The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad, We all know about and it's a perfect time for me to talk about The Story of America Card on the Underground Railroad, so here we are talking about exactly that from The Black Man

Section in the Story of America Cards Disclaimer: The Name "The Black Man" is what it's called on the card and sense we are gonna talk about the Underground Railroad and that it would have some serious to a lot topics just wanted to point that out before we begin.

(What was The Underground Railroad?)

The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses established in the United States during the early- to mid-19th century. It was used by enslaved African Americans primarily to escape into free states and Canada.

The network was assisted by abolitionists and others sympathetic to the cause of the escapees, The enslaved who risked escape and those who aided them are also collectively referred to as the "Underground Railroad", Various other routes also led to Mexico.

It ran north and grew steadily until the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln. One estimate suggests that by 1850, 100,000 enslaved people had escaped via Using the Network that is known as the Underground Railroad.

(A Route to Escape Slavery)

From 1780 to 1865, Until the Civil War had Ended Slavery in America, it was not uncommon in the south to see crudely lettered signs nailed to trees informing passers-bys of runway slaves. With one such sign when reading may say: "Runway Slave, Prime Condition, 18 years or thereabouts, Answers to the name of Toby, Property of Jeremiah Higgins".

In this case "Runway slave Toby", may have been one of the lucky ones who had managed to escape slavery by marking the use of the Underground Railroad.

Which was not really a railroad and not located underground, it was in fact a system used before the Civil War had Began it was used to Transport escaped slaves into the 14 "free" states (At the time), in the North or into Canada, it was called the Underground Railroad because for the activities that usually took place in the Darkness and always in secret and because the 3,000 or more people part of the system used railroad terms when they communicated with one another.

The Slaves were called "freight" those who helped them were known as "conductors", the resting places which were mostly farms located about a night's march apart were called "stations" and the routes north were referred to as "lines", The most frequently used lines led through Pennsylvania and Ohio, but the network didn't end there it also extended as far west as Iowa and north to the Canadian border.

Along the way anti-slavery Northerners and free blacks assisted the runways with food, hiding places and directions to the next stop, often elaborate disguises including wigs, moustaches and powder, were all used to help make the runways appear white (Now that is crazy and clever if i have to say it now).

The "Conductors", included some famous names such as Harriet Beecher Stowe author of Uncle Tom's Cabin; Quaker leader Thomas Garrett; and Harriet Tubman, who has escaped from slavery in 1849, and spent the next few years leading more than 300 blacks to freedom.

Of course, not all the slaves escaped. Some were captured despite the secrecy of the Underground Railroad and those captured were taken back to their masters, for flogging and sometimes death.

But a Surprising number did reach the north, some estimates ranging as high as 100,000 men, women and children during the from 1780 and 1865, In addition to the people it rescued from slavery, the underground railroad forced many otherwise uninvolved Northerners to face up to problem of slavery and the plight of the blacks.

It also helped to convince the South that the North would never leave the issue of slavery alone. Both of these factors played a part that started the Bloody and Tragic American Civil War that began in 1861.

(The National Network)

Following upon legislation passed in 1990 for the National Park Service to perform a special resource study of the Underground Railroad, in 1997, the 105th Congress introduced and subsequently passed H.R. 1635 – National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Act of 1998, which President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1998.

This act authorized the United States National Park Service to establish the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom program to identify associated sites, as well as preserve them and popularize the Underground Railroad and stories of people involved in it. The National Park Service has designated many sites within the network, posted stories about people and places, sponsors an essay contest, and holds a national conference about the Underground Railroad in May or June each year.

The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park, which includes Underground Railroad routes in three counties of Maryland's Eastern Shore and Harriet Tubman's birthplace, was created by President Barack Obama under the Antiquities Act on March 25, 2013. Its sister park, the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park in Auburn, New York, was established on January 10, 2017, and focuses on the later years of Tubman's life as well as her involvement with the Underground Railroad and the abolition movement.
