmic magic is the highest form of magic to use. Only one managed get to Cosmic energy, which is where we get the use of alchemy with magic. While Light based upon Healing Potions, Dark based upon Harming, Grey being a mix of the two, and Cosmic being Potions of Benefit, like waterbreathing and jumping.

 Then bring the elements of five for each of the five known greatest sorcerers. Spirit being the first known Cosmic Magic User. 

And adding in a boy named Seto who wants to be a Grand Arch Mage, as he must learn and master each form of magic to become a Cosmic Mage.

To which he must travel to the Aether to learn Light, Nether to learn Dark, and Limbo to learn Grey. Then gather together the ingredients to travel to the end to receive knowledge from Spirit on how to combine the three to create Cosmic Magic.

It's a dangerous journal with many things that want to kill you and possible being killed when you challenge the guardians of the main four elements.

So Seto might have two others who are on the path where he is, only for two different reasons. I don't know yet, idea still in the developing stage.
