(What was The Capture Of Jemima Boone?)

The capture and rescue of Jemima Boone along with the Callaway girls is a famous incident in the colonial history of Kentucky, The three girls are kidnapped by a Shawnee raiding party on July 7, 1776, but we're rescued 3 days later by Daniel Boone (Jemima's Father) and his party, The events which surrounded the kidnapping and rescue were then fictionalized into a story by James Fenimore Cooper and a Painting by Charles Ferdinand Wimar in the 19th Century.

(Kidnapped by the Shawnees)

The inhabitants of Boonesborough, a settlement on the Kentucky River originally founded in 1775 as a fort by Daniel Boone had almost begun to take their quiet lives for granted, since the Indians had left them largely in peace.

On July 7th, 1776, a small party of Shawnees captured three white girls, as they were floating in a canoe on the river. One young woman was Boone's daughter Jemima who, with her mother, was among the first white women to reach Kentucky.

Her companions were Elizabeth and Frances Callaway, daughters of Colonel Richard Callaway, a friend of Boone.

When the settlers realized what happened, Boonesborough was thrown into turmoil. Daniel Boone at once organized a search party and set out on pursuit. Meanwhile, the girls were hurried north by their captors toward Shawnee villages beyond the Ohio River.

On the way the girls tried to mark their trail by leaving bits of torn clothing behind, and Elizabeth tried to leave tracks by digging her heels into the ground as she went. In short they did everything they could to make trouble until the Indians finally threatened to kill them if they continued to do so.

Boone, however, knew how to think like an Indian and was able to follow the trail even without further clues. He and his rescue party caught up with the kidnappers three days after the capture of the girls. On that morning, as the Indians were building a fire to cook breakfast, the girls heard a shot ring out.

"That's Daddy's gun!" cried Jemima, as one of the Indains toppled into the fire the other Shawnees ran off leaving the girls behind to Boone and his men. The girls were escorted home to Boonesborough in triumph.

Jemima soon afterward married Flanders Callaway, a member of the rescue party, Elizabeth "Besty" Callaway married Samuel Henderson and Francese "Fanny" Callaway married a young settler named John Holder.

The story of the rescue spread all through the settlements in the Kentucky Neighborhood and greatly enhanced Daniel Boone's reputation as a scout and woodsman. Further, the episode served as a warning to the settlers of the Kentucky wilderness and discouraged them from staying beyond the forts.

Eventually the tale reached the ears of James Fenimore Cooper, who used it as the basis of an episode in his classic novel The Last of the Mohicans (1826).

(The Events that Inspired a Story)

The Kidnapping of Jemima Boone along with Elizabeth and Francas Callaway it has inspired a lot of fictional stories and paintings of the events and brought more fame to Daniel Boone; Jemima's Father; it's unknown much about Jemima's Life after the kidnapping and rescue only that she married Flanders callaway and seemed to have had a normal life after that.

But the events of her kidnapping seemed to have become a legend and story nowadays as such James Fenimore Cooper's Historical Fiction; The Last of Mohicans which as itself comes from his series; Leatherstocking Tales.

The Story is Set against the French and Indian siege of Fort William Henry in 1757 and The Last of the Mohicans recounts the story of two sisters, Cora and Alice Munro, daughters of the English commander of the fort who are struggling to be reunited with their father. Similar in a way to how the events of Jemima's Kidnapping occurred.

The Popularity of this story has become Many films since 1911 up until 1992, with the 1920 film being the most significant as said by the Library of Congress.
