(What Was the Treaty of Ghent?)

The Treaty Of Ghent, was the peace treaty that ended the War of 1812 between the United States and the United Kingdom. It took effect in February 1815 and Both sides signed it on December 24, 1814, in the city of Ghent, United Netherlands which is now in Belgium. The treaty restored relations between the two parties to a status quo ante bellum by restoring the pre war borders of June 1812.

The treaty began more than two centuries of mostly-peaceful relations between the United States and the United Kingdom despite a few tense moments, such as the Aroostook War in 1838-39, the Trent Affair in 1861, and also the Fenian raids in 1866-1871.

(How The Odd War Ended)

The Peace Treaty That Ended the war of 1812, perhaps the oddest war in American History was in itself strange because it did not even mention the causes of the dispute between England and America at the Time, The document which was signed in the Belgian city of Ghent on Christmas Eve in 1814, Provided only for the restoration of the prewar environment and for the Release of Prisoners from the war.

The Resolution of some Major issues of the war were left to special commissions that were set up specifically for the Purpose.

At First The British had rejected various peace feelers sent out by The U.S State Secretary of State James Monroe, But as England's Foreign secretary Lord Castereagh, watched victories over the French in Napoleonic War counterbalanced by British losses to the United States in the War of 1812, he contracted Monroe and suggested a Peace Conference.

The United States negotiations ---- John Quincy Adams, James A. Bayard, Henry Clay, Jonathan Russell and Albert Gallatin, had Arrived in Belgium in August of 1814, with orders to seek reparations for Impressment of American Seaman into British service as well as for British service as well for British Naval blockades against neutral ships heading to and from the United States.

The British demand territorial concessions along the U.S.- Canada border from Maine to the west lake of Lake Superior, and the Establishment of a neutral Indian buffer zone in the Northwest.

The British position in the negotiations seemed to waver according to the fortunes of war. When The British learned about the Burning of Washington D.C, Their delegates insisted upon retaining all conquered territories then in their possession.

The United States rejected those terms and then soon Captain Thomas MacDonough of the U.S Navy defeated the British Fleet on Lake Champlain, the British agreed to restore all territories taken by either side, An arbitration commission was appointed to settle the disputed border between the United States and Canada.

Later commissions took up the problems of fishing rights and the question of monetary compensation for owners of slaves seized by the British during the war.

The Controversy over impressment, which had been such an emotional issue at the Beginning of the war died out in 1815, with the final defeat of Napoleon in France, for the British no longer had a reason to carry on this practice.
